Honorable George McKelvey Jones
SOLANA BEACH, CALIF. Honorable George McKelvey Jones crossed the Lords threshold on June 7, 2008.
Bo, as he was known to friends and family, was born on June 6, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio.
Like many of his generation, Bos integrity, compassion and work ethic were born of the Great Depression. The harsh realities of the time, however, did not prevent Bo from becoming an Eagle Scout, an early achievement of which he was justifiably proud throughout a lifetime of accomplishments. In high school, Bo played on both the varsity basketball and tennis teams. During his senior year, he was voted Most Popular Boy and graduated from the Rayen High School as an upstanding member of the Class of 1942
On Dec. 8, 1942, one year following the attack at Pearl Harbor, Bo enlisted in the Army Air Corps and, without hesitation, reported for active duty. He was assigned to the 11th Army Air Corps Weather Squadron, stationed in Alaska to deter a Japanese attack through the North Pacific. Having served his country and done his part to protect the North Pacific, George M. Jones was honorably discharged from the United States Army Air Corps on March 16, 1946.
Bo returned home and enrolled in Ohio State University where he met the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, a top model who was dating Ohio States star quarterback. Undeterred, Bo summoned the courage to ask Gloria Lou Dyson for a date, she agreed.
George McKelvey Jones and Gloria Lou Dyson were married on Aug. 9, 1947. The devoted couple raised three children, daughters, Janet Leigh and Susan Carol Jones; and a son, George M. Jones.
Bo graduated from the Ohio State School of Law in 1951 and became a renowned trial lawyer in the same northeast Ohio courtrooms where Clarence Darrow had made a name for himself a generation earlier.
In 1963, the Governor of Ohio appointed Bo to the Ohio Court of Appeals. Shortly thereafter at the age of 39, Bo sat by assignment on Ohios Supreme Court thereby becoming the youngest jurist to ever sit on the Ohio Supreme Court. Young Bo had become the Honorable George M. Jones, Chief Justice of the Ohio Court of Appeals.
While sitting on the Court of Appeals, Judge Jones presided over appeals argued by some of the best and brightest appellate lawyers in the country, heard arguments in high profile cases and authored legal opinions that are cited as precedent to this day. The Honorable George M. Jones spent 36 years in the courtroom as either a trial lawyer or judge.
During the mid-1980s, Judge Jones transitioned into a period of entrepreneurship. He helped build and manage a regional FM radio station, serving Colorados Rocky Mountains. The stations call sign was, in fact, Bos initials: KGMJ. KGMJ-FM Colorados Country quickly become a dominant radio station and was listened to by people from Aspen to Vail to Summit County. Bo also sat on the Board of Directors of Charter One Financial which was to become part of a $160 billion dollar commercial banking network.
Judge Jones finally slowed down when he moved to Solana Beach, Calif. in 1992. He played golf but mostly enjoyed the proximity of his family, visits from old friends and time with new friends.
After a lifetime of patriotism, quests for justice, successes, friendships and devotion to family, the Lord, in whom he trusted, called Bo home one day after his 84th birthday.
In addition to his parents, George Caufield Jones and Gertrude Brownlee McKelvey, Judge Jones was predeceased by his daughter, Janet Hesseltine; granddaughter, Suzi Hesseltine; and brother, William Brownlee Jones.
Bo is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Gloria Dyson Jones; daughter, Susan Jones Bloch; son, George M. Jones; five grandchildren; brother, John Paul Jones; and sister, Letitia Dolly Sherman.
One of his favorite quotes is found in William Shakespeares King Henry IV, Part 2, There is a history in all mens lives.
The Honorable George M. Jones led a life worth living and leaves a history worth remembering.
In lieu of flowers, the Jones family requests a donation be made to the Spirit of Suzi Foundation, 6475 E. Pacific Coast Hwy., Ste. 338, Long Beach, CA, 90803, which was founded in honor of Judge Jones granddaughter and provides scholarships to students studying aeronautics.

YOUNGSTOWN Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, at the El Emeth Granada Avenue Cemetery Chapel for Beatrice Beebs Newman, 81, who died Saturday morning at Heritage Manor Jewish Home for the Aged.
Mrs. Newman was born Jan. 3, 1927 in Youngstown, the daughter of Louis and Tillie Fried.
Throughout her life, Beebs faced many challenges and adversities. During the Depression, to provide for their family, her father, having lost all of his savings, proudly dug ditches for the WPA, and her mother pieced together hats, dresses, and coats with style that rivaled even the finest fashions of the day.
As a preteen, she wore a whole-body cast for an entire year to correct her disfiguring scoliosis and subsequently endured considerable social isolation. From these trying experiences, Beebs developed great personal strength and determination and unusual sensitivity to the suffering of others.
Mrs. Newman graduated from The Rayen High School in 1945 and earned her B.A. at Youngstown College and M.A. in Fine Arts and Art Education at New York University in 1950. At a very early age, under the tutelage of Margaret Evans, she found art as the vehicle for conveying her experience of life and the world around her.
During the 1940s and 1950s, Newman participated in juried exhibits throughout the country and won numerous awards for her work. She was well-known for her ability to capture human pathos and feeling with power and intensity as well as sensitivity and color.
She often purposely chose to portray struggles of social class and race as well as individual challenges with a deep sense of justice, compassion, spirituality, and joy.
Beebs demonstrated skill in almost every medium -- drawing, oil, watercolor, ceramics, and sculpture,-- and after years of teaching at Hillman and Hayes Junior High Schools, she introduced printmaking and silk screening to Youngstown State University. There she served as an instructor of art for over 30 years and was responsible for the education of many who subsequently became faculty at YSU and other various local and regional schools.
As a teacher, Mrs. Newman was highly respected for her ability to encourage students to bring forth what was within them and to evaluate them more for their effort and sincerity rather than the final product of their work.
In the community, Beebs demonstrated generosity, humility, and willingness to help those in need. Mrs. Newman lived her Jewish identity with devotion and integrity and was an active member of the Temple El Emeth, as well as local chapters of Bnai Brith, Hadassah, and Naamat. She was widely known and loved by her friends for her intelligence, sincerity, insight, and commitment.
Perhaps Mrs. Newmans greatest work of art was her family. She unselfishly and loyally dedicated herself to the wellbeing of her husband and the growth and happiness of her children. Mrs. Newman tirelessly showed interest in each of them as individuals and nurtured them with her abiding love, abundant support, and warm, joyful sense of humor.
Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Sol, whom she married on June 21, 1953; and tragically, both by her sister, Harriet, and her dear beloved daughter, Stefanie Joy.
She is survived by her son, Marc, a family physician in Philadelphia.
Beebs spirit will always live on through the powerful impact of her prolific works of art and the understanding, love, compassion, and joy that she consistently gave to those around her.
Visiting hours will begin at 11 a.m. at the cemetery chapel.
Contributions may be made to the Stefanie Joy Newman Fund for Creative Therapies for the Impaired in care of Temple El Emeth or charity of the donors choice.

Roena Ronnie Scherl, 85
AUSTINTOWN - Roena Ronnie Lorraine Soelberg Scherl, 85, passed away early Friday evening, June 13, 2008, at her home from complications of emphysema, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.
Roena was born in Miles City, Montana June 8, 1923, a daughter of the late Ivar and Irena Soelberg.
She married Robert Bim Scherl June 5, 1945, in El Centro, Calif., where they were both serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII.
Ronnie served two years in the Marine Corps during the war, taking the motto, Free a Marine to Fight, to heart. She joined the U.S. military because none of the men in her family were eligible for the armed services, and felt that a member of her family should serve the country. She was trained and worked in the field of aerology and served on both coasts.
Mrs. Scherl was active in Girl Scouts for over 60 years. In those years, she touched countless young womens lives, introducing them to new experiences, encouraging them, and showing them they could do anything if they tried. One of the accomplishments which she was most proud was leading the OH (orthopedically handicapped) day camp for children with orthopedic disabilities at Girl Scout Camp Millwood. She recruited Girl Scouts and neighborhood boys to serve as counselors. This was the first time that boys were permitted to become members of the Girl Scouts. To ensure the safety of the children at the camp pool, she became an American Red Cross First Aid, Water Safety, and adapted aquatics instructor at age 50. The young camp counselors as well as the disabled campers learned firsthand from Ronnie that differences among people are on the outside, not the inside.
Ronnies love of music and nature was well-known. She was active in Sweet Adelines International Singers, singing in and directing the chorus, and sang in a quartet named the Rag Dolls. She taught previously inexperienced young girls to sing in harmony and to experience the joy and satisfaction of creating beauty. She knew most of the wild flowers growing in northeast Ohio, and passed her appreciation of nature to children, grandchildren, and scouts.
Her thirst for knowledge was legendary, and the family would say, Ask Grandma Ronnie, if they ran into a question they couldnt answer. She continued her life of service well into her 70's by becoming a literacy tutor.
In later years, a great source of joy in her life was getting to know the alpacas at Day Star Alpacas in North Jackson. Dan and Kim Coulter, owners, generously shared their love of alpacas with Roena, recently naming a newborn cria (baby alpaca), Roena in her honor.
She is survived by her husband, Robert, of 63 years; seven children, Charles (Teresa) Scherl of San Diego, Cal., Alice (Lloyd) Slusher of Boardman, Edward (Cheryl) Scherl of Poland, Martha (Keith) Womer of Round Rock, Tex., Cecelia (David) Wilson of Blacklick, Monica (Jeff) Enterline of Austintown, and Connie (Michael) Csernik of Lousiville, Ky.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Norman and Richard Soelberg, and her sister, Wenona Walbaum.
There were no calling hours. Services were held on Saturday, June 21, at St. Brendan Church.
Roenas family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, 44512.
