Patricia “Patti” Appleman, 59

AUSTINTOWN – Patricia Appleman, 59, passed away late Saturday morning, April 4, 2009, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Patricia, who was affectionately known as “Patti,” was born March 21, 1950, in Youngstown, a daughter of the Michael J. and Anne M. Balish Kekish, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1968 graduate of Austintown Fitch School, and was a 1971 graduate of the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and a Registered Nurse, CNOR at Forum Health Northside Medical Center for 36 years, retiring as a surgical nurse in 2007.

Patti was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church.

She enjoyed ballroom dancing, walking in the park, gardening, flowers, and enjoyed spending time with her friends. Patti was a fun-loving person who loved people and always looked for the good in everyone, accepting people for who they are. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Patti leaves her son, Mark Appleman of Boardman; her mother, Anne M. Kekish of Austintown; her loving companion, Leonard Lucas of Warren; and her former husband, Robert Appleman of Boardman.

Her father, Michael J. Kekish is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 6, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a prayer service will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services will begin on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.

Betty J. Brown, 75

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mrs. Betty J. Brown, 75, who departed this life Friday, March 27, 2009, at Renaissance Medical Nursing Home.

Betty was born May 6, 1933, in Dublin, Ga., a daughter of Roberta Reed and Johnny Turner.

Betty accepted Christ at a young age. She was a faithful member of Faith Temple Baptist Church, where she served as church mother, a deaconess, and a former church nurse. She received a certificate for being the “World’s Most Understanding Mom.”

Betty was a loving, caring, beautiful person. She loved her family, and most of all, she loved helping people. She also enjoyed cooking, shopping and rejoicing in the Lord.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her eight children, Betty J. Pierce and Tommy L. Brown and James Brown, all of Youngstown, Louise (Mitchell) Simpson of Douglas, Ga., Geneva Brown and William Brown, both of Minneapolis, Minn., Lisa Brown of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Theresa D. Brown of Eden Prairie; two sisters, Roberta Williams of Alma, Ga., and Arthur Lee Williams of Plantation, Fla.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William, who passed away in 1995; her son, Steve Brown; her daughter, Mary Ann Bankhead; three sisters, Bertha Lee, Daisy and Retha May; and a brother, Frank Reynolds.

Isaiah Edward Bryant

AUSTINTOWN – Private funeral services for family and close friends will be held Monday at the Wickliffe Presbyterian Church for Isaiah Edward Bryant, born silently Friday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Isaiah is survived by his parents, Jim and Lisa Bryant of Liberty; sisters, Kelsey and Jacelyn; brothers, Michael and Jacob, all at home; grandparents, Joyce Dempsey, Jack and LaDonna Lunn, Marlene Bryant, Ed and Remy Bryant; great-grandparents, Kenneth and Beverly Lunn; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Jackie Lunn and great-grandparents, James and Katherine O’Hara and Robert and Janet Adams.

Andrew “Junior” Buonavolonta, 51

GIRARD – Andrew “Junior” Buonavolonta, 51, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at his home.

He was born Nov. 4, 1957, in Youngstown, the son of the late Andrew and Evelyn (Venzeio) Buonavolonta.

He worked for 12 years with the Girard Street Department, retiring in 1996. He was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Margiotta) Buonavolonta, whom he married July 20, 1984; a son, Andrew J. Buonavolonta of Girard; a daughter, Annamarie Buonavolonta of Girard; two brothers, Frank Buonavolonta of Girard and Vito (Gina) Buonavolonta of Canfield; and two sisters, JoAnn (Thomas) Trucksis of Girard and Florence (Chuck) Doran of Girard.

Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home, Girard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Rose Church with prayers at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery in Liberty.


Robert Henry Crosby

NEWTON FALLS – With his wife and daughter at his bedside, Robert Henry Crosby passed into eternal life on Friday, April 3, 2009, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls.

Robert was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Pittsburgh, the son of William S. and Elsie B. Carr Crosby. While still a child, the family relocated to Ohio.

In 1936, Robert graduated from North Lima High School and then attended The Ohio State University in Columbus where his course of study was chemical engineering. He obtained employment as a metallurgist at Republic Steel Corp. in Youngstown.

On July 29, 1942, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force. While serving during World War II, he obtained the rank of sergeant in his duties as a crew chief. Robert was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1945.

Prior to his enlistment, friends had arranged for Robert to meet a mutual friend for pie and coffee. The two of them became great friends. While awaiting deployment in Newark, N.J., Robert H. Crosby and Shirley H. Dahman were united in marriage at St. Patrick Cathedral on Dec. 15, 1942. Returning to civilian life, Robert and Shirley came to Hubbard and eventually resided in New Middletown.

Robert was employed by Compco Metal Products in Youngstown. He retired after 30 years of service from his duties in inventory control and as a draftsman.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls. Robert was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in New Middletown.

Robert enjoyed antique cars and was a member of the Sebring Antique Car Club. He participated in parades with his Model B Ford. Robert also was an enthusiastic and accomplished roller skater.

Memories of Robert will be carried on by his family; his loving wife, Shirley; his caring daughter and son-in-law, Judith A. and Dannie Armstrong of Newton Township; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Molly Crosby of Newton Falls; his grandchildren, Douglas (Marie) Crosby, Reid (Beth) Crosby and Holly (Greg) Reinke; his great-grandchildren, Cole, Caleb, Ashley, Lamb, Ethan, Jesse, Rachel and Jacob; and his sister, Mildred Welsh of North Lima.

Robert was preceded in death by his brother, William J. Crosby, and his sisters, Naomi Herrick and Mary Moyer.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 6, 2009 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with the Reverend Matthew Mankowski as celebrant.

The Newton Falls Veteran’s Organization Honor Guard will honor Robert with a military service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, were he will be laid to rest.

The family request that material tributes be made in memory of Robert to the Alzheimer Association, 3695 Boardman Canfield Road, Canfield, OH 44406.

Marian A. Dickey, 85

BOARDMAN – Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel for Marian A. Dickey, 85, who passed away Friday afternoon at Greenbriar.

Marian was born Jan. 26, 1924, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of Phil and Harriet (Mushrush) Zellner.

Marian was a 1942 graduate of South High School. She was a secretary for five years at Cold Metal Products. She was a member of the Christ Church Presbyterian and their couples bowling league. Marian enjoyed bowling and was a member and secretary for several bowling leagues. She loved helping out with youth bowling. She also enjoyed camping, knitting and reading.

Her greatest love was spending time with her family.

Marian leaves her husband of 60 years, George A. Dickey, whom she married May 21, 1948; her daughter, Patti (Gary) Greene of Boardman; her son, Phil (Lynn) Dickey of New Springfield; her grandson, Christopher Dickey; her granddaughter, Nina (Tom) Steele; and her great-grandchildren.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Karl Zellner.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests material tributes take the form of donations to the Christ Church Presbyterian in her name.

Laura R. Fiorentine

STRUTHERS – Services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Clemente Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, both in Struthers, for Laura R. Fiorentine, who passed away Friday, April 3 at her home.

Laura was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Pacentro, Italy, a daughter of Carlo and Antoinette Pompeii DeChellis.

She married Michael A. Fiorentine Sept. 25, 1943.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Church and its Altar and Rosary Guild and was also a member of the Lowellville Senior Citizens and St. Anthony’s Ladies Auxiliary.

Laura leaves behind her son, Michael J. (Arlene) Fiorentine, and her daughter, Rose Fiorentine, both of Struthers; a brother, Albert (Angie) DeChellis of Struthers; two sisters, Florina (John) Creaturo of Struthers and Mary DeFrances of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Thomas (Tammy) Kopnicky of Lowellville, Michael Fiorentine of Struthers, Tami (David) Slaina of Struthers, Lisa (Geoff) Malcomson of Struthers, and Nicole (Ryan) Hively of Canfield; and 11 great-grandchildren, Kristen, Thomas, Andrew Kopnicky, Tristyn, Sabina, and Sophie Fiorentine, Marissa and Isabella Slaina, Maria Malcomson and Ryan and Adam Hively.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, who died Feb. 27, 2000; three brothers, James, Louis and infant brother Albert DeChellis; and two sisters, Amelia Giancola and Elizabeth Bell.

Harry E. Fisher, 87

NEW CASTLE, PA. – Harry E. Fisher, 87, died March 28, 2009.

Mr. Fisher was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, which included serving 30 months overseas with the 614th Ordinance Ammunition Company in the New Hebrides, Solomon, and Philippine islands.

Harry was a retired employee of Commercial Shearing & Stamping in Youngstown, where he worked for more than 25 years.

He is survived by his siblings, Agnes (Rosemary) DeRosa, Elsie Leslie, Doris Denning and Edward Fisher, as well as the many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews and their children.

Having never married and with no children, Harry spent much of his time with Rosemary’s family including his brother-in-law, David DeRosa; his nephews, David and Jerry, and their respective wives, Susan and Leslie; his great-niece and nephews, Marisa, David, Dustin and Gino; and his lifelong companion, the late Ann Wilkovich.

No service is scheduled at this time, as it was Harry’s wish to have his body donated to science.

Donna J. Gayan, 67

YOUNGSTOWN – Donna J. Gayan, 67, of the city’s west side, passed away late Friday morning, April 3, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she had been a patient for two weeks.

Donna was born Jan. 5, 1942, in Vienna, a daughter of the late John and Hazel Garrard Philips, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1961 graduate of Chaney High School, was a homemaker and worked at Youngstown West Elementary School for 22 years, retiring in the late 1990s.

Donna was a member of the Girard United Methodist Church.

She was an avid fan of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the Cleveland Indians and enjoyed watching her daughters play softball while they were growing up. Mrs. Gayan enjoyed shopping, doing word search puzzles, and most of all, enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Donna leaves her husband of 45 years, Edward Gayan, whom she married Aug. 23, 1963; three daughters, Lora Gayan of Youngstown, Lisa (Bill) Vallas of Austintown, and Leslie (Bob) Prosser of Youngstown; three grandsons, Corey Vallas, Jared Vallas, and Mason Prosser; two sisters, Judy (Ken) Chapman of Niles and Sandy (Robert) Fuzy; and a brother, Jack (Barbara) Philips of Orange County, Calif.

Donna will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Blanche E. Hogg, 90

HERMITAGE, PA. – Blanche E. Hogg, 90, formerly of Brookfield and Vienna, passed away peacefully at 12:40 a.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at Nugent Convalescent Home in Hermitage, where she was a resident for the past three months.

Mrs. Hogg was born March 1, 1919, in East Palestine, a daughter of the late Chester and Maude Pierce Elliott.

She was a 1939 graduate of Bessemer High School and moved to the area following her marriage. Mrs. Hogg was employed at the former Noble’s Shoe Store in downtown Sharon, Pa., and later in the Hickory Plaza, for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Brookfield United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hogg served as a poll worker on election day in Brookfield for many years and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.

Her husband, J. William “Bill” Hogg, whom she married Oct. 18, 1940, passed away Nov. 5, 1988.

A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by a daughter, Betty Chess, and her husband, Frank, of Hermitage; a son, Jesse W. Hogg Jr., and his wife, Rose Ann, of Hermitage; six grandchildren, Amy Krysiek, Frank Chess, Ed Chess, Laura Casey, Billy Hogg and Jesse Hogg III; eight great-grandchildren, Lauran, William, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Matthew, Emily, Megan and Lisa; a sister, Lieutenant Col. Rosemary Richardson of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Blanche was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Elliott; and four sisters, Byrl Henry, Fyrn Heasley, Helen McCormick and Ada Pifer.

Richard “Rick” Allen Johnson, 50

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the One Hundred Twenty Church of God In Christ for Minister Richard “Rick” Allen Johnson, 50, who departed this life Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Minister Johnson was born Feb. 7, 1959, in New Castle, Pa., a son of Frank and Willie Weeks Johnson.

He was a 1979 graduate of East High School and attended Kent State University. Richard had worked in various locations as a security officer. He was a member and associate minister of the One Hundred Twenty C.O.G.I.C., and served as church van driver, a youth leader and conducted Friday evening worship services. He was a member of the NAACP. He enjoyed fishing, playing basketball, football and baseball.

His wife, the former Tammy Armour, whom he married June 14, 1980, passed away Nov. 20, 2003.

He leaves to cherish his memory, two sisters, Beverly (Rev. David) Richey of Troy and Robin Johnson of Youngstown; three brothers, Willis (Orenda) Johnson of Boardman, Rodger (Myrinda) Johnson of Campbell and Dennis (Janise) Johnson of Youngstown; a godson, David L. Richey of Troy; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Raamon Johnson; grandparents William and Arvella Weeks and Vohu and Carrie Johnson; and a dear friend, Louella Dendy.

Bernard Jones, 55

LOWELLVILLE – Mr. Bernard Jones, 55, was called home to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Bernard was born April 4, 1953, in Chicago, the son of Rufus and Josephine Walls Jones.

A 1972 graduate of East High School, he was a bus driver for WRTA for 18 years, where he served as vice president of Amalgamated Teamsters Union Local 272. He also worked for Commercial Shearing for 11 years.

Bernard loved fishing, gardening and working on small engines. He loved playing cards and was a member of The Lexington Bridge Club.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 36 years, the former Marilyn Barron; three sons, Marcus Jones at home, Bernard (Danielle) Jones Jr. and Terrance (De’von) Jones, all of Youngstown; five sisters, Delores Jones of Stowe, Debra Lee Jones, Gloria Jean Jones, Rosemary Jones and Rebecca Jones, all of Youngstown; a brother, Bryant Lee Jones of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Marcus and Tiasia Slade, Terrance Jr., Jordan De’vine Jones and Terrell Jones, all of Youngstown; two goddaughters, Mya and Audya Williams of Youngstown; and a host of family and friends. He also leaves his dog, Pede.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rufus Jones Jr.

Lester Lewis, 85

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Lester Lewis, 85, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Liberty Health Care.

Lester was born in Wooster on Feb. 13, 1924, the son of the late Edward and Adelaide (Zarlengo) Lewis.

He was an insurance agent for American General Insurance for 32 years, retiring in 2003.

He was a member of St. Edward’s Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Lester is survived by his wife, Vivian Aaron Lewis, whom he married Feb. 20, 1953; his children, Ronald Lewis of Austintown, Debbie Scott, Gary (Karen) Lewis of Cincinnati, Janice (Todd) Newell of Connecticut, and Pamela Lewis of Liberty Township; six grandchildren; his sisters, Phyllis Spagnola and Shirley Lewis, both of Poland, and Vince Rohan of Youngstown; and his brothers, Edward Lewis of Campbell and Ben Lewis of Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Evans, and his brother, Harry Lewis.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Edward’s Church.

Interment will follow at Churchill Cemetery.

Catherine Z. McGinnis, 91

MINERVA – Catherine Z. McGinnis, 91, left this world April 3, 2009, to join her beloved husband, Samuel, along with many of her brothers and sisters in heaven after battling Alzheimer’s with aspirations.

Catherine was born July 4, 1917, in the Monaca, Pa., area to George and Anna Winkle. Catherine had nine brothers and sisters.

Catherine was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of 15.

She was a loyal member of the Youngstown Chapter of the Sweet Adeline’s for 35 years. Catherine lived very modestly and quietly but was always there to help those whom she loved.

Catherine spent much of her life in the Mahoning County area with wonderful friends and family. Her son, Samuel, and his wife, Billie, still reside in North Lima. She spent her final years in Minerva with her daughter, Dolly, and son-in-law, Sam, by her side. Her final months were also shared with the wonderful staff of Great Trail Nursing Home and Hospice of Carroll and Tuscarawas County.

It was her wish to have her final services at Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima and then be laid to rest with her husband, Samuel, in Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.

The family would also like to thank Pastor Ralph and his entire congregation of the Good Hope Lutheran Church of North Lima who is opening their church to them.

All of her surviving family and friends are taking comfort that neither her life nor her death were in vain.

We would rather to take ease with a verse from the bible:

St. Luke 7:22, “Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised.”

Grandma you are in heaven now, go with Grandpa without any pain and dance, and laugh with pleasure. We will think of you daily and sing your praises often. We were very lucky to have you for 91 years; your wisdom will live forever handed down to generations.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima with Pastor Ralph Edwards officiating.

Friends may call today, April 5, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima.

Burial will be in Lake Park Cemetery.

Mary Ann McHattie, 58

POLAND – Mary Ann McHattie, 58, passed away Wednesday, April, 1, 2009, at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

She was born July 2, 1950, in Youngstown, the daughter of Daniel Grieco Sr. and Elsie (Robinson) Grieco.

She was the loving wife of Dave McHattie for 40 years.

Her family includes, her husband, Dave McHattie of Poland; her parents, Daniel Sr. and Elsie Grieco of Boardman; her sons, Brian McHattie of Poland and Shaun McHattie of Austintown; her brothers, Daniel Grieco Jr. of Pittsburgh and Tony Grieco of Austintown; and a granddaughter, Jessica McBride.

She was a graduate of Boardman High School. She worked as a secretary for Utsinger Towing. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed going with her mother.

Private services were held at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 E. Indianola Ave. in Youngstown.


Helen Marie McMahon, 88

NILES – Helen Marie McMahon, 88, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 12:45 a.m., surrounded by her loving children.

Helen was born in Warren Sept. 16, 1920, to Thomas and Mary (Benedict) O’Brien, and throughout her life, she was extremely proud of her family’s Irish Heritage.

A 1938 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, she retired after working 25-plus years as the assistant credit manager at Carlisle’s Department Store.

Helen was a member of St. Stephen Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She volunteered for many years in the offices at St. James and St. Stephen elementary schools. She enjoyed watching Notre Dame football games, sewing, reading, cross stitching, doing crossword puzzles and traveling.

She is survived by her three children, Kathleen (George) Mocker of Warren, Michael (Mary Ann) McMahon of Niles, and Patricia McMahon of Niles; five grandchildren, Michael McMahon, Timothy McMahon, Gregory Mocker, Douglas Mocker and Laura Mocker; a great-grandson, Shawn McMahon; two sisters, Margaret (Alex) Kostyshak of Struthers and Theresa Koblenzer of Wadsworth; her brother, William O’Brien of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Elsie O’Brien of Niles; and her beloved dog, Casey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael George McMahon, whom she married Nov. 11, 1941, and who passed away Dec. 5, 1991; a sister, Katherine O’Brien; a brother, Thomas O’Brien; a brother-in-law, Dale Koblenzer; and a sister-in-law, Kay O’Brien.

Calling hours will be today, Sunday, April 5, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 6, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Church with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski as celebrant.

Burial will be at St Stephen Cemetery with a bagpiper playing tribute to her Irish Heritage.

Ruth M. Purnell, 87

CANFIELD – Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Smith Corners United Methodist Church for Ruth M. Purnell, 87, who died Thursday at her residence.

Ruth was born July 9, 1921, in Austintown, the daughter of Perry and Goldie (Lawrence) Kimmel, and was a lifelong area resident.

Ruth was a life member of the Smith Corners United Methodist Church, where she had formerly served as children’s director and a member of the co-workers group of the church. She had formerly been a 4-H advisor for the Austintown Stitch “n” Chat Club for over 20 years. Ruth loved to crochet for her family, garden and sew. She graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1939. Ruth had worked for Dr. Maria Fok as a housekeeper for many years.

Ruth will be sadly missed by her children, Ruth Ann (David) Kapus of Canfield, Mary Ann (Ken) Reel of Austintown and Patricia (Bill) Clark and Walter “Bud” (Joan) Purnell, both of North Jackson. She is also survived by sisters Mary Penny of Austintown and Virginia DeWalk of Hubbard; grandchildren Matthew Reel, Amy Nash, Carolyn Deer, Stephen Kapus, Joseph Clark, Elizabeth Clark, Benjamin Clark, Christine Purnell and Amanda Purnell; and great-grandchildren Alexis and Jacob.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Purnell, whom she married May 8, 1942, and who died in 1972. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Roy, Perry, Mike and Jim Kimmel. and sister Marion Moser.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church, prior to services.

Pauline L. Rouan, 82

YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will be Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Msgr. Robert Siffrin at 1 p.m. at St. Edward Church in Youngstown for Pauline L. Rouan, 82, who passed away Thursday evening at her home.

Pauline was born July 19, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Erisky.

She was a graduate of South High School. She was a homemaker and worked for the Wick Building downtown, retiring in 1993. Pauline was a member of the church and was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and watching the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Eugene (Nancy) Rouan Jr. of Florida, Thomas (Mary) Rouan of Boardman, Robert (Andrea) Rouan of Austintown and Richard (Deborah) Rouan of Austintown; six daughters, Carol (Dane) Carder of Florida, Margaret (Terry) Fagan of Poland, Paula Rouan of Austintown, Susan (Kenneth) Boros of Deerfield, Mary Lou (Daniel) Watson of West Virginia and Catherine (Joseph) Merolillo of Austintown; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Nancy (John) Burke of Liberty and Marlene Woods of New Jersey.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Rouan; a daughter, Nancy Ann Rouan; two brothers, four sisters; a brother-in-law, Richard Woods; and a granddaughter, Amanda Marie Ferraro.

She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman.

Roy W. Scarazzo Sr., 84

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 1 p.m. at St. Christine Church in Youngstown with the Rev. Msgr. David W. Rhodes officiating, preceded by a 12:15 p.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Roy W. Scarazzo Sr., 84, who peacefully passed away Thursday evening, April 2, 2009, with his family by his side.

Roy will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born Sept. 13, 1924, in New Castle, Pa., the son of Patsy and Mary (Cherby) Scarazzo, and moved to the Youngstown area in 1963.

Roy was employed as a Business and Accounting teacher with the Youngstown City School System for 26 years and retired in 1987. He taught at South High School and then spent many years teaching at The Rayen School.

He was a 1943 graduate of New Castle High School and attended Penn State University. Roy graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and then received his Master’s Degree in Education from Kent State University.

Roy was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in Europe and the South Pacific and earned the rank of Technician 5th Grade with the Engineer Maintenance Company. He received the following decorations: the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal of World War II, American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

Roy was a member of St. Christine Church, the ITAM Post 3 on Meridian Road, VFW Post No. 7538 in Struthers, the Alpha Phi Delta Alumni, an active member and past president of the Youngstown Wolves Club Den VI and for many years was a trustee and a member of the Curbstone Coaches. He was treasurer of St. Vincent DePaul and of The Great Chatter Box Club of Youngstown, served on all the committees for the YEA, former treasurer and Board Member of the Youngstown City Schools Credit Union, and former past president of the Youngstown Men’s Garden Club.

He truly enjoyed gardening, growing garlic, golfing, collecting model trains and coins, bowling in the teacher’s leagues and traveling the world, and was an avid sports fan especially for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

His wife, the former Lois Steele, whom he married Nov. 18, 1950, died Sept. 13, 2005.

He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Patricia (Anthony) Cascarelli of Canfield; two sons, Roy Jr. (Gail) Scarazzo of Bakers Field, Calif., and Richard Sr. (Barbara) Scarazzo of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Roy Scarazzo III, Bryan Scarazzo, Barbara (Nick) Martinez, Sarah Scarazzo and Richard Scarazzo Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Tedde of New Castle, Pa.

Besides his wife and parents, Roy was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Scarazzo, and a brother, Arthur Scarazzo Sr.

Friends may call on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Military honors will be provided by the Trumbull County American Legion.

Katherine A. Schnell, 86

STRUTHERS – A private service was held Saturday at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for Katherine A. Schnell, 86, who passed away Wednesday.

Katherine was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Hermansville, Mich., a daughter of Joseph and Sylvia Rodentich Hlay. She came to the area as a young woman.

She was a waitress at the 20th Century and the Voyager.

Katherine married Walter Schnell in September of 1964, and he passed away on Feb. 27, 2001.

She leaves on son, Joseph E. (Marilyn) Pavlacic in New Castle, Pa.; one daughter, Judy (Anthony) Marino; one brother, Joseph Hlay of Niles; one sister, Pauline (Joseph) Ciavarella of Poland; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves her beloved dog, Dolly.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Mary Maule.

The family would like to thank Greg Kupec for officiating the service.

Nancy James Stillwagon

CANFIELD – Nancy James Stillwagon was born July 11, 1922, in Youngstown. She was the only child of Emily Ohl James and Frederick W. James. 

She attended South High School in Youngstown and graduated from Lake Erie College.

In 1944, she married Franklin Krehl Stillwagon, who died in 1998. 

Nancy was active in the Junior League of Youngstown. She was also active with the Symphony Guild of the Youngstown Symphony and served as president. She served on the board of the Youngstown Symphony and sang with the Symphony chorus.

 Music was of central importance in her life as evidenced by her involvement with the Youngstown Symphony. In addition, she sang in the choir for her church, Trinity Methodist Church of Youngstown, and soloed for various other churches in the area. She was involved with Lake Erie College, serving as alumni representative to the Board of Trustees in the 1960s and was also instrumental in fundraising for the recent renovation of the college’s Skinner organ. She played tennis most of her life and enjoyed being outdoors whenever possible, especially if it involved tending to her flower garden. She traveled extensively with her husband up until his death. 

Nancy is survived by her three children, Nancy K. Stillwagon of Kent, Fred J. Stillwagon (Karen) of Canfield, and Dr. Paul K. Stillwagon (Ann) of Winchester, Va. She has seven grandchildren, Amy E. LaCivita (Jason) of Milan, Ohio, Douglas F. Stillwagon (Kathleen) of Chicago, Ill., David J. Stillwagon of Youngstown, Matthew C. Stillwagon of Winchester, Va., Bradford K. Stillwagon of Houston, and Deane F. Stillwagon and Alexis K. Stillwagon, both of Canfield. She was also blessed to have two great-grandchildren.

 Services will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, Youngstown, on Wednesday, April 8 at 1 p.m.

Family and friends will be received from Noon to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the service. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to the Youngstown Symphony Society.

Arrangements are being handled by the Davis Funeral Home.
