John Anthony Battafarano, 89

CANFIELD – There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Church in Youngstown for John Anthony Battafarano, 89, who passed away Thursday afternoon at Forum Northside Medical Center.

John was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Youngstown the son of Philip and Antoinette Battafarano.

A proud WWII Army veteran, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, serving in France, Belgium and Italy and in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach.

Mr. Battafarano worked as a self-employed bricklayer before retiring in 1977. He was lifelong member of St. Anthony Church and was a member of the Italian American War Veterans.

His wife the former Marie Esther Liguore whom he married April 19, 1947, died Dec. 15, 2006.

He is survived by his two sons, Philip (Renee) Battafarano of Boardman and Jack Battafarano of Canfield; his granddaughter, Danielle Battafarano of Poland; and his sister, Phyllis Battafarano, and a brother, James Battafarano, both of Liberty.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Sam, Albert, Joseph and Nicholas Battafarano.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the church.

Agnes Booty, 90

AUSTINTOWN – Agnes Booty, 90, passed away Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

She was born Jan. 5, 1917 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Dominic Mordocco and Angelia (Alia) Mordocco.

She was the wife of the late William “Bill” Booty, whom she married May 11, 1959.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

She attended Woodrow Wilson High School and was employed as a seamstress for G.F. & O’Neal Awning and Ohio Chair. She enjoyed crafts, cards and crocheting and was an avid bowler.

Family includes a sister, Helen (John) Trimboli of Austintown, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph (Minnie) Mordocco; a sister, Serena (Michael) Chindamo; and a nephew, Mickey Mordocco.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Monday at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 East Indianola Ave. in Youngstown.

Her services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

William H. Davis, 85

HERMITAGE, PA. – William H. Davis, 85, of 32 Stoneridge Blvd., passed away at 8:50 a.m. Thursday at the Shenango Presbyterian Home Senior Care in New Wilmington, Pa., after an extended illness.

He was born April 29, 1921 in Youngstown to the late Edward H. and Faith M. (Richards) Davis.

A 1939 graduate of The Rayen School, Mr. Davis was a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College with a B.S. degree in accounting and was also a graduate of Northwestern University with a B.S. degree in arts. In 1953, he earned his CPA accreditation.

He was a member of the Ohio CPA Society, a volunteer for the United Way of Mercer County and a former member of the Sharon Country Club. He was an avid golfer. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1943 through 1946. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon for more than 50 years, where he had been a deacon and started the first auditing committee of the church.

He retired in 1986 from ARMCO Steel in Sharon, where he had worked for 33 years as an assistant controller. He had also worked at Sawhill (Cyclops Division), also in Sharon.

He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn L. Schultz, whom he married March 2, 1946; along with his daughter, Pamela B. Schwartz, and his granddaughter, Marilyn “Marnie” Schwartz, both of Warren; his brother, Harry R. and his wife Mary Jo of Hemmingford, Neb.; and a nephew.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 East State St. in Sharon, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Pamela Mahoney, Associate Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boardman.

Judith Ann DeRose, 68

AUSTINTOWN – There will be services at noon on Monday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Judith Ann DeRose, 68, who passed away Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Judith was born Dec. 20, 1938 in Youngstown, a daughter of Jacob F. Kahrer and Margaret Stiegler.

Judith was a 1956 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School. She worked for General Motors, Lordstown for 32 years, retiring from the paint department in 2006. She enjoyed going swimming at Craig Beach during the summer. Her greatest love was her children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.

Her husband, James DeRose, whom she married July 10, 1956, passed away July 19, 1971.

She leaves her mother, Margaret Stiegler of New Castle, Pa.; two daughters, Cheryll Allen of Youngstown and Cindy Thornley of Charlestown, S.C.; two sons, Alfred DeRose and Jimmy DeRose, both of Youngstown; four brothers, Ronald Kahrer of Daytona Beach, Fla., Roy William Kahrer of Indianapolis, Robert Stiegler of Fredricksburg, Va., and Gregory Stiegler of New Middletown; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father.

Anthony Flasck Jr., 54

BOARDMAN – Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Wasko Funeral Home for Anthony Flasck Jr., 54, who passed away Wednesday morning at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Flasck was born July 11, 1952 in Youngstown, a son of Anthony Sr. and Frances Callipare Flasck.

Prior to his illness, he provided custodial services for Goodwill Industries of Youngstown. He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife, the former, Margaret M. Zecher, whom he married Jan. 15, 1974; two sons, Anthony Flasck III and Brandon Flasck, both at home; four daughters, Sherry Flasck of Florida, Tabitha Flasck of Struthers, Brenda Hellman of Youngstown and Tonya Flasck of Florida; three sisters, Cora Ford of Campbell, Connie Detec of Campbell and Connie Martin of Florida; and seven grandchildren.

His parents preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.


Albert J. Habegger, 80

NORTH JACKSON- Albert J. Habegger, 80, passed away at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Albert was born July 30, 1926 in Austintown, the son of the late Christian and Martha (Kneubehl) Habegger.

Albert retired after 34 years with U.S. Steel in McDonald, where he worked as a tow motor operator.

Albert was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Japan during WWII. Albert received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal Japan, Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Albert was discharged as Private First Class from the United States Army on Nov. 11, 1946.

Albert was a member of the Four Mile Run Christian Church in Austintown and enjoyed woodworking.

Albert is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Sally Jane Thomas, whom he married on Feb. 19, 1949; three sons, George (Cheryl) of Girard, John at home and David A. (Kimberly) of Youngstown; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Albert was preceded in death by a brother, Christian Habegger.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at Four Mile Run Christian Church, 701 Four Mile Run Road, Austintown, OH 44515.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the church.

A caring cremation has taken place under the direction of the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

Henrietta Levington, 103

BEACHWOOD – Henrietta Levington, 103, passed away.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Hannah and Nathan and dear sister of the late Philip, Beatrice and Lawrence.

Henrietta has no living survivors.

She was dear friend of Audrey Katzman and Rita Shtull.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be at noon on Monday at El Emeth Cemetery on Granada Avenue in Youngstown.

Ruth M. Llewellyn, 88

BOARDMAN – Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church for Ruth M. Llewellyn, 88, who passed away Thursday morning at the Greenbriar Health Care Center.

Ms. Llewellyn was born May 16, 1918 in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Anna Parkin Llewellyn.

She was a teletype operator with Youngstown Sheet and Tube.

She was an active member of the church and enjoyed volunteer work with the Protestant Family Services and at Beeghly Oaks. She also was a member of various bridge clubs.

Surviving her are a niece and two nephews whom she raised after the death of their parents, JoAnn (Jerry) Houck of Poland, Bill Wert of Islamorada, Fla., and Guy (Laura) Wert of Boardman; and two grand-nieces, Cory and Casey Wert.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Wert.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Mary Jane Mayle, 69

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be services Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Austintown Chapel and at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Church for Mary Jane Mayle, 69, who passed away Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

She was born Jan. 28, 1937 in Youngstown, a daughter of Dominic Molinaro and Lucille Calabria.

She was a 1955 graduate of Boardman High School. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church and their Dust Busters and Women’s Renewal.

Her husband, Millard Mayle, whom she married April 15, 1957, passed away July 30, 1998.

She leaves a daughter, Martha Kennedy of Austintown; two sons, Dana (Tracy) Mayle of Canfield and Todd (Michele) Mayle of Austintown; two stepsons, Richard York of New Middletown and David York of Lowellville; four sisters, Shirley Staler of Austintown, Jeanette Pizzuto of Austintown, Patricia Alexander of Youngstown and Joan (Ronald) Deak of Austintown; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband; and an infant daughter, Michelle Mayle.

Malvern C. “Slim” Moody, 86

HUBBARD – Malvern C. “Slim” Moody, 86, passed away Thursday morning at Liberty Health Care Center from complications of emphysema.

He was born Aug. 30, 1920 in DuBois, Pa., a son of the late Charles and Leona (Boyer) Moody.

Malvern was a construction supervisor for the National Development Co. for many years, served in the Merchant Marines during WWII, was a Navy recruiter for 12 years in Youngstown, and served 12 years in the Navy Reserves. He was a member of the Austintown Community Church, a private pilot owning his own plane, a cabinet maker, and enjoyed making miniature doll houses. He was also a member of the Western Star Blue Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, the former Betty Brown, whom he married March 17, 1945; two children, Joyce and her husband Jim Catterson of Canfield and Gary and his fiancée, Stacy Johnston of Danville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Marnie (Ed) McMurray and their daughter, Gillian and Robin (Terry) Vickers and their daughter, Samantha.

Besides his parents, Malvern was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Helsel.

Josephine “Josie” A. Novak, 66

BOARDMAN – Services will be today at 11:30 a.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Boardman and at noon at St. Matthias Church for Josephine A. Novak, 66, who died Wednesday at her residence.

Josephine, known as “Josie,” was born May 11, 1940 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Stella Baron Badowski.

She graduated from Wilson High School and worked in the bakery for Woolworth’s in downtown Youngstown and had also worked in the cafeteria at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

She enjoyed crocheting, baking and hosting birthday parties for her neighbors and friends, doing puzzles and coloring with her grandchildren and listening to her grandchildren’s stories. She was a very giving person and would do anything to help someone.

Her husband, Stephen “Rich” Novak, whom she married April 4, 1959 died Nov. 30, 1993.

She leaves her daughter, Jean (Michael) Shives of Boardman; two grandchildren, Christopher and Michelle Shives; her sister, Lucille Kish of Boardman; two aunts, Mary Soroka of Youngstown and Anna Morris of Xenia; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Stephen J. Novak.

Calling hours were Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Absalom Charles Parry Sr., 87

WARSAW, IND. – Absalom Charles Parry Sr., 87, of 2660 S. 275, died at 1:25 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Miller’s Merry Manor.

He was born Nov. 1, 1919 in Youngstown, a son of Absalom Parry and Katherine Louise (Featsent) Parry. He had resided in Kosciusko County since 1968

His wife, Ruth Alice (Johnston) Parry, whom he married June 12, 1944 and who was from Brownlee Woods, died Aug. 20, 2002.

He was a tool & dye maker. He was a member of Winona Lake Free Methodist Church, Winona Lake, Indiana. He attended Ashland Seminary and Youngstown College in Ohio and graduated from Fitch High School in 1938.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. John (Gail) Stiverson of Greenfield, Ind.; three sons, David R. and wife Susan Parry of Greenfield, Absalom and wife Sharon Parry of Warsaw and Daniel E. and wife Jill Parry of Osaka, Japan; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by both parents; a grandchild; a sister; and a brother.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, and from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Titus Funeral Home in Warsaw.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw with Pastor David Parry.

Robert H. Pierson, 83

SALEM – Robert H. Pierson, 83, passed away at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at Essex 1 following a brief illness.

Mr. Pierson was born Aug. 6, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of Harry H. and Ruth E. Ericson Pierson.

Robert had been a lifelong area resident. He retired from Buckeye-Industrial Coal Co. of Lisbon, where he had worked for 38 years as past secretary and treasurer. He was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Pierson served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European and Pacific Theatre. He was a graduate of the Allegheny College in 1947 and a South High School in Youngstown graduate in 1941.

Robert was a member of the V.F.W. of Lisbon, a former member of the Salem Golf Club and a member of various bridge clubs.

Mr. Pierson was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia D. Pierson, on Jan. 22, 1989. They were married April 16, 1946. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Norma I. Davidson, in 2006, they were married in 1991.

He is survived by a son Jon P. Pierson, and his wife, Vicki of Grove City, Pa.; three grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Ray R. Pierson, and a brother, John P. Pierson.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Carolyn Griffeth officiating.

Burial will be in Lake Park Cemetery.

Alfred Scofinsky Sr., 82

LOWELLVILLE - Alfred Scofinsky, 82, passed away Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 9, 1924 in a farmhouse in Edinburgh, Pa. Al was the son of John and Mary Scofinsky.

Mr. Scofinsky is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Martha S. Scofinsky of Lowellville; two brothers, Joseph (Betty) Scofinsky of Hubbard and Steven Scofinsky of Columbus; two daughters, Joyce (Martin) Kollar of Pulaski, Pa., and Jo Ann (Russ) Konkowski of Aurora; three sons, Alfred (Angela) Scofinsky Jr., of Bessemer, Pa., Richard (Laurie) Scofinsky of Youngstown and William (Bridget) Scofinsky of Austintown; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Scofinsky was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John Scofinsky, Andy Scofinsky and George Scofinsky; three sisters, Leona Scofinsky, Mary Tyminski and Irene Carville; a son, Gary W. Scofinsky, Sr.; and two grandchildren.

Al and Martha met and fell in love while he was serving his country during WWII in the United States Air Force. Together they worked to build a family on a strong foundation of love and hard work. Al worked for over 32 years at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a welder. His superior record of service included a period of 63 consecutive 12-hour shifts without a day off. After he retired, he and Martha were inseparable.

A dedicated sports fan, Al followed the Cleveland Indians with passion and was an avid thoroughbred racing fan. He enjoyed cooking meals for his family, working in his yard, his garden, and fixing whatever he could get his hands on.

Al’s legacy will be his passionate love for his wife and their families. Al will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. His love and concern for others will live on through his family.

The family will welcome friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Lowellville, where prayer services will be held Monday morning at 9:45 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the prayer service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers at 10:30 a.m.
