Patricia “Patti” Appleman, 59

AUSTINTOWN - Patricia Appleman, 59, passed away late Saturday morning, April 4, 2009, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Patricia, who was affectionately known as “Patti,” was born March 21, 1950, in Youngstown, a daughter of Michael J. and Anne M. Balash Kekish and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1968 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School and was a 1971 graduate of the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. She was a homemaker and a Registered Nurse, CNOR at Forum Health Northside Medical Center for 36 years, retiring as a surgical nurse in 2007.

Patti was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church.

She enjoyed ballroom dancing, walking in the park, gardening, flowers, and enjoyed spending time with her friends. Patti was a fun-loving person who loved people and always looked for the good in everyone, accepting people for who they are. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Patti leaves her son, Mark Appleman of Boardman; her mother, Anne M. Kekish of Austintown; her loving companion, Leonard Lucas of Warren; and her former husband, Robert Appleman of Boardman.

Her father, Michael J. Kekish is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today, April 6, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a prayer service will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services will begin on Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.

Andrew G. Burich, 92

STRUTHERS – Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell for Andrew G. Burich, 92, formerly of Campbell, who passed away Saturday, April 4 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Andrew was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Hillsville, Pa., the son of the late George and Mary Panian Burich.

He attended Mohawk City Schools and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II in the 3rd Armored Division, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge campaign.

Andrew worked at the Republic Steel Co. and later at LTV Steel Co. as a pipe fitter.

He was a member of the St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell, where he belonged to the Men’s Civics Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post 560 in Campbell and after retirement, he faithfully worked bingo and was a custodian at the church hall.

Andrew loved being with his family and friends. He took great pride in his Croatian heritage, enjoying the music and ethnic food.

He was an avid Cleveland sports fan, listening on the radio and watching on TV. He also enjoyed following the local area sports teams.

His U.S. military career was very special to him and he often reminisced about his tour of duty. He was honored to have served his country.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Stephen “Mickey” (Elaine) Burich of Struthers; a daughter, Elaine (Joseph) Simione of Boardman; daughter-in-law, Diana Burich of Struthers; grandchildren, Kristina (Patrick) Walsh, Michael and Darren Burich, and Eric, Anthony, Tina and Liane Simione; great-grandchild Dillon Walsh; and sisters-in-law Mary (Burich) Arbie and Helen Kovalan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Blasko Burich, whom he married Aug. 14, 1943, and who died in 1989; his son, George Burich; sisters Fanny Medovich and Catherine Hvisdak; and a brother, John Burich.

The family would like to thank the residents of the Struthers Manor, where he resided for the last 19 years, for their friendship, kindness and help.

A special thanks to Andrew’s godchild Renee for her medical help and support.

The Burich family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.

A prayer service will be conducted at 6 p.m.

Louise Jane Burns, 81

SHARON, PA. – Mrs. Louise Jane Burns, 81, of 231 Jefferson Ave., passed away on Friday, April 4, 2009, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, following a brief illness.

Louise was born on June 8, 1927, in Sharon to her parents, Adam Klein and Anna Bast Klein.

Louise worked at Sharon Steel Corporation until she married her husband, Arthur Burns, on Feb. 10, 1950.

Mr. Burns preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1985.

Mrs. Burns loved to solve crossword puzzles, watch game shows, and bake cookies, bread and pie.

Mrs. Burns is survived by two daughters, Clara Jones and her husband, Richard of Liberty Township and Geri Anderson and her husband, Daryl of Sharpsville, Pa.; three sons, Arthur Burns of Sharon, John Burns of Sharon and Charles Burns and his wife, Willafay of Sharon; two brothers, John Klein of Hermitage, Pa and James Klein of Farrell, Pa; three sisters, Elizabeth Battyani of Transfer, Pa, Dorothy Davis of Sharon and Eleanor McGill of Sharon; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Edward Klein; three sisters, Sophie Owens, Joan Klein and Anna Snider; and a great-grandson, Ashton Dubay.

Friends may call at the Sample-O’Donnell Funeral Home, corner of East State St. at North Oakland Ave. in Sharon from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday April 7, 2009.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, with the Rev. Lori Holstein, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharpsville officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Hermitage.

Arrangements are being handled by the Sample–O’Donnell Funeral Home.

Eleanor M. Chutz, 82

LOWELLVILLE - Funeral prayers will begin at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 8 at the Rossi-Lellio Funeral Home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, both in Lowellville, for Eleanor M. Chutz who passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 4, 2009.

Eleanor was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Youngstown, the daughter of Anthony and Rose (Rotz) Fiorentine.

She was a homemaker and also worked at Fireline.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Church, the Ladies Guild, and the Mt. Carmel Ladies Auxiliary.

She enjoyed playing bingo, bowling and bocce but most of all, loved to attend her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Her husband, James Chutz, whom she married Oct. 8, 1948, passed away January 14, 1974.

She will always be remembered by her two daughters, Patty (Paul) Meehan and Debbie (Tom) Collins, all of Lowellville; five grandchildren, Matthew, Bryan, and Krissy Meehan, and Patrick and Rachel Collins; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Rosemarie; a sister, Mary Lio; and three brothers, Michael, Gilbert and an infant.

John Gregory Nackino, 70

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, 400 Lincoln Park Drive in Youngstown with the Rev. Charles Poore officiating, preceded by a 10:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman for John Gregory Nackino, 70, who passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at his residence in Youngstown.

John will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born Feb. 16, 1939, in Youngstown, the son of Gregory and Rose (Oreco) Nackino.

John was a 1956 graduate of East High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from July 1956 until 1958 reaching the rank of Corporal. His specialty was an Artillery Section Chief and received the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon discharge, John studied Civil Engineering at Youngstown State University, where he maintained honors and was on the Dean’s List. He worked as a Chief Architectural Draftsman at various firms in the area.

John was an avid reader and loved sports, especially baseball, golf and football, where his allegiance shifted from the Cleveland Browns to the Cincinnati Bengals when Paul Brown left the Browns.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his sisters, Mary (George) Magner and Margi (Anthony “AJ”) Napoli; his brothers, Gregory (Toni), Anthony (Patricia) and James (Cecilia) Nackino; four nephews; one great-niece; three great-nephews; several aunts; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Trumbull County American Legion.

Naomi L. Panno, 80

YOUNGSTOWN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Naomi L. Panno, 80, formerly of Canfield Road, who died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 12:01 a.m. at Briarfield Manor.

Naomi was born Feb. 5, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of James and Armalinda Schiavone Pantalone.

She worked in the business office at St. Elizabeth Health Center, retiring in 1994.

She was a very active member of the church as a eucharistic minister and volunteer.

She was also a member of the National Secretary Sorority and was a 1946 graduate of The Rayen School.

Naomi is survived by a brother, Donald (Sylvia) Pantalone; a nephew, James L. Loto; a great-nephew, James N. (Mary Beth) Loto; her great-nieces, Jennifer A. and Jeana M. Loto; and two great-great-nephews, Camden and Joseph Loto.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elizabeth A. Loto and her husband, Nicholas A. Loto; and her great-nephew, Joseph R. Loto.

Family and friends may call one hour before the Mass at the church.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Schiavone Funeral Home.


Agnes C. Remish, 91

SALEM – Agnes C. Remish, 91, formerly of New Waterford, died at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Essex I of Salem.

Mrs. Remish was born Feb. 21, 1918, in New Waterford, a daughter of the late John and Agnes Russell Blazvick and had lived in this area all of her life.

Agnes, along with her husband, owned and operated the former Johnnie’s Radio and Appliance Store in East Palestine for more than 20 years. She also worked for the Truck Stops of America in North Lima.

Agnes was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in East Palestine, where she was a member of the choir, taught CCD, was a member of the Ladies Aide Society, SALT Team, and Christian Mothers. She was a substitute teacher for the Our Lady of Lourdes School and was also a member of the East Palestine Amateur Radio Club, where her call letters were K8CHL. She also enjoyed reading, sewing and writing poetry.

Her husband, John Remish, whom she married Nov. 26, 1936, died Sept. 3, 1999.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet (Karl) Remish-Dancik of St. Leonard’s, Canada, Judith Ann Johnson of San Antonio and Juanita Sheerer of New Waterford; a son, Joseph (Kathy) Remish of Columbiana; 10 grandchildren, Brian (Deb) Graham, Bruce Graham, Shannon Johnson, Mitchell (Ellen) Johnson, Joseph (Kristie) Remish Jr., Jeffery (Dawn) Remish, Jereld (Laura) Remish, Cynthia (Ron) Carlson and William Sheerer; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Agnes Remish; her sons, John and James Remish; four sisters, Anna Vinoverski, Mary Kliner, Ella Almond and Wilma Blazvick; three brothers, Peter, George and Joseph Blazvick; a grandson, Christopher Graham; and a great-granddaughter, Alaina Remish.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Cipar officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home in East Palestine.

Connie F. Roberts, 78

YOUNGSTOWN – Connie F. Roberts, 78, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the Hospice House, with her family at her side.

Mrs. Roberts was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Youngstown, a daughter of Michael and Theresa (Marzano) Santoro, and was a lifelong area resident..

She attended North High School and worked at Loblaw’s, and was a short order cook for several restaurants in the area.

She loved traveling to Virginia Beach on vacations with her family, and also going on bus trips with her friends to many places.

Her husband of 46 years, John “Mike” Roberts, whom she married Oct. 29, 1960, died Oct. 16, 2006.

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Diane Roberts of Youngstown, with whom she made her home, Christine (Chuck) Rotz of Poland and Sandy (Paul) Bindas of Canfield; three grandchildren, Chas Rotz, Christopher Rotz and Paul Michael Bindas; one sister, Mary Jane (Gene) Noday of Youngstown; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Santoro, numerous nieces and nephews and her three dogs, Boozer, Piko and Barney.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Anthony “Tony” Santoro and her nephew, Michael Santoro.

Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where prayers will be Wednesday at 12:45 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, with Fr. Charles Poore, officiating. Entombment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Lowellville.

Pauline L. Rouan, 82

YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will be Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Msgr. Robert Siffrin at 1 p.m. at St. Edward Church in Youngstown for Pauline L. Rouan, 82, who passed away Thursday evening at her home.

Pauline was born July 19, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Erisky.

She was a graduate of South High School. She was a homemaker and worked for the Wick Building downtown, retiring in 1993. Pauline was a member of the church and was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bingo and watching the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Cavaliers.

She leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Eugene (Nancy) Rouan Jr. of Florida, Thomas (Mary) Rouan of Boardman, Robert (Andrea) Rouan of Austintown and Richard (Deborah) Rouan of Austintown; six daughters, Carol (Dane) Carder of Florida, Margaret (Terry) Fagan of Poland, Paula Rouan of Austintown, Susan (Kenneth) Boros of Deerfield, Mary Lou (Daniel) Watson of West Virginia and Catherine (Joseph) Merolillo of Austintown; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Nancy (John) Burke of Liberty and Marlene Woods of New Jersey.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Rouan; a daughter, Nancy Ann Rouan; two brothers, four sisters; a brother-in-law, Richard Woods; and a granddaughter, Amanda Marie Ferraro.

She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Harry D. Summers, 77

HUBBARD – There will be funeral services at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Harry D. Summers, 77, who passed away Saturday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Harry was born Oct. 15, 1931, in Walton, W.Va., a son of Everett L. and Willa Mae Droddy Summers.

He attended The University of Pittsburgh. He was a superintendent for East Ohio Gas Co. and retired after 38 years of service.

He was a member of Elks B.P.O.E. and Industrial Management Club of Mahoning County. He was a member of the First Church of God of Ashtabula and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

His wife, the former Irene M. Copeland, whom he married April 24, 1953, passed away Sept. 9, 2002.

He leaves a son, Harry T. Summers of Warren and two daughters, Larraine I. Summers of Ashtabula and Lisa A. Summers of Warren. He is also survived by a brother, Clairmont Summers of Jupiter, Fla.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ray D. Summers and Harold Summers; and his sisters, Erma Summers and Inez Ashberry.

There will be calling hours Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Brookfield Township Cemetery.

Michael Turjanica, 83

LYNDHURST – Michael Turjanica, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 4, 2009.

He was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Star Junction, Pa.

He was the son of John and Mary (Baka) Turjanica.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian; two sons, Wayne and Douglas; four grandchildren, Michael, Thomas, David and Gloria; two brothers and four sisters, John Turjonis, Joseph Turjanica, Mary Olinik, Ann Van Such, Irene (Edward) Brienz and Margaret (William) Zigarevich. He also leaves many nephews and nieces.

His sister, Helen Zaykosky, and his parents preceded him in death.

Michael was a graduate of Scienceville High School in Youngstown.

During WWII Michael served in the 104th Infantry “Timberwolves” Division.

After the war, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colorado. He was the Senior Chemical Engineer and Manager at General Electric Chemical Product Division, where he was employed for more than 50 years until his retirement.

He remained very active in fraternal and civic activities his entire life and served as a Civil Service Commissioner for the City of Lyndhurst and as Secretary of the Cuyahoga County Civil Service Commissioners.

He was Secretary/Treasurer of the Ohio Chapter of the National Timberwolves Association, a member of The American Legion, a long time Deacon and Elder of the Lyndhurst Presbyterian Church, a Republican precinct committeeman for over 50 years, Vice President of the Lyndhurst Republican Club, and an active member of the Shiners and Acacia Masonic Lodge #651.

He received citations for his continuing service to senior citizens in the volunteer taxpayer assistance programs of the IRS/AARP.

He was an avid golfer and bowler and organized and served as the long time President of several local leagues.

Friends will be received at the Nicol-Wells-Kloss Funeral Home, 5252 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, 44124 on Tuesday, April 7 from 4 to 8 p.m.

There will not be a procession from the funeral home to the cemetery, but there will be a short military interment for those who wish to attend prior to the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Acacia Memorial Park at 1880 S.O.M. Center Road.

A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday April 8 at the Lyndhurst Presbyterian Church at 5312 Mayfield Road.

If desired, in lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations to the Lyndhurst Presbyterian Church or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119

Marjorie “Marge” Wilson, 64


BOARDMAN – Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Presbyterian Church for Marjorie “Marge” Wilson, 64, who died Saturday.

Marge was born Jan. 23, 1945, in Hattiesburg, Miss., the daughter of Glen H. and Mary J. (Seger) Wilson.

Marge was an active member of the church, where she has served as a Deacon, and belonged to the Secret Pal’s Group of the church. She retired from Pat Catan’s in 2007, where she had worked in sales and in the office. Prior to Pat Catan’s, Marge had worked for J.C. Penny and Hills Department Store. She loved to do crafts and loved to sew for her family. She loved reading books and studying the Amish.

Marge will be sadly missed by her mother, Mary of Boardman; her sister, Diana Short of Youngstown; her brother, Bob Wilson of McDonald; her niece, Kimberly (Dan) Deming of Sandusky; and her nephew, Adam Wilson and his mother, Peggy of Mineral Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her father, Glen and brother, James.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, prior to the funeral services.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the church in Marge’s name.

The Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
