Spectator killed, another injured at Mercer Raceway

MERCER, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police said one spectator was killed and another seriously injured when a car ran off the dirt track at Mercer Raceway Park.

Steven W. Guthrie, 25, of Mercer was fatally injured when a race car failed to negotiate turn 3 and slammed into a pit barrier, causing the barrier to strike him around 9:45 p.m. Saturday, police said.

An ambulance crew was at the raceway and took Guthrie to Grove City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:49 p.m.

The Mercer County coroner's office is investigating and an autopsy was scheduled for Sunday but no results were available late Sunday evening. The investigation is being handled as an accidental death, police said.

Samuel Ketcham, 21, of Grove City, also was struck by the barrier. He was in the intensive care unit at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh late Sunday.
