Lawrence Co. man stricken by West Nile virus

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A 63-year-old Lawrence County man became the eighth confirmed case of West Nile virus in Pennsylvania this year.

State health officials said Tuesday the man was hospitalized and has recovered. They would not release his name or where he lives in the county.

Richard McGarvey of the state health department said there have been two deaths from the virus in Pennsylvania this year. West Nile is spread by infected mosquitoes.

McGarvey said most people who contract the virus have no symptoms, but in the most severe cases, a person can experience fever, swollen glands, muscle aches and pains and even encephalitis.
