Earl Walter “Walt” Adams, 100

NORTH LIMA – Earl Walter “Walt” Adams, 100, died May 5, 2009 at Assumption Village.

Mr. Adams was born March 11, 1909 in Denver, a son of Walter and Rose Kepler Adams.

He graduated from Colorado School of Mines in 1932 with a degree in Metallurgy. After graduation, he went to work for the Homestake Mines in Lead, S.D. After that, he moved to Los Altos, Calif., where he began his 35 years with Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical. He helped to initiate the building and operation of several plants in California, Louisiana, Ohio and other areas of the country.

Mr. Adams was an accomplished woodworker and a watercolor artist. He was a member of the Honorary Scholastic Engineering Fraternity Tau Beta Pi. He was a former member of the Moravian Church of Lititz in Pennsylvania, where he and his wife lived before returning to this area in 1996.

He leaves his wife, the former Eleanor Roberts, whom he married June 15, 1957; his two daughters, Mariam Frenier of Morris, Minn. and Nancy Wilson of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Barbara Adams of Denver; four grandchildren, Kenneth Champagne, Catherine Cutrer, Jacquelyn Champagne and Eric Darce; and two nieces and two nephews in Denver.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Catherine Primm Adams.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.

Ruth M. Bartos, 76

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Matthias Church in Youngstown for Ruth M. Bartos, 76, who passed away Wednesday afternoon at her daughter’s home in Newton Falls.

Mrs. Bartos was born in Youngstown on Oct. 28, 1932, a daughter of Joseph and Lucille Hess Kosiba.

Ruth was a member of the Chaney High School January 1950 graduation class and was a lifelong area resident.

She was employed for 32 years as the secretary at St. Matthias School, retiring in 2003. An active member of St. Matthias Church, Ruth belonged to its Infant Jesus of Prague Guild, where she also held the office of secretary, and to the Golden Echoes. In addition, she was a member and president of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association Branch 161, as well as a member of St. Cecelia Jr. Branch 192. Ruth also belonged to the Boardman Seniors, the Lansingville Block Watch and the Hopefuls.

She enjoyed playing cards and played in two neighborhood clubs for more than 50 years.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Diane (Dave) Passmore of Newton Falls; her sons, Marty Bartos of Glendale, Ariz. and Jim (Dee) Bartos of Kenbridge, Va.; her brother, Dr. Raymond (Pat) Kosiba of Rockledge, Fla.; her brother-in-law, Edward Beil of Howland; and her six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bartos, whom she married Sept. 11, 1954, and died Nov. 17, 1986 and by her sister, Dorothy Beil.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., where a prayer service will be held at 4:45 p.m.

Frank J. “Bud” Dripps

FAIRBURN, GA. – Mr. Frank J. “Bud” Dripps passed away May 6, 2009.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leslie Dripps and is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Dripps of Fairburn, Melissa Lemaire and her husband, Arthur of Kannapolis, N.C.; grandchildren, Savannah and Sarah Lemaire; stepgrandson, Zack Adams; sister, Leona Jean Werner of Cloudland, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Cramer officiating.

Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park.

Marleen Hairston Johnson, 50

YOUNGSTOWN – Marleen Hairston Johnson, 50, formerly of Houston, passed away May 3, 2009 at Hospice House in Poland, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Marleen was born Nov. 17, 1958 in Mercer, W.Va., a daughter of Early and Gracie Boyd Hairston.

She was reared in Youngstown and was a 1977 graduate of The Rayen School. She moved to Houston and was a bus operator for 11 years for Houston Independent School District and was highly respected by her co-workers, peers and supervisors.

Ms. Johnson was baptized at an early age at the Tabernacle Baptist Church and she was affiliated with the Visionary Baptist Church in Houston.

She leaves her son, Olton Johnson III of Youngstown; two daughters, Traci N. and Shronda, both of Houston; two sisters, Carolyn Boyd of Roanoke, Va. and S. Gail Johnson of Youngstown; four brothers, Gerald (Anne) Johnson of Jamaica, N.Y., Eddie Hairston of Youngstown and Early and Melvin Johnson, both of San Jose, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Zapporah, Kayla, Demarcus, Cierria, Kallavon, Kierian and Kidrich; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends and special friend, Spanky.

She was preceded in death by her parents and aunt, Glenna Watkins, who reared her.

Marleen’s love for people and dedication motivated her to start a breast cancer awareness program at Butler Motor Pool. She facilitated information, monetary and mentally where needed. She believed and stood up for things done the right way and voiced her opinion when trying to make a point. She was a very funny, well-liked, loving person, that put a smile on a face in an instant.

Thanks to all that was there in her final hours.

Leta M. Kagy, 91

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – Leta M. Kagy, 91, died Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Brian Center in Waynesville. Formerly of Vernon Township and Orlando, Fla., Mrs. Kagy had lived in North Carolina with her daughter and son-in-law since 2003.

She was born Oct. 15, 1917 in Vernon, the daughter of Emmett “Ray” and Mildred (Davis) Diday.

Mrs. Kagy worked for a number of years at the Rexall Drug Store in Kinsman, the Peerless Electric Co. and J.C. Penney. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Waynesville and the VFW Auxiliary. Mrs. Kagy enjoyed reading and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Dale Kagy; a brother, Harold “Pete” Diday; and a great-granddaughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Leona Kagy Hughes of Waynesville; four granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St. in Kinsman, with Pastor Steve Taylor of the Waynesville Antioch Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Kinsman Cemetery.

Donald Robert Kirk, 89

Together Again

COLUMBIANA – Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Good Hope Lutheran Church for Donald Robert Kirk, 89, of St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center, formerly of Canfield, who died Wednesday morning at Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Don was born Oct. 22, 1919 in Poland, to the late Arthur and Lydia (Patrick) Kirk.

He attended Poland Seminary High School and was a member of the church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II and was proud that he was a paratrooper, serving in the 517th.

Don worked as a stationary engineer for 20 years at Youngstown Sheet and Tube from 1948 to 1968 and for Western Reserve Care System at Northside Hospital from 1969 until his retirement in 1985.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia F. (Watkins) Kirk, they married April 9, 1947 and she died Aug. 4, 2000; two sisters, Gladys Skurna and Edna Kemmis; and a brother, Clyde E. Kirk.

He is survived by four daughters, Linda (Keith) Duganne of Boardman, Ellen (Ronald) Aven of Haslett, Mich., Kathleen (Terry) Rudinsky of Columbus, Ind. and Saundra (Sherman) Martz of Canfield; two sons, Phillip and Robert Kirk, both of Austintown; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norrene Redman of Poland.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel. Friends may also call one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday morning.

Michael Kusalaba, 62

CANFIELD – Michael Kusalaba, 62, passed away late Tuesday afternoon, May 5, 2009, at Austinwoods Rehabilitation Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Michael was born Nov. 17, 1946 in Elvangen, West Germany, a son of Wasyl and Anna Kavesky Kucalaba, and came to America and Youngstown with his family as a child.

He was a 1964 graduate of Chaney High School, earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and an MBA from Youngstown State University, and was a board certified electrical engineer.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Mike worked for Ohio Edison / First Energy Corporation for over 30 years, starting in the engineering department, and retiring as a national account executive in marketing.

Mr. Kusalaba had a passion for the Youngstown area. He was very involved with, and served on the board of trustees of the CASTLO Community Development Improvement Corporation for 21 years, and served as chairman of the board for 10 years.

Mike was a member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Mr. Kusalaba leaves his mother, Anna Kucalaba of Youngstown; his brother, Raymond (Linda) Kucalaba of Canfield; his sister, Mary Ann (Vincent) Huwig of Alliance; seven nieces and nephews; and nine grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Mike will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

His father is deceased.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a prayer service will be held at 6 p.m.

Funeral services will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown.

Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.

Teresa R. LaMarr, 82

CANFIELD – Prayers will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Fox Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Brendan Church for Teresa R. LaMarr, 82, who passed away Wednesday morning at Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Mrs. LaMarr was born Oct. 15, 1926 in Youngstown, a daughter of Jacob and Veronica Carrabin Baluch and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1944 graduate of Chaney High School and had worked as a secretary in the Accounting Department for Automatic Sprinkler.

She was a devout Catholic and a member of Saint Brendan Church. Teresa enjoyed shopping, going to auctions and taking care of her daughter’s dogs, her “grandpups,” Mimi and Maddie.

Her husband, William K. LaMarr Jr., whom she married Aug. 6, 1949, died Oct. 24, 2003.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Joe Pisano, with whom she made her home in Canfield; a sister, Eleanor Belcik of Youngstown; a brother, Joseph Baluch of Indiana; a sister-in-law, Patty Abate of Youngstown;  special nieces and nephews, Robbie and Pete Joseph, Sis and Steve Wagner, Frank and Erika Belcik, Sandy and Sid Dabir, Patty and Rick Metzinger, Betsey and Mark Byce, Mike and Kathy Welsh, Moe and Bob Schrecengost, Patty and Joe Boland, Judi Baluck, Jayne Wilson and Cookie Herman; and her “special daughters,” Marge Kohl and Vicki Garland, who gave their special loving care to Teresa.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Pauline Baluch, Margaret Wilson, Helen Glaros, Julie Baluch and Vera Pappada; and a brother, Jack Baluch.

Phyllis Elaine Malone, 71

BROOKFIELD – Phyllis Elaine Malone, 71, died on Monday, May 4, 2009 at 5:05 p.m. at Hospice House in Poland after a brief illness.

Mrs. Malone was born in Sharon, Pa. on Aug. 2, 1937, a daughter of Louis T. and Stella (Pelc) Bell.

She was a 1955 graduate of Brookfield High School, and went on to marry Samuel Salvatore Malone on May 23, 1964 in Sharon. Together they would share 43 years of marriage.

Phyllis retired from Sawhill Tubular after working in the accounts receivable department for nine years. Prior to starting a family, Phyllis worked as a secretary at General American for 15 years. A part-time position at Rite Aid Pharmacy in Hermitage, Pa. was held later in her life.

She was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sharon. One of Phyllis’s passions in life was cooking for family and friends. Earlier in her life, Phyllis entered several of her recipes in cooking contests. For more than 54 years she relished her monthly gatherings with the members of BB Card Club. Phyllis took pleasure in gardening and planting flowers. Some of her most memorable experiences were trips to Italy, cruises to the Caribbean and family vacations to the East Coast. Above all, she loved her role as a dedicated mother, a loving wife, and a proud grandmother.

She is survived by her mother Stella Bell of Hermitage; her son, Christopher Malone and his wife, Victoria of Sharpsville, Pa.; her daughter, Nadine Malone of Brookfield; her sister, Beverly Joan Voyce of Joliet, Ill.; and by her two grandsons, Antonio Salvatore Malone and Dominic Angelo Malone; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and more recently by her husband on Aug. 3, 2007.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sharon.

Calling hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield.

Burial will be at Brookfield Township Cemetery.

As an expression of sympathy, the family suggests contributions can be made to the Humility of Mary Hospice House in Poland and the American Cancer Society.

Mildred Beatrice Marshall, 92

McDONALD – Mildred Beatrice Marshall, 92, died at her daughter’s residence in Howland on May 5, 2009.

Mrs. Marshall was born Jan. 17, 1917 in Farrell, Pa. She was the daughter of Robert G. and Beatrice R. Bowen Woods and came to this area in 1936.

She was a graduate of David Anderson High School in Lisbon. She worked at U.S. Steel-McDonald Works during World War II and later worked for the McDonald Grade School Lunch Program. She loved working in her flower garden, and enjoyed traveling and camping.

She was member of the Woodland Park United Methodist Church, McDonald Sr. Citizens, and a volunteer at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Niles, as well as a member of the McDonald Community Chest.

Her husband of 33 years, John, died July 20, 1979.

Mrs. Marshall leaves her daughter, Arlene Boozer of Howland; her two grandsons, Kevin Marshall of Yuma, Ariz. and Jeffery Marshall of Warren; and two great-grandsons, Joshua and Connor.

She also leaves a brother, Gilbert Woods of Williamsfield; one nephew, Gilbert Woods Jr. of Mineral Ridge; and two nieces, Patricia Gault and Cathy Woods; one great-nephew, Brandon Woods; three great-nieces, Sara (Woods) Gardner and Sophia and Anna Gault; along with two great-great-nieces, Katie and Ellie Gardner, all of McDonald. Mrs. Marshall also leaves her sons-in-law children, Lou Ann Torjusen of Norway, Randy Graham of Greenville, Pa., Vernon Boozer Jr. of Cleveland and Lynn Blohm of Prescott Valley, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her son, Brent; son-in-law, Vernon Boozer; and a great-grandson, Tyler; her sisters, Florence Antolini and Geraldine Noble; and brothers, Vernon and Robert Woods.

Services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Woodland Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. McHale officiating.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Amelia Matune, 82

AUSTINTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:45 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church for Amelia Matune, 82, who died Wednesday morning, May 6, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Boardman Campus.

She was born Oct. 21, 1926 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late John and Milka Rendulich Soski.

She was a 1944 graduate of The Rayen School and attended Youngstown State University. She worked as a sales audit supervisor for Strouss Department Store and later as a hostess at St. George’s Croatian Center.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church, St. George’s Croatian Home Lodge No. 66 and the Catholic Ladies Bowling League.

She is survived by two sons, John (Patti) Matune of Peninsula and James (Char) Matune of Canfield; a daughter, Barbara (Phil) Pabst of Austintown; two sisters, Catherine Banko of Austintown and Barbara Reen of McKinney, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Marijo Matune of Canfield; and eight grandchildren, Emily and Tyler Pabst, Nick, Jamie and Matt Matune and Kelly, Jennifer and Katie Flower.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Matune, whom she married Sept. 15, 1956 and who died April 17, 2000; a son, Mark; and a sister, Ann Vargo.

Mary Frances McEvoy, 80

YOUNGSTOWN – Mary Frances McEvoy, 80, died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Pembrooke Place in Youngstown.

She was born in Boston on April 5, 1929, the daughter of the late Eugene and Anna (Stack) Brady.

She worked at Schwebels Baking Co. for more than 20 years. She was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Boardman and the American Business Women.

She married Robert L. McEvoy on June 6, 1953; he passed away Nov. 3, 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Robert E. (Amy) McEvoy of Strongsville and Richard J. McEvoy of Poland; a daughter, Christine P. (Ted) Suszczynski of Hermitage, Pa.; four brothers, Eugene Brady and Richard Brady, both of Quincy, Mass., John Brady of Hingham, Mass. and James Brady of Atlanta; twelve grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McVean, Hughes & McClurkin Funeral Home, 711 Wick Ave. in Youngstown.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church in Boardman, with prayers at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

Roy R. Moore, 83

EAST PALESTINE – Roy R. Moore, 83, of 203 South St., passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 5, 2009, at his residence, following a brief illness. 

Roy was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Kealey, Pa., a son of the late Rollie and Flora O. Hacker Moore, and was a life resident of the community.

He had been employed as a boiler operator for 28 years with the City of East Palestine, and later at Ohio Edison - Penn Power, retiring in May of 1991. He was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran. 

He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church. 

His wife, the former Dorothy I. McIntosh, whom he married March 19, 1948, preceded him in death June 27, 1994. Two sisters had also preceded him. 

Roy is survived by three daughters, Diane L. (Deane) Crow of Salinas, Calif., Debbie L. (Randy) White of New Springfield and Darlene S. (Mark) Sutherin of East Palestine; six grandchildren, Robert R. Davis, Blaine K. Davis, Betsy M. Burns, Jesse J. Crow, John W. Jarvis Jr. and Eddie W. Hostetter Jr.; two step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves a sister, Ruth Ellsworth of Mt. Vernon, Wash. 

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Martin of his church officiating. Burial will follow at Glenview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Richard R. “Dick” Ragan Sr., 72

STRUTHERS – Services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church, both in Struthers for Richard R. “Dick” Ragan Sr., 72, who passed away Tuesday.

Richard was born July 24, 1936, in Youngstown, the son of Andrew and Catherine Brincho Ragan.

He graduated from Chaney High School in 1955 and attended Youngstown State University.

Richard married Donna E. Timarko on Nov. 16, 1957, and was married for 51 years.

He was a supervisor at Superior Industries and then at Easco Aluminum, retiring in 1991 after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Church.

Richard loved traveling and enjoyed his family immensely. He was an avid fan of Ohio State and Cleveland Browns football. He also enjoyed playing golf and bowling and going to the YMCA.

Richard will be sadly missed by his wife Donna; his son, Rick R. (Monica) Ragan Jr. of Lowellville; his grandaughter and pride and joy, Dana Dawn Ragan; his sister in-law, Bernice (Jerry) DiMarzio; and two nephews, Bobby and Danny Winkle.

Richard was preceded in death by his two sons, David G. and Thomas W. Ragan; his grandson, Joseph P. Healey; and sister, Margaret Winkle.

Ronald Oscar Shelton, 71

TAMPA, FLA. – Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home Inc. for Ronald Oscar Shelton, 71, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa.

Mr. Shelton was born Dec. 29, 1937 in Camden, N.J., a son of Richard N. and Pearl M. Conway Shelton.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for years, making it his career, and retired as a technical sergeant.

He was a graduate of East High School and received his associate degree in applied science in computer engineering technology from the National Education Center in Tampa.

He leaves his sister, Anne (Jesse) Rutland; three aunts, Lorene and Zelma Yancey and Alice Shelton, all of Youngstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Pearl M. Harris and Marva I. Shelton; and three brothers, Richard N. Jr., Clifford O. and Don A. Shelton.

POLAND – Phyllis S. Smith, 87, died Wednesday morning at Ivy Woods Manor in North Lima.

Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 15, 1922 in Charleston, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ralph W. and Gladys Wills Scott. She was raised in Youngstown and later resided in Struthers and Poland.

Mrs. Smith was a graduate of Wilson High School and was a homemaker. She attended the Struthers Presbyterian Church and was past PTA president of Lyon Plat Elementary School in Struthers.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed reading, history, antiquing, auctions, and knitting. Her biggest enjoyment centered around her family and home.

Her husband, William H. Smith, whom she married Feb. 24, 1943, died March 9, 1999. Mrs. Smith leaves one son, Ralph H. Smith of Warren; one daughter, Loralyn J. Burkey of Boardman; eight grandchildren, Traci (Tom) Dunning of Raeford, N.C., Shannon Smith of Chicago, Christopher (Ericka) Burkey of Beaver Falls, Benjamin Burkey of Struthers, Amy (William) Johnston of Columbiana, Matthew Burkey of Boardman, Amanda Burkey of Boardman, and Jennie McCoy of Kent; and seven great-grandchildren, Aislyn, Brandon, Jordan, Blake, Alaina, Carissa, and Joshua.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Pastor Dave Conrad officiating.

Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

Friends will be received Friday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Smith’s name to the Christian Children’s Fund that she supported for more than 30 years, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294

Anthony R. Sperati, 82

BOARDMAN – There will be funeral services at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 8, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Fata of St. Luke Church celebrating for Anthony R. Sperati, 82, who passed away Tuesday, May 5.

Anthony was born May 21, 1926 in Campbell, the son of Michael and Mary (DeFede) Sperati.

He was employed by the Youngstown Glove Company.

Anthony will always be remembered by his brother, Rocky (Patricia) Sperati of Girard; a sister, Ann Dittrich of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Victoria Houlihan.

Friends may call from 10:30 to 11 a.m. on Friday at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.
