Sister Eileen Basel, H.M., 76
VILLA MARIA, PA. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Villa Maria Chapel in Villa Maria, for Sister Eileen Basel, H.M., 79, who died Thursday, Jan. 18, at Villa Maria Community Center.
She was born in Cleveland, the daughter of George and Marie (McMahon) Basel. She entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary on Jan. 15, 1949.
Sister Eileens ministry in education included assignments at St. Patrick on Hubbard, St. Brendan, St. Edward, and Youngstown State University in Youngstown. In addition, she served at the Villa Maria Community Center.
Sister Eileen is survived by her sisters in the Humility of Mary Congregation, and sisters, Alice Biltz of Garfield Heights and Geraldine Bishop of Chosaning, Mich.
Calling hours will be Monday, Jan. 22, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Villa Maria Chapel. A Wake service is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 22, at 7:15 p.m.

FT. WAYNE, IND. Glenda W. Casey, 91, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Jan. 17 at The Waters of Summit City in Ft. Wayne.
She was born Aug. 8, 1915 in Rockford.
She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
She leaves her husband of 66 years, William L.; a daughter, Nancy A. (John) Snyder of Ft. Wayne; her grandchildren, Cindy (Dan) Nahrwald and John T. (Hope) Snyder, both of Ft. Wayne, W.T. (Marinel) Casey of Dallas and Sean and Brian Casey of Shady Side, Md.; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, W. Thomas Casey; a sister; and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Road in Ft. Wayne, where there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at Highland Park Cemetery.

Lillie Elsie Goering Cullar, 91
NORTH LIMA Lillie Elsie Goering Cullar, 91, of 2120 Lynn Road, passed away at 7:33 p.m. Wednesday at the Hospice House in North Lima from cancer.
Lillie was born Nov. 26, 1915 in McPherson County, Kan., the daughter of John C. and Adina Wedel Goering.
She and her husband, John, owned and operated the Paradise Greenhouse and Vegetable Farm, retiring in 1993.
She was a member of the Midway Mennonite Church where she shared deacon responsibilities with her husband and served as past Sunday School teacher. She attended McPherson College. After teaching several years in one room school houses, she served in the Mennonite Voluntary Service. She enjoyed baking and traveling.
She is survived by her husband, John Allen Cullar, whom she married Nov. 23, 1951; a sister, Lorene Stucky of Moundridge, Kan.; a brother, Martin H. Goering of Moundridge; many nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Craig Cullar in 1956; two sisters, Bertha A. Kaufman and Ellen Schrag; and five brothers, Phil J. Goering, Edwin J. Goering, Ben J. Goering, John W. Goering and Arthur J. Goering.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Midway Mennonite Church in Columbiana with the Rev. Larry Rohrer officiating.
Burial will be at Midway Cemetery.

Leander G. Sharkey Flint, 59
FARRELL, PA. Leander G. Sharkey Flint, 59, of 306 Federal St., passed away Wednesday morning at his home.
A lifelong Shenango Valley resident, he was born Oct. 13, 1947 in Sharon, Pa., to Paul G. and Catherine Callahan Flint.
Mr. Flint was a 1966 graduate of Farrell High School, where he excelled in football, track and basketball. He was employed by the former Sharon Steel Corp.s Farrell plant and the Mercer County Housing Authority in Sharon.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Murray-Bell Post No. 7597, both in Farrell.
Surviving are his mother, Catherine Flint of Farrell; his father, Paul G. Flint and stepmother Marvel Flint of Hermitage, Pa.; his daughter, Samone Danage and husband Avery of Warren; a sister, Alexis Flint of New Haven, Conn.; three brothers, Elmer Flint and wife Lenora of Monrovia, Calif., Judson Flint and wife Dianne of Farrell and Janel Flint Sr. and wife Laura of Conway, S.C.; an uncle, Judson Flint and wife Joan of Hermitage; two aunts, Shirley A. Flint and husband Paul R. of Columbus and Altha M. Jennings of Sharon; two great-aunts, Corrine Lindsey of Statesville, N.C., and Lucretia Norman of Farrell; his grandchildren, Avery, Ambyr and Arielle Danage, all of Warren; and nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by maternal and paternal grandparents.
Calling hours with the family will be from 11 to 11:50 a.m. Monday at the Community Baptist Church, 1013 Emerson Ave. in Farrell, and in the home of the deceaseds father, Paul G. Flint, at 850 Knapp Ave. in Hermitage.
There will be a funeral service at noon on Monday at the church with the Rev. Robert E. Chavers, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Hermitage, with military honors by VFW Murray-Bell Post No. 7597 of Farrell.

Blanche E. Gbur, 83
YOUNGSTOWN There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., for Blanche E. Gbur, 83, who passed away Thursday at Beeghly Oaks where she resided the past two months. Blanche will always be lovingly remembered by her many family and friends.
She was born April 18, 1923 in Orleans, Neb., a daughter to Herman and Emma Petersen.
Music was appreciated very much in her family as each member played a musical instrument, sang harmony together around the family piano, and enjoyed entertaining at many church and neighborhood social events.
After graduating from Huntley High School, she moved to Los Angeles after accepting a position to work for the county judge. She was later employed by the E.F. Hutton Company (stock exchange).
She met her husband, Barney, while he was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. They fell in love and were married three months later. After the arrival of their first daughter, Sandra, they relocated to Barneys home town of Lowellville, where they later welcomed three more daughters to their family; Linda, Donna and Carol.
Blanche enjoyed being a homemaker, wife and mother very much during her life, always making time to talk and help others. So many people in her life relied on her good advice and understanding, so she enjoyed the friendship and love of young and old alike in her life. She never seemed to age no matter how many physical challenges she experienced.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed the friendship of many beautiful friends.
Her husband, Barney, whom she married June 17, 1944, died May 16, 1986.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Sundquist; a son-in-law, John A Shaffer; and two grandchildren, P.J. and Justin Swaney.
She leaves behind two brothers, Darrel Petersen of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Donald Petersen of Holdrege, Neb.; three sisters, Irene Davidson and Lucile Erickson, both of Denver, and LaDonna Weissman of Holdrege; her four daughters, Sandra Shaffer of Warren, Linda (Jeff) Kulow of Struthers, Donna Gbur of Youngstown and Carol (Dave) Neuberger of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Jacqueline Shaffer of Columbus, Cynthia, John and Timothy Shaffer, all of Warren, Richard (Rachel) ODonnell of Wilmington, N.C., Robert (Lisa) ODonnell of New Middletown and David Neuberger of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren, Ava, Jack and Carter ODonnell of Wilmington, and Brooke and Jake ODonnell of New Middletown.

Danica Kalinic, 85
McDONALD Danica Kalinic, 85, died Friday at her residence.
Danica was born May 1, 1921 in Tusilovic, Yugoslavia, a daughter of the late Rade and Stanka Macut Ljepovic, coming from Yugoslavia in 2001.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Austintown.
She is survived by her daughter, Desa (Marko) Tomich, with whom she made her home; two grandchildren, Dan Tomich and Danica (Vladimir) Novakovic; a great-grandson, Mihailo Novakovic; her sisters, Desa Ljepovic of Serbia and Dusanka Macut of Croatia; and a brother, Dragan Ljepovic of Serbia.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Mile Kukic; their two children, Uros and Dragica; her second husband, Milic Kalinic, whom she married in 1945 and died May 6, 1980; three sisters; and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, where there will be 2 p.m. funeral services.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley or the church Memorial Fund.

H. Jeffrey Kelso, 61
LOWELLVILLE - There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at Victory Christian Center in Coitsville for H. Jeffrey Kelso, 61, who passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon.
Jeff was born Oct. 4, 1945 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Howard E. and Elizabeth (Robinson) Kelso.
He was the owner of Kelso Co., a furniture finishing company, for 30 years and was also the Director of Laboratory Services at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital.
Jeff was a member of Wick Lodge No. 481, G.W.R.R.A., Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, the Lowellville Business Association and was a Youngstown State University graduate. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam War.
He will always be remembered by his wife, Suzanne Balogh, whom he married Nov. 29, 1994; two sons, Christopher I. Kelso of Lowellville and Kenneth P. (Nichole) Day of Struthers; and two sisters, Laurie Rayburn of Charleston, S.C., and Beth Ann (Joseph) Mielcarek of Burlington Conn.

YOUNGSTOWN - Mary J. Kutsko, 89, formerly of Cranbrook Circle, passed away late Thursday evening at Maplecrest Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mary was born Nov. 3, 1917 in Mt. Pleasant, Pa., a daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Gonda Vikartosky, and came to this area as a child.
Mrs. Kutsko was a homemaker and a member of St. Christine Church.
She leaves two daughters, Virginia (John) Lynch of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Paula (John) Mansky of Youngstown; a son, Daniel (Rebecca) Kutsko of Houston; and seven grandchildren.
Her husband, Joseph T. Kutsko Jr., whom she married Jan. 17, 1942, died Jan. 8, 1996. Two brothers, Andrew and Frank Vickers; and a sister, Catherine Yakubovic, are also deceased.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home, Boardman Chapel, 5925 Market St., and at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Stanislaus Church for Alex Lucicosky, 93, who died Wednesday at Greenbriar Healthcare Center.
He was born June 20, 1913 in Campbell, a son of Andrew and Bertha Pryscz Lucicosky.
Mr. Lucicosky enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He was a member of the church. He was employed as a millwright at Youngstown Sheet & Tube for 43 years, retiring in 1975.
His wife, the former Pauline Jendercyk, whom he married Sept. 16, 1936, died May 10, 2003.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald of Boardman and Richard of New Middletown; a daughter, Donna Rodriquez of Youngstown; a sister, Jane Baron of Struthers; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He also raised three grandchildren, Allen Porter of Poland, Dena Metz of Canton and Rhonda Allgower of New Middletown.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Kott and two brothers, Joseph and Henry Lucicosky.

Mary Mackos
YOUNGSTOWN After suffering with cancer for the last few years the angels came for Mary Mackos on Thursday evening with her family at her bedside and took her to her Lord and Savior to a place where there will be no suffering.
Mary was born on June 3, 1926 in Struthers, a daughter of the late Peter and Helen Zornjak.
She was a homemaker and an avid mall walker, a member of St. Matthias Church and a former member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, where she belonged to the Holy Rosary Society. She also belonged to the Neighborhood Block Watch SID and was a 50-year member of SNPJ Lodge 153 of Youngstown.
The family will remember her as a dedicated, caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph L. Mackos, whom she married May 17, 1947; two sons, Joe (Dee) Mackos of Youngstown and Don (Sherene) Mackos of Cincinnati; a daughter, Judy (Sam) Pizzoferrato of Las Vegas; five grandchildren, Ryan, Lara, Marisa Pam and Tina; a brother, Steve Zornjak of Youngstown.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, George Bezjak, John Bezjak, Lou Bezjak and Frank Zornak; and three sisters, Anna Osikiewicz, Barbara Drosdzal and Sara Zubrinich.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Kubina Yuhasz Funeral Home, Boardman Chapel, 5925 Market St. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Matthias Church.

YOUNGSTOWN There will be services at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Beatrice Clarissa Moore, who passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16.
She was born March 16, 1939 in Youngstown, a daughter of Clarence and Aretta E. Young Barnes.
She was a homemaker and loved caring for her family.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, of 50 years Edward Moore, whom she married June 27, 1956; two daughters, Brenda Moore and Tawana Walton and a son, Darren Moore, all of Youngstown; three sisters, Ruth Davis Brown and Irma Williams, both of Youngstown and Cheryl Turner of Columbus; a brother, Richard Barnes of Sacramento; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Edward Moore Jr.; a grandson; a great-grandson; and a sister, Aretta Douglas.

Mary A. Ohlin, 92
NEW MIDDLETOWN Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Mary A. Ohlin, 92, who died Thursday morning at Ron Joy Nursing Home.
Mary was born March 4, 1914 in Windber, Pa., the daughter of Frank and Katherine Kislo. She lived in Johnstown, Pa. until 1924 before moving to Struthers.
She was a member of the church and was one of the original members. She had also been a past president of the Altar Guild and had been one of the piroghy workers.
Her husband, Vincent Wint Ohlin, whom she married May 16, 1936, died Sept. 23, 1990.
She leaves her son, Jack and his wife, Susan Ohlin, as well as her two grandsons, Matt and Sean Ohlin, all of New Middletown.
Besides her husband, a sister, Katherine Kurys and a brother, John are deceased.

BOARDMAN Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Rossi Bros. Funeral Home, Boardman and 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Church, Youngstown, for Samuel A. Orlando, 73, who passed away Thursday evening with his family by his side from a brief battle with cancer.
Sam was born Feb. 3, 1933 in Youngstown, the son of Nicola and Lucia (Appugliese) Orlando, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1951 graduate of East High School and attended Youngstown College.
Sam was employed as a meat cutter for Century Foods, Loblaws Grocery Store, and then for Mahoning Sparkle Markets. He then became a meat supervisor for Mahoning Sparkle Market until there closing. Sam also worked for Peter J. Schmidt Company in Youngstown and Seaway Foods in Cleveland as a meat merchandiser until his retirement in 1999. He also was a Real Estate Agent in the area from 1970 to 1980.
Sam was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, where he was a lector for 30 years, and was a former parish council member. He also belonged to St. Johns Church bocce league, Hope Cancer Support Group for 5 years, and the Senior Citizens Group of Boardman.
He enjoyed bowling, traveling to Mountaineer, and most of all being with his eight grandchildren.
He was a loving husband and father and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, of 53 years the former Genevieve A. Brak, whom he married Sept. 30, 1953; four daughters, Deborah Orlando, Janice (John) Cartwright, Judy Shirilla, all of Boardman, and Jackie (Mike) Giambattista of Canfield; eight grandchildren, Mark, Megan, and Amy Cartwright, Nicholas and Lindsey Shirilla, and Michael, Jamie, and Allison Giambattista; three brothers, John (Minnie) Orlando and Pat (Barbara) Orlando, both of Boardman, and Mike Orlando of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Rose (Frank) Tufaro and Mary Antal both of Austintown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Nicholas Shirilla, and a grandson Brian Cartwright.

She was born Feb. 22, 1915 in Youngstown, to the late Steve and Lucy (Spehar) Ples.
She was employed as a shipper at Superior Industries, Easco, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of the church, the Croatian Pensioners Club, the American Croatian Citizens Club and the C.F.U. Lodge No. 66.
She was also a member of the Traffic Club, the A.B.W.A., and the United Steel Workers.
Mary leaves her brother, John Ples of Youngstown; her nephews, Robert (Norma) Andrews Jr. of Las Vegas, Gary (Bev) Andrews of Youngstown and Ronald Ples of Canfield; a niece, Renee Ples of Youngstown; a great-niece, Lisa Andrews; and a great-nephew, Michael (Jennifer) Andrews

SEBRING There will be funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Youngstown, for Florence L. Richards, 98, of Copeland Oaks, who died Thursday afternoon at Salem Community Hospital.
Florence was born June 18, 1908 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Milward A. and Margaret Whitney Richards.
She graduated from South High School, received her bachelors degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and received her masters degree from New York University. She was a physical education teacher at Port Clinton High School from 1930 to 1933 and then taught physical education and English at South High School from 1936 until she retired in 1965.
She was a member of Boardman United Methodist Church and its Mary Circle, United Methodist Women, Retired Teachers Association, Suburban Republican Club and the American Association of University Women.
She leaves a sister, Jean R. Jonas of Poland; two nieces, Margaret Ann Jonas of Poland and Barbara Dieringer of Magnolia; and a nephew, Holland W. (Billie) Richards of Kirtland.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Richards and Holland Richards; a sister, Mildred Mosby; and a nephew, Bruce Richards.

Sarah E. Smith, 85
YOUNGSTOWN There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Liberty Presbyterian Church for Sarah E. Smith, 85, who passed away Thursday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mrs. Smith was born July 24, 1921 in Irwin, Pa., a daughter of William F. and Laura C. Steiner McNelly and came to this area in 1960 from Warren where she had moved the previous year.
She was employed by Sturgeons Market on Elm Street for 18 years and retired in 1990. She was a Korean War Air Force veteran.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the church, an Elder and a member of the choir. She volunteered at the Rescue Mission, was a Girl Scout Leader, a graduate of Norwin High School in Irwin Pa., and enjoyed needlepoint, gardening and loved to feed the birds and squirrels.
Her husband, Fred W. Smith Sr., whom she married Sept. 12, 1953, passed away May 12, 1992.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Regis and his wife Susan of Youngstown and Fred Jr. of Coconut Creek, Fla.; a daughter, Cheryl with whom she made her home; a sister, Martha McNelly of North Huningdon, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Sam, Anita and Natalie.
Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arthur, Frank, Clarence and Charles McNelly; and a sister, Mary Staymates.

WESTERVILLE Donald F. Wetzel, 72, passed away Jan. 18.
He was a professional engineer at AT&T and International Director of SME. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University, a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Argenta.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ann; his children, Richard (Nancy), David (Barbara), Daniel (Bridget), and Laura (Dax) Welsheimer; and eight grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hill Funeral Home, 220 S. State St.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church, 313 N. State St. in Westerville.
A private interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.

Elizabeth Anne Wigley, 80
AUSTINTOWN There will be services Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, for Elizabeth Anne Wigley, 80, who passed away Thursday at the Millard Fillmore Suberban Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y., where she had been staying with her son.
Elizabeth was born Dec. 23, 1926 in Philipsburg, Pa., the daughter of John Albert and Edna Smith Mellin.
She was a graduate of Philipsburg High School and later came to the Youngstown area in 1955. Mrs. Wigley had worked as a secretary at the Parkview Counseling Center for more than 22 years before retiring in 1990. She was a charter member of St. Joseph Church.
Her husband, Charles J. Wigley Jr., whom she married Aug. 18, 1951, died Jan. 29, 2003.
She is survived by her two sons, Mark A. (Catherine) Wigley of Poland and Charles J. Wigley III of Buffalo; two grandsons, Adam R. and Logan R. Wigley; a brother-in-law, Willard William Wigley of Pittsburgh; and two sisters-in-law, Lu Ann Mellin of Manitowoc, Wis., and Verna Appleton of Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, John A. Mellin.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
