Rodney Allen Cavanaugh, 54
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. Rodney Allen Cavanaugh, 54, died Thursday, Jan. 18, at his residence.
He was born March 8, 1952 in Youngstown, the son of Doris and Frank Cavanaugh and grew up in Canfield.
Dr. Cavanaugh joined Plattsburgh State Universitys special education faculty in the Center for Educational Studies and Services in 1992. Prior to his career in higher education, he worked in public schools for 15 years and taught adolescents with learning and behavior disorders. He earned both his Ph.D. and master of art degrees from The Ohio State University in applied behavior analysis and special education, He earned his bachelor of science degree from Bowling Green State University of Ohio in special and elementary education.
Professor Cavanaughs research, which resulted in numerous publications and presentations, focused on effective teaching strategies for learners with disabilities and teacher-as-researcher models in education. He was an active member of the Association for Behavior Analysis and the Council for Exceptional Children. He was also a contributing member of a variety of committees at Plattsburgh State. In 1995, Dr. Cavanaugh was named New York State Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Rodney Cavanaugh enjoyed the North Country and the opportunities it offered to hike, kayak, ski, fish and hunt. His favorite hunting buddy was his dog, Sam. He was also an avid fan of P.S.U. hockey, Ohio State football and the Cleveland Browns.
He is survived by his parents, Doris and Frank Cavanaugh of Canfield; his wife, Judy Cavanaugh of Plattsburgh, to whom he was married for 30 years; his sister and brother-in-law, Coleen and Ted Dunchak of Canfield; and his niece, Megan Dunchak of San Francisco.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Canfield Methodist Church in Canfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Rodney Cavanaugh be made to Hospice of the North Country, 43 Durkee St., Suite 200, Plattsburgh, NY 12901 or to a scholarship that is being established in his name at the Center for Educational Studies and Services, Sibley Hall, Plattsburgh State University, Plattsburgh NY 12901 in care of Kathleen Whittier, Special Education Department chairperson.

James Travis Fisher Sr., 85
YOUNGSTOWN There will be funeral service at noon on Thursday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for James Travis Fisher Sr., 85, who departed this life Sunday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
He was born Jan. 11, 1922 in Meridian, Miss., a son of Bernard and Delia Fisher.
Mr. Fisher was a retired cement finisher for Great Lakes Construction Co.
He leaves his wife, the former Eliza A. Cooper; a daughter, Bernice F. (David) Harris of Apopka, Fla.; a son, James T. Fisher Jr. of Youngstown; three sisters, Beulah M. Seal of Meridian, Annie R. Roberts of Memphis, Tenn., and Dorothy M. Spencer of Pontiac, Mich.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Mark, Robert and Eddie Fisher, and a sister, Gracie Williams.

Timothy G. Fletcher, 61
YOUNGSTOWN Timothy G. Fletcher, 61, died Thursday at his residence.
He was born Sept. 25, 1945 in Youngstown, the son of Charles and Virginia Simpson Fletcher.
Mr. Fletcher was employed at Cornerstone as a forklift driver, retiring in 2004. He was also a certified lifeguard and enjoyed fishing, hunting bowling and watching football.
He is survived by two sons, Timothy (Lynn) Fletcher of Whitewater, Wis. and Michael Cruz of Youngstown; three daughters, Tamika (Cecil) Vance of Milwaukee and Aliea Fletcher and Milagros Fletcher, both of Youngstown; six brothers, Dennis (Jackie) Simpson of Beaver Falls, Pa., Anthony (Anna) Fletcher of Alexandria, Minn., Ronald (Doris) Fletcher of Cleveland, Charles (Janice) Fletcher of Milwaukee, Ernest Simpson of Springfield, Mass. and Don Fletcher of Youngstown; eight sisters, Barbara Montgomery, Carol Fletcher, Evelyn Fletcher and Shelda Newell, all of Youngstown, Patricia (William) Wright of Rogers, Patricia Fletcher of Warren, Shirley (Herman) Moxley of Bridgewater, Pa., and Gail Anthony of Milwaukee; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Paul Fletcher, Stanley Fletcher and Charles Fletcher; two sisters, Thelma Banks and Stella Moore; and a grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Home, where calling hours are from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Barbara J. (Ingram) Johnston
SAN DIEGO There will be services at 11 a.m. Friday at the New Bethel Baptist Church for Barbara J. (Ingram) Johnston, of 130 Noeline Court, who departed this life Monday, Jan. 15, at UCSD Medical Center in San Diego.
She was born March 22, 1939 in Youngstown, a daughter of Leroy and Corrine Hampton Ingram.
Mrs. Johnston was employed with General Motors, Lordstown Plant, for 15 years. She moved to San Diego in 1985, where she was employed by Grossmont Unified School District. She was affectionately known as B.J., working with gangs and troubled youth, until she retired in 2001.
She was a loving wife, mother and friend. She found good in everyone and helped them to see the god in themselves, and often thought of others before herself, even after she became ill.
In her free time, Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and looked forward to the last Friday of each month for Girls Night Out.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Thomas Tommy, whom she married May 5, 1979; her son, Kevin Ingram (Markita) of Warren; two daughters, Roni Robinson-Martinez (Pedro) of Boardman and Rhonda Robinson of Warren; three stepdaughters, Kymberly (Gregory) Jones of Raleigh, N.C., Melissa (Michael) Hassen of Temecula, Calif., and Tammy Johnston of Henderson, Nev.; a brother, Leroy Ingram of Boardman; a sister, Joyce (Ingram) Barham (Estus) of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, Jason, Jarrell, Jamila, Jennifer, Bennie, Bianca, Lamont, Dominique, Alexis, Geneva, Markia, Wilson and Mary; five stepgrandchildren, Michael, Gregory, Justin, Bradley and Richard; a great-granddaughter, Ndia; an uncle, Fred (Geri) Ingram of Youngstown; two aunts, Dorothy Cowan of Avingdon, Md., and Rose (Lee) Abrams of Girard; and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Corrine and Leroy Ingram.

Peggy Ann Jones, 68
YOUNGSTOWN There will be funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Gospel Baptist Church in Poland for Peggy Ann Jones, 68, who departed this life Friday morning, Jan. 19, with her family at her side.
She was born July 15, 1938 in Campbell, a daughter of Homer Lee Jones and Leola Shannon Sutton.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the church and a loving mother and grandmother.
She leaves her cherish her memory two daughters, Gwendolyn (Michael Carey) Jones and Sherry (Tyrone Spires) Walden, and four sons, Abram Jones, Eric J. Walden, Willie Jones and Marcus Jones, all of Youngstown; 31 grandchildren, including Michelle Jones, TeAndre Walden, Brittney Justice, Alexandra Jones and Cheree Justice-Jones, whom she reared; 15 great-grandchildren, including Whitney Jones, whom she reared; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Barbara Sutton-Cecil; five brothers, Dale (Mary) Sutton, Leroy (Diane) Sutton, Wayne (Pearline) Sutton, Charles (Rose) Sutton and James Sutton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Nathaniel Sutton; and her grandchildren, Leola Jones, Ashley Jones and James E. Walden.
Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home.

Betty Label, 85
BOYNTON BEACH, FLA. Betty Label, 85, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, in Florida where she had made her home since 1981.
She was the beloved wife of the late Harry Label.
She is survived by her devoted children, Stanley (Joyce) Label and Carole (Dick Probst) Schermer; loving grandchildren, Craig (Mary), Shana (Kent), Douglas, and David (Stacy); and cherished great-grandchildren, Cameron, Parker, Lindsey, Lauren, and Jacob.
Services and interment will be today, Jan. 24, in Florida under the direction of the Beth Israel Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach, Fla.
David R. Lees, 91
AUSTINTOWN There will be services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, for David R. Lees, 91, who passed away Monday at his home.
David was born Oct. 27, 1915 in Youngstown, the son of John and Jesse (Rennie) Lees, and was a lifelong area resident.
He retired from the shipping department of General Fireproofing. He was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the 2nd Armored Division in the North Africa and Sicily campaigns as well as the Battle of the Bulge and received several decorations.
He was a member of the Christ United Presbyterian Church and was an avid bowler.
His wife, the former Jean L. Dieter, whom he married July 21, 1951, passed away Oct. 23, 2003.
He leaves two children, Robin (Sue) Lees of Austintown and April (Larry) Russell of Canfield; a brother, John Lees of Canfield, and five grandchildren.
Besides his wife, David is preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Lees.

Melbeleen Ruth Short, 79
YOUNGSTOWN There will be funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gibson Heights Second Presbyterian Church for Melbeleen Ruth Short, 79, who died Monday morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mrs Short was born July 17, 1927 in Belpre.
She was employed on the assembly line at Packard Electric in Warren for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was an active member and Deacon of the church, a member of the Neighborhood Block Watch, loved dancing, gardening and camping.
Her husband Clinton Short whom she married Feb. 11, 1946, died on April 1, 1990.
She is survived by a son, Gregory A. Short of Youngstown; three daughters, Connie (Dean) Keller of Mineral Ridge, Meggin Sarna of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Marie (Chester) Dlwgosh of McDonald; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gary Danny Short.

Theodore J. Susko, 74
WARREN Theodore J. Susko, 74, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Windsor House at Champion Care Center. He had formerly lived in Washington, D.C., for many years.
Theodore was born June 24, 1932 in Warren, a son of John R. and Margaret D. (Hovanic) Susko.
He graduated from St. Marys High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 23, 1952 to Oct. 20, 1954, and was stationed in Japan for 16 months during the Korean Conflict.
He graduated from Youngstown College in 1957 and then entered Georgetown Law School, graduating with a law degree in 1960. He was an attorney for the Interstate Commerce Commission, retiring in 1984. He attended St. Patricks Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Theodore was an avid reader, enjoyed sports, especially Notre Dame, John F. Kennedy High School and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also enjoyed letter writing, history and attending movies and live theater. He was very dedicated to the law profession and enjoyed being an attorney.
He is survived by two brothers, Msgr. Martin S. Susko of Hubbard and Bernard M. (Bonnie) Susko of Clinton; two sisters, Martha Petracco of Warren and Thelma (Bernard) Bast of Gaylord, Mich.; five nephews; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Sinchak & Sons Funeral Home, 727 E. Market St. in Warren.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Warren, with Msgr. Martin S. Susko officiating, preceded by closing prayers at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.

Anna Walker Tate
YOUNGSTOWN Anne Walker Tate passed away Jan. 20.
Anna Walker was born Dec. 23, 1915, in Hatchet Station, Ga. Her family moved to Campbell when she was 10 years old.
After she graduated from Campbell Memorial High School, she worked in various jobs. One of her jobs was in a beauty shop in Baum Arcade near McKelveys with a beautician, Grace Hill Walker.
In 1935 she began to work for a physician, Dr. William P. Young, in Campbell. Dr. Young shared a reception room with a dentist, Dr. James P. Tate. She and Dr. Tate, affectionately known as J.P., united their lives in holy matrimony on May 27, 1938. Along with her wonderful stepson, Donald, she and J.P. added to their family James and Philip. Their marriage of 52 years ended on Jan. 22, 1990, when Dr. Tate departed this life.
While the boys were young, she was a homemaker, dedicating her life to the care of her family. Only after her sons were in school, she decided to enroll in Youngstown College. In 1950 she graduated with a bachelor of arts in the social studies Program. In 1958 she received a degree in education from Youngstown College and in the 1960s she received her masters degree from Westminster College. She taught at Thorn Hill Elementary School from 1959 until her retirement in 1997. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and a charter member of the Delta Lambda/Youngstown Alumnae Chapter.
She was a devoted member of St. Augustines Episcopal Church serving as Superintendent of the Sunday School, Chairman of the Committee for the History of the parish, a member of the Episcopal Church Women, and various other committees.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Donald, James and Philip (Willia) Tate; her grandchildren, Philip Jr. (Lorrie), Donald J., James P. and Brittany Tate and Winslow (Jennifer) Warren; her great-grandchildren, Sydney, Jensen, and Cameron Tate and Virgil and Wyatt Warren; her cousins, Essie Morton Brown and Bertha Smith Lewis; her grandnephew, Michael (Connie) Shaeffer; and a host of other family and friends.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Augustines Episcopal Church.
Kathryn Zalovich, 82
POLAND A Mass of Resurrection will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Saint Matthias Church for Kathryn Zalovich, 82, who died Sunday in Saint Elizabeth Hospital.
Mrs. Zalovich was born June 4, 1924 in Youngstown, a daughter of Peter and Mary Hnat Chizmar.
Kathryn was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was employed as a telephone operator at Ohio Bell for 20 years retiring in 1962. She was a member of the church.
Her husband, George T. Zalovich, whom she married Aug. 16, 1958, died on Sept. 20, 2002.
She is survived by a son, Gregory Zalovich of Manassas, Va.; four sisters Mary Bednar of Villa Marie, Pa., Helen Chizmar of Boardman, Ann Lisko of Boardman and Margaret (Frank) Kuch of Youngstown; and a brother, Michael (Marge) Chizmar of Canfield.
