Ruth Alverta Ackman, 92
COLUMBIANA Ruth Alverta Ackman, 92, passed away at 7:54 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2008, at the Salem Community Hospital from an apparent heart attack.
Mrs. Ackman was born on Aug. 29, 1916 in New Springfield, the daughter of Raymond Sheely and Alverta B. Crum.
After the death of her mother, her father married Sophia Geisman, who raised her as her own daughter. Ruth was a lifelong area resident.
She was employed in earlier years at Sheelys Furniture as a custodian for 10 years. From 1985 to 1992, Ruth was a sales clerk at Victorian Treasures in Columbiana. Mrs. Ackman was a member of the First Christian Church in Columbiana, where she served on the decorating committee. Ruth also enjoyed growing flowers and feeding the birds.
Mrs. Ackman was preceded in death on Aug. 19, 1962 by her husband, Raymond Frederick Ackman, whom she married on March 4, 1939.
Ruth is survived by two daughters, Donna (Willard) Wolfe of Columbiana and Deloris (Bill) Arthurs of Columbiana; three sisters, Marie (James) Yost of New Springfield, Ethel Tompkins of Columbus and Twylah (Andrew) Schmidt of Poland; one brother, Olin Sheely of Poland; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by one brother, Ross Sheely; and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Columbiana with Mr. Len Derico and Mr. Clarence Mansfield officiating.
Burial will be at the Columbiana Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at the Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at the church, prior to the funeral.

Flora Louise Anderson, 58
PITTSBURGH There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Niles Chapel for Flora Louise Anderson, 58, of Warren, who passed away Saturday afternoon at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Flora was born May 9, 1950 in Warren, a daughter of Eugene A. and Louise R. (Holt) Russell Jr.
A homemaker, Flora served in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman. She was a volunteer at the Youngstown VA Clinic for 16 years.
She was a 1969 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a member of the Mineral Ridge Church of Christ, and enjoyed crafts and fishing.
Flora is survived by her parents, both of Niles; two children, Michelle (Jon) Griffin of Warren and Chris E. Anderson of Niles; one sister, Roberta Mattingly of Lawton, Okla.; two brothers, Arthur Russell of Niles and Rex Russell of Burnell, Fla.; one granddaughter, Cassie Anderson; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Lida E. Carroll, 71
AUSTINTOWN Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Lida E. Carroll, 71, formerly of Austintown, who died early Monday morning at her sons home in Canfield.
She was born April 7, 1937 in Bruceton Mills, W.Va., a daughter of Hosea and Hazel (Forman) Liston, and came to this area in 1953.
She retired in 1990 after 20 years as a meat wrapper and deli worker for Bindas Sparkle and several other companies.
She was of the Protestant faith and a member of the Simon Road Church of God in Boardman.
She married Truman Carroll on March 17, 1988, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1996.
She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Cathy) Hinderliter of Canfield, with whom she made her home, and Randall (Deborah Horvath) Hinderliter of Poland. She also leaves behind five brothers, Ora (Norma) Liston of Mill Run, Pa., Errol (Doris) Liston of Bruceton Mills, Bert (Niaomi) Liston of North Jackson, Edward (Betty) Liston of New Middletown, and Hosea (Patty) Liston of Boardman; one sister, Elsie Everly of Bruceton Mills; two grandsons, Todd and Ron Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Donald Mickey of Boardman.
Besides her husband, Lida was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Mickey; and a son, Donald Dean Hinderliter, who died in 1984.

Thomas Barney Fox Jr., 87
AMHERST Thomas Barney Fox Jr., 87, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a short illness.
Thomas was born Jan. 8, 1921 in Wellsville, a son of the late Thomas Fox Sr. and Lucy LaRue Fox.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during WWII. He worked as a craftpipefitter for U.S. Steel in Youngstown for 34 years, before retiring in 1980. He also worked part time at Midas Muffler Shop in Oberlin with his son-in-law, Barry Jones.
He was a member of the Argus Mason Lodge in Canfield No. 545 and enjoyed watching golf on TV.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Freda Humphreys Watson Fox of Amherst; four daughters, Penny Reese of Canton, Carol (Kenneth) Tillery of Yokum, Texas, Pam Channell of Vienna, and Kathy (Nick) LaNeve of McDonald; three stepdaughters, Linda (Barry) Jones of Amherst, Marlene (Jack) Haggerty of Burne, Tenn., and Gayle (Don) Guard of South Connellsville, Pa.; a stepson, Russ (Vicky) Watson of Parrish, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; 37 stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Frank Fox of Lady Lake, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Fox Sr. and Lucy LaRue Fox; daughter, Debbria Fox; six brothers, Ralph, Ervin, and Elmer Fox, and Thorman, Clerence, and George Zonker; and two sisters, Edna Reese and Betty Fulkner.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brooks Funeral Home Inc. in Connellsville, Pa.
The funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Green Ridge Memorial Park in Connellsville.

Lena Lavardio Nero, 80
AUSTINTOWN Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers, for Lena Lavardio Nero, 80, who passed away Sunday morning at Briarfield Manor, where she has been a resident for the last 19 months.
Lena was born Aug. 10, 1928 in Youngstown, a daughter of Joseph and Phyllis LaPolla Lavardio. She grew up in the Briar Hill area, but spent a good part of her life as a resident of Lowellville.
She was a homemaker and at one time a member of the choir for Kathryn Kulhman Ministries.
Lena married Ralph Nero on Oct. 8, 1974, and he passed away on Dec. 31, 1989.
Lena is survived by two sisters, Mary Bowell of Marian Living Center in North Lima and Josephine Peplow of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews throughout the country.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband; stepfather, James Pascarella; a brother, Nicholas Lavardio; and three sisters, Caroline Vanick, Jane Lavardio and Carmel Tatar.
Friends may call one hour before the service at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, where the Rev. Gary Rozier of Hospice will officiate.

Jesse C. North Sr., 68
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips and Holden Funeral Home for Mr. Jesse C. North Sr., 68, who departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at his home.
Mr. North was born March 24, 1940 in Carrollton, Ga., a son of Clarence and Jessie Powell North.
He was a 1958 graduate of South High School and worked at General Motors Lordstown for 31 years, retiring in 2001. He was an Air Force veteran and a member of U.A.W. Local 1112. He attended the Third Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing, music, and social games.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, three children, Angela Huber of Canada, and Charmagne North and Jesse C. North Jr., both of Youngstown; five stepchildren, Shamena Christian and Frankele Christian, both of Atlanta, and Frank Christian, Doreen D. Hill, and Krista Christian, all of Ohio; three sisters, Ruth Woodard, Hallie North and Shirley Benton, all of Youngstown; a brother, Eric North of Finley; 28 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Jo Hudson and Tonya North; and two brothers, Richard and Alton North.

Ruth Anne Montgomery OMelia, 86
HOWLAND Ruth Anne Montgomery OMelia, 86, died on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland following a two month illness with cancer.
Ruth was born Jan. 21, 1922 in Pittsburgh to the late John Laurence Montgomery Sr. and Leila Manor Ward Montgomery.
Ruth was a 1939 graduate of Taylor Alderdice High School in Pittsburgh and attended Monmouth (Illinois) College.
While both were working as summer camp counselors, Ruth and William Adair Lefty OMelia Jr. began a friendship which blossomed into marriage on Oct. 28, 1944 at the Second United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Ruth and Bill then moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, until Bill was discharged from the Navy in 1945. They returned to Pittsburgh and together enjoyed 43 years of marriage during which they golfed, bowled, played bridge, traveled extensively, and were very active in their church.
After her children began school, Ruth was employed for many years as a secretary by the Hebron United Presbyterian Church in Penn Hills, Pa. and retired after 11 years as a secretary at Johnson School in Wilkinsburg, Pa.
Ruth enjoyed reading mysteries, and loved playing bridge. She traveled, attended sporting events, and was a special part of her family and friends activities. She enjoyed camping and vacationing with her son and daughter-in-law, and visiting and traveling with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was a member of two bridge clubs in Howland, and was an avid Howland, Ohio State, and lifetime Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Ruth was a longtime member of the Hebron United Presbyterian Church in Penn Hills and a member of the Howland Community Church since moving to Ohio in March of 1998 to be near her son and family.
She was the first person to purchase an independent living villa at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, where she resided from February of 1999 until her recent illness.
Ruth was an active 57-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was a current member of Chapter EE in Warren. Over the years, she held every P.E.O. chapter office and was the charter president of Chapter AL in Pittsburgh.
Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Carol OMelia of Howland; her daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Gary Logsdon of Utah; her stepsister and husband, Mary Lou and John Bolton of Cincinnati; and her grandsons, Jason (Jodi) Logsdon of Connecticut and Justin Thomas of Howland. She is also survived by another grandson, Scott OMelia of Georgia.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 29, 1987; her brother, John Montgomery Jr.; her step-mother, Virginia Mitchell Montgomery; and her stepbrother, Robert Mitchell.
Affectionately known to her family as Queen Mum, Ruths legacy will be her continual demonstration of unconditional love and devotion to her family. She was courageous while facing her terminal illness, and was steadfast in her faith. While we will dearly miss her presence with us, we will be forever grateful for the joy she brought to our lives.
Ruths family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren.
A celebration of Ruths life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Logsdon of Murraysville, Pa., officiating. Interment will follow at a later date at the Allegheny County Memorial Park in Allison Park, Pa.
Ruth and her family received great comfort from all those who visited, sent cards, and phoned Ruth during her illness, and especially wish to thank the Rev. Jerry Kruse for his many visits.

Carmen J. Rivera, 72
YOUNGSTOWN Carmen J. Rivera, 72, passed away Sunday at the Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.
Carmen was born March 28, 1936 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, a daughter of Manual and Maria Rivera Gonzalez and came to the United States in 1959 and to Ohio in 1966.
She was a home health care aide at the Benjamin Rose Institute in Cleveland, retiring in 1991.
Her husband, Juan B. Rivera, passed away on July 30, 1977.
She leaves her daughters, Isabel V. Rivera and Marisol Rivera, both of Austintown, and Emma (Gilbert) Rivera-Colon of Campbell; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and her companion, Ruben Quinones of Youngstown.
She also leaves her siblings, Manuel Gonzalez Jr. of Cleveland, Patricia Molina of Youngstown, Georgina Figueroa of Florida, Irma Suarez of Youngstown and Chico Gonzalez of Campbell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Delia M. Garcia; and a brother, Amalio Gonzalez.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.

CAMPBELL Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Anthony R. Butchie Romeo, 59, who passed away Sunday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Anthony was born Sept. 5, 1949 in Youngstown, a son of Anthony D. and Carmel Palumbo Romeo.
He was at 1967 graduate of the Campbell Memorial High School. Anthony was an accountant for 20 years for Stambaugh Thompson and a custodian at St. Christines Preschool for seven years.
He devoted his life to, and will be sadly missed by, his mother, Carmel, whom he made his home; his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Bob Suttle of Youngstown; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Cheryl Romeo of Atlanta; and a sister, Marlene Krasinski of Campbell. He was loved and will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, Sean (Amanda), A.J., Sherri (Eric), Jason (Melanie) and Michael; a great-nephew, Jack; and a great-niece, Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony D. Romeo.

Donna L. Rouan, 77
NILES Donna L. Rouan, 77, of 36 Woodland Chase Blvd., died peacefully at 1:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at her residence.
She was born March 24, 1931 in Youngstown, the daughter of Clayton and Mabel Wilson Umbel.
Donna was a 1949 graduate of Struthers High School. She was employed at the Mineral Ridge Middle School cafeteria for five years and was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Mineral Ridge, its Womens Guild, and Niles Senior Center, and enjoyed reading, playing cards, and spending time with her 22 grandchildren. She was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
Her husband, Leo Wayne Rouan, whom she married Oct. 18, 1952, died Feb. 3, 2001.
Donna, who was a very dedicated mother and one of the last true stay at home moms, will be deeply missed by six sons, Gregory Rouan and his wife, Kay of Cincinnati, Kevin Rouan and his wife, Ava of Boardman, Robert Rouan and his wife, Laurena of Niles, Richard Rouan of Liberty, William Rouan of Austintown, and David Rouan and his wife, Kim of Mineral Ridge; two brothers, William Umbel and his wife, Alyshia of Youngstown and James Umbel and his wife, Vera of Lorain; two sisters, Kay McGowen and her husband, Charles of Howland and Barbara Phillips and her husband, John of Aurora; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles, where Fr. Richard Murphy, of St. Marys Church in Mineral Ridge, will conduct prayers at 5 p.m.

WEST MIDDLESEX, PA. James P. Whitmore Jr., 20, died Saturday evening, Oct. 4, 2008, at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Farrell, Pa.
He was born July 14, 1988 in Warren, a son of James P. and Kim M. Greene Whitmore and lived in this area and Scottsdale, Ariz.
Jimmy was a free spirit who enjoyed music and being a DJ. He was quick with a joke and lit up every room he walked into. He will be sadly missed by each and everyone whose life he touched.
He leaves his mother, Kim Whitmore-Steele of West Middlesex; his father and stepmother, James P. and Sandy Whitmore of Vienna; two sisters, NaDeen (Paul) Naegle and Leah B. (Zachary) Cook, both of Tempe, Ariz.; three half sisters, Mande, Jamie, and Jaki; two stepbrothers, Ricky and Michael Shae; grandmothers, Elaine Greene of West Middlesex, and Geraldine B. Whitmore of Brookfield; a niece, Charlette Frederick; and a nephew, Soren Naegle.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Edward T. Greene Sr. and Jack P. Whitmore; and an uncle, Edward T. Greene Jr.

SALEM Funeral services will be at noon on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Boardman, for Ruth Marie Boyd Yauman, 87, of Essex of Salem III, who died early Monday morning.
Ruth was born Oct. 8, 1920 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Charles Porter and Emmy Goltz Boyd.
She graduated from South High in 1938 and had worked at Sears Department Store. Ruth was a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Harold Eugene Yauman, whom she married June 25, 1941, died Nov. 20, 1975.
She leaves her son, Roger D. (Kim) Yauman of Alliance; two daughters, Esther Elaine (James) Watt of Struthers and Dr. Beth Ellen Yauman-Diemand of Chesterland; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Laura Agnes Boyd Jones of Youngstown.
Besides her parents and her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jane Beatty; and a brother, Charles Porter Boyd Jr.
