John “Jack” Selby Cooke, 76

“Together Again”

CANFIELD – There will be a funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for John “Jack” Selby Cooke, 76, who passed away Wednesday evening at the Hospice House.

John was born March 13, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of the late Gwynfryn Morgan and Ellen Elizabeth (Selby) Cooke.

John retired as a truck driver with Jones Transfer and had previously worked for Norwalk Truck Line.

He was a member of the Teamsters Local 377 and of the Protestant faith. John served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

His wife, Marion L., whom he married Oct. 5, 1976, passed away Aug. 26, 1997.

He is survived by a stepdaughter, Kathleen Bond of Norcross, Ga.; a sister, Iris Cargile of Tulsa, Okla.; two nephews, Ray (Belinda) Marshall and Cliff (Christina) Adcock of Denver; and his caretakers, Patricia and Chuck Cooper of Austintown.

John will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and neighbors. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice House, especially Linda, for their loving care.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Harold P. Davis Jr., 46

AUSTINTOWN – A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Austintown for Harold P. Davis Jr., 46, who passed away Friday morning in Hospice House.

Harold was born Jan. 18, 1962 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Harold P. Sr. and Joyce (Vaughn) Davis and came to the area at the age of five.

Harold was a graduate of Fitch High School class of 1980. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1980 until 1983. He was of Baptist faith and the owner of Glass Doctor in Austintown.

Besides his parents of Austintown, Harold leaves his wife, the former Jeanette E. Nicholson, whom he married June 7, 1985; one son, Ryan Davis of Austintown; two brothers, Mark Davis of Austintown, and John (Lisa) Davis of Girard; and one sister, Natalie (Tom) McCarthy of Hubbard.

Family and friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice House in Harold’s name.

Henry “Uncle Hank” DeToro, 85

YOUNGSTOWN – Henry “Uncle Hank” DeToro, 85, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008.

He was born March 15, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of the late Nicola DeToro and the late Adelina Cerimele DeToro.

Family includes nieces and nephews, with whom he lived with while they grew up, Lou and Connie DeToro, Jim and Sue DeToro and their children Mike (Cara) DeToro, Carla (Jason) Collins and Tom DeToro, Adele and Dave Mitchell and their children Scott (Camile) Mitchell, Amy Corbitt, and Kristen (Brian) Southard; nephews, Ralph (Terry) DeToro, Tony (Maxine) DeToro, Armand DeToro, Bill (Emily) DeToro, Nick DeToro, Bob (Monica) DeToro, Pat (Linda) DeToro and Armand (Ginny) DeToro; nieces, Mary Theresa (Steve) Sava, Maryanne DeToro and Marian (Dan) Shelton; sisters-in-law, Winnie DeToro and Ann DeToro; and numerous great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; dear friend and companion, Sandy Hercko; and brothers, Armand DeToro, Carmen DeToro, Louis DeToro and Ralph DeToro; and a sister, Jennie Fossaceca.

He was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Youngstown and was a graduate of East High School.

He worked for Republic Steel Truscon Division as a machinist for many years, was a WWII Army veteran and received the Purple Heart Award.

His love, was first and foremost his family and friends, was an avid New York Yankees fan and good meals with family and friends.

Calling hours will be at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 East Indianola Ave. in Youngstown, on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

His services will be at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2008.

His family would like to give their sincere thanks to the staff of Omni Manor Nursing Home and Hospice for the loving care that they gave him during the last month of his life.


Mary F. DiLorenzo, 93

VALENCIA, CALIF. – Mary F. DiLorenzo, 93, of 25815 McBean Parkway, formerly of Niles, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Sun Rise of Sterling Canyon Nursing Home.

She was born May 23, 1915 in Niles, the daughter of John and Philomena LaFeigo Bolino.

Mary was a 1935 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a seamstress for 25 years at Strouss Department Store and May Company, and a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, the Mt. Carmel Society, and the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild.

Her husband, Louis DiLorenzo, whom she married June 14, 1941, died Oct. 24, 2000.

She will be deeply missed by her two daughters, Nancy Horak and her husband, Stephen of Stevenson Ranch, Calif. and Gaylene May of Hamilton; her two sisters, Ann Musolf of Warren and Angelyn Scarmuzzi of Niles; and four grandchildren, Allison, Michael, and Matthew May, and Jennifer Lange and her husband, Cody.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Bolino and Anthony Bolino; and her sister, Rose Sprouse.

Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Society will conduct prayers at 4:45 p.m. and the Mt. Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, with Fr. Larry Frient officiating, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at the Niles City Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home Inc., in Niles.

Verna M. Douglas, 91

AUSTINTOWN – There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Verna M. Douglas, 91, formerly of Mineral Ridge, who passed away Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

She was born June 29, 1917 in Austintown, a daughter of the late Scott A. and Gertrude L. (Carns) Neff.

A homemaker, Verna was of the Protestant faith. She loved cooking and baking for and spending time with her family, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

Her first husband, Gordon M. Grimm, and second husband, Laurel H. Douglas, precede her in death.

Verna is survived by a daughter, Donna Sudimak of Austintown; one sister, Madeline Nicholson of Austintown; a brother, Wayne Neff of Austintown; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband and parents, Verna was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Grimm and Gordon W. Grimm; two sisters, Hazel Wilks and Bernice Portello; and three brothers, Herman, Arnold, and Willis Neff.

Michael C. “Fish Mike” McGarry, 54

KEY LARGO, FLA. – Private services were held for Michael C. “Fish Mike” McGarry, 54, who died at his residence Oct. 13, 2008, of natural causes.

Mike was the son of the late Robert L. and Delores M. McGarry. He was born in Warren on Jan. 7, 1954. He lived in Key Largo for the past 20 years.

Mike is survived by his mother, Dolores M. McGarry of Warren; daughter, Morgan McGarry and granddaughter, Rylee Reese of Canfield; brothers, Ron (Jennifer) of Concord, Calif. and Keith (Linda) of Youngstown; and many nieces and nephews.


Janice R. Sarver, 60

LAKE MILTON – Janice R. Sarver, 60, passed peacefully into eternal life at 4:48 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center due to complications from surgery.

On March 5, 1948, in Belington, W.Va., Walter V. and Glenna I. (Day) Taylor were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Janice.

Living most of her life in Lake Milton, she graduated from Jackson Milton High School in 1966.

Janice married the love of her life, Elwood P. Sarver, in June of 1978 and enjoyed 18 years of marriage together before he passed away on Jan. 13, 1996.

Memories of Janice will be carried on by her loving family, her mother, Glenna I. Kithcart; her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jeff Harman of Ravenna; her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Kim Evans of Atlanta; her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Charles Hamrick of Lake Milton; her brother, Michael Krueger of Lake Milton; and six grandchildren.

Janice was preceded in death by her father; her husband; and one brother, Vincent Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at the James Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Steven Spurlock officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Janice will be laid to rest at the Vaughn Cemetery in Lake Milton.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 6155 Rockside Road, Suite 202, Independence, OH 44131.
