Shirley Fay Callier, 54

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Shirley Fay Callier, 54, who departed this life Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

She was born Feb. 2, 1952 in Brent, Ala., a daughter of James and Fannie M. Huff Callier.

Ms. Callier was an assembler at General Motors and was the author of children’s books and poems. She was graduate of Youngstown Business School and the Pittsburgh Art Institute.

She leaves a son, Tariton Callier Sr.; her mother; three sisters, Cynthia Callier and Tyra Whatley, both of Youngstown, and Velma Wilson of Atmore, Ala.; a brother, James Callier of Youngstown; and three grandchildren, Dominique Callier, Terika Callier and Braylon Ford, all of Youngstown.

She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson, Tariton Callier Jr.

Jon M. Caras, 48

FORT WAYNE, IND. – Jon M. Caras, 48, died Wednesday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Born in Youngstown, he was employed as an assembler with General Motors Corporation for 23 years.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the UAW, and the Harley Owners Group. He enjoyed motorcycles and car racing.

Survivors include his daughters, Jennifer M. Caras and Jessica R. Caras; his mother, Eileen D. (Kollar) Caras of Canfield; his sisters, Laurie L. Martuscello of Palm Beach, Fla., and Nancy Cashon of Nashville, Tenn.; and his brothers, Thomas J. Caras of Canfield and James M. Caras of Plano, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle E., in 2005.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Christine Catholic Church with Msgr. David Rhodes officiating.

Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Chester T. “Chet” Dubiel, 75

YOUNGSTOWN - There will be services Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel and at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Chester T. “Chet” Dubiel, 75, who passed away early Thursday morning at Hospice House.

Chet was born May 16, 1931 in Youngstown, the son of Thaddeus and Anna Kucharski Dubial.

He was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he had earned All City Honors in football, earning him a scholarship to Purdue University.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War, circumnavigating the world.

He later worked at Pepsi Cola of Youngstown for more than 42 years. He retired as its fountain and vending supervisor in 1992.

Chet had been inducted into the Wilson High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in football.

He was a member of St. Christine Church and its golf league, Eagles No. 3298 in Austintown, where he was past president, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, the Youngstown Baseball Old-Timers, and had co-chaired the Wilson High School all sports golf outing for many years.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth M. Matisik, whom he married July 5, 1952; two daughters, Sheri (Scott) Summers and Monica (Jack) Durkin, both of Boardman; two sons, Dave (Hanna) Dubiel of Columbus and John (Joan) Dubiel of Boardman; 10 grandchildren, Stacy, Scott, David, Patrick, Erick, Leslie, Natalie, John, Renee and Kevin; and a sister, Delores (Ed) Luth of Mineral Ridge.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Dubial.

Morris Fine, 99

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Children of Israel Cemetery on Granada Avenue for Morris Fine, 99, who passed away Wednesday evening at Heritage Manor.

Mr. Fine was born Feb. 22, 1907 in Boston to Max and Bertha Fine.

“Mose” lived in Smokey Hollow, attended South High School and graduated from The Rayen School.

He played both baseball and tennis in high school and later pitched for teams in the AA Baseball League. He was inducted into the Greater Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was married for 70 years to Lola Rothstein Fine, who resides at Heritage Manor. After Mo left work at the post office in Youngstown, he moved to Akron and sold vacuum cleaners and later aluminum siding and home improvements. They lived in Akron until last year.

Besides Lola, he leaves his daughter, Marlene Michael of San Francisco; his granddaughter, Monica Guida of New Jersey; and two great-grandchildren, Louis and Alyson. He also leaves his brother, Sam of Youngstown; his nephews and nieces, Richard Fine of Youngstown, Kaila Gluck of Florida, Alan Fine of San Francisco and Karen Rubin of Youngstown, whose efforts on his behalf led to an extension of quality of life for him; and his sister-in-law, Lillian Finegold Beck of Warren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Harry, Hyman, Dave and Ben; and his daughter, Bonita.

Flavia L. Foltz, 97

EAST PALESTINE – Flavia L. Foltz, 97, of 48422 Heck Road, died at 2:05 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana.

She was born Sept. 6, 1909 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of William and Hilda O’Hara Legat, and had lived here since 1978, coming from Youngstown.

Mrs. Foltz had been employed as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell for 30 years, retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge of Youngstown, where she was pianist for more than 42 years, the Dames of Malta of Youngstown, AARP and Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Frank E. Foltz, whom she married April 30, 1930 died May 7, 1963.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Beverly) Lehn of Holly Springs, N.C., and Mrs. Thomas (Jacqueline) Wray of East Palestine; a son, Walter W. Foltz of Orange Beach, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Two sisters, Geraldine Cessna and Genevieve Daff, and a brother, Charles Foltz, are also deceased.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Monday, Jan. 22, at the Van Dyke-Swaney Funeral Home in East Palestine, with the Rev. Mary Murtha officiating.

Burial will be at Belmont Park Cemetery, Youngstown.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Monday.

Luceia “Lucy” Fry, 78

SALEM – Luceia “Lucy” Fry, 78, of Alterra Sterling House, passed away at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at the Greenbriar Healthcare Center in Boardman.

Lucy was born Nov. 1, 1928 in Butler, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Mary E. Hornick Damico.

Mrs. Fry moved from Butler, Pa. to Columbiana in 1967. Lucy was a waitress in Butler for five years. She was a member of the St. Jude Catholic Church in Columbiana, where she served in many various activities of the church.

Lucy was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 30, 1994, Clair G. Fry. They were married Nov. 8, 1948.

Mrs. Fry is survived by three daughters, Linda Fry of Amsterdam, N.Y., Cynthia Haskins and her husband James of Mooresville, N.C., and Shari L. Fry of Columbiana; a son, Charles H. Fry of Dresden; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rusnak of Cabot, Pa., and Mrs. Marshall (Gloria) Smith of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Lucy was also preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Plutchak and Margaret Padovese, and two brothers, Victor Damico and Robert Damico.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 27, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Columbiana with Rev. Thomas Ziegler officiating.

Burial will be at Columbiana Cemetery.

Cora Lee Hudson, 73

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church for Mrs. Cora Lee Hudson, 73, who departed this life Monday, Jan. 15, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mrs. Hudson was born July 4, 1933 in Tunica, Miss., a daughter of Ike and Bertha Reed McKinney.

She was a 1951 graduate of East High School and worked for 41 years as a baker at Kravitz Delicatessen, Inc. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and its Senior Usher and Mission Ministries and a former member of the Order of Eastern Stars. She loved to cook, enjoyed game shows and bingo.

Her husband, Nathan, whom she married Feb. 8, 1969, passed away July 16, 1992.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory three children, Mary Glover, Linda (Lorenzo) Johnson and Richard Hill, all of Youngstown; stepchildren, Barbara Buchanan, Estella Hudson, Donna (Frankie) Brown, Diane Poindexter, Nathan Jr., Eddie, Jessie Lee, Rev. Charles, Thomas and Rocky Hudson and Stanley Poindexter, all of Youngstown, Dr. Francis Bliss of Huntsville, Ala., and Donald (Carol) Hudson of Atlanta; two sisters, Nettie Buckley and Lucille McKinney both of Youngstown; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, including three she reared, Monique Talley, Richard Phillips and Nikkia Hudson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Terry Hudson, and three brothers, Moses, Camble and Ike McKinney.

Frieda Martz, 91

BOARDMAN - There will be services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old North Church for Frieda Martz, 91, who passed away Wednesday at her home.

Frieda was born Dec. 16, 1915 in Germany, a daughter of William and Frieda Rausch Roth.

Frieda was a 1934 graduate of Chaney High School and was valedictorian of her class. She lettered all four years in all around sports and was president of the National Honors Society.

She worked at YSU as an office manager/executive secretary for the Dean of Arts and Sciences for more than 20 years, retiring in 1986.

She was secretary of her high school reunion committee and a member of the Eastern Star and was a Cub Scout Leader.

She was active for many years in YO-MAH-O Secretary Organization, YSU Retirees and at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in the Marion Circle. She was also a member of Su Jetts Bridge Club, which was formed while they where in junior high and stayed together for more than 50 years. She attended the Old North Church.

Her husband, Roy S. Martz Jr., to whom she was happily married, passed away in 1962.

Frieda leaves her children, Audrey Henshaw of Youngstown, Roy (Blanca) Martz III of Austin, Texas, Jeanne (Michael) Cummings of Canfield and Nancy Dillon of Boardman; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Frieda was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, William Roth Jr.

Daniel Claude Russell Sr., 66

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Daniel Claude Russell Sr., 66, who departed this life Wednesday at his residence.

Mr. Russell was born Sept. 3, 1940 in Fitz-Henry, Pa., the son of Claude and Pearl Rolling Russell.

He was a steelworker and of the Pentecostal faith.

His wife, the former Jacqueline Burnette, whom he married Oct. 16, 1968, died in 1976.

He leaves two sons, Daniel C. (Tina) Russell Jr. of Youngstown and Donald E. (Tonya) Russell of Pittsburgh; three daughters, Joy Russell Johnson of Pittsburgh, Panolar A. (Gustovos) Russell-Winlock of Youngstown and Tanis R. (Belford) Russell Quillens of New Orleans, La.; three brothers, Ray Russell and Roosevelt (Barbara) Russell, both of Pittsburgh and Claude Russell of Toledo; two sisters, Ann Noble of Pittsburgh and Dorothy Graham of Toledo; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Panolar Wilson Russell; a son, David G, Russell; and two brothers, James and John Russell.

Ronald J. Russo, 59

NEW CASTLE, PA. – Ronald J. Russo, 59, of 258 Cunningham Lane, passed away the evening of Jan. 17 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born Oct. 20, 1947 in New Castle, the son of Ralph A. and Marietta Strizzi Russo of New Castle.

Mr. Russo graduated from Neshannock High School and ATES Technical School. He was the owner of D’Vron Ceramic Studio.

He was a member of St. Camillus Church, enjoyed hunting, golfing and fishing and was a reservist in the National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mary Beth Andrews Russo, whom he married Oct. 7, 1972; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Craig A. (Amy) Russo of New Castle, R. Scott (Roseann) Russo of Erie, Pa., and Bryan Russo of Erie; a sister, Judith Russo Doutt of Norton; and a granddaughter, Francesca Rose Russo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road in New Castle.

There will be a procession from the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Camillus Church, 314 W. Englewood Ave. in New Castle, with the Father Philip Farrell officiating.

Burial will be at Castle View Memorial Gardens.

Shawn L. Woodall, 28

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a funeral service at noon on today at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Shawn L. Woodall, 28, who departed this life Friday, Jan. 12.

He was born Aug. 4, 1978 in Youngstown, a son of Willie J. Woodall and Tawana F. Flint.

Mr. Woodall was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

He leaves his parents and his stepfather, Phillip McLaurin, two children, Shawn L. Woodall and Shawndaya L. Brown, stepbrothers, Adrien J. Woodall and Terry Woodall, and a stepsister, Rhonda Woodall, all of Youngstown.

His brother, Sherman Woodall; a sister, Lawana Woodall; and his grandparents, John and Cynthia L. Flint, preceded him in death.

Patricia A. Zirafi, 73

GIRARD – Patricia A. Zirafi, 73, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Patricia was born Nov. 12, 1933 in Struthers, a daughter of Merle and Matilda Fulton Ault.

She was a homemaker and drove the Girard Senior Citizens van for nine years. She was a member of St. Rose Church, a former member of the Girard Junior Women’s Club and enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Anthony Zirafi, whom she married May 22, 1954; her children, Debbie (Ken) Johnson of Girard, Cindy (Tim) Breese of Girard, Nan Zirafi of Los Angeles, Susan Zirafi of New York City, Tony Zirafi of Girard, Amy (Bob) Roth of Boardman and Becky (Jay) DasVarma of Akron; four grandchildren, Tim and Molly Breese and Kelly and Krista Johnson; and a brother, Edward Ault of Struthers.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Alan Ault, and a grandson, Cory Breese.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Rose Church in Girard, preceded by a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Girard City Cemetery.
