Albert L. Big Al Campana, 83
STRUTHERS - A memorial Mass will be Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave. in Youngstown, for Albert L. Big Al Campana, 83, who passed away Tuesday morning at his home surrounded by his family.
Al was born Feb. 25, 1926 in Hubbard, the son of Andy and Angela (Carano) Campana.
Al graduated from Hubbard High School. He served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He played football at Youngstown College from 1946 to 1949. Al scored 39 career touchdowns at Youngstown State University, averaging nearly 6.5 yards per rush. He was named to the Little All-America squad three times, twice earning first-team honors. Al played for the NFLs Chicago Bears from 1950 to 1952, and the Chicago Cardinals in 1953. He was inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Trumbull County Hall of Fame in 2003. After retiring from football, he served a distinguished role as a teacher, coach and administrator in the Struthers Schools.
Al leaves his wife, the former Lucille Sacomani, whom he married Nov. 26, 1949; his children, TJ (Debbie) Campana of Struthers, James R. (April Vitale) Campana Sr. of Youngstown and Maryann (Richard) Demesko of Poland; his two sisters, Maryellen Hoolihan of Champion and Norma Clemente of Struthers; his brother, Tom Campana of Kent; 10 granchildren, Mandi Marie, Ty, Brooke, Candace and Dalton Campana, James R. Campana II, Nicole and Melodie Campana and Laila and Carmen Tanferno; and a great-grandson, Tristan Campana.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter, Mandi Campana; his sister, Carmel Garchar; and his four brothers, John, Jars, Ralph and George Campana.
Friends may call Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.

Patsy A. Carlini Jr., 80
YOUNGSTOWN There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at St. Christine Church in Youngstown, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Patsy A. Carlini Jr. 80, who peacefully passed away Wednesday morning April 8, 2009, with his beloved family at his side.
Pasty will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends and will live on in the hearts of all.
He was born Oct. 15, 1928 in Youngstown, the son of Patsy Sr. and Julia (Troll) Carlini and was a lifelong area resident.
Patsy was a tool and die maker with Extrusion Die Company until his retirement in 1990. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he earned the rank of Private First Class and received the following decorations, the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational Medal.
Patsy was a member of St. Christine Church, the VFW Post 93 on South Avenue, the ITAM Post 3 on Meridian Road and the Amerital Club.
He enjoyed doing yard work, BBQ on the grill, and socializing and telling stories with his family and friends. Patsy was always giving to anyone in need and always there to help his neighbors, but he mostly just loved to spend time with his family.
He leaves behind to hold on to his precious memories, his wife of over 47 years, the former Rose Mary Welsh, whom he married on July 29, 1961; three children, Christine (Frank) Merlino and Marie (Dr. Fred) Pruitt, both of Boardman and Raphe Neapolitan at home; four grandchildren, Dr. Chris (Val) Pruitt, Lysa Pruitt, Anthony Merlino and Patsy Carlini-Pruitt; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Pruitt; a sister, Virginia Gentile of Boardman; his favorite sister-in-law, Mary Grace Welsh of Youngstown; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dogs, Lucia and Bocce.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Safranic; four brothers, Joseph, Edward, George and Raymond Carlini; and his beloved father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mary Welsh.
Friends may call on Monday, April 13, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Trumbull County American Legion.

Claire J. Cerepak, 84
BOARDMAN Funeral services will be Monday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St., followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Stanislaus Church for Claire J. Cerepak, 84, who passed away Tuesday at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Boardman Campus.
Ms. Cerepak was born in Youngstown on July 8, 1924, a daughter of Frank and Rose Sznajkart Cerepak.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church as well as of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, the Altar and Rosary Sodality, the St. Stanislaus Lodge, and the Senior Citizens Group. She earned an associate in business degree from Youngstown State University. She retired as manager of the Vital Statistics office of the City of Youngstown in 1986 after 30 years of service.
Claire is survived by two sisters, Helen Mislevy of Boardman and Irene Lancy of Austintown; her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Cerepak of Boardman; her nieces, Carol (Jim) Hummer of Boardman, Alberta (Jack) Ellis of Orlando, Fla. and Nancy (Marc) Flinn of Poland; her nephew, John (Cindy) Cerepak of Mentor; and by seven great and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Pollock and Josephine Kurowski and by her brother, John Cerepak.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday morning from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

Lora L. Christy, 51
YOUNGSTOWN Lora L. Christy, of 1607 Crumrine Ave., formerly of Greenville, Pa., passed away at 6:49 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2009, unexpectedly of natural causes at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Lora was born in Greenville on May 12, 1957, the daughter of the late Robert W. and Kathryn E. (McKalip) Christy.
She was a 1975 graduate of Greenville High School. She worked for Carinis Restaurant in both Greenville and Transfer, and for the Spillway Inn in Linesville. She enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo, and computer games.
She was previously married to Eugene Rimer of Penfield, Pa. and Ray Zelker. She is also survived by her fiiancé, Wayne R. Griffiths at home; two sons, Christopher G. Rimer and his fiancé, Tracy Mahoney of Greenville and Dennis Tony A. Rimer and his fiancé, Delores Riley of Penfield; two brothers, Thomas G. Christy and his wife, Linda of Adamsville and Robert W. Christy and his wife, Betty of Adamsville; two stepbrothers, Floyd Jim McClimans and his wife, Jackie of Atlantic and Doug McClimans and his wife, Vickie of Greenville; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Dora A. McClimans-Christy; a sister, Susan Mitchell; a stepsister, Betty Fry; and a stepbrother, Dennis McClimans.
A memorial service will be held at the Osborne-Williams Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 73-75 Columbia Ave. in Greenville at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 13, with the Rev. William Segur, pastor of the Lifeway Church of the Nazarene in Greenville, officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Cremains will be buried at a later date.

Lt. Col. Frederick L. Cockman, 78
SAN ANTONIO Lt. Col. Frederick L. Cockman, 78, was born in Youngstown on April 16, 1930. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was called to the Lord on April 4, 2009.
Fred was an outstanding athlete at Poland High School. Fred lettered in football, track and basketball. After graduating from Poland in 1949, he entered Ohio University, where he earned track letters as a freshman and sophomore. A member of the Air Force ROTC while in college, he entered the Air Force after graduation from OU in 1952. As a member of the Air Force, he traveled to several bases in the United States and overseas. He served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Germany, Turkey, and the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf clusters for bravery in returning the base to working condition after a mortar attack. Other military awards include the National Defense Medal with battle stars, Air Force Longevity award with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Reserve Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and Meritorious Service Medal, all with oak leaf clusters.
Fred earned his Masters degree from the University of Southern California branch in Ramstein Germany. After retiring from the Air Force in 1972 with a rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, Fred went to work for the San Antonio School System as a biology teacher at Dillard McCollum High School. In 1978, both he and his wife, Janet, moved to Del Rio, Texas, where he was the principal of Sacred Heart Catholic School for eight years.
Fred was the son of Fred W. and Florence Edna Cockman formerly of Poland, Ohio.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edna; his brother-in-law, Jack Klinke; and his niece, Peggy Klinke.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Cockman; his children, Nan Frechette, Rick Cockman his wife, Dorina and Cindi Anderson her husband, Buddy; and his grandchildren, Kimberly Billings her fiance, Brent Budde, Travis Cockman, Elias Vogt, Laura Vogt and Becky Roosa and her husband, Chase.

CAMPBELL Services will be Tuesday, April 14, at noon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church for Mrs. Evelyn Coleman, 72, who departed this life Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Piedmont-Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Ga.
Mrs. Coleman was born Sept. 21, 1936 in Talladega, Ala., a daughter of Wren and Lizzie Swain Calhoun.
She was a graduate of Westside Senior High School in Alabama. She had been employed with General Motors Lordstown for 26 years, retiring in 1998. She was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and its Deaconess Ministry.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her beloved husband, Willie C., whom she married Feb. 5, 1957; a son, Kenneth T. (Callie) Coleman of Youngstown; two daughters, Susan E. (Karen) Coleman of Atlanta and Helen D. Coleman-Taylor of Childersburgh, Ala.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Elizabeth Cooksey, Ophelia (Wally) Weems and Shirley A. (Fred) Jones, all of Columbus, Edna-Wayne Calhoun of Atlanta and Patricia (Paul) Cass of Birmingham, Ala.; three brothers, Wren (Amanda) Calhoun Jr. of Talladega, John D. (Bernadine) Calhoun of Atlanta and Timothy Calhoun of Birmingham; and a host of family and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gerald; three brothers, Willie S., Napoleon and Booze McKerry Calhoun; and a great-grandson.

Phillip John Foley, 50
VIENNA Phillip John Foley, 50, died Thursday, April 9, 2009.
He was born Oct. 11, 1958, in Youngstown, the son of Phillip Foley and Dolores (Huskin) Foley.
He graduated from McDonald High School where he played basketball and football. He was also a graduate of St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. He furthered his education by earning a Bachelor in Science and a Bachelor of Labor Relations from Youngstown State University. He then attended the St. Elizabeth School of Nurse Anesthesia. He was most recently employed by Lima Memorial Hospital as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church in Vienna.
Friends and family meant the world to Phil. He was always available to help those in need. He volunteered at the rescue mission regularly. He enjoyed watching his daughter, Kasey, participate in athletic activities, including training her to participate in triathlons and watching her play softball. Phillip was an avid Steelers fan.
He is survived by his parents of McDonald; his wife, Janice (Collins) Foley, whom he married Oct. 26, 1984; his daughter, Kasey Foley of Vienna; two sisters, Diane Schriner of Austintown and Maureen Huyghe of Cuyahoga Falls; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Fisher of Austintown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William D. Foley and Ronald Foley and a brother-in-law, Patrick Collins.

Dominic F. Fontanella, 77
MCDONALD Dominic F. Fontanella, 77, of 1150 Parkview Drive, formerly of Niles, died at 10:11 a.m. Thursday, April 9, 2009, in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown from a heart ailment.
He was born in Girard on May 27, 1931 to Italian parents, Dionigi and Anna (Barreca) Fontanella and had lived in this area all his life.
He retired as a steel hooker from U.S. Steel Co., McDonald Works, following 30 years of service. He then was employed by the General Services Administration of Akron as a purchasing agent for seven years.
He was a Navy veteran and a member of Saint Stephens Catholic Church of Niles. Dominic graduated from Niles McKinley High School and with honors from Youngstown State University with a bachelors of science degree in education. He was an avid computer enthusiast and used the computer department at several local libraries.
He is survived by his sister, Mary Catherine (Kathy) Llewellyn of Girard and her family, a niece, Lisa Llewellyn and Robert Bailey of Warren and a nephew-in-law, John Husk of Girard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint Stephens Catholic Church on Monday, April 13, 2009, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski officiating.
Friends may call at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass on Monday.

Rev. Willie C. Gambles, 80
YOUNGSTOWN Rev. Willie C. Gambles, 80, passed away Sunday, April 5.
Rev. Gambles was born Feb. 6, 1929 in Troy, Ala., a son of Robert and Melissa Lucas Gambles.
Rev. Gambles worked as a crane operator at Sheet and Tube. He was an avid bowler, fisherman, hunter, and enjoyed gardening.
He was the previous pastor of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Heflin, Ala., having been ordained at Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Campbell. He was currently a member of Rising Star Baptist Church.
He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mary; two sons, David (Jackie) and Ronald Gambles, both of Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Flora (Ralph) Betts of Youngstown; two brothers, James (Christine) Gambles of Troy, Ala. and Johnny Gambles of Florida; a sister, Flora Mae Stringer of Florida; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nephews, nieces, other family members, friends and also pastors that he was affiliated with.
His parents; a daughter, Joyce Johnson; seven brothers and three sisters, all preceded him in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rising Star Baptist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to services.

HUBBARD There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Ella M. Lawn, 91, who passed away Thursday at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Ella was born June 2, 1917 in Youngstown, a daughter of Hugh H. and Emily E. Jagger Conn. She had lived in Phoenix from 1981 to 2001 and came to Hubbard in 2001.
She was an employee of the Boardman Local School District, working in the cafeteria for many years. She was a member of the Woodworth Church of the Brethren. She also enjoyed crafts and crocheting.
Her husband, Laurence E. Lawn, whom she married June 2, 1938, passed away Sept. 6, 2002.
She is survived by her sons, Laurence (Phyllis) Lawn Jr. of Bristoville, Gary H. Lawn of Hanoverton and Wayne E. Lawn of Hubbard, with whom she made her home; a daughter, Ella May (Michael) Bokor of Phoenix; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves her sisters, Jane Simpson and Carol Davis, both of Youngstown, Ruth Grist of Florida and Alberta Murtaugh of Hubbard.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Carl Conn and James Conn; sisters, Sarah Grist, Beatrice Campbell and Bessie Craig; and a grandson, Loren Lawn.
There will be calling hours Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.
Burial will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Lloyd N. Lilley, 62
BERLIN CENTER There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Lloyd N. Lilley, 62, who passed away Thursday morning.
Lloyd was born Feb. 23, 1947, in Tower Hill 2, Pa., a son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Ruffcorn) Lilley.
Lloyd had served in the U.S. Army for four years and then retired after 16 years of service in the Army Reserves. He retired in 1995 from General Motors, Lordstown after 30 years of service. He was currently working as a truck driver for CMD Logistics. He attended the Wickliffe Christian Church, enjoyed the outdoors, traveling, puttering in the garage, building campfires, all his family, and his dog, Missy. Lloyd was a member of the UAW 1112.
He is survived by his wife, the former Gloria McKay, whom he married Aug. 1, 1987; two children, Brian (Angela) Lilley of Monroe, N.C. and their children, Chelsea Pruitt, Sarah, and Seth, Tracy (William) Ledsome of Niles and their children, Brianna and Connor; three stepdaughters, Sherry (Chris) Miller of Apollo, Pa. and their children, Matthew and Patrick, Lora (Jack) Bodi of Indiana and their children, Rachael and Nicole and Beth (Rich) White of Vienna; two brothers, Arthur (Geri) Lilley of Delaware and Ronald Lilley of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Ruth (Lloyd) Gillis of Pennsylvania and Mildred (Jerry) Davis of Delaware.
Besides his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert A. Lilley and Donald Lilley; and a sister, Loma Coney.

HUBBARD There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church for Michael F. Pettola, 73, who passed away Thursday at home with his family at his side.
Michael was born May 5, 1935 in Sharon, Pa., a son of Louis and Marian Casiere Pettola. He was a lifelong area resident and a 1953 graduate of Sharon High School.
He was a machinist for Wean United of Warren and Advanced Monobloc in Hermitage, retiring in 1998. He was a life member of Hubbard Optimist Club, where he was past president and a member of Hubbard Friends of the Library. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and its Senior Citizen Club.
He was an avid bocce player and had played in many different area leagues. He was a coach and manager for Hubbard Community Youth League for many years. Michael was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He will be sadly missed by his family; his wife, the former Loretta Ghirardi, whom he married May 28, 1960; his sons, Michael A. (Janice) Pettola of Canfield, David P. (Mary Jane) Pettola of Hubbard and Jeffrey S. Pettola of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Jamie Pettola, Kristin Pettola, Lauren Pettola, Sara Pettola, David Pettola, Daniel Pettola and Patrick Pettola. He is also survived by his twin brother, Anthony Pettola of Hubbard; his sisters, Anita Napolitan of Boardman and Pat Krutsch of Mt. Vernon; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Oscar and Emma Ghirardi of Brookfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Virginia B. Rich, 86
NEW CASTLE, PA. Virginia B. Rich, 86, of Eastbrook Road, died Tuesday morning, April 7, 2009, at Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle.
She was born May 27, 1922 in New Castle, a daughter of the late Nick and Anna (Perine) Rainey.
She was married to Ralph E. Rich Sr., who died on July 8, 2005.
Mrs. Rich was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Parish. She worked at her family owned business, Rich & Freed Auto Parts, as a bookkeeper for over 40 years. Mrs. Rich loved cooking, baking and being with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling and was a member of various leagues for many years.
She is survived by one son, Ralph E. Rich Jr. and his wife, Amy of Hubbard; one daughter, Darlene A. Genareo and her husband, David of New Castle; and two grandsons, Ralph Rich and Andrew Rich of Hubbard.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, William, Angel and Clyde Rainey; and five sisters, Alma Fulton, Matilda Perod, Mary Lombardo, Viola Conti and Mildred Bailey.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home on Monday, April 13, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m.
