Five new patrol officers sworn in
The city has a new $230,000 anti-gang grant.
YOUNGSTOWN Mayor Jay Williams swore in five new officers to what he called the finest police department in Ohio.
The ceremony took place Monday in city council chambers with family and friends looking on.
The new officers are: Ryan Laatsch, 23, of Akron; Shawna-Cie Ott, 26, of New Castle; Shakir Perkins, 26, of Youngstown; George Anderson, 37, of Boardman; and Bridget Quinn, 25, of Struthers.
Police Chief Jimmy Hughes said the new officers will have some in-service training to learn how the department operates before getting their patrol assignments. He said all except Perkins have previous law enforcement experience.
Hughes shook hands with the new officers and posed for photos with them.
What's next
The Youngstown Police Department now has 126 patrol officers. The last hiring took place in December 2006.
Williams, meanwhile, announced that the city has received a $230,000 U.S. Department of Justice anti-gang grant facilitated by U.S. Attorney Greg White in Cleveland. The mayor commended the efforts of the grant writing team, especially Laura Brown, YPD project analyst.
The mayor said the multi-year grant will enable the city to increase Special Interdiction Patrols during the summer. YPD will again join forces with the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol for its zero tolerance approach to crime.
