Dale Franklin Aeppli, 70
YOUNGSTOWN Dale Franklin Aeppli, 70, died April 9, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital.
Mr. Aeppli was born Nov. 25, 1938 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Paul and Alma Jones Aeppli.
He was a graduate of New Springfield High School and worked as a dragline operator for Carbon Lime Stone for 26 years.
Mr. Aeppli was a U.S. Army veteran.
He leaves his wife, the former Margaret L. Black, whom he married June 20, 1962; three daughters, Elayne Jones of Poland, Debbie (James) Lossick of Dallas, Ga. and Tina (Michael) Nagel of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Shirley (Fred) Beight of New Middletown; and nine grandchildren, Charles and Craig Jones, Dennis Andrews, Danielle Hiet, Joshua and Jessica Lossick and Nicholas, Patrick and Christina Nagel.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be no calling hours or services.

Albert L. Big Al Campana, 83
STRUTHERS - A memorial Mass will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave. in Youngstown, for Albert L. Big Al Campana, 83, who passed away Tuesday morning at his home surrounded by his family.
Al was born Feb. 25, 1926 in Hubbard, the son of Andy and Angela (Carano) Campana.
Al graduated from Hubbard High School. He served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He played football at Younstown College from 1946 to 1949. Al scored 39 career touchdowns at Youngstown State University, averaging nearly 6.5 yards per rush. He was named to the Little All-America squad three times, twice earning first-team honors. Al played for the NFLs Chicago Bears from 1950 to 1952, and the Chicago Cardinals in 1953. He was inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Trumbull County Hall of Fame in 2003. After retiring from football, he served a distinguished role as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Struthers Schools.
Al leaves his wife, the former Lucille Sacomani, whom he married Nov. 26, 1949; his children, TJ (Debbie) Campana of Struthers, James R. (April Vitale) Campana Sr. of Youngstown and Maryann (Richard) Demesko of Poland; his two sisters, Maryellen Hoolihan of Champion and Norma Clemente of Struthers; his brother, Tom Campana of Kent; 10 granchildren, Mandi Marie, Ty, Brooke, Candace and Dalton Campana, James R. Campana II, Nicole and Melodie Campana and Laila and Carmen Tanferno; and a great-grandson, Tristan Campana.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Mandi Campana; his sister, Carmel Garchar; and his three brothers, Jars, Ralph and George Campana.
Friends may call Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Gary James Caswell, 61
POLAND- Gary James Caswell, 61, passed away of a massive heart attack Tuesday evening at his home.
Gary was born Sept. 11, 1947 in Youngstown, a son of Arden and Rita Quinn Caswell and he was a life-long area resident.
A 1965 graduate of Struthers High School, Gary served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War from Aug. 15, 1967 to March 21, 1969. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart.
Gary was employed at Youngstown Steel Door for 20 years and for eight years in maintenance for St. Mary's Alzheimers Clinic in Columbiana, retiring in 2008.
He was a member of the Eagles and the VFW. Gary enjoyed many activities and sports, faithfully cheering on the Detroit Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes. One of his greatest attributes was his loyalty to his family and friends. He could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, where he married his beloved wife, Darlene Calve, on Dec. 30, 1967. Besides Darlene, he leaves his daughter, his greatest fan, Terra C. Caswell, of Struthers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Colleen Lingo, Lorna and John Pawlosky, all of Boardman and Peggy and Michael Jackintell of Struthers; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sharon Caswell of Poland; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and JoAnn Calve of Boardman; nine nieces and nephews, Mandy and Dave Schialdone, Richard and Christina Calve, Dennis and Kristi Pacholec, Michael Pacholec, Katie and Megan Caswell, Lisa Pawlosky, Amy and Victor DiMargio and Kaylee Jackintell; one great-niece, Torrence Schialdone; and two great-nephews, Dawson Pacholec and Victor DiMargio Jr.
Besides his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Lena Alusia Calve; and one niece, Heather Ann Caswell.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, with Father Bob Bonnot officiating. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Earl Hayes
WILMINGTON, N.C. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the Davis Funeral Home in Wilmington, N.C., for Mr. Earl Hayes, formerly of Youngstown, who passed away April 3, 2009.
Mr. Hayes was born Dec. 5, 1934 in Menden, W.Va., the son of Cladyes and Emma Robinson Hayes Sr.
Earl had a passion for reading, fishing and cooking. He served as a trooper in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of VFW Donald Lockett Post 6488.
His wife, the former Betty Mozley, whom he married July 12, 1971, passed away Dec. 9, 2005.
He is survived by a daughter, Monica Hayes; and a son, Earl Patrick Hayes, both of Wilmington; three sisters, Carla Kemp of Washington, Marva Wilson and Gladys Wilson, both of Detroit; and four brothers, Bishop McCarthy (Lois), McCoy (Carol), and Jerome (Louise), all of Youngstown and Norris of Santa Maria, Calif.
Earl will be sadly missed by his very special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clarett; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ida M. Hayes; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Jonathan Hayes; and two brothers, Cladyes Jr. and Carl Hayes.

Anthony Tony Kopnisky, 84
BOARDMAN Private family services were held Thursday afternoon for Anthony Tony Kopnisky, 84, who passed away Sunday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Tony was born July 4, 1924 in Shoaf, Pa., the son of John and Elizabeth Pisgura Kopnisky.
He was a graduate of Georges Township High School and retired from Republic Steel.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Youngstown. He was also a Recorder 40 at Blooming Mill, Local 1331 and a former sergeant at Auxiliary Police Lodge 260.
Tony leaves to cherish his memory a stepdaughter, Marianne (Cornel) Oltean of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepson, John (Susan) Grdic of New Middletown; three grandchildren, Lisa Oltean of Nashville, Jack (Jodi) Grdic and Jeff (Liz) Grdic, both of Canfield; and four great-grandchildren, Lexi, Lily, Jake and Kate.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ann Grdic Kopnisky, who passed away Feb. 12, 2005; brothers, John, Joseph, Michael, Steve, Andrew, Paul and George; and two sisters, Mary Danko and Kathryn Lisauskis.
The Kopnisky family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell.
Patrick S. Red Mele Jr., 76
COLUMBIANA Patrick S. Red Mele Jr., 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Boardman Campus.
He was born Jan. 24, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Patrick S. and Mary Sevyak Mele Sr.
He served America honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After returning from the service, he completed his education and graduated from Chaney High School, where he was recognized for his artistic talents. He attended junior college.
Pat worked for various railroads, including the P.& L.E. and CSX Corporation, from where he retired. He was a lifelong area resident. He enjoyed watching sports with his son, Chris, and attending sporting events. He played baseball and basketball in the Marines and later played on local baseball and softball teams as well as local golf leagues. He was proud that he was a scratch golfer, which was stated in Golf Digest as most improved golfer.
He will be sadly missed by his son, Chris Mele and daughter in law, Sandy and his daughter, Susan (Curt) Cox. He also leaves three brothers, Richard (Leda) Mele, Vincent (Irene) Mele and Robert Remedio; three sisters, Carol (Mike) Benya, Marie Taafe, Bernadette (Harry) Gardner; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Marchionda and two brothers, Phillip and John.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana, with Pastor Kari Lankford officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

Gary E. Merriman, 62
NEWTON FALLS Gary E. Merriman, 62, passed on Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
On April 6, 1947 in East Liverpool, George E. and Ruth I. Moore Merriman welcomed the birth of their son, Gary.
He was a 1966 graduate of Field High School in Brimfield. He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 21, 1967, where his overseas assignment was in Korea. Upon completing his oversees duty, Gary was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve. He received his honorable discharge on Aug. 20, 1973. Upon leaving the service, he returned to this area. Gary obtained employment at Packard/Delphi in 1973 and retired from his duties as serviceman in 2008. He also served as a committeeman.
Gary enjoyed woodworking and would give his family and his friends items that he crafted. He was dedicated to the support of the Emmanuel Community Care Center in Girard.
Memories of Gary will be carried on by his family, his mother; his brothers, Terry A. Merriman and Jerry A. Merriman, both of Newton Falls and Lanny E. Merriman of Kent; his sisters, Sharon Hawkins of Orlando, Fla. and Karen Merriman of Newton Falls; his nieces and nephews, Doug, Scott and Chris Hawkins and Monica, Aaron, Kerry, Rachel, Eric and Macie Merriman.
He was preceded in death by his father.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 11, 2009, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Borowski Memorial Home, where a service will follow at 2 p.m., with Pastor Fred Youngen officiating.
Interment will be at Hawley Cemetery in Paris Township.

Agnes R. Mills, 84
GIRARD Agnes R. Mills, 84, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at her home.
She was born June 12, 1924 in Girard, the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (Sherock) Forte.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Rose Church in Girard. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and bingo player.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel Mills, whom she married Dec. 18. 1950; two children, Ronald Mills and Patricia Mills, both of Girard; three brothers and one sister, Joseph Forte, James Forte, Fredrick Forte and Mary Forte, all of Girard; two grandchildren, Megan Mills and Charri Everson; and three great-grandchildren, Ian, Raeann and Gabriel.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Eugene Forte.
Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Rose Church, with prayers at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Girard City Cemetery.
Galen Wilford Seidner, 81
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. Galen Wilford Seidner, 81, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville.
He was born on June 25, 1927 in New Springfield.
He worked for Republic Steel for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Russell Seidner; son, Galen Seidner, Jr. and wife Kim of Charlotte, N.C.; and sisters, Edith Crosbie and Olive Willett.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, with the Rev. Michael Grant officiating. Visitation will follow at the church.

YOUNGSTOWN Private services were held today at the McVean, Hughes and McClurkin Funeral Home for Robert J. Slanco, 57, who died Monday evening at his residence.
Robert was born March 4, 1952 in Youngstown, the son of Michael and Helen Mantus Slanco. He was employed by M&M Security Company.
Robert is survived by his mother, Helen Slanco of Youngstown; a sister, Debra Hallaman of Boardman; a niece, Amber; nephew, Mathew; and great-grandnephew, Micah.
Patricia J. Stacey, 75
COLUMBIANA Patricia J. Stacey, 75, of 220 N. Bayshore Drive, passed away Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009, at Hospice House in Boardman.
She was born Sept. 11, 1933 in Columbiana, the daughter of the late Delmar and Irene Hum.
Pat graduated from Columbiana High School in 1951. She received her R.N. at Hannah Mullins School of Nursing at Salem City Hospital and her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the Ohio State University, while working evenings at OSU Hospital.
She returned to Columbiana in 1959, working as an Assistant Director of Nursing at Salem City Hospital and later the acting director. Pat also worked as a Clinical Instructor at Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing and followed at Youngstown State University in the Associate Degree Program, retiring from teaching in 1978.
Pat served on the Columbiana Park Board for five years, was appointed to city council in 1986 and was elected to city council in 1987. She was coordinator of the Firestone Park Festival for many years and was in charge of volunteer nurses for Red Cross Blood Mobile during its Columbiana visits.
Pat was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Columbiana. She was an avid reader and golfer, and enjoyed bowling and bridge.
Surviving is her beloved husband, Larry, whom she married Sept. 17, 1955; two daughters, Kim (Stacey) Bivens and husband Mark of Charlotte, N.C. and Stephanie Stacey and husband Lou Gawron of Columbiana; one son, Lawrence W. Stacey II and wife Lisa of Columbiana; six grandchildren, Emma and Hannah Bivens, Lawrence W. Stacey III, and Jonathan, Mackenzie and Connor Stacey; and two brothers, Robert (Melissa) Hum and James (Wilma) Hum of Columbiana.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbiana, with the Rev. Ken Kelley officiating.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, April 10, 2009 at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and two hours prior to the funeral service from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Columbiana.

YOUNGSTOWN There will be a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc. for Less Tate Jr., 61, who departed this life on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Hospice House.
Mr. Tate was born Jan. 5, 1948 in Macon, Miss., a son of Less Sr. and Sallie Reed Tate.
He was a craneman for Youngstown Iron & Metal.
He leaves three daughters, Donnita J. Tate of Canal Winchester, Pertonia (Sterling) Jones of St. Louis and Angela Singleton of Youngstown; a son, Brian Tate of Niles; nine siblings, Earnest (Julia) Tate, Wiley Orr and Jimmy Davis, all of Charleston, Mo., Frank Davis and Annie Armstrong, both of Sikeston, Mo., Geneva and Rochelle Orr, both of Wyatt, Mo., Daisy Orr of Cairo, Ill. and Kim Webb of Marion, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
Besides his parents, five siblings, Sally M., Rosy B., Joe L. and Julie and Susie Orr, preceded him in death.

Kermit C. Ward, 82
BRISTOLVILLE Kermit C. Ward, 82, passed away peacefully at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at St. Josephs Health Care Center following a lengthy Illness.
He was born Jan. 8, 1927 in East Point, Ky., the son of Steve and Margaret (Hunnicutt) Ward.
Kermit came to Trumbull County in 1950, after serving in the U.S. Army to work at Republic Steel. He started as a first helper and then was a steel pourer for 20 years, retiring from LTV Steel in 1985.
He was a well known beekeeper and was the Trumbull County bee inspector for four years, from 1986 to 1990. He was a member of the Trumbull County and Ohio State Beekeepers Associations and was a former Boy Scout leader. Kermit was a 50 year member of Carroll F. Clapp No. 655 Masonic Lodge, and he attended the Bristolville Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 59 years, Dorothy (Mounts) Ward, whom he married March 23, 1950; two sons, Stephen H. (Lisa) Ward of Bazetta, Kermit E. Gene (Linda) Ward of Warren; granddaughter, Gabrielle Ward of Warren; and step-great-granddaughter, Chloe Bright, also of Warren. He also leaves three sisters, Ocie Weber and Pearl Margaret Robinson, both of Indiana and Alka May Shears of Florida.
Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, John, Douglas, Delbert, Steve and Charlie; and three sisters, Leona Ward, Lillian Young and Reba Ward.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Roberts-Clark Chapel. Pastor Michael Bower will officiate.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Carroll F. Clapp Masonic Lodge will conduct memorial services at 5: 45 p.m. å
Interment will be at Sager Memorial Cemetery in Bristolville where military honors will be observed.

Billie J. White Sr., 81
CANFIELD There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Billie J. White Sr., 81, who passed away Wednesday at Hospice House.
Billie was born Oct. 23, 1927 in Morgansville, W.Va., a son of the late Lester Earlin and Nola (Cain) White.
Billie worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Youngstown Metal Products and Mahoning Culvert Company for 11 years. He was then a self-employed plumber for 21 years. Billie then worked for the Columbiana School System for 10 years as a maintenance supervisor and stationary steam engineer, retiring in 1989. After retirement he worked security at Tippecanoe Country Club for 10 years.
He attended the Truth Baptist Church in Deerfield, was a member of the Mahoning County Coon Hunters Protective Association, and liked to hunt and fish.
Billies wife, the former Phyllis E. Seese, whom he married Oct. 28, 1949, passed away April 26, 2008.
He is survived by one son, Jeffrey (Vickie) White of Ellsworth; a daughter-in-law, Deanna White of Columbiana; one sister, Patricia Grimm of Phoenix; five grandchildren, Melissa Rowbottom, Dawn Engler, Pamela White, Jennifer White and Ashley White; two stepgrandchildren, Bambi Woodworth and Ashley McGee; nine great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, Billie was preceded in death by a son, Billie Jackson White Jr.; three brothers, Ulysses Grant White, Lester Earlin White; an infant brother; and one sister, Mary Pauline McNeish.
