Kathryn A. Beggs, 86

POLAND TOWNSHIP – A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Wednesday at Fellows Riverside Garden, the rose garden at Mill Creek Park, for Kathryn A. Beggs 86, who passed away Sunday evening at Briarfield at Ashley Circle Care Center.

Kathryn was born July 10, 1922 in St. Louis Mo., the daughter of James Edward and Grace (McGee) Hamilton.

She was a graduate of Poland Seminary High School, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Kathryn was a charter member of the Poland United Methodist Church, where she was very active. She was a member of several clubs within the church, several nature clubs, and enjoyed watching birds.

Her husband, Howard B. Beggs, whom she married Jan. 31, 1943, passed away March 30, 1974.

Kathryn leaves a daughter, Sandra Melonio of Providence R.I.; one son, Mark Hamilton Beggs and his wife, Jan of Hollywood Fla.; one son-in-law, Richard Artman of Hollywood Fla.; and three grandchildren, Jodi Beggs, MaryKathryn Cancilliere and her husband, Michael F. and C. Matthew Melonio and his wife, Michelle. Kathryn also leaves four great-grandchildren, Michael Henry, Sophia Katarina, Andrew Graysen and Owen Joseph.

Besides her parents and husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by a son, Brian Howard Beggs; and two sisters, Dottie Lou Hamilton and June Bare.

Ronald Bissett, 69

BOARDMAN – There will be a funeral service held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman with Pastor Kelly Marshall officiating for Ronald Bissett, 69, who passed away April 26, 2009, with his loving family and friends by his side after a courageous seven month battle with cancer.

Ronald will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born May 14, 1939 in Sligo, Pa. and moved to the Youngstown area in 1950. He was the son of Edward M. and Dorothy A. (Kifer) Bissett.

John was employed with the Youngstown Board of Education as a custodian for 32 years and retired in 1988.

John was a 1957 graduate of North High School, attended Youngstown State University, and then graduated from the New Castle School of Trades.

He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church and their Men’s Club, where he enjoyed helping make chili, along with being an usher.

John was a member of the Mahoning Valley Old Car Club, Youngstown Men’s Bowling League, and the Senior Mixed League at Camelot Lanes.

He was an avid bowler and received a perfect 300 game ring and watch on April 22, 1997, and on Dec. 6, 1999, he bowled a game of 279 pins and had a series 720 game.

John passions were working around his home, antique cars, NASCAR, and his beloved dog, Coco.

He leaves behind to hold on to his precious memories his wife of over 45 years, the former Rose Marie Zitto, whom he married July 13, 1963; a sister, Norma Perov of Rensselaer, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Annette (John) Ragan of Youngstown; lifelong friends, Charles (Sharyn) Kennedy of Struthers; loving nieces and nephews, Debbie Lewis, Jeff (Charlene) Perov, Darlene Ingram, Donna Sue Perov, Marianne (Shawn) Donley, JoAnn Ragan, John Anthony Ragan (fiancé Kalah), Todd (Wendy) Kennedy and Beth (Max) Fightmaster; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman and on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman.

Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Lisa Catherine Blake

DIAMOND – A funeral service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Lisa Catherine Blake, who passed away Wednesday from a gas leak at her home with her husband.

Lisa was born Jan. 29, 1959 in Cleveland, the daughter of Edward E. and Sandra Jane Salter Harris.

Lisa was a clerk/train dispatcher for CSX Transportation for 23 years.

She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and loved animals.

Her husband Stephen “Stu” Donald Blake, whom she married June 17, 1989, passed away April 22, 2009.

Lisa leaves her mother, Sandra Jane Harris of Lisbon; two daughters, Emily Sandra Blake of Salineville and Melissa Nicole Riggs of Canfield; a stepdaughter, Shauna Irene Blake of Norwalk; a son, Jonathan Kingsley Gahagan of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a brother, Kingsley Edward Harris of Youngstown.

Lisa was preceded in death by her father.

Stephen “Stu” Donald Blake

DIAMOND – A funeral service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Stephen “Stu” Donald Blake, who passed away Wednesday from a gas leak at his home with his wife.

Stephen was born Sept. 28, 1957 in Ireland, the son of Richard P. and Pamela Butler Blake.

Stephen was a signalman for CSX Transportation for 12 years.

His wife, the former Lisa Catherine Harris, whom he married June 17, 1989, passed away April 22, 2009.

Stephen leaves two daughters, Emily Sandra Blake of Salineville and Shauna Irene Blake of Norwalk; a stepdaughter, Melissa Nicole Riggs of Canfield; a stepson, Jonathan Kingsley Gahagan of Indianapolis, Ind.; two brothers, Patrick and David; and two sisters, Carol and Jane.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard.

Frank "Buck" Chuchalk, 91

LAKE MILTON – Frank “Buck” Chuchalk, 91, passed away peacefully Monday morning, April 27, 2009, at his home.

Born Aug. 30, 1917 in Alliance, Buck was the son of Hungarian immigrants Frank and Mary (Ferris) Chuchalk.

A 1935 graduate of Palmyra High School, Buck was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served our country during Word War II. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to the Lake Milton area, where he went on to become an electrician. He retired from U.S. Concrete Pipe after more then 30 years with the company and was also the sole proprietor of Bucky’s Electric for many years.

Buck was a dedicated lifetime member of the American Legion Post 737 in Lake Milton, serving as past Commander and 9th district past Commander. He was an extremely active and a devoted member of Post 737’s Military Honor Guard.

Buck gave tirelessly of his time to honor fallen soldiers from both the Vietnam and Iraq wars, performing military honors at the Rittman National Cemetery. He was also a member of the AMVETS Post 112 and VFW Post 3332 in Newton Falls.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Evelyn June (Snyder) Chuchalk, whom he married Aug. 31, 1946 and shared 62 years of marriage; two daughters, Denise Chuchalk of Warren and Susan Colosimo and her fiance ’, Bill Locke of Lake Milton; a son, Terry M. Chuchalk of Lake Milton; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Suzanna Mizer of Rootstown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Exline; a grandson, Ricky James Hornof; three brothers; five sisters; and a son-in-law, Joseph Colosimo.

Family and friends may visit Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

The Revs. Timothy and Jeannie Balentine will officiate a funeral service on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

Burial will be held at Palmyra Cemetery, where full military honors will be observed.

Susannah (Beatty) Craft, 76

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be funeral services at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman for Susannah Craft, 76, who passed away early Monday morning, April 27.

Susannah was born Nov. 7, 1932 in Brookfield, Pa., the daughter of Albert and Sarah Lucille Beatty.

She was employed at Kings Motel and A-Plus Cleaning. She enjoyed playing bingo, fishing and camping.

Her husband, Joseph W. Craft Sr., whom she married Dec. 31, 1951, passed away Nov. 30, 2007.

She will always be remembered by her three children, Joseph W. Jr. (Sue) Craft, Cathryn Craft and Caren (Fred) Craft; eight grandchildren, William (Suzanne) Craft, John (Angela) Lattyak, Carrie (Bill) Lattyak-Johnston, Teddy Grzejka, Lexa Sue Craft, Paul Craft, Joseph W. III (Danielle) Craft and Crystal (Rene) Craft; 11 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Joann Craft.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Susannah and Terri Jo Craft; a son, Paul Eugene Craft; and a brother, John Alfred Beatty.

Alma Crittenden, 74

POLAND – Alma Crittenden, 74, of Poland, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the Hospice House.

Mrs. Crittenden was born Feb. 13, 1935 in Poland, the daughter of Ralph and Gladys Grossen Marquis.

She was a 1953 graduate of Struthers High School, where her extracurricular activities included singing in the choir, playing basketball and volleyball, and she was a member of the Y-Teens.

Mrs. Crittenden worked as a head cook for the Poland School District for 25 years, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed the school parties and annual luncheons they would have around Christmas and in the spring.

She was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Poland and its Ladies Sewing Circle and Seniors Luncheon Group, Just Friends. Mrs. Crittenden enjoyed bowling and played on numerous leagues including the Neighborhood Bowling League and the Lutheran League. Her biggest enjoyment was spending time with her family and traveling to visit with her children and grandchildren.

She leaves her husband, Lester Crittenden Jr., whom she married Aug. 18, 1954; four sons, Lester (Patty) Crittenden III of Columbiana, Tom (Pauline) Crittenden of Elizabethtown, Ky., Tim (Evon) Crittenden of Williamsburg, Va., and Jerry (Jacci) Crittenden of Bloomington, Ill.; two brothers, Gilbert (Peg) Marquis of Columbus and Gerald “Joe” Marquis of Boardman; and nine grandchildren, Krystle, Kylee, Nicole, Danny, Jessica, Brian, Sammi, Allison and Tyler Crittenden.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be no calling hours or services.

Charles Democko, 80

STRUTHERS – Charles Democko, 80, of Struthers, died Sunday afternoon at the Hospice House.

Mr. Democko was born April 19, 1929 in Struthers, a son of Paul and Catherine Turchan Democko. He was a lifelong resident of Struthers.

He was a 1947 graduate of Struthers High School and received his gemologist certificate from the Gemologist Institute of America in Santa Monica, Calif. Mr. Democko co-owned and was president of D&S Diamond Specialist Inc. in Boardman for 40 years, retiring in 1991.

Mr. Democko was a member of the GCU and was an avid golfer. He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and a former member of St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell. He was a loving father and grandfather.

Besides his wife, the former Evelyn Dorothy Ceplece, whom he married July 8, 1950, he leaves two daughters, Karen (Timothy) Munroe of Poland and Christine (William) Reimann of San Antonio; three sons, Charles Democko of San Francisco, Richard (Kim) Democko of Hubbard, and Philip Democko of Struthers; two sisters, Sophie Savikas of Tallahassee, Fla. and Marion Dzurnak of Villa Marie, Pa.; two brothers, Steve Democko of Struthers and Robert J Democko of Boardman; and eight grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Mr. Democko was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Savasko and Margaret Dobos; and three brothers, Joseph, Paul, and John Democko.

Services will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers, with Fr. Kevin Peters officiating. Interment will follow at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

Frederick Lee “Stub” Edwards, 75

NEW MIDDLETOWN – Frederick Lee “Stub” Edwards, 75, formerly of Deposit, N.Y., passed away April 24, 2009 at his home, where he had moved to be near his children.

He was born July 10, 1933 in Deposit, the son of William Frederick Edwards and Gladys Fuller Edwards.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He worked for many years for Allied Chemical and eventually retired as a superintendent from MDF in Deposit.

He is survived by two daughters and two sons and their spouses, Debbie and Duke Wheeler of New Castle, Pa., Kathy and Dominick Mioni of Enon Valley, Pa., Jeff and Sherry Edwards of Piffard, N.Y. and Mike and Michelle Edwards of Youngstown; eight grandchildren; and his extended family.

Fred was a member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Deposit. He had served as a member of the Village of Deposit Board. He very much enjoyed being active with the Deposit Senior Citizens Center and helping the Deposit Foundation, by serving as one of their drivers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at the Deposit First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Eileen Sloth, pastor of the church, officiating.

Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Zacharias Funeral Home, 78 Second St., Deposit, NY 13754.


Lucy M. Gabriel, 82

YOUNGSTOWN – Lucy M. Gabriel, 82, died Monday.

She was born Feb. 26, 1927 in Youngstown, a daughter of Lebanese immigrants, Thomas and Frieda (Rezek) Gabriel.

Lucy was a lifelong resident of the East Side and attended Sacred Heart School and St. Stephen’s Church. Lucy was a member of St. Maron Church and the St. Tobias Society and a former member of the 25 Club of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon.

Lucy worked at Superior Aluminum and liked to garden. She especially liked dancing at the Petri Club and Avon Oaks.

She was the family caregiver, taking care of her mother and father while they lived, and her brothers and sisters and their families as needed.

The family included nieces, Cathy Aigner and Sherry Johnson and a host of other nieces and nephews. She cherished them all.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a twin sister, Bonnie; five brothers, Joseph Gabriel, Paul Gabriel, George Gabriel, Shamp Gabriel and Mack Gabriel; and two sisters, Helen Ballabon and Mary Nofel.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 30, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road, followed by Mass at 11 a.m.

Donations may be made to St. Maron Church.

Mary Carmel Gross, 80

BOARDMAN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Philip Rogers at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Church, for Mary Carmel Gross, 80, who passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon at Shepherd of the Valley with her family at her side.

She was born May 9, 1928 in Lowellville, a daughter of Frank and Mary Luscre Reale.

She was a faithful member of the church for 47 years, where she served as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound. She was a member of the Ladies Guild, the Mission Circle, and served with her husband as a sponsor couple for those engaged to be married. She enjoyed craft making, especially crocheting. Mary was employed at West Boulevard Elementary and Glenwood Middle Schools as a cafeteria aide and in maintenance.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Peter J. Gross, whom she married on May 12, 1956. They enjoyed dancing, bus trips and traveling together; her two daughters, Cynthia Ann (Walter) Flory of Canton and Kathleen Wiseman of Pittsburgh; a son, Peter (Mary Ann) Gross Jr. of Youngstown; two sisters, Julia Kepp of Lorain and Jacqueline Softich of Struthers; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Reale.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home, and 10 to 10:30 Thursday at St. Charles Church.

Internment will be at Lake Park Cemetery

Benjamin L. Heyman, 89

SUNRISE, FLA./YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Children of Israel Cemetery Chapel for Benjamin L. Heyman, 89, of Goleta Avenue, who died Sunday in Sunrise.

Mr. Heyman was born Jan. 22, 1920 in Youngstown, a son of Sam and Tillie Fleisher Heyman.

He was a 1938 graduate of East High School, where he played football and was inducted in 1970 to the Hall of Fame. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European Theatre.

Benjamin was a truck driver and shipper, employed by Feldman Brothers Produce, retiring in 1980.

Mr. Heyman was a member of Children of Israel Synagogue, Mended Hearts and the Hall of Fame Committee of East High School. He was also active at the Jewish Community Center, where he played racquetball and handball.

He is survived by his wife, the former Esther Feldman, whom he married in 1949; a son, Mark Allen Heyman of Liberty; two daughters, Toby (Bill) Rosenberg and Lori (Martin) Simon, both of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren, Jordan Rosenberg and Nicole and Luci Simon.

Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Heyman; three sisters, Sarah Schwartz, Esther Lubetsky and Ruth Stormwind; and a granddaughter, Kari Joyce Rosenberg.

Friends may call from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, one half hour before service, at the cemetery chapel.

Contributions may be made to Children of Israel, NA’AMAT USA or Kari J. Rosenberg Scholarship Fund at Ohio University.

Mildred Hunter, 68

YOUNGSTOWN – A funeral service will be at noon on Thursday at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church for Mildred Hunter, 68, who departed this life Friday, April 24, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Hunter was born May 10, 1940 in Cabarrus County, S.C., a daughter of Leroy and Lillie Moore Bolder.

Mrs. Hunter was a supervisor at the former Little Forest Nursing Home and a member of the church.

Her husband, Willie J. Hunter, whom she married June 4, 1966, died Aug. 13, 2001.

She leaves a daughter, Crystal (Alton) Marshall of Mobile, Ala.; a brother, Paul (Elva) Bolder of Youngstown; grandchildren, DeNae J. and Aleigha C. Marshall; a uncle, Tom Moore; aunts, Betty Griffin and Anne Bush, all of Youngstown; a nephew, Paul (Tammi) Bolder II; and a great-nephew, Paul Bolder III.

Besides her parents, her aunts, Nell and Rachel Moore; and uncles, Ralph and J.W. Moore, preceded him in death.

Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc.

Elizabeth Ann “Bette” Irwin, 86

WESTERVILLE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Terrence Hazel at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Saint Michael Church for Elizabeth Ann Irwin, 86, formerly of Canfield.

She was born in Youngstown on Sept. 16, 1922, to parents Thomas A. Jones and Elizabeth J. Kohler, and died Saturday, April 25, at her son Michael’s home in Westerville.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, John Robert Irwin of Canfield, a veteran of WWII; and her brother, Thomas Jones, a member of the Curbstone Coaches and the Ohio Golf Hall of Fame.

She leaves her five children, Susan E. White of Santa Barbara, Calif., John Robert and Michael of Westerville, Betty Lynn Bobel (Don) of Dublin and Nancy Irwin-Kuhns (Ron) of Sunbury; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Tatum Danhauer (Laura) of Santa Barbara, Joshua R. Irwin of Bonita Springs, Fla., Kathleen E. Henry (Justin) of Pataskala and John R. Irwin IV of Westerville; three great-grandchildren, Reese and Lane Danhauer and Tyler Lynn Henry; two sisters, Rosemary Lyden and Dorothy Mae Ficocelli; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Irwin was the owner of Sherry’s Style Salon in Youngstown, and was responsible for producing hundreds of style shows over a span of nearly 40 years. She studied at Darvas School of Art in Cleveland after graduating from Ursuline High School. She was an accomplished oil and water color artist. She and her husband were longtime members of Tippecanoe Country Club.

Bette, as she was known to family and friends, enjoyed a good sense of humor, dancing, entertaining, playing golf, painting and quilting. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother, wife, sister and friend.

Richard E. “Rick” Johnson, 62

KINSMAN – Richard E. “Rick” Johnson, 62, passed away Monday, April 27 at UPMC Greenville Hospital after an extended illness.

Rick was born May 31, 1946 in Youngstown, the son of Norton “Gus” and Irene (Phillips) Johnson.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Rick served on the U.S.S. Elkhorn, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Four Mile Run Christian Church.

Besides his wife, the former Genevieve “Genny” McGraw, whom he married July 16, 1966, Rick leaves two children, Richard E. Johnson Jr. of Mecca and Amy Jean Fife of Andover. He also leaves four grandchildren, Samantha Anne, Clara Mae, Wyatt Lee and Kerri Lynn.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be held at Garden Brook Banquet Center, 4820 state Route 5 N.E. in Cortland on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Hugh Gillmer Kroehle, 78

WARREN – Hugh Gillmer Kroehle, 78, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at home following a short illness surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 15, 1930 in Cleveland, the son of Ralph and Marion Gillmer Kroehle, and was a lifelong resident of Trumbull County.

He was an expert on classic automobiles and was an avid admirer of antique cars, car models, trains and car literature.

A graduate of the University School in Cleveland and Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., Mr. Kroehle served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his Army service, he worked for General Fireproofing in Boston, where he met his bride of 49 years, Lida McMahon.

Upon his return to Warren, he became the vice president of Peerless Electric Company and worked in the investment field. His love of cars led to the founding of Kroehle Lincoln-Mercury in Youngstown, Shenango Lincoln-Mercury in Sharon, Pa., and Sunshine Ford in Benson, Ariz.

Mr. Kroehle was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a number of organizations and clubs including the Buckeye Club, the Trumbull County Historical Society and the Trumbull Country Club. A great philanthropist, he was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Ralph and Marion Gillmer Kroehle Foundation and a founding member of the National Packard Museum.

Surviving are his wife, Lida McMahon Kroehle, whom he married Aug. 15, 1959; three children, Karin Kroehle Ferrell of Mentor, Kimberly Kroehle (Joseph) Opauski of Sykesville, Md. and Keith (Elaine) Kroehle of McDonald; four grandchildren, Samantha Gillmer Ferrell, Samuel Theodore Kroehle, Katherine Lida Opauski and Natalie Grace Opauski; and a sister, former Trumbull County Commissioner and State Representative, Margaret Kroehle Dennison.

Preceding him in death are his parents and a brother, David G. Kroehle.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. N.E., Warren, OH 44483, with the Rev. Donna L. Maree officiating.

Interment will take place at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to the National Packard Museum, 1899 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren, OH 44483.

Thomas Korby List, 78

“Together Again”

BOARDMAN – Thomas Korby List, 78, died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Boardman Campus, Monday, April 27, 2009.

Thomas was born on Oct. 17, 1930 in Lowellville, the son of August J. and Mary A. (Korby) List.

Thomas was a 1948 graduate of Lowellville High School and later served in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from Fithian Construction as a machine operator in 1994.

Thomas married Etta Rosetta Wright “Zette” on April 10, 1958. Etta died Sept. 29, 1979.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda J. (Sebastian) Rucci of Poland; stepdaughter, Susan R. (Matt) Rhoads of Struthers; and seven grandchildren, Michelle, Angela and Victoria Rucci of Poland, Joshua Rhoads of New Castle, Jonathan Rhoads of Struthers and Daniel and Angela Monico of Struthers.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife and 13 brothers and sisters.

Calling hours are Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon with the funeral service at noon at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.

Wayne Wesley McCauley, 82

EAST PALESTINE – Wayne Wesley McCauley, 82, of East North Avenue, a son of Sherman and Bertha Haupt McCauley, was born Dec. 22, 1926 in East Palestine.

He passed away Sunday evening at the Hospice House in Poland, where he had been a patient since Friday.

He had served in the U.S. Army and had been employed for 46 years with the former Penn Central, and its successor, ConRail, as a supervisor at the C & S Conway Yards, and later as a construction superintendent with Signals.

Wayne was a life resident of the East Palestine community and was a member of the American Legion Post 31, as well as the First Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir, as well as serving as a director. He was a former member of the East Palestine Council, where he served for 10 years.

His hobbies included his four sons, his grandchildren and traveling.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, the former Sally Reed, whom he married Aug. 14, 1954. He also leaves his sons, James P. McCauley and Wayne D. McCauley, both of East Palestine and Thomas and William McCauley, both of Boardman. In addition, he leaves seven grandchildren, Wayne F. of East Palestine, Lindsey of Columbiana and Shawn of Concord, N.C., James W. and Leann, both of Elmira, N.Y., Brady McCauley of Boardman and Michael of Beaver Falls, Pa. and a great-grandchild, Tristan McCauley.

Three brothers, Sherman, Chuck, and Paul McCauley, as well as a sister, Kathleen, preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, with Robert Helbeck, of his church, officiating.

Burial will be at Glenview Cemetery.

Military rites will be conducted by the combined units of the American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4579.

Friends will be received at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The family has asked that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to MVI Hospice.      


Jean J. Miller, 77

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel for Jean J. Miller, 77, who died Saturday morning at Greenbriar Healthcare Center.

Jean was born May 8, 1931 in Elwood City, Pa. to the late Larry and Rosie (Carsele) Nash.

She worked for General Electric Trumbull Lamp Plant in Warren for over 30 years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Theresa Simko and Marlene White.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Robert) White of Boardman; son, Stan Miller of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Bernie, Martie, Bobby, Justin, Matthew and Joy Marie; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also leaves two sisters, Nancy (Jim) Vivo of New Middletown and Sandie Fogel of Pennsylvania; brothers, Eugene (Mary) Nash and Larry Nash, all of Pennsylvania; niece and nephew, Miracle (Mario) Petrino and Ernest Manauzzi, both of Boardman; and extended family.

Friends may call on Thursday one hour prior to the services, from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at St. John Cemetery.

Leo Nail, 67

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a funeral service held on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road in Coitsville, with Pastor Joseph Thomas officiating for Leo Nail, 67, who passed away on Friday evening, April 24, 2009.

Leo will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born Dec. 26, 1941 in Youngstown, the son of Leo A. and Frances (Caruso) Nail, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was employed with Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company for three years and then was employed with Lofaro Concrete Company for 30 years as a cement finisher, where Santie Lofaro was not only his father-in-law, but was also his best friend.

Leo was a 1959 graduate of East High School, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Santo Domingo. He was a squad leader for his company along with being part of the Special Forces Airborne Unit.

Leo always put the Lord as the center of his life and was an active member at the Victory Christian Center. He was involved in the choir, the street ministry, on the drama team, the Veteran’s Bible Study, and was active for the last 20 years in every production, but was most noted for his role as “Nick the Bartender” from A Wonderful Life.

Leo enjoyed playing the guitar, watching movies, and helping others, but he mostly loved just being around people.

He leaves behind to hold onto his precious memories, his wife of over 45 years, the former Sandra Lofaro, whom he married March 28, 1964; four children, Leo Charles Nail Jr., Annie M. (Ali) Omran and Debbie (Patrick) Gabrelcik, all of Youngstown and Connie K. (Joshua) Benner of Girard; 12 grandchildren, Katie and Jessica Nail, Brittany (Joshua) McGaffic, Patrick Jr., Kristen, April, Justen, Amanda, Johnathan, Amber and Ashley Gabrelcik and Isaac Benner; four great-grandchildren, Brandon, Arnie, Nicholas and Kaylee; along with his beloved dog, Bruno.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Ann Lofaro, whom he used to always call “Hey Ma.”

Friends may call on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman and on Thursday, April 30, 2009, from 10 a.m. until 10:50 a.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road on Coitsville.

Burial will take place at Lake Park Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Trumbull County American Legion.

Andrew J. “Andy” Nemeth, 79

BERLIN CENTER – Andrew J. “Andy” Nemeth, 79, passed away late Saturday evening.

He was born Jan. 19, 1930 in Youngstown, the son of Andrew and Maria Nemeth. Within months he and his family returned to Czechoslovakia, where he remained until the age of 19.

Upon returning to the United States, he met his beloved wife, Mary Ann Yuhas, whom he married April 14, 1951. Andy and Mary started a lifetime of memories and bore a family of five, Theresa (Chuck) Byer of Florida, Tom Nemeth, Rick Nemeth, Penny (Chris Gordon) of Colorado and Bob (Heather) Nemeth of South Carolina. Andy’s family continues to grow with grandchildren, Corey, Hope, Brandy, Breanne, Jamie, Colin and Rachel and great-grandchildren, Pacey, Alexa and Andi. He also leaves a brother, Paul in Slovakia.

Andy was preceded in death by his grandson, Andrew J. Byer.

Andy and Mary moved to Berlin Center in 1955, fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning his own farm. While working his farm, he retired from Giant Eagle in 1993, where he had been a meat manager. Andy loved being outdoors, enjoying nature and being on his tractor. He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and loved attending Mass.

Commemoration of Andy’s life will be held at St. Catherine’s at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

The family requests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to St. Catherine’s Church in Andy’s name.

Deborah Renee (Brummett) Skvarka, 46

WADSWORTH – Deborah Renee Skvarka (Brummett), 46, went to be with the Lord April 26, 2009.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Montrose Zion United Methodist Church, 565 N. Cleveland-Massillon Road in Akron, with the Rev. Dr. Walter S. Chisholm officiating.

Interment will be at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery.

Mary D. Turner, 94

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Mary D. Turner, 94, formerly of Rhoda Avenue on the city's West side, who died Saturday at Briarfield Manor.

Mary was born in Clearfield County Pa on Feb. 2, 1915 to Stephen and Mary (Kotulak) Korfant. The family later moved to Cleveland, where as a young woman she met and married her husband, Joseph Turner Jr. of Youngstown, who passed away Dec. 30, 1967. They moved to Youngstown in 1936.

Mary enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening, and playing cards. She was a member of the Pine Lee Garden Club of Poland and a member-at-large of the Garden Forum of Youngstown, and volunteered at the “old” Fellows Riverside Garden Center for many years.

Mary is survived by her sons, Joseph (Rita) Turner III of Spring, Texas and Russell Turner of Austintown; a daughter, Judith (Joseph) Pasquarella of Hubbard; a sister, Elizabeth Kalal of Strongsville; sister-in-law Alberta Korfant of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; her in-laws, Joseph and Theresa Turner; daughter-in-law, Linda Turner; brothers, John Kotula, Steve, Joseph, John, Michael and George Korfant; sisters, Margaret, Helen and Ruth Korfant; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and John Ashley; sister-in-law, Theresa Onda; and great-grandson, Nicholas Jankowski.

Friends may call Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Margaret Vanish, 93

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, followed by a church service at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine for Margaret Vanish, 93, who entered into rest Saturday evening.

Margaret was born on April 24, 1916 in Sharon, Pa., the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Sabol) Volkay.

She was a bookeeper for Fitzpatrick Department Store in Sharon, and Woolworth’s in Youngstown.

She belonged to the senior citizens at St. Charles. She was an avid fan of the Guiding Light soap opera, since days of radio. Margaret was known for her sense of humor and loved gatherings during the holidays with her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Margaret will be sadly missed by many, including her son, John (Betty) Vanish of Youngstown; daughter, Margaret (Jerry) Kovach of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Jeff (Carla) Kovach of Austintown and Diane (Todd) Robinson of Westerville; six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Amber, Haley, Zoey Kovach, Mackenzie and Chloe Robinson.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John Vanish, whom she married Nov. 1, 1942, and who died Sept. 12, 1974; five brothers, Paul, Michael, Joseph, William and Andrew Volkay; and two sisters, Anna Duran and Mary Mayernik.

Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m.

George Vuletich, 87

BOARDMAN – George Vuletich, 87, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 26, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 13, 1921 in Lowellville, a son of the late Mike and Ika (Mirich) Vuletich.

The husband of Ann (Faustino) Vuletich, whom he married June 21, 1958.

The family includes wife, Ann Vuletich of Boardman; daughter, Georgann and Larry Janovick of Boardman; son, Michael S. and Kim Vuletich of North Lima; and five grandchildren, Michael and Danny Janovick, Danielle, Nicholas and Christopher Vuletich.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Mary Vuletich; and brothers, Lou Stanick, Mike Stankovich, Pete Stankovich and Eli Vuletich.

He was a millwright at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, retiring after 36 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 247 in Lowellville for over 60 years. He was an avid bowler and sports fan. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Calling hours will be today, April 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 East Indianola Ave. in Youngstown.

His services will be at St. Dominic at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009.
