Angelo A. Aliberti, 74

NILES – Angelo A. Aliberti, 74, of 100 South Cleveland Ave., died at 9 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 1, 1934, in Pittsburgh, the son of Frank and Rose Vaccarelli Aliberti.

He was a 1952 graduate of Westinghouse High School and a graduate of Stenotype School in Pittsburgh.

Angelo was employed as a court stenographer for the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas for 30 years before retiring in 1997.

He attended Niles First United Methodist Church and enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.

His first wife, Anna Nardozzi Aliberti, whom he married Nov. 20, 1964, died April 30, 1992.

Angelo, who was loved by everyone and always did good deeds for others, will be deeply missed by his wife, Colleen Thornton Aliberti, whom he married Nov. 11, 1994; four sons, Frank Aliberti of Hickory, N.C., Jeff Aliberti and his wife, Julia, of Hickory, Michael Aliberti of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Philip Aliberti and his wife, Susan, of Bristolville; two brothers, Richard Aliberti and Frank Aliberti, both of Pittsburgh; a sister, Deanna DiNatale of Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren, Nicole Webster, Faith Aliberti and Philip A. Aliberti.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane DelDuca.

Private funeral services were held.

Jo Ann J. Crogan, 69

CANFIELD – Memorial Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Old North Church in Canfield for Jo Ann J. Crogan, 69, who passed away peacefully Sunday at Hampton Woods.

Jo Ann was born May 20, 1939, in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Eugene and Helen Mancino Malone.

She was a 1957 graduate of Ursuline High School, and in 1960 she received a Bachelors Degree and later a Masters Degree in Education from Youngstown State University.

Jo Ann was a grade school teacher at St. Charles, St. Patrick, and St. Rose Schools. She taught full-time until the birth of her children then became part-time volunteering and substituting. Jo Ann was a member of the Army Reserve Officers Association and the Ladies Axillary of P.H.C.C.

Her husband, Thomas W. Crogan III, whom she married Aug. 27, 1960, passed away Oct. 23, 2003.

Jo Ann leaves a daughter, Joann Crogan (Glenn)Rechtine of Rochester, N.Y.; three sons, Thomas (Terri) Crogan, Douglas (Karen) Crogan, and Brian (Rosie) Crogan all of Canfield; a sister Rose Marie Quinn of Glendale, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Kristi McMurray, Trever Crogan, Scott McMurray, Taryn Crogan, Lena Marie and Conor Crogan, Brian, Sean and Shannon Crogan.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Old North Church in Canfield.

Jo Ann’s family would like to thank the professional staff at Hampton Woods for their compassionate and personal care during her stay.

Robert B. Duke Jr.

YOUNGSTOWN – Robert B. Duke Jr., 66, of 447 Cohassett Dr., departed this life Thursday, April 30, 2009, at 10:58 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

He was born January 30, 1943, in Campbell, the son of Robert Bell and Rose Marie Pierce Duke Sr.

Mr. Duke was employed as a Deputy Sheriff for the Mahoning County Sheriffs Department for 27 years, last working at the Juvenile Justice Center (15 years), before retiring in December of 2005. He also worked security for eight years at Rayen, Wilson and Chaney High Schools and Northside Hospital, and was a former Truck Driver for the Youngstown Street Dept. for 11 years.

He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, the Masons, past member of the Black Knights and a strong supporter of many social groups in the community, including all his wife’s clubs. Robert enjoyed cooking, fishing, working around the house and yard, traveling with friends and family night.

He was a 1962 graduate of South High School and had special training in Law Enforcement.

He married Fannie M. Brooks Duke Sept. 26, 1964.

Besides his wife of Youngstown, he leaves to mourn two sons, Robert B. Duke III and Rodney Brooks Duke, both of Youngstown; one daughter, Nila Marie (Louis “Skip”) Edwards of Canfield; one brother, George Harper (Rose) Duke of Norfolk, Va.; three sisters, Juanita Byrd of Youngstown, Lateefa (Patricia) Palmer of Bronx, N.Y., and Patricia Ann (Keith) Lindsey of Leesburg, Va.; four grandsons, Rydell B. Duke (whom he helped raise) of Youngstown, Devante S. Lemon, Aaron S. Edwards and Taylor A. Edwards, all of Canfield; one aunt, Alma (JW) Revis of Youngstown and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Azeeza Duke, and nephew, Jamal Duke.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church. Friends may call one hour prior to service.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church.

Burial will be at Tod Homestead Cemetery.

Professional services of comfort were handled by the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Home in Youngstown.

Lenora M. Guy, 83

CHAMPION – Lenora M. Guy, 83, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 3:30 a.m. at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

She was born July 26, 1925, in Dayton, the daughter of the late Lee and Tressa M. Hull Sassmanhausen.

Lenora graduated from Grosse Point High School in Michigan and was employed for a little while at Packard Electric in Warren. She was active in various different church functions at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she was a member.

In addition to her husband, Ralph Guy, whom she married on June 22, 1946, Lenora is survived by two sons, Rick (Joann) Guy of Champion and Gerald (Joanne) Guy of Palm Coast, Fla.; one daughter, Sandra (John) Bates of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dee Emmert will officiate the service.

Burial will be at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Elyria.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 140 Cherry St. NW, Warren, OH 44485.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home in Warren.

Ronald M. Harker Sr., 72

HINESVILLE, GA. – Ronald M. Harker Sr., 72, died Friday, May 1, 2009, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Ron was born on March 4, 1937 to the late Roy Matthew and Olive Himes Harker.

He spent his childhood and much of his young adult life in Altoona, Pa., before moving to North Jackson in 1966.

Ron retired from General Motors in 1986, with 30 years of service.

In 1998, Ron moved to Georgia, where he married Maxine W. Harker, and spent the past eleven years.

Ron loved helping others and any outdoor activity imaginable. His favorite hobbies included camping, hunting, motorcycling and spending time with his two shiatsus.

In addition to his parents, his first wife, Wanda Harker, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine W. Harker of Hinesville; five children and their spouses, Jeffery Harker (Kandi) of Deerfield, Charlene Vega of Youngstown, Sheila Hoffman (Ricki) of Columbiana, Richard Harker Sr. (Jennifer) of Newton Falls and Ronald M. Harker Jr. (Bridget) of North Jackson; one brother, James Harker of Blue Knob, Pa.; three stepchildren, Charles M. Phillips of Townsend, Ga., Gail Phillips of Shell Point, Ga. and Susan M. Phillips of Longboat Key, Fla.; and twelve grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Carter Funeral Home, Oglethorpe Chapel.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at the Carter Funeral Home, Oglethorpe Chapel.

Burial will be private.

Marjorie Huzjak, 79

AUSTINTOWN – Marjorie Huzjak, 79, passed away Saturday morning, May 2, 2009, following a brief illness.

Marjorie was born Aug. 24, 1929, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Myron and Nellie Walker Newman, and was a lifelong area resident.

Marjorie leaves two daughters, Debra Huzjak and Janet M. Huzjak, both of Austintown; and a sister, Alice Dyce of New Middletown.

A sister, Delores Horvath, is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where funeral services will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.

Dolores L. Kennedy, 80

POLAND – Dolores Louise Kennedy, 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at 7:30 a.m. with family by her side.

Dolores was born on Sept. 26, 1928, in Youngstown.

She was the daughter of Frank and Julia Brogley and a lifelong area resident.

Dolores was a graduate of Chaney High School.

She was treasurer for the Youngstown Vindicator Federal Credit Union for 30 years. She was also an administrative assistant for Monumental Insurance Agency for 10 years.

Dolores was a charter member of St. Christine’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed an active life with her family and friends, including participating in numerous card clubs and in water aerobics. Dolores was a founding member of the Kardettes.

Dolores is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jack Kennedy; a sister, JoAnn Maughan of Girard; four children, Bob (Barb) Kennedy of Coto de Caza, Calif., Sandy (Scott) Belliveau of Plainfield, Ill., Patty (J.P.) Fritz of Columbus and Ed (Linda) Kennedy of Hudson; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Dolores is preceded in death by her parents and her son, John.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home at 3100 Canfield Road in Youngstown.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 6 at 9:30 a.m. at The Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Christine’s Catholic Church in Youngstown.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road Poland, OH 44514.

Linda Ann Melia, 44

POLAND – Prayers will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church for Linda Ann Melia, 44, who passed away May 2, 2009 peacefully at her home.

Linda was born Oct. 19, 1964, in Youngstown, the daughter of Dominic and Elizabeth Herceg Melia.

Linda graduated from the Leonard Kirtz School in 1983. Then she attended Bev Road Work Shop for 14 years.

Linda attended Holy Family Church and Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine in North Jackson.

She loved to listen to music and enjoyed going out to dinner and movies.

Linda will be sadly missed by her parents, Dominic and Elizabeth Melia, with whom she made her home; aunts, uncles and cousins; and a special cousin and Godmother Peggy Bernat.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Rocco and Elizabeth Melia and Mark and Eleanor Herceg.

Martha J. Neumann, 90

BOARDMAN – Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Boardman United Methodist Church for Martha J. Neumann, 90. She passed away Sunday morning after a long illness.

Mrs. Neumann was born April 16, 1919, in Youngstown, a daughter of Harry and Margaret Whitehead Mathews.

She was a graduate of East High School.

She and her husband Bill were former owners of Neumann’s Dry Cleaners.

She was a member of Camelot Jester Bowling League, Lake Milton Boat Club, Saxon Club, Dry Cleaners Association of Youngstown, Mill Creek Chapter ABWA and of the church.

Her husband, William E. Neumann, whom she married July 14, 1943, died February 12, 1991.

Surviving her are three granddaughters, Tammie (Patrick) Osborne of New Jersey, and Kristie and Kerrie Ebert of Boardman; a great-grandson; a niece, Donna Ramsey, and nephew, Bill Bowser; a son in law, Thomas Ebert; and many other great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death, besides her husband, are her parents; a daughter, Karen J. Ebert; three sisters, Vera Hubbard, Beatrice Woods and Edna Wagner; a brother, James Mathews; two nieces, Elaine Larson and Margaret Ann Tesyk; and two nephews, Harold and Ronald Woods.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10 to 11am at the Church.

Phyllis J. Shipton, 85

YOUNGSTOWN – Phyllis J. Shipton, 85, of Omni Manor, died May 2, 2009, at the St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.

Mrs. Shipton was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Coitsville, a daughter of Charles and Mary Shields Deterding, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1941 graduate of Scienceville High School and attended Westminister College.

She was member of the Coitsville Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Shipton worked as a secretary for the Youngstown School System at Bennett Elementary School, retiring June 1, 1990, after 30 years. She was also a member of the Penn Ohio Horseman Association.

Her husband, Bert Shipton, whom she married Jan. 3, 1946, died March 28, 1991

Surviving are one daughter, Janet (Ralph) Morgan of Youngstown; one son, Charles “Sam” Shipton of New Middletown; one sister, Janet Ann Wire of Inverness, Fla.; three grandchildren, Amy Morgan, Sam Shipton and Christina Shipton; and three great-grandchildren, McKenna, Gavin and Jordan.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a stepmother, Florence Deterding; one sister, Marygale Rowles; and one brother, Charles Deterding.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland,

M. Helen Stewart, 84

YOUNGSTOWN – A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Beulah Temple United Holy Church for Mrs. M. Helen Stewart, 84, who departed this life Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Ron Joy Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stewart was born March 13, 1925, in Carrollton, Ga., a daughter of Roosevelt and Lillie Zachery Smith.

She had been a custodian for St. Brendan’s School. She was Deaconess, Mother, Financial Secretary and Secretary of the Foreign Mission, and a Sunday school teacher at the Beulah Temple United Holy Church. She was also instrumental in the organization of the Peoples Chapel Mission.

She leaves her children, Gwendolyn (Robert) Bush and Michael D. Stewart, both of Youngstown and Marion (Hazel) Stewart of Macon Ga.; a sister, Mildred Shaw of Youngstown; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Her parents; a son, Scottie Stewart; a daughter, Vonnie Reynolds; and a brother, Willie Smith, preceded her in death.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

Alice L. Summerill, 62

LONGVIEW, TEXAS – Friends and family are invited to attend a party in honor of Alice L. Summerill, 62. An informal lunch celebrating her life will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Bazetta Township Park, located on state Route 305.

Mrs. Alice Summerill died Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

Arrangements were made by the Sullivan-Heaster Funeral Home of Longview.

She was born May 23, 1946, to Edward and Alice Price in Warren.
