Elvin E. Charity, 79

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Third Baptist Church for Elvin E. Charity, 79, who departed this life Monday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Charity was born Aug. 31, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of Burl Sr. and Collin A. Washington Charity.

He retired in 1983 as a foreman at Republic Steel after 46 years. He worked for the city of Youngstown as a minority business officer and was the city park commissioner. He served on the Board of Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, was a former president of North High School Boosters, and was an Army veteran.

He leaves his wife, the former Laura J. Fortune, whom he married Nov. 10, 1949; children, Laura (Burnice) Hairston of Youngstown, Atty. Elvin E. Charity of Chicago, Dr. Allen A. (Claudia) Charity of Hubbard and Robert B. Charity of College Park, Ga.; siblings, Robert (Gertrude) Charity, Earl (Carol) Charity, and Kenneth (Patricia) Charity, all of Youngstown, Franklin (Rachael) Charity of Carrollton, Texas and Ruby (Nganga) Njoroge of Columbus; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

His parents; a sister, Bunise Ellison; and four brothers, Ronnie, Burl Jr., Joseph and Nathaniel Charity, preceded him in death.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irene O’Neil Clarke, 82

CANFIELD – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Irene O’Neil Clarke, 82, who died Monday afternoon at Mercy Medical Center in Canton after suffering a stroke a week ago.

Mrs. Clarke was born Feb. 19, 1926 in Youngstown, the daughter of George and Daisy Godward O’Neil.

Irene graduated from East High School in 1944. She was a lifelong homemaker, and a member of St. Christine Parish and of its Infant Jesus of Prague.

Her husband, Joseph P. Clarke, whom she married Oct. 2, 1948, died March 19, 1997.

She is survived by four children, Joseph P. (Colleen) Clarke Jr. of St. Charles, Ill., Robert (Laura) of Tampa, Fla., Elaine (Daniel) Gromada of Canfield and Susan (Randy) Brayer of North Canton; 12 grandchildren, Joseph (Teresa) Clarke, Lynn Clarke, Colleen Clarke, Susan (Robert) Reehill, James Clarke, Robert (Kelli) Clarke, Rachel Gromada, Randall Brayer Jr., James Gromada, Anthony Gromada, Kevin Brayer, and Victoria Brayer; six great-grandchildren, Kayla Caban, Korben Reehill, Anastasia Brayer, Cole Clarke, Randall Brayer III, and Jack Reehill; two sisters, Margaret McMahon of Austintown and Rita (William) Yankle of Youngstown; two brothers, George (Joan) O’Neil of Toledo and Edward (Beverly) O’Neil of Puyallup, Wash.; and a sister-in-law, Barbara O’Neil of Hubbard.

Besides her parents and husband, Irene was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Bridgette Clarke and Daniel Gromada Jr.; and a brother, Thomas E. O’Neil Sr.

Violet M. Cua, 85

“Together Again”

NILES – Violet M. Cua, 85, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at St. Joseph Health Center Eastland in Warren.

She was born Dec. 13, 1922 in Girard, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Barninger Jenkins.

Violet was employed at Packard Electric as a solderer during WWII for six years and retired in 1987 from St. Joseph’s Riverside Hospital after 22 years of dedicated service as a nursing assistant. She is fondly remembered by the St. Joe’s employees and physicians as “Little Vi.”

In 1965, Violet obtained her practical nurse diploma, prior to practical nurses becoming licensed.

Violet enjoyed playing the harmonica, piano, reading her bible daily, and feeding the birds. She was a member of the World Organization of Poetry and had many of her poems published. She received numerous awards for her poems. When she was younger, she also enjoyed tap dancing and most of all, Violet cherished her time spent with her family, relatives, and friends.

She will be deeply missed by four daughters, Pamela Hinder of Niles, Kimberly Jones and her husband, Thomas, with whom she made her home, Heidi Robertson of Newton Falls, and Tanya Pigg and her husband, William of Ravenna; a sister, Betty Mymo and her husband, James of Niles; and her cherished 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Robertson and Carmen Cua; two brothers, Benjamin Baxter and Daniel Jenkins; and two sisters, Bernice Ferguson and Dorothy Richard; a niece, Lillian Jewell; and nephews, Benjamin Baxter Jr. and Lewellyn Jenkins.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

The funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles, with the Rev. John Preusser officiating.

Burial will be at St. Stephen Cemetery.

Marie J. Dellagnena, 87

GIRARD – A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, at St. Rose Church for Marie J. Dellagnena, 87, who passed away Sept. 25, 2008, in Florida.

Marie was born Feb. 11, 1921 in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Agnes (Natale) Pozzuto.

Marie owned and operated Marie Dell’s Beauty Salon for 25 years. She retired at the age of 55 from the salon.

She was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard, St. Rose Sr. Parishioners, Girard Senior Citizens, and Knight of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary.

Marie married Tony E. Dellagnena on June 6, 1946. Tony passed away May 18, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Anthony Dellagnena of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Dale Richard of Hudson, Fla.; a sister, Margaret Bella of Girard; and one grandchild.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tony; and a sister, Amelia Basciano.

Interment was held Sept. 30 at Girard City Cemetery.


Janet Lee Flauto, 64

POLAND – Janet Lee Flauto, 64, of 1814 Canavan Drive, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman, where she was taken after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

The daughter of John Fecko, Mrs. Flauto was born Jan. 17, 1944 in Warren. She was a lifelong resident of the area.

Mrs. Flauto was a medical receptionist in the Department of Internal Medicine at Forum Health, a position she held for nearly 20 years.

Mrs. Flauto graduated from Chaney High School in 1961 as well as from the Youngstown Business School, earning a clerical degree.

She leaves two sons, Donald S. and his wife, Heather of Delaware, Ohio and Jeffrey M. and his wife, Shannon of Youngstown; and a brother, John Fecko of San Diego; her companion, Jim Mahon, with whom she made her home; and her former husband and best friend, James Flauto of Austintown.

She leaves four grandsons, Matthew (6), and Joseph (3), as well as Alex (19) and Marc (15). Her grandchildren were the absolute pride and joy of her life.

Mrs. Flauto was well known for being an extremely caring and generous person who touched the lives of all those around her. Her warm hearted and loving nature will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main Street, Poland.

The funeral service will be at the funeral home Saturday at 10 a.m.

Roberta M. “Betty” Fry, 86

“Together Again”

HUBBARD – Roberta M. “Betty” Fry, 86, died Tuesday morning, Oct., 7, 2008, at Liberty Health Care Center.

She was born Oct. 26, 1921 in Altoona, Pa., a daughter of George and Maude Stoner and moved to Hubbard in 1959.

Betty was a waitress for the Ringside Restaurant in Youngstown for 25 years. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Canfield.

She enjoyed music and sang with the Youngstown Chapter of Sweet Adelines, played organ and sang at many area churches. She was a former member of the Corner House Christian Church and the Central Christian Church choirs. She also enjoyed bowling and bowled with the early Tuesday night bowling league at Bell Wick Bowl in Hubbard.

Her husband, Cloyde J. Fry Sr., whom she married June 18, 1943, died Jan. 3, 1992.

She leaves two sons, Delbert W. (Donna) Fry of Boardman and Cloyde J. (Kathy) Fry Jr. of Ft. Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Esther F. (Fred) Tarasi and Patricia A. Boyle, both of Hubbard; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her twin brother, Robert Stoner; and a sister, Marian Archer.

A private funeral service will be held.

Edward R. Hallas, 98

POLAND – Edward R. Hallas, 98, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Ohio State Veteran’s Home in Sandusky.

Mr. Hallas was born Aug. 4, 1910 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Irene Beck Hallas. He was raised in Struthers, and lived in Youngstown until moving to Poland in 1978.

He attended Struthers High School and worked as a heater for LTV for 39 years, retiring in 1973.

Mr. Hallas was a U.S. Army veteran serving as a Master Sergeant during WWII. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.

Mr. Hallas was an avid boater, swimmer, and golfer and enjoyed going to his place at Lake Erie. He was a lifelong member of the Red Brook Boat Club in Ashtabula and a former member of the United States Power Squadron.

His wife, the former Lillian Summers, whom he married June 28, 1941, died Nov. 10, 2004.

He leaves two sons, Howard (Suzie) Hallas of Poland and Robbie (Marty) Hallas of North Jackson; three grandchildren, Keith Hallas, Sara Hallas, and Bobby (Erin) Hallas; and one great-grandchild, Angelina Hallas.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Francis Hallas.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave. in Youngstown.

Friends will be received on Friday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m., prior to the service at the church.

Edith M. Harris, 90

ANN ARBOR, MICH. – Edith M. Harris, 90, died on Oct. 6, in Ann Arbor.

The daughter of Henry Lender and Edna Grimm. She was born in Youngstown, where she lived the majority of her life. She was married to Paul E. Harris, who in 1969 preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Harris of Ann Arbor; and nieces and nephews in Ohio, Colorado, and Vermont.

Edith retired from Strouss’ Department store in 1973, where she held sales and clerical positions prior to becoming the buyer for the Art and Needlework department.

She served as president of the Friends of the Boardman Library during many of its formative years. She was a member of the Mahoning County Genealogy Society and Order of the Eastern Star, Miriam Chapter.

There will be a funeral service at noon on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave.in Youngstown.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Catherine Havrilla, 95

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, for Mrs. Catherine Havrilla, 95, who entered into rest early Wednesday at Greenbriar Health Care.

She was born Feb. 9, 1913 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Samuel and Martha (Scigelski) Bralish.

She was a homemaker and a member of the church.

Her husband, Andrew Havrilla, whom she married Sept. 1, 1934, passed away Sept. 15, 1976.

Catherine will be sadly missed by many, including her sons, Andrew (Elaine) Havrilla and Michael (Barbara) Havrilla, both of Youngstown; a daughter, Martha (Steve) Wilaj of Struthers; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, John Havrilla; and four brothers, Joseph, Nicholas, Steve and John Bralish.

Joseph D. Johns Jr., 35

AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Joseph D. Johns Jr, 35, who died Tuesday morning.

Joe was born June 28, 1973 in Youngstown, the son of Joseph D. and Renae (Galla) Johns Sr.

Joe graduated from Fitch High School in 1991, was of the Lutheran faith.

He enjoyed fishing, motorcycle runs, car shows, collecting antiques and was a member of the Abate Motorcycle Club. He was employed in the paint department of General Motors, Lordstown.

Joe is survived by his parents, Joseph and Renae; daughter, Alyssa of Mineral Ridge; son, Joseph D. Johns III of North Jackson. He is also survived by his sister, Rochelle (Randy) Tharp of Austintown; brothers, Jason P. (Julia) Johns of Tucson, Ariz., James (Aya Jane) Johns of Riverside, Calif., Jeremy (Amy) Johns of Gilbert, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews, Adam, Kaitlyn, Austin, Aaron, Quentin and Braden. Joe will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends.

Evangelist Fannie L. Johnson, 64

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Metro Assembly of God, for Evangelist Fannie L. Johnson, 64, known to some at “Sallee,” who departed this life Oct. 3, 2008.

Evangelist Johnson was born March 1, 1944 in Birmingham. Ala., the daughter of James and Ophelia Cotton Wilson.

She was a graduate of North High School and Youngstown College and she had attended the Dana School of Music.

She had been employed as a teacher's aide in the Youngstown School system. She had been a secretary for the Youngstown Hospital Association at South Side Hospital and had also been employed at General Electric.

Being a child of God of long- standing, her true conversion came in December of 1984, where she sold out for the Lord completely. Since that time, she served the Lord as a disciple of Christ Jesus through years of extensive bible study and courses.

She was ordained as an Evangelist in February of 1993 and served as a minister for the Lighthouse Ministries International, Evangel Assembly of God Church and was the founder of Splendor in the Son Ministries. She was also the coordinator and treasurer of Ladies of the Light Ministries. She was a World Harvest Prayer intercessor and prayed for saints everywhere and for the salvation of lost souls. She served the community as Cohasset Block Club president and had been a presiding judge for the Board of Elections. She was an Associate Minister at the Metro Assembly of God.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 26 years, Vohu; a daughter, Teresa Lynn Ross and her husband, Nathan; a stepdaughter, Vernice Lynn Johnson of Warren; two stepsons, Vaughn Eric (Lois) Johnson of Warren and Calvin (Lori) Harrison of Columbus; a foster son, Charles Frazier, at home; a sister, Esther Crum Ross of Youngstown; two brothers, George (Judy) Wilson of Columbus and Raymond (Patty) Wilson of Youngstown; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, George Allen Miller; one great-grandchild; and a foster son, Angelo Ogletree.

Friends may call one hour prior to the services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Steve Kohut, 87

STRUTHERS - Steve Kohut, 87, passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, 2008, at Select Specialty Hospital in Youngstown.

Steve was born July 13, 1921 in Ukraine, a son of Leon and Julia Kohut, and came to America and the Youngstown area in 1951.

He worked as a construction worker, worked for a time at Sharon Steel in Lowellville, and worked for Fitzsimmons Steel in Campbell for 10 years, retiring in the early 1980s.

Mr. Kohut was a member of the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church.

He leaves three stepchildren, Anna (Larry) Blazina of Girard, Kateryna (Myron) Bebko of Seven Hills, and Ted (Mary Lou) Kralka of Liberty Township; seven grandchildren, Lawrence (Kelly) Blazina, Steve (Heather) Blazina, Andrij Bebko, Taras (Denise) Bebko, Nicole (Rob) Krafchek, Katie Blazina, and Adam Kralka; and four great-grandchildren, Payton Krafchek, and Tyler, Jacob, and Savannah Blazina.

His wife, Mary Starchenko Kralka Kohut, whom he married Oct. 19, 1974, passed away March 24, 2007. Three brothers and two sisters are also deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church on Rayen Avenue.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

Marie E. Lago, 58

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Marie E. Lago, 58, passed away Wednesday Oct. 8, 2008 at her residence.

Marie was born March 17, 1950 in Youngstown.

She was a 1968 graduate of Liberty High School. She worked at General Motors for 10 years, and then for Dr. Huang for 10 years. She was a member of St. Rose Church where she taught catechism for 24 years.

She is survived by her parents, Mitchell and Dorothy Moffo Rushwin of Liberty Twp.; her husband, John, whom she married Oct. 3, 1970; her daughters, Kristen (Jason) Gallo, and Melissa (Jeff) Lago-Jones of Columbus; a sister, Barbara (Ron) Cheatham of Liberty Twp.; and five granddaughters, Jessie, Isabella, Goavanna, Ava, and Maia.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, Richard and Robert.

Services will held on Saturday at noon at St. Rose Church preceded by a prayer service at 11:30 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home where visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 7.p.m.

Internment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.

Edward J. “Ted” Linsley, 79

EAST PALESTINE – Edward J. “Ted” Linsley, 79, of 563 Alice St., passed away at 9:08 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Salem Community Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past five days.

Ted was born April 25, 1929 in Youngstown, a son of the late Edward “Ned” and Opechee Johnson Linsley.

He was a graduate of South High School, and later attended Youngstown College and graduated from the Cleveland School of Mortuary Science. Following graduation, he was drafted and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return to the U.S., he was employed with area funeral homes, until moving to East Palestine in 1959. He assumed management of the former Oliver Funeral Home that year, and in 1963 purchased the firm, eventually forming a partnership with his son, Roger, until his retirement in 1991.

He was a member of the First Church of Christ, where he had served as a deacon at one time. Other memberships included the East Palestine Kiwanis Club, where he was a past president and secretary, the American Legion Post 31, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579, East Palestine Lodge No. 417 F.& A.M.

For many years, he had served as chairman of the Red Cross Blood Bank Program in East Palestine, and had also served as a director with the former New Waterford Bank. He served on the board of education for the East Palestine City School District in the early 1970s. He had always enjoyed playing golf, while he was a member of the East Palestine Country Club.

His wife, the former Doris Harshman, whom he married June 30, 1951, preceded him in death Aug. 15, 2006.

Ted is survived by his son, Roger, and wife, Lynn of East Palestine; a daughter, Laurel L. Holland of Tamarac, Fla.; three grandchildren, all of whom he was extremely proud, Jared (Emily) Linsley of Lebanon, Matthew W. Linsley of Exeter, England, and Brooke K. Linsley of East Palestine; and a brother, Frank Linsley of Bellefonte, Pa.; as well as his caregiver, Joyce Davis, who assisted the family for the past three years.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, with Robert J. Helbeck, of the church, officiating.

Entombment will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

TaYon Jordan McKinley, 3 months

YOUNGSTOWN – TaYon Jordan McKinley, 3 months, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

He was born June 24, 2008 in Youngstown, a son of Dwayne Moody and LeTaya McKinley.

He is survived by his parents, Dwayne Moody and LeTaya McKinley; sister, TeNya McKinley; grandparents, Pamela (Willie) Henderson of Youngstown, James Robinson of Youngstown, and Willie McKinley of Youngstown; great-grandmother, Alberta Robinson of Youngstown; aunt, LeQuaila Henderson of Youngstown; uncles, Raymond Henderson of Youngstown; William McKinley of Youngstown and Michael Hopkins of Youngstown; and godfather, Dantae Bebbs of Youngstown.

He was preceded by a brother, Willie McKinley; and great-grandparents, Carl and Delores Queener and Ervin Robinson Jr.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Angelo A. Principi, 88

CHAMPION TOWNSHIP – Angelo A. Principi, 88, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 8, 2008, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, from complications of prostate cancer.

Angelo was born Aug. 18, 1920 in Warren, the son of Michael A. and Michelina Vescera Principi.

He was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He retired from Van Huffel Tube Corp. in 1971, and later founded Principi Realty, where he was active until the early 2000’s. He was an active member of St. William Parish and member of the Cinquanta Club of the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Angelo was a lifelong avid golfer and a member of the Trumbull Country Club for several years. He was also very involved in the USS LST 124 Navy Reunion activities. He was a devoted husband, loving father and loyal friend to many, who will all miss him dearly.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Audrey L. Thellman Principi, whom he married in 1945; a son, David (Margaret “Peg”) Principi of Warren; a daughter, Kathy Principi, M.D. of Healdsburg, Calif.; a granddaughter, Margeaux Walter of New York; a brother, James J. (Carmela) Mariano Sr. of Warren; and a sister, Michelina Principi of Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph “Gigi” and Valentino Principi, and Patrick Mariano Sr.; and sisters, Josephine D’Amico and Phyllis Padgett.

Funeral services will be Saturday Oct. 11, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, with Fr. Michael Balash officiating.

Friends may call on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road N.E. in Warren, and also Saturday morning one half hour prior to services.

Burial will be at All Souls Cemetery with military honors.

Dom “Coach” Rosselli

POLAND - Dominic Louis “Coach” Rosselli Sr., 93, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2008, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Rosselli was born, one of seven boys, to Marcella (Agnello) and Alphonso Rosselli on March 19, 1915 in Youngstown, and was raised in Smokey Hollow, where his deep family values and commitment to work were rooted.

He was married for 66 years to the love of his life, Constance Napolitano Rosselli.

Mr. Rosselli was a proud graduate of The Rayen School, and a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as president of his class and continued to meet with a small group of fellow alumni into the 1990s. His image is part of the historic mural at The Rayen School.

He served with the U.S. Air Force in Special Services/Morale Support. He was stationed in California during WWII and served as a Captain with the 4126th AAF BU SBAAF, providing support activities for the troops during this difficult time.

Mr. Rosselli earned his undergraduate degree in education from Geneva College, where he was a standout basketball and football player. He earned a masters degree from The University of Pittsburgh, and he received an honorary doctorate degree of Humane Letters from Youngstown State University in 2005.

His love of sports began with ping pong games at Youngstown’s YMCA. His first awards included being named Ping Pong Champion. Coach Rosselli started his career at Youngstown College as assistant coach to both the football and men’s basketball teams. As head men’s basketball coach, Mr. Rosselli established a final record of 589-388, in addition to leading YSU to eight 20-win seasons, 26 winning seasons, 19 postseason victories, and appearances in four NAIA National Tournaments, including two Elite Eight appearances, and nine NCAA Regional Tournaments. During the 1970s, he was part of the group of illustrious coaches who had achieved 500 or more wins. This group included Adolph Rupp, Ray Meyers and John Wooden.

In 1948, Coach Rosselli initiated the YSU baseball team, which he coached for 24 years earning a 418-219 record that includes two NAIA District Championships and three NCAA Playoff appearances. Through his 39-year tenure as basketball and baseball coach at Youngstown College and Youngstown State University, he tallied a record of 1,007-607, placing him 10th in NCAA history in total collegiate victories.

Throughout his career, Mr. Rosselli was remembered not just as a coach, but as a mentor to student athletes. He was equally proud of his players’ achievements on and off the court. He sought to share his love of sport and work with as many young people as possible. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he started the intramural activities program at Youngstown College. He also served as the first faculty advisor to Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity (Youngstown chapter), which recently recognized him as an honorary brother.

During his successful career, Coach Rosselli received numerous honors and awards from national, state and local organizations including the 1995 YSU Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award, NCAA Division IV Coach of the Year, two-time Ohio College Coach of the Year, national and local Italian Coach of the Year and 1999 Penguin of Year.

He was inducted into the Youngstown Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978, Charter Class of YSU Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Geneva College Hall of Fame. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Salvation Army’s Youth Award. He was named to Greater Youngstown's Baseball Old Timers’ Hall of Fame. He also received cherished awards from the Youngstown’s Park and Recreation Commission, recognition from the Youngstown community that provided him with many free opportunities during his childhood, which meant a great deal to him.

A bronze statue on the south patio of the YSU’s Beeghly Center, donated by the Tony Lariccia family, commemorates his career at YSU. Always, he felt these awards and accolades belonged to the players and the community of fans who supported him and his teams.

Mr. Rosselli was a craftsmen who enjoyed the challenge of new building projects. He built houses and boat docks, furniture and toys. He was “Mr. Fix It” to his family and friends. He volunteered his skills for a short time to Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. Rosselli was a member of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Anthony's Churches in Youngstown, where he was actively involved in their religious communities. His church families brought him great joy. He was among the first babies to be baptized at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel and was married there. For years, he and his wife enjoyed making pizza and Easter bread with St. Anthony’s church friends very early on Friday mornings.

Besides his wife, Constance Napolitano Rosselli, whom he married Nov. 8, 1941, he leaves three daughters and a son, Rosanne Volpini (Jim Ditch, fiance) of Poland, Mary Lou Africa (James) of Aurora, Stephanie Rosselli (Gene Grupp) and Dominic Louis Rosselli Jr. (Eleanor Siovasky) of Poland; 10 grandchildren, Connie (Tony) Wolgamuth of Bloomington, Ill., Arthur (Tami) Volpini and Stephanie (Greg) Hann of Poland, Amy (Charles) Drew of Washington D.C., Joseph Callahan of Portland, Ore., James Africa of Aurora, Anne Callahan of New York City, Alexis Africa of Williamsburg, Va., and Dominic Louis Rosselli III and Anthony Rosselli, both of Poland; three great-grandchildren, Ellianna and Arthur Volpini of Poland and Preston Drew of Washington D.C.; and many dear nieces and nephews. He leaves the Eugene Grupp extended family and Tony, Mary, Natalie and Dana Lariccia, whom he cherished as family.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Joseph, Louis and Tony “Bull” Rosselli; two infant brothers, Frank and Joseph Rosselli; and two granddaughters, Christina and Alyssa Rosselli. His stepmother, Anna Thomas; and stepbrothers and stepsisters, Victor, William, and Patsy Thomas, Irene Sequella and Doris Rango are also deceased.

Mr. Rosselli’s legacy as a kindhearted and a unselfish father, coach and friend is a testament to his love of family, friends and the Youngstown community.

The family thanks St Elizabeth’s Hospital Coronary Care and MVI. They offer special thanks to Dr. Thomas Detesco for his compassionate care for close to 30 years.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the Youngstown State University, Beeghly Center Main Lobby from 4 to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio and the Rev. Msgr. John H. DeMarinis at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 343 via Mount Carmel Way in Youngstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Youngstown State University Foundation/Dominic Rosselli Scholarship, Geneva College, the National Kidney Foundation, Inc. or the donor’s charity of choice in Mr. Rosselli's name.

Edna L. (Christian) Smith, 97

SALEM - Edna L. (Christian) Smith, 97, died at 10 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at Hospice House in Poland.

She was born on Dec. 7, 1910 in Olive Hill, Ky., daughter of the late William Tallmadge and Viola Belle “Ola” (Stamper) Christian.

As a child, she lived in New Mexico, Missouri, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. After she married her husband, Carl C. Smith, she settled in Cleveland.

She was employed for many years as a secretary for Harold C. Schott. She lived for those two week vacations, as she loved to travel. She talked many times of her trips to each and every state in the union and several to Europe. Many of her trips are reflected in her poetry writings.

Upon retirement, she and Carl moved to Crystal River, Fla. Her days were filled with writing poetry, genealogy, and playing bridge and golf. They retired from retirement in their late 80s and moved back north, living at Arrowhead in Columbiana. After the death of her husband, Edna made her home with her daughter, Mona and son-in-law, Norm in Green Township.

She was a published poet and won several awards in Florida. She traced her father’s family back to pre-revolutionary war era. The Charles Christian family of Amherst, Va. were supporters of the revolution and this would of allowed her membership in the DAR. Her final years were spent reading about seven novels a week, playing bridge weekly and doing The Vindicator’s daily crossword puzzle in ink.

Edna is survived by her daughters, Shirley Cowen of Cleveland and Mona Bixler of Green Township in Salem; her grandchildren, Tim, Jeff and Jon Cowen, all of Cleveland, Shelia Henson of Cleveland, and Sharon Bernstein of Germantown, Md.; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Pat Martin of Indialantic, Fla.

She was preceded in death by Mona L. Wilking, Irene E. Le Beouf, and Raymond S. Christian.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Oct. 11, 2008, at the Christian Life Center of the Greenford Christian Church in Greenford with the Rev Jeff Hugus of the church, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Philomena G. Tamulionis, 87

POLAND – Philomena G. Tamulionis, 87, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

She was born May 27, 1921 in Bologna, Italy, the daughter of the late Francais and Mary (Fusco) Graziano.

She retired from Packard Electric in 1982 after 38 years. She was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard, Girard Senior Citizens, and Packard Golf and Bowling Team. She loved sewing, cooking and knitting afghans.

She married Edward Tamulionis in 1948, and he passed away in 1987.

She is survived by two sons, Edward T. (Lauren) Tamulonis of Poland and Myron P. Tamulonis of Mineral Ridge; and two granddaughters, Myra and Karly.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Antoinette Choppa and Michelina Rappach.

Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church with prayers at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas H. Thompson, 51

HUBBARD – Thomas H. Thompson, 51, formerly of Hubbard, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in Mohave County, Ariz., as a results of an automobile accident.

He was born July 9, 1957 in Youngstown, a son of Robert and Pauline Forsythe Thompson, and lived most of his life in Hubbard before moving to Arizona a year ago.

Tom was a carpenter for over 20 years working out of the Carpenter’s Union.

He was of the Presbyterian faith, enjoyed hunting and fishing and served with the U.S. Navy.

He leaves a son, Thomas “T.J.” H. Thompson Jr. of Masury; one daughter, Kelsy D. Thompson of Masury; a sister, Ruthanne (Ty) Lowe of Masury; two nephews, Bobby and Jordan Thompson of Masury; his former wife, Kim Thompson of Masury.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Harold Thompson.

There are no calling hours.

Frank Joseph “Colt” Tombo Sr., 86

STRUTHERS - Frank Joseph “Colt” Tombo Sr., 86, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, peacefully at his home with his family at his side.

Mr. Tombo was born June 7, 1922 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Jesse Tianni Tombo.

He worked as a crane man for Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 32 years, retiring in 1977. After retirement, Mr. Tombo worked for 23 more years with his wife at Avis Rental Car. He was a former member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII in the 83rd Armored Division under General Patton’s Third Army. Mr. Tombo took part in D-Day, the Normandy Invasion, the Battle at St. Lo, the Battle of the Bulge, and he landed on Omaha Beach in France. He received three combat theatre medals and a Bronze Star for his service.

His wife, the former Serene M. DeRose, whom he married Jan. 3, 1948, died Aug. 25, 2003.

He leaves his son, Frank (Joan) Tombo Jr. of Poland; two granddaughters, Kelly (Mark) Minehart of Poland and Brandi (Brian) Hermiller of Pittsburgh; four great-grandchildren, Jack and Megan Minehart and Kate and Matthew Hermiller; and his brother, Tony (Helen “Skippy”) Tombo of Liberty.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bert and Al Tombo; and one sister, Lena Gentile.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

Kenneth J. “Ken” Vaupel

FOWLER – There will be a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Churchill United Methodist Church for Kenneth J. “Ken” Vaupel, who passed away at home Sunday, Sept. 28, after an eight month battle with cancer.

Ken was born Dec. 2, 1941, the son of Kenneth H. and Elizabeth Rowe Vaupel.

He served with the U.S. Army, including a 13-month tour of duty in Korea, and later he attended ATT. He retired in 1999 from Commercial Intertech (now Parker Hannifin) after 38 years of service as a design draftsman and later as a building maintenance supervisor.

Ken enjoyed being surrounded by people. He was a former Boy Scout leader, baseball coach, and an active supporter of any activity his children participated in. He enjoyed spectator sports, played bridge, biked, bowled, golfed, and displayed his vintage car at car shows. He especially enjoyed singing in his church chancel choir.

Ken will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Carol Boyles, whom he married Sept. 5, 1964; three sons, Brian (Robin) of Hubbard, Kevin (Tina) of Fowler and Craig (Gayle) of Warren; six granddaughters, Addisen, Kyndall, Kameron, Olivia, Sydney, and Ella; two sisters, Joyce (David) Baker of Hubbard and Mary Jayne (John) Hummel of Galloway; and many other friends and relatives.

There will be calling hours Saturday one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the Churchill United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that everyone perform an anonymous good deed. Lianne Vernell

HUBBARD – Lianne Vernell, born Sept. 12, 1986, went to the arms of the angels on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008.

She is survived by her mother, Jeanne and father, Anthony; grandmothers, Mary Vernell and Elizabeth Budd; aunts, Dianne Murray and Elizabeth (George) Rimko; uncles, Andrew (Sharon) Budd, William Budd, James (Kathy) Budd and Richard (Michele) Budd; numerous cousins; and special friends, Dan Keating, Vera Freels and Shawn Conatser. Special angels in Lianne’s life were Dr. Imber Coppinger, Dr. William Platt and Dr. Anthony Chila.

Lianne was a senior at Ohio University in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, majoring in online journalism. Her passions included theater, playing piano and entertaining others with her own music compositions on guitar. She was also an organ donor with Lifeline of Ohio.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Jagers & Sons Funeral Home in Athens, where the Vigil for the Deceased will be today at 9 p.m.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Athens at a later date.

There will also be visitation Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home in Hubbard, her place of birth.
