Margaret Elizabeth Maggie Smith Alexander, 61
BRADENTON, FLA. Margaret Elizabeth Maggie Smith Alexander, 61, a former resident of Youngstown, passed away Feb. 28, 2009, at Tidewell Hospice and Palliative Care in Sarasota, Fla.
She was born on Dec. 29, 1947 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Cecil Roy and Margaret Elizabeth Smith.
Mrs. Alexander, Maggie, was employed by Sun Hydraulics in Sarasota. She was formerly employed by Dennys Restaurant in Liberty. She was a 1966 graduate of The Rayen School.
Maggie was a member of the VFW, the Moose Lodge, the DAV Club and the American Legion.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Alexander of Bradenton, formerly of Liberty; her son, Chris Peduzzi currently of Liberty; her husbands son, Richard of Bradenton; a sister, Diana Lynn (Gary Barnes) of Mineral Ridge; two brothers, Edward James of Mineral Ridge and Richard Joseph of Boardman; her two sisters-in-law, Francis Alexander and husband, Rick of Mineral Ridge and Kaye Quirk and husband, Bill of Columbiana; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Roy of Niles, William George of Las Vegas and Minor Thomas of Youngstown.
There are no calling hours or services in Youngstown.
In honor of Maggie, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Nick M. Amendola, 72
STRUTHERS Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church, both in Struthers for Nick M. Amendola, 72, who passed away on his birthday, March 4, at the Hospice House.
Nick was born in Struthers March 4, 1937, a son of Larry and Mary Retort Amendola, and remained a lifelong resident.
He was a meat manager at various grocery stores in the area for 28 years and later was a sales representative at Stadium Lincoln Mercury.
Nick was a member of the Youngstown Mens Bowling Association, serving as its director for 10 years. He was an avid bowler since the age of 13 and achieved a perfect 300 game and an 800 set during his career. Nick also loved spending as much time as he could on area golf courses. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church in Struthers and the Struthers Knights of Columbus No. 4224, whose members will attend.
Nick also had a passion for dance. It was through his dancing that he met his wife, JoAnn (Subotic) 50 years ago at Avon Oaks. They were married Nov. 3, 1956. JoAnn preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 2007.
Nick leaves his son, Nick (Michelle) Amendola of Lowellville; a daughter, Deborah Stricklin and her fiancé Ken Walcott of Boardman; a brother, Larry (Debbie) Amendola of Boardman; a sister, Angie (Pat) Fecko of New Middletown; two granddaughters, Rachel Stricklin and Gia Amendola; and one grandson, Mauro Amendola.

YOUNGSTOWN There will be funeral services at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 6, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman for Ismael Basora, 88, who passed away Tuesday, March 3.
Ismael was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, the son of Juan and Leonor (Martiz) Basora.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Ismael retired from the Youngstown Public Library after 20 years. He enjoyed watching and playing baseball and was an avid New York Yankees fan.
Ismael will always be remembered by his wife, the former Hortensia Silva Ramos, whom he married July 1, 1944; his three sons, Danny (Sandy) Basora, Jose (Rita) Basora, and Gilberto Basora; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three brothers.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

MINERAL RIDGE Helen P. Bundy, 85, formerly of Girard, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Briarfield at the Ridge.
Helen was born June 3, 1923, to the late William and Anna Wannat Porchnavi in Cuddy, Pa.
She worked 30 years as an secretary assistant manager for the Mahoning Country Club.
She is survived by her daughters, Judith Ann Jones of Lake Milton and Deborah E. (Thomas Sr.) Koniowsky of McDonald; three grandchildren, Melissa Hall, TJ Koniowsky Jr. and James Jones; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Madison and Evan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford H. Bundy, whom she married Sept. 18, 1943, and died Dec. 13, 1970; a sister, Mary Schonhut; a brother, Andrew Bundy; and a great-grandson, Cole.
There will be a private service on Friday at Blackstone Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Girard City Cemetery
Ronald D. Christoff, 70
YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home. Services will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Casimirs Church for Ronald D. Christoff, 70, who entered into rest early Wednesday morning.
Ronald was born June 10,1938 in Youngstown, the son of Felix W. and Virginia H. (Opincarne) Christoff.
He was a Old North High School graduate. He was a director of maintenance for Miller Transfer in Edinburgh. Ronald also served in the U.S. Navy. Ronald enjoyed the outdoors, target shooting and NASCAR racing. He was a member of St. Casimirs Church.
He leaves his loving wife, Joan E. (Baldwin) Christoff of Youngstown, whom he married Sept. 16, 1962; three sons, Ronald Christoff Jr. of Youngstown, Robert (Pam) Christoff of Savannah, Ga. and Richard M. Christoff of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Lisa Christoff (Jessie Pal) of Youngstown and Lora A. of Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Raymond Christoff of Youngstown; seven grandchildren, Amanda Dabuzzi, Ashley Bruss, Thomas Pulice, Anthony Christoff, Felix Christoff, Aaron Christoff and Austin Christoff; and one great-grandson, Donovan.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia.

Irene F. Collins, 75
GIRARD Irene F. Collins, 75, died Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Cleveland Clinic.
She was born on Aug. 6, 1933, in Boone County, W.Va., the daughter of the late McKinley and Letille (Miller) Lovejoy.
She and her husband owned Als Lawn Mower Shop, where she was a good mechanic. She enjoyed bingo and was an active member of the Hope Baptist Church in Girard.
She married the late Albert Collins on Oct. 21, 1949, and he passed away Oct. 30, 1999.
She is survived by a son, Charles (Etta) Collins of Niles; three daughters, Caroline (James) Vint of Niles, Kathy (Jeff) Hillyer of Girard and Diane (Patrick) OConnell of Girard; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Eliga Stone, Ernest Stone and Lee Lovejoy; and three sisters, Florence Scott, Alma Gillispie and Sylvia Flury.
There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard, with calling hours from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
Interment will be at Churchill Cemetery in Liberty Township.

Rev. Arthur Emerson Conner, 82
MITCHELL, S.D. Arthur Emerson Conner, 82, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at his home while in hospice care.
He was born Feb. 23, 1927 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Glenn and Tillie (Nord) Conner.
He married Dorothy Helen Buehler on June 4, 1957 in Emery, S.D.
Art, known by many as Sandy, served in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany after World War II. He worked in industry in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio, prior to moving to Dubuque, Iowa, where he attended the University of Dubuque and graduated in 1958 from Dubuque Theological Seminary. Later that year, he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister by Shenango Presbytery at the Presbyterian Church in Bessemer, Pa., where he grew up. He served churches in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota.
In 1968 and 1969, the family lived in Seoul, South Korea, where Art worked with the Christian Childrens Fund. In 1986, he became a certified chemical dependency counselor, working at the Keystone Treatment Center in Canton, S.D. and the Serenity Lane Hospital in Eugene, Ore.
Art is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Susan (John) Enwright of New Ulm, Minn. and Elizabeth Conner (Van Smith) of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Jon (Amy) Conner of Mankato, Minn.; three granddaughters, Stephanie and Rachel Enwright and Bailey Smith; and one brother, Harry (Bettyanne) Conner of Bessemer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jack Conner.
A memorial service will be held at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church in Emery on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. Interment with the immediate family will precede the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the John and Helen Buehler Memorial Endowed Fund at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary and the Avera Hospice in Mitchell.

YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Mrs. Rachael Virginia Epps, 81, who departed this life Saturday at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mrs. Epps was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Boiling Springs, S.C., a daughter of Samuel and Janie E. Strobel McIntyre.
She was a teacher in the Greenville County School system until her retirement. She was the mother and member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and missionary society. She was a graduate of Hampton University, majoring in business and education.
Her husband, Sam C. Epps, whom she married June 14, 1950, died Jan. 12, 1975.
She leaves seven sons, Ollie, Thomas (Peggy), James and Dale (Michelle) Epps and Ronnie Codett, all of Greenville, Bobby Epps of Lexington, N.C. and Sam (Felicia) Epps of Rochester, Pa.; three daughters, Veleria (Johnny) Greer of Greenville, Judith (David) Davis and Mildred Epps, both of Youngstown; two sisters, Martha McIntyre Nesbitts of Greer, S.C. and Catherine Logan of Spartensburg, S.C.; a brother, J.B. McIntyre of Washington, D.C.; 24 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents; a son, Lee S. Epps; a sister, Laura M. Byrd; and a brother, Andre McIntyre preceded her in death.
Viewing will be Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Katherine was born March 11, 1924, in Struthers, the daughter of the late John and Catherine Almasy Spirko.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and had worked as a baker for Crystal Pastry Shop.
She is survived by a brother, Walter Spirko of Struthers; a sister-in-law, Ann Spirko of Struthers; a niece, Donna (Keith) Howell of Salem; a nephew, John Spirko of Struthers; her stepchildren, Frank (Gwenn) Fabian, Kathy (John) DOnofrio and Barbara Benson; five stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Fabian, whom she married Jan. 27, 1971, and he died April 10,1989 and two brothers, Michael and John Spirko.

Mr. Frichtel was born Jan. 14, 1936 in Farrell, Pa., a son of Lawrence E. and Tressa Spirk Frichtel.
Robert was a 1954 graduate of South High School and graduated from Youngstown College in 1966. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1957 to 1959.
He worked at A&P Grocery Chain, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Van-Huffel Steel and Newport Ship Builders. He was an active member at St. Charles Church and their Mens Club, an Usher and Lector, the Cursio and he was involved in the Prison Ministries. He enjoyed golfing, travel and spending time with family and friends.
He will be missed by a brother, Lawrence (Rosemary) Frichtel of Poland; three sisters, Lillian (Al) Pishioneri of Freehold, N.J., Dolores (Bill) Kotheimer of Georgia and Tressa (Don) Best of Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William and James Frichtel.

POLAND Private services were held Wednesday at Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for Helen J. Gray, 87, who passed away Sunday morning at Hospice House.
Helen was born Aug. 9, 1921 in Berwyn, Ill., a daughter of Adam and Theresa Hruska Spartz.
She worked as a riveter inspector during WWII and she worked at South Side Hospital as a linen attendant and retired after 23 years. She was also a member of SEIU 1199 Retirees Club.
Helen leaves behind a daughter, Christine (Norman) Webber of Youngstown; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Johnson of Butler, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Norm Webber Jr, Brian Webber and Kim Smith.

Ray C. Grossen, 89
COLUMBIANA Ray C. Grossen, 89, of Whispering Pines Village, formerly of New Springfield, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, surrounded by the love of his family.
Ray was born Sept. 1, 1919, in New Springfield, a son of the late Frederick C. and Linice Hofmeister Grossen.
He served in the U.S. Army, 37th Division during World War II in the South Pacific.
He had worked more than 40 years as an electrician, first at General Fireproofing in Youngstown, then later at Ajax Magnathermic in Youngstown and Warren and NRM in Columbiana. He retired from W.K. Stamets Company in Columbiana in 1981.
He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Springfield, Allen Lodge No. 276 F. & A.M., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Youngstown and the Youngstown Shrine Club. He had served on the New Springfield Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Springfield Township Historical Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of New Springfield.
He was an avid antique car collector, and was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America, the Tri State Antique Auto Club, the Willys, Overland, Knight Registry, and the Tri County 4 Wheelers Club. He, along with his beloved wife, traveled on many Glidden and Founders Tours over the years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Bertha Lute Martin Grossen; a daughter, Janene Rae Grossen; a sister, Gladys Marquis; three brothers, Glenn, Dale and Ralph Grossen; and a granddaughter, Janene Rae Grossen.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doris M. Riesen, whom he married June 4, 1946; a daughter, Leni (Dick) Cornell of New Springfield; a son, John (Bobbi) Grossen of Magnolia; a sister, Cordetta (Joe) Valthauser of North Royalton; and three grandchildren, Aaron (Noel Lavezzi) Cornell of Cleveland, Jeremy (Stacy) Cornell of Brandon, Fla. and John Jay (Liz Humphreys) Grossen of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kari Lankford and Minister Aimee Raymond officiating.
Burial will be at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
Friends may call at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday where Allen Lodge will conduct Masonic services at 1:30 p.m.

Peg was born Jan 6, 1921 in Youngstown, a daughter of Matthew and Ann Michalov Matis.
She was a member of the first graduating class of Woodrow Wilson in 1939. Before she was married, she worked at the YMCA in New York City and the Youngstown Letter shop in Youngstown. She was a member of the church and the Slovak Catholic Union. She enjoyed her children.
Her husband, Albert B. McKinney, whom she married May 27, 1948, died Sept. 4, 1982.
Peg leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Barbara (Aran) Kongmuang of Canfield and Patricia (Bob) Brace of Austintown; three sons, Charles (Debbie) McKinney of California, John (Mary) McKinney of Stow and Robert (Darlene) McKinney of Boardman; a sister, Mary Ann (Joseph) Pavalko of Boardman; eight grandchildren, Denny, David and Kayla Brace, Steven and Karen Kongmuang and Galen, Matthew and Katelyn McKinney; and a great-granddaughter, Caitlin Justine.

CANAL FULTON Virginia (Faloba) Miller passed away on Feb. 22, 2009, at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton.
She was born Dec. 21, 1937 and lived most of her life in Warren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, in 1996.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a daughter, Diane (Eddie) Kee of Canton; son, Matt (Mary) Miller of Arlington Heights, Ill.; beloved grandchildren, Noah, Katie, Teddy and Lily; sisters, Kathryn Korpi and Debby Faloba; and brother, John Faloba.
Private burial will be at Howland Township Cemetery.

Mrs. Savko was born April 20, 1932 in Youngstown, a daughter of Carl and Concetta Mallamace Rinaldo.
Jean was a 1950 graduate of East High School. She retired from Bank One, where she worked as a teller. She was a member of Saint Joseph Church. Jean loved to travel to Atlantic City, California and Florida.
Her first husband, John E. May, whom she married May 21, 1955, died March 28, 1957. Her second husband, James Savko, whom she married April 20, 1963, died Dec. 5, 2002.
She leaves three daughters, Margaret (Ken) Jones of Boardman, Lynn Kana, with whom she made her home and Cheryl Gross of Cleveland; one son, J. Pat May of Girard; two brothers, Fabian P. Rinaldo and Michael Rinaldo, both of Boardman; 11 grandchildren, James May, Danielle Pauckner, J. Patrick May, Amanda Kana, Jerome Kana, Adrienna Kana, Kimberly Kana, Kenneth Jones Jr., Megan Jones, Anna Christine Gross and Andrea Gross; seven great-grandchildren, Jayden Stiles, Zachary Paukner, Zoe Paukner, Zaiden Paukner, Gianna May, James May Jr. and Laci May; and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was born March 1, 2009, in Akron, to Bryan Daly and Wendy Wrey (Fink) Smith.

HUBBARD Lois E. Stitt, 72, died Tuesday evening, March 3, 2009, at OBrien Memorial Nursing Home after a year long battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 13, 1937 in Brookfield, a daughter of Glade and Mae D. Hamlin Clark and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Stitt, a homemaker, was a member of the Hubbard Church of the Nazarene, where she served as a part time secretary. She was a 1955 graduate of Brookfield High School. She worked for the Board of Elections for 27 years as a poll worker and enjoyed reading.
She leaves her husband, Harry T. Stitt, whom she married May 11, 1957; a son, Harry T. Stitt Jr. of Hubbard; and two sisters, Ruth Wray of Hubbard and Marge Rodgers of Fredonia, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Keith Stitt.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home.

Paul T. Vasko, 80
AUSTINTOWN Paul T. Vasko, 80, passed away suddenly early Monday morning, March 2, 2009, after suffering an apparent heart attack.
Paul was born June 10, 1928 in Youngstown, a son of the late Julius M. and Lillian Zadonia Vasko.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, retiring in 1968 from the service as a Tech Sergeant (E-6).
Paul subsequently worked for 14 years for Pan American World Airways as an airplane mechanic in Winter Haven, Fla., retiring from there in 1982. He returned to the Youngstown area in 1986.
Mr. Vasko had been a member of the Youngstown Rifle and Pistol Club since 1980 and was a member of the 20/.09 Amateur Radio Club.
Paul leaves two sisters, Mary Pittock and Martha Laurie, both of Austintown; two nephews, David (Marie) Laurie and Mark (Mandy) Laurie, both also of Austintown; a great-niece, Amanda Laurie; and his longtime companion, Helen Andre of Salem.
Paul will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home and continue at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Norquest Boulevard.
Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.

George William Warner Jr., 79
YOUNGSTOWN George William Warner Jr., 79, passed away at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Tuesday, March 3, 2009.
Mr. Warner was born July 21, 1929 in Lebanon, Ky., a son of George and Grace Alice Thompson Warner Sr.
He was a self-employed horse trainer, a member of the Black Horseman Association and he served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
Mr. Warner leaves to mourn his loss four sons, Johnny Warner and George Warner III, both of Kentucky, Rick (Roxanne) Reed of Pennsylvania and Gordon Reed of Michigan; five daughters, Elizabeth (Clarence) Lewis of Kentucky, Yvette (Hiran) Woodberry of Youngstown, Linda (George P.) Vactor of Erie, Pa., Leslie Warner of Pennsylvania and Emily Warner of Boardman; two brothers, Gayle (Belinda) and Michael Warner, both of Pennsylvania; nine sisters, Margaret Prater of Youngstown, Florence (Earl Sr.) Walker, Carolann (Charles Sr,) Walker and Roberta (Myron) Gabriel, all of Cleveland, Georgeann Walker of New Jersey, Stephanie Anderson of Washington, D.C., Shawn Anderson of Pennsylvania, Barbara (Jerome) Odom of South Carolina and Glenda Hughes of Erie, Pa; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Howard-Rhoden Funeral Home.

David Zatvarnicky Sr., 55
NILES David Zatvarnicky Sr., 55, of 50 Washington Ave., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at his residence.
He was born June 2 1953, in Youngstown, the son of Peter and Minnie DiMuzio Zatvarnicky.
David was a 1972 graduate of Girard High School, employed for 10 years at U.S. Steel McDonald Works, and Packard Electric for 23 years before retiring in 1998.
He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, loved animals, attending car shows, and an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.
He will be deeply missed by his parents of Girard; his wife, Jeanette Helmheckel Zatvarnicky, whom he married Nov. 19, 1985; a son, David Zatvarnicky Jr. and his wife, Amy of Girard; a stepson Stephan Krenciprock of Niles, a stepdaughter, Natalie Krenciprock of Mineral Ridge; a brother, Peter Zatvarnicky Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Youngstown; two sisters, Lynn Brown and her husband, Richard of McDonald, Lila Miller and her husband, Jim of Berlin Center; and three grandchildren, especially Hayley Krenciprock who resided with him.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles with Fr. Larry Frient officiating.
Burial will be at Pineview Cemetery.
