Donald R. Ackerman, 71
AUSTINTOWN Donald R. Ackerman, 71, passed away at 11:15 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2009, following an extended illness.
He was born March 8, 1938 in Salem, the son of Ralph and Gertrude (Sauerwein) Ackerman.
Mr. Ackerman was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of North Lima High School. Donald was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. He was employed by IBM as a computer technician for 27 years, retiring in 1992. He was also an avid woodworker and a master tech mechanic.
Donald is survived by his wife, Pauline Ackerman, whom he married Feb. 19, 1993. He is also survived by four sons, Mark (Mary Beth) Ackerman of Chester, W.Va., Benjamin Ackerman of Columbiana, Jeffrey Ackerman of Bessemer, Pa. and Aaron Ackerman of Tokyo, Japan; two stepdaughters, Sherry Catoline of Boardman and Brenda L. Connolly of Austintown; seven grandchildren, Aila Rae, Jennie Marie, Shane, Eric, Arin, Arianne and Miranda; three stepgrandchildren, Ryan, Brittany and Ariana; one great-grandchild, Ray Cayden; two sisters, Cheryl (Tom) Bell of Columbiana and Karen (Del) Houser of Madison, Fla.; and two brothers, Dennis (Carol) Ackerman of Manlius, N.Y. and Robert Ackerman of Boardman.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima, with the Rev. Michael Byus officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in North Lima.

Charles John Bannon, 44
NORTHVILLE, MICH. Charles John Bannon, 44, died on Saturday, April 18, after a three year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease.
Born in Youngstown in 1964, Chuck attended St. Christine and St. Charles elementary schools and graduated from Boardman High School in 1982. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio University in Athens in 1986.
After working for the Bendix Corp., in South Bend, Ind., as an engineer from 1986 to 1989, Chuck spent 17 years at Ford Motor Co., in Dearborn, Mich., where he worked in positions of increasing responsibility in product development. He spent three years at Fords Dunton facility in London, England from 1993 to 1995. A recognized expert in traction control and ABS brake systems, Chuck was awarded three patents from the U.S. Patent Office for automotive innovations.
An avid motorcycle road racer, Chuck raced at an expert level with WERA, AMA and Great Lakes road racing associations, winning a national event in 2003. He was a passionate motorcycle enthusiast, who took his bike to Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah in 1997 in a quest to break 200 mph.
He leaves his wife, Elaine Bannon, their son, John Charles, 5, of Northville; his father, Judge Charles J. Bannon and Joan Bannon of Youngstown; his mother, Elizabeth Betty Bannon of Boardman; a sister, Lisa Bannon of Glen Ridge, N.J.; a brother, Breen Bannon of Canfield; as well as four nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held today, April 21, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Casterline Funeral Home, 122 W. Dunlap St. in Northville.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory, 132 Orchard St. in Northville.
A memorial service will be held at Mill Creek Park in Youngstown this summer.

Carl Edward Eddie Berg Sr., 70
YOUNGSTOWN Carl Edward Eddie Berg Sr., 70, died April 19, 2009 at the Hospice House, after battling cancer for the last year.
Mr. Berg was born Jan. 5, 1939 in Youngstown, a son of the late Irving and Helen Larson Berg. He was raised in Struthers and moved to Youngstown in 1985.
He was a 1957 graduate of Struthers High School. Mr. Berg worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube in the Seamless Mill for 23 years, retiring in 1981. He then worked for Sherwin Williams for eight years, first at the Liberty store and then the Boardman store until just last year.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1961 to 1963.
Mr. Berg was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers. He was an avid NASCAR fan, rooting for Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Carl Edwards and enjoyed working on cars.
His wife, the former JoAnn Pirozzi, whom he married Oct. 4, 1985, died Feb. 15, 1999.
He leaves his daughter, Sherri Adams of Youngstown; three sons, Carl Eddie Berg Jr. of Hubbard Township, Steven (Diane) Hupp of Westlake and James Fuschillo of Youngstown; two sisters, Linnea Berg of Struthers and Katherine (William) Whitfield of Berlin Center; seven grandchildren, Clifford John II, Dustin James, Autumn Jade and Olivia Eleni Adams, Cory Logan Berg and Caroline and Michelle Hupp; one great-grandson, Clifford John Adams III; two nieces, Linda (David) Lance and Donna Whitfield, both of Struthers; and one nephew, Bobby Whitfield of Sebring.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, where family and friends will be received Thursday from 4 to 6:45 p.m., prior to the service.
Interment will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

William Clinton Brooks Sr., 79
SHAWBORO, N.C. William Clinton Brooks Sr., 79, formerly of Mineral Ridge, died at home in Shawboro on April 1, 2009.
Mr. Brooks was the son of the late Herbert C. and Esther Casey Brooks.
After graduation from Mineral Ridge High School, he served in the U.S. Marines for 30 years.
Besides his wife, Debbie, he leaves three daughters, Kathleen, Dawn and Michelle; five sons, William, Jim, John, Michael and Matthew; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, all of North Carolina; and a brother, Herbert G. of Canfield.
A memorial service with military honors was performed on April 7, 2009 at the Providence Baptist Church in Shawboro.

Rev. Michael J. Chonko, 96
NEW CASTLE, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Campbell, with Bishop George Murray presiding and the Rev. George Franko delivering the homily, for the Rev. Michael J. Chonko, 96, who passed away Saturday at Jamison Memorial Hospital.
Fr. Chonko was born Dec. 19, 1912 in MacDonaldton, Pa., the son of Andrew and Mary Gasper Chonko. He moved to Detroit in 1927, to Cleveland in 1931, and to New Castle in 1977.
In his early years, he attended a public, one classroom school in MacDonaldton, up to the 6th grade. After his dad was killed in a coal mine in January of 1927, the family moved to Detroit. He attended Burroughs Public School up to the 9th grade, since the parish had no high school. Circumstances as a result of the depression forced Father to discontinue his studies temporarily to work in the coal mines in his hometown in Pennsylvania.
In 1931, he continued his studies at the Benedictine High School in Cleveland and graduated in 1934. After graduating, he continued his college studies at St. Procopius College in Lisle, Ill. In 1936, he joined the Cleveland Slovak Benedictine Fathers and made his novitiate at St. Vincents Abbey in Latrobe, Pa. He continued his further college studies at St. Benedicts in Atchison, Kan., where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1939, upon returning to St. Andrews Abbey, he taught sciences. He was also the coach of golf, bowling and swim teams. He pursued his Theological Studies at St. Andrews Abbey. During the summer months, he continued his graduate work in Biological Science and Chemistry at Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
On March 20, 1943, he was ordained by the late Archbishop Hoban of Cleveland and celebrated his first Mass on March 28, 1943 at St. Cyril & Methodius Church in Detroit. MI. After his ordination, he was asked to help establish a church in Fayette.
In 1950, he became Assistant Pastor at St. John Slovak Parish in Campbell, where he was in charge of the festival, huge bingo games, a vast building program of the rectory, church, school and cemetery and the purchasing of the picnic grounds.
He was a religion, chemistry and physics teacher at Ursuline High School and designed the present chemistry lab. He was also the golf and Rifle team coach.
On March 19, 1958, Fr. Chonko was incardinated by Bishop Walsh, and two years later in 1960, he helped establish a parish in Columbiana. And in June of 1968, he was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls, and then retired on June 1, 1977.
Besides all of his duties at his churches, he was a Professor of Science for Youngstown State University, Instructor of Civil Defense, a principal and instructor in CCD classes in the Youngstown Diocese, a Chaplain of the Police and Police Associates of Campbell for 25 years, a member of the American Chemical Society, a member of the Catholic Jednota and Mens Catholic Sokols.
In 1970, the Youngstown amateur Invitational Golf Association honored him with a plaque as Golfer of the Year.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, George, Andrew and John Chonko; and sisters, Mrs. Betty Cirner, Mrs. Sue Savel, Mrs. Mary Bagos and Mrs. Anne Hercula.
Three siblings died in infancy.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Renovation and Improvement Fund in Fr. Chonkos name.
The Chonko family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Campbell.
Leo Stovall Cline, 68
NILES Leo Stovall Cline, 68, passed away unexpectedly at 10:55 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Cleveland Metro Health Hospital of a heart ailment.
He was born in Grayson, Ky. on March 12, 1941 to Leo and Irene (Clemens) Cline and came to Niles as a child.
A 1959 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, Leo honorably served for six years in the Army National Guard of Ohio. He previously worked for the J.V. McNicholas Company of Youngstown as a truck driver, Niles City Schools, as a custodian and crossing guard, JCPenney Company in Austintown in the maintenance department, the Ohio Security System Inc. (OSSI), as a security guard and in recent ent years as a driver for medical transportations with New Valley Taxi/Deluxe Transportation.
Stovall was a member of the Family Life Church, and enjoyed his church life, church family, fishing, hunting, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He especially cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren, he loved the family activities and vacations.
He is survived by a son, Richard (Marie) Cline of Niles; daughter, Cathy Bartek of North Jackson; four grandchildren, Cory and Sean Bartek and Jordan and Ashley Cline; and special friend, Barb Thomas of Niles.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie (Fabian) Cline, whom he married on Feb. 18, 1961, and who passed away on April 14, 1992; and a son-in-law, Don Bartek, who passed away on April 4, 2007.
Calling hours will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.
The funeral will be Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. George Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Kerr Cemetery.
Robert E. Davis, 60
BOARDMAN - Robert E. Davis, 60, died Friday afternoon of a motorcycle accident.
Bob was born Feb. 6, 1949 in Youngstown, the son of Harold and Anna Ellis Davis.
He was a 1967 graduate of East Palestine High School and was a truck driver for B&T Express. Bob served in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was a life member and past post Commander of the New Springfield VFW Post No. 2799. He also served as Mahoning County Commander. For over 17 years, Bob was very active in the local Alcoholics Anomynous.
Bob was an avid sports fan. He loved following Springfield Local, Youngstown State and the Cleveland Browns. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and camping. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
He leaves two sons, Robert R. (Brenna) Davis of East Palestine and Blaine Davis of Boardman; one daughter, Betsy M. (Dallas) Burns of Boardman; three sisters, Barbara Brown of New Springfield, Shirley Dunnegan of Austintown and Norma Jean Gillivan of North Carolina; three brothers, William H. Davis of North Lima, Walter L. Davis of New Springfield and Thomas E. (Sophie) Davis of Austintown; his uncle, Jack Ellis of Hubbard; his companion, June Johnson of Austintown; and his six grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Davis.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Wednesday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the New Springfield VFW Post No. 2799 will be conducting a service.

Mildred Hunter, 87
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mildred Hunter, 87, formerly of Youngstown and McDonald, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009, at White Oak Manor in Columbia.
Mildred was born July 6, 1921 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Paul and Maria Kisel, and lived most of her life in the area. She moved to McDonald in 1998 and subsequently to South Carolina to be with her daughter.
She was a Chaney High School graduate, was a homemaker, and also worked as a sales clerk for 20 years for the Strouss Company in downtown Youngstown and at the Victoria Road warehouse, retiring in the 1980s.
Mrs. Hunter was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Youngstown, and was a member of the McDonald Senior Citizens.
Mildred leaves her daughter, Denise Hunter of Elgin, S.C., with whom she had made her home; a nephew, James Fuese IV of Boardman; a great-nephew, James Fuese V; and three great-great-nephews, Brandon, Nicholas, and Jason Fuese.
Her husband, Joseph M. Homer Hunter, whom she married July 3, 1943, passed away April 16, 1990. A brother, Paul Kisel Jr. and a sister, Julia Fuese, are also deceased.

YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Tommy DePriest Jones Jr., 32, who departed this life Wednesday, April 15, 2009.
Mr. Jones was born June 19, 1976 in Youngstown, a son of Tommy D. Jones Sr. and Mary Helen Rodgers Jones and his paternal father, William Ponnie Johnson.
He leaves his fathers of Youngstown; three sisters, Margaret Lanna Jones and Marian Tish Jones, both of Youngstown and Ciera Johnson of Columbus; four brothers, Kemontey (Nicole) Law and Stanley Jones, both of Youngstown, Jermaine Johnson of Warren and Tyler Jones of Omaha Neb.; his grandparents, Margaret Lacey and Willie Mae Johnson, both of Youngstown; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dr. James A. Mazzi, 78
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP Dr. James A. Mazzi was born on Jan. 17, 1931 and passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009, the son of Samuel P. Mazzi and Marian E. (Napolitan) Mazzi.
He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1949, John Carroll University in 1953 and the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine 1957. He interned at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital from 1957 to 1958 and served on the Board of Trustees from 1966 to 1987. He was elected Chief of Staff from 1983 to 1986. Certified in Family Practice, he started the Family Practice Residency Program and was its Director from 1979 to 1989. He was appointed Chief of the Department of Physical Medicine from 1978 to 1990, where he served as a Consultant in Osteopathic Manipulation. He was a member of the Family Practice Department of Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital and Forum Health Care. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Academy of Disability Examining Physicians, the College of Family Practice, the American Osteopathic Society, and the Ohio Society of Osteopathic Medicine.
During his tenure as President of the Tenth District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, he was instrumental in establishing the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University in Athens. He served on the First Admission Committee and was appointed Adjunct Professor of Family Practice. He was a volunteer physician for the CCM Free Clinic at Youngstown State University from 1970 to 1975 that met the medical need of the students. He was the team physician of the St. Anthony Football Team and a consulting physician and member of the Upjohn Health Care Service Advisory Committee from 1981 to 1990. For fifteen years from 1981 to 1996, he served as Mahoning County Jail Physician. He retired after 44 years of active family practice in 2002.
Dr. Mazzi was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 38 years, Anita L. (RICCI) Mazzi, who was a Certified Cyto-Technologist.
He is survived by his daughters, Angela Louise Mazzi (David Bringle) an architect and Atty. Alicia Louise Mazzi, both of Cleveland; his grandchildren, Olivia Ann Bringle and Samuel Robert Bringle.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Parish and a lifelong member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
Prayer services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 343 Via Mt. Carmel in Youngstown, with the Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio celebrating. Interment will follow at Tod Homestead Cemetery.

Barbara Adaline Wells Hankins McLemore, 67
CLEVELAND Barbara Adaline Wells Hankins McLemore, 67, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009, at her home.
Barbara was born June 25, 1941 in Smithfield, a daughter of James and Mary (Cassels) Wells.
She graduated from South High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1959. She was a former member of the Greater Friendship Baptist Church. She relocated to Cleveland and was a proofreader at Union Common Bank for many years.
Barbara is survived by a son, Colin Quinn (Sylvia) Hankins; two brothers, James (Lorraine) Wells of Youngstown and Daniel (Celeste) Weste of Maryland; a sister, Constance (Samuel) Thurmon of Youngstown; and a former sister-in-law, Loretta Wells of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Princess, Bianca, Collean, Michelle and Kamaria; two great-grands, Precious and Jayden; five nephews, George (Surer) Nadal, Curtis (Antonia) Wells, Donald Wells, David Weste and Daniel Weste; two nieces, Mary Lynn (Joe) Brown and Kelly Wells; and a host of great-nieces and nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Nesbitt Funeral Home, 6415 Quincy Ave. in Cleveland.
Emily J. Millie Ruby, 91
CAMPBELL Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wasko Funeral Home and 2:30 p.m. at St. Joseph the Provider Church for Emily J. Millie Ruby, 91, who passed away Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Heath Center.
Millie was born July 13, 1917 in Campbell, the daughter of Matthew and Mary Stipitich and was a lifelong area resident.
Millie worked for Courtneys Restaurant on Glenwood Ave. and was a waitress at Strouss Grille before retiring.
She loved her grandchildren and great-granddaughters and enjoyed cooking for them, especially on the holidays. She enjoyed her cats, dancing, shopping at the mall with her friend Nancy, watching game shows and playing bingo, but most of all she enjoyed her long rides with her husband Arthur Babe Ruby, whom she married June 7, 1947, he passed away on May 30, 1998.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Shirley and Andy Pag Ruscitti of Campbell; two granddaughters, Andrea Ruscitti of Campbell and Michelle (Greg) Maglis of Mineral Ridge; three great-granddaughters, Isabella, Teagan Tiki and Aubrey; three brothers, Milan (Gracie) Stipitich of Hubbard, Louis Stipitich and Thomas (Betty Jean) Stipitich, both of Struthers; and one sister, Betty (Bert) Catignani.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five brothers, John, George, Paul, Joseph and Matthew; and three sisters, Mary Gallo, Ann Sorokas and Helen Karsnak.

Pamela M. Simione, 39
BOARDMAN Pamela M. Simione, 39, passed away Sunday afternoon at the Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pam was born Oct. 22, 1969 in Youngstown, a daughter of Gerald and Barbara Opencar Ross.
She was a 1989 graduate of Chaney High School, and worked as a bookkeeper for Community Correction Association for over 14 years. Pam was a member of the First Covenant Church in Boardman.
Her greatest accomplishments were her marriage and motherhood. She pursued these dreams as vigorously as her battle with cancer. Her favorite time was spent with her kids in the sun, at the ocean. Pam always believed God never gives you more than you can handle. She and her family believed the day she went to live with Jesus in Heaven was a day of celebration.
Besides her father, Gerald Ross of Youngstown, she leaves her husband, Donald Simione, whom she married Sept. 7, 1996; her daughter, Brianna Simione and her son, Nicholas Simione, both at home; two brothers, Jerry Ross of Youngstown and Frank Ross of Campbell; her grandmother, Mary Ross of Campbell; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Diane and Tony Villanueva of Boardman and Anna and Ed Pence of Austintown; two brothers-in-law, Bob and his wife, Chris Simione of Lowellville and Brian Simione of Youngstown; four nieces and nephews; and one great-nephew.
Besides her mother Barbara, whom she lost to cancer and missed so very much, Pam was preceded in death by three grandparents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Covenant Church in Boardman with Pastor Thomas Sharkey officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

Claire A. Trebella, 54
YOUNGSTOWN Claire A. Trebella, 54, passed away Saturday morning, April 18, 2009, at Hospice House in Poland Township.
Claire was born Sept. 19, 1954 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Lewis and Jennie Colonna Trebella, and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a 1972 graduate of Chaney High School and was the owner-operator of the Albellas Pizza Shop on Mahoning Avenue on Youngstowns west side.
Claire enjoyed cooking, loved animals of all kinds, especially horses, and had a special bond with her former dog, Happy, and her current dog, Spaz. Claire also enjoyed the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she shared many fun and creative activities.
Claire leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie (Hamner) Gulfo and Kevin Gulfo of Canfield; two grandchildren, Madison Jean and Anthony; and her brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Scharlane Trebella of Youngstown.
Claire will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Elwert A. Whiteside, 94
CORTLAND Elwert A. Whiteside, 94, passed away at 12:17 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Elwert was born in Hubbard on April 26, 1914, the son of the late Crawford and Mary Olive (Frow) Whiteside.
Elwert served our country in the United States Army during World War II, being honorably discharged in 1943. He graduated with a bachelors degree in 1949 from Youngstown College. Elwert worked as the busing supervisor for Lakeview and Howland Local School Districts. He was a member of the Cortland Christian Church. He enjoyed bowling every Monday at Echo Lanes, he was an extensive traveler; was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 295, Odd Fellows, and American Legion Post 540. He also enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
He married his wife, the former Grace Payne, on May 17, 1942. Grace preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 1984.
Elwert is survived by his two children, John E. (Nancy) Whiteside of Yakima, Wash. and Carol (Anthony) Schiavone of Vienna; grandchildren, Eric, Cathy, Chris, Jackie and Sal; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace; and his siblings, Marvin Whiteside and Roberta Snyder
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Cortland Christian Church.
The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. A Masonic Service will be held at 5:45 p.m.
