Dredging company owned suspicious box

TOLEDO (AP) — A device left on a railroad bridge over the Maumee River that caused authorities to evacuate a five-block area belonged to a company that dredges the river.

The company said it put the device on the bridge a week ago to monitor the depth of the river.

But authorities didn't know that and shut down traffic on the river and evacuated several homes after someone noticed the device Monday. The bomb squad blew up the device, which had wires and battery.

It will cost $11,000 to replace it, said Bud Cropek, spokesman for Leudtke Engineering of Frankfort, Mich.

"From now on, we're going to put our name, number and stuff on the outside," he said. "We had information on the inside, but no one wanted to open up the box."
