County seeks additional security

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Lawrence County officials are considering beefing up security at county government buildings.

The county salary board will meet Tuesday to consider hiring three additional part-time deputy sheriffs to help man the doors at government buildings.

Commissioner Dan Vogler said these deputies would be in addition to the four part-time civilian screeners already working in the government center.

He said none of the current door screeners is licensed to carry a gun.

The screeners are stationed at the government center at all times and occasionally at Lawrence County Central Court. Vogler said they want to add door screeners and deputies at an adjacent building which houses domestic relations and juvenile and adult parole offices.

"I believe we have an obligation to provide a safe environment," he said.

Vogler said the enhanced security would involve having the current screeners work more hours and supplementing their work with armed part-time sheriff's deputies.

The commissioner added that they looked at hiring an outside security firm, but found it would be more expensive.
