Robert R. Baun, 74

AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Robert R. Baun, 74, who died Friday morning at his residence.

He was born Aug. 3, 1934, in Youngstown, a son of Russell W. and Eleanor (Mcanally) Baun, and he resided in this area all of his life.

He worked as a crane hooker for Youngstown Steel Door for 31 years before retiring in 1982. He had also worked as a custodian for the Austintown Local Schools for 13 years before retiring in 1997.

He was a longtime member of the Millcreek Baptist Church and most recently was a member of the Upper Room Ministries in Austintown.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren, and he loved the Lord with all of his heart.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Jacqueline Russell, whom he married Jan. 9, 1960.

He also leaves behind four children, William R. (Cindy) Baun of Boardman, Randi A. (Susan) Baun of Austintown, Linda Medlick of Austintown and Robert (Doreen) Baun of Claremont, N.C.; two brothers, Charles Baun and Thomas (Mary Lou) Baun, both of Austintown; a sister, Patricia Baun, also of Austintown; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Gary Patrick; and a sister, Rosemary Baun.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will take place Tuesday, preceded by a brief prayer service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to procession to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Robert’s memory to Hospice of the Valley.

Robert’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Valley, and especially his nurse, Cheryl, for all of the kind and compassionate care he received.

Winifred M. Brown, 86

NILES — Private services were held for Winifred M. Brown, 86, who passed away Friday morning at Humility House.

Winifred was born Nov. 20, 1922, in Austintown, the daughter of Van H. and Lorraine M. (Brickley) Gruber, and was a graduate of Fitch High School, class of 1940 and Youngstown Business School.

She worked in the offices of Isaly Dairy.

Her husband, Robert M. Brown, whom she married Dec. 29, 1949, passed away Nov. 10, 2006, after 57 years of marriage

Winifred leaves one son, Robert D. Brown of Austintown; three grandchildren, Robert Reno and Jennifer Reno, both of Atlanta, and Beau Brown of Austintown; and two great-grandchildren, Grace and Alice Reno of Atlanta.

Besides her parents and husband, Winifred was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Reno.

There were no calling hours.

Alice Cannistra, 81

COLUMBUS – Alice Cannistra, 81, formerly of McDonald, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Sunrise of Worthington in Columbus.

Alice was born in Tarentum, Pa., on April 21, 1928, the daughter of the late Steven and Mary Gazarik Bazala.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald and its Altar & Rosary Society, and a former legislative officer of the ITAM Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 3.

She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne (Larry) Lance of Columbus; a son, William J. (Mitzi) Cannistra of Lewis Center; a sister, MaryAnn Bubryckie of Illinois; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Cannistra, whom she married June 14, 1947, and who died Aug. 10, 2008; her sisters, Josephine Hill, Betty (Elizabeth) Palatella and Delores Reik.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Warren, preceded by a prayer service at the Blackstone Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Internment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to Odyssey Health Care (Hospice) or a food bank of your choice.


Emil C. Conte, 85

AUSTINTOWN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and prayers offered at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Emil C. Conte, 85, who passed away May 19, 2009, at Delray Beach Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla., with his family by his side.

Emil was born July 16, 1923, in Montaguto, Province of Avellino, Italy to the late Luigi and Clotilda (Iannarone) Conte. He immigrated to America as a child in 1930.

He was a graduate of Newton High School in Newton, Mass., and attended Northeastern University in Boston.

In 1950, Emil moved to Austintown, where he co-owned and operated Schiavone’s United Family Foods for more than 30 years. Upon retiring, he spent winters with his wife at their second home in Boynton Beach, Fla.

Emil was very active in his community. He was president of the Grocers Association and a member of the Jaycees, Kiwanis, the Eagles Club, ITAM, CFS, and UFF Grocers Co-op. A founding member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, he served as president of the Holy Name Society, was a church commentator, and served on the festival committee.

He also enjoyed bowling, bocce, and golf. Emil’s love of golf began as a caddy in Massachusetts and continued throughout his association with Tippecanoe Country Club in Canfield, where he earned many awards. He achieved his goal of a hole-in-one on June 29, 1988. His most enjoyable moments, though, were those spent with his family around the dinner table.

Besides his parents, Emil was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph and Joseph Conte.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Yole Milene Schiavone, whom he married Oct. 28, 1946; his daughters, Valerie Conte Cardiero (James O’Connor Jr.) of Canfield and Bedford, Mass., and Sheila Conte (Jack) Koontz of Austintown; granddaughters Camille Cardiero (Peter) Radvanyi, Allison Cardiero (Sal) Papalardo, Hillary Koontz and Lindsay Koontz; great-grandchildren Kailee, Olivia, Alexis, Dominic and Adriana Radvanyi and Sophia Papalardo; and a sister, Vincenza “Nancy” Conte (Joe) Mucci of Needham, Mass.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Roy N. Dell, 65

HUBBARD – Roy N. Dell, 65, died Saturday morning, May 23, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

He was born June 1, 1943, in Greenville, Pa., a son of James and Pearl Grady Dell, and had lived in Hubbard for 35 years.

Mr. Dell founded 3 D Dell Metal Polishing in 1984 and retired in 1996. He was a member of Andover Christian Church in Andover, where he made the tapes for their Outreach Ministry, served as an usher and was a member of the Wisdom Seekers Sunday school class. He was also a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, enjoyed spending time with his fishing buddies and served with the U.S. Marine Corps.

He leaves his wife, the former Helen J. Bruce, whom he married Jan. 21, 1966; one son, Bruce E. Dell of Hubbard; three brothers, Norman Dell of New Hampshire, George Dell of Ohio and Russell Dell of Texas; two sisters, Carrie Brown of Maine and Della Votter of Greenville, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Dell.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, at 6 p.m. at the Andover Christian Church, Stillman Avenue in Andover.

Constance “Katie” M. DiFebo, 92

MASURY – Constance “Katie” M. DiFebo, 92, of 563 Brookfield Ave., died at 2 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009, at O’Brien’s Health Care Center in Masury.

She was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Niles, the daughter of August and Sadie Polita Corso.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles and a homemaker.

Her husband, Guerino “Bill” DiFebo, whom she married Nov. 21, 1959, died June 22, 1984.

She will be deeply missed by two sons, Frank Petrella and his wife, Marlene, of Broadview Heights, and James Petrella and his wife, Sharon, of Marquette, Mich.; two stepdaughters, Theresa DiOrio of Florida and Betty Vinchwater and her husband, Nick, of Florida, five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, August Corso, Sam Corso, Joseph Corso, Anthony Corso, and John Corso; and four sisters, Margaret Soriano, Ann Corso, Rose Liberatore, and Mary Iezzi.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, with Fr. Larry Frient officiating, preceded by a 12:30 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.

Shirley Colbert Goldberg

TAMPA, FLA. – Shirley Colbert Goldberg died April 25, 2009 in Tampa.

She was born May 5, 1937, in South Side Hospital in Youngstown.

Shirley graduated from Liberty High School in 1955. She joined the U.S. Navy after graduation, where she met her husband, Kenneth Goldberg. They were married for 52 years.

She is survived by her husband; one daughter; three sons, and two sisters, Barbara Brandenburg and Beverly Ridge.

Surviving are her four children, 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Laura and Marty Colbert; a sister, Helen Louise Mickel; and an 18 year old grandson, Craig Goldberg.

Dominic P. Italiano Sr., 87

BOARDMAN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen of Hungary Church, 854 Wilson Ave. in Youngstown, with the Rev. Nicholas Mancini officiating, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Dominic P. Italiano Sr., 87, who passed away early Thursday morning, May 21, 2009, with his loving family by his side.

Dominic will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Youngstown, the son of Angelo and Mary (Bernard) Italiano, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was employed at Truscon and Republic Steel Companies as a welder and retired in 1984. He owned and operated with his family the original Dairy Queen on Mahoning Avenue and Belle Vista from 1959 until 1963.

Dominic was a 1942 graduate of The Rayen School, where he was a letterman on the football team, and was a member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and participated in the second wave of the Normandy Invasion. He earned the rank of private first class, and belonged to the 492nd Medical Collecting Company as an ambulance driver. He was awarded the following decorations, the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.

Dominic was a member of the VFW Post 8841 and was a proud member of their Elite Team. He was a union representative of the Steel Workers Union AFL-CIO.

He loved gardening, woodworking, doing crafts and golfing, but he enjoyed playing cards, especially poker at the VFW Club.

He leaves behind to hold onto his memories, his wife of over 61 years, the former Julia Mislai, whom he married June 14, 1947; a son, Dominic Jr. (Helen) Italiano; two daughters, Cindy Italiano and Julie (Italiano) Day, all of Boardman; 11 grandchildren, Dominic III (Sarah) Italiano, Kristen Italiano, Katie (Mike) Schorsten, Laura (Ken) Kraft, Jonathan and David Italiano, Rob (Mandy) Ramunno, Harmony and Hayley Ramunno and Amanda and Rick Day; and three great-grandchildren, Allie Ramunno, Alexis Italiano and Michael Schorsten Jr.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Augustine “Augie,” Pasquale “Pat” and Michael “Mike” Italiano and five sisters, Minnie Tuccio, Rose Buccieri, Josephine Blanch, Angeline “Ange” James and Jennie Tod.

Friends may call on Monday, May 25, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Trumbull County American Legion.

Gregory Michael Jones

YOUNGSTOWN – Gregory Michael Jones passed away at Hospice of the Valley on Thursday afternoon after an illness of several months.

Greg was born on Feb. 12, 1956, in Youngstown and spent his entire life here.

He enjoyed his short life and many friends to the fullest. He graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School and spent most of his working career at steel mills in Canton.

Greg will be sadly missed by his seven brothers and sisters, James (Kerry) of Denver, William (Patricia) of Canfield, Terrence (Jeanne) of Clark, Pa., Edward (Caline) of Boardman, Kathleen of Denver, Lynne (Kevin) of Boardman and Barbara (Robert) of Denver, and several nieces and nephews.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Catherine (Winkle).

A memorial to celebrate Greg’s life will be announced at a future date.

Oscar Judd, 68

NORTH LIMA – Oscar Judd, 68, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 19.

He was born March 27, 1941, in New Hampshire, the son of Roy and Isabel (Powers) Judd.

Oscar was employed as a test operator at Firestone.

He will always be remembered by his wife, the former Bonita Fish, whom he married Nov. 25, 1966; a daughter, Jennifer (Chad) Hughes; a son, Rodney (fiance Amber Galineau) Judd; two granddaughters, Christina Judd and Tricia Bair; a cousin, Alfred Bowles; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rev. David L. Lettau

MADISON-ON-THE-LAKE – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown on Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. for the Rev. David L. Lettau, pastor emeritus of St. James Parish in Warren who died May 21 at his residence.

Fr. Lettau was born Nov. 8, 1927, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph L. and Katherine Welsch Lettau.

He attended St. Patrick School and Ursuline High School. He continued his studies at St. Mary College in St. Mary, Ky., and studied theology at St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland. Fr. Lettau also took graduate courses at John Carroll University in Cleveland.

Father Lettau was ordained Feb. 28, 1953, by Bishop Emmet M. Walsh. Following his ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Rose in Girard and on the faculty of Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney High Schools. In 1968, Bishop James Malone appointed Fr. Lettau pastor of St. Jude in Columbiana and Director of the Propagation of the Faith Office for the Dioceses of Youngstown. He became pastor of the Regina Coeli Parish in Alliance in 1970 and the pastor of St. James in Warren in 1973. Bishop Malone appointed him senior associate pastor of St. Patrick in Youngstown in 1986. Fr. Lettau retired July 1, 1992.

Father Lettau had been a fourth degree Knight of Columbus in the Alliance General Assembly, a member of High School CCD Advisory Board, the Diocesan Conciliation Board and a member of the Priest’s Senate.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Patricia Lettau of Youngstown and Kay Lettau of Las Vegas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Msgr. John J., Paul C., Joseph N. and Richard Lettau; and two sisters, Mary M. Lally and Jeannette Lettau.

Dorothy Miles, 83

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Dorothy Miles, 83, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at her residence.

She was born in Girard on Jan. 26, 1926, the daughter of the late Robert and Mary Dabich Rebraca.

Dorothy worked for the M&M Manufacturing Co. in Girard for 25 years as a stapler, retiring in 1984. She attended Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church.

She is survived by her son, Charles E. (Michelle) Miles Jr. of Sharon; her daughter, Cynthia L. (Kenneth) Ellsworth, with whom she made her home; her sisters, Kay Mikicic and Ann Moadus, both of Niles; three grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Pozega; and her brothers, Anthony, John, Pete, Mike and Joseph Rebraca.

A private memorial service was held on Saturday at Blackstone Funeral Home.

James E. Murphy, 72

HUBBARD – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hubbard for James E. Murphy, 72, who passed away Thursday May 21, 2009, at his residence.

He was born July 20, 1936, in Youngstown, a son of James J. and Elizabeth A. Garthwaite Murphy, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a steelworker at Wean United of Warren and owned the J. Murphy Construction Company. He also owned a computer programming company, National Estimating, Inc.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He really enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and bowling.

He will be sadly missed by his family: his wife, the former Virginia R. Mauerman, whom he married April 20, 1956; his children, Diane (Mark) McAllen of Hubbard, Kathy (Jack) Sullivan of Hubbard, Patty Murphy of Hubbard, Debbie (Ray) Frazzini of Hubbard, James (Diane) Murphy of Hermitage, Pa., Michael (Kristen) Murphy of Masury and Matthew Murphy of Hubbard; and 18 grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Eileen (Ed) Slavin of Palm Springs, Calif.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Murphy; and his sister, Delores Wellington.

There will be calling hours Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and prayers on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Anna Marie Pettiford, 62

YOUNGSTOWN – Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home for Anna Marie Pettiford, 62, who departed this life Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Pettiford was born Sept. 6, 1946, in Struthers, a daughter of William Collins and Mary Frances Patterson.

She was a licensed practical nurse in private practice.

She leaves her husband, John A. Pittiford, whom she married June of 1966; her children, Shaun A., Tracy L. and Lenora M. Pettiford, all of Youngstown and Antoinette E. Pettiford-Smith (Keith) of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Her parents; a daughter, Dawn; a son, Albert; and two brothers, Bobby and Tommy Patterson, preceded her in death.

Veronica A. (Geraci) Ridge, 59

BOARDMAN – Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers and at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Church in Boardman for Veronica A. (Geraci) Ridge, 59, who passed away Friday afternoon at Hospice House.

Veronica was born Aug. 2, 1949, in Youngstown, a daughter of Dominic and Mary Murcko Finamore. She lived in the area her whole life.

She was a receptionist for Dr. Dunch for four years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Church and a Eucharistic minister at the church.

Veronica’s first husband was Richard A. Geraci, who passed away in 1989. Her second husband was Martin J. Ridge, whom she married on March 10, 1991.

Besides her husband, Martin, she leaves behind two sons, Michael A. Geraci of New Middletown and Richard D. Geraci of Youngstown; one brother, Michael Finamore of Poland; and two sisters, Arlene Kish and Mary Aracich, both of Boardman. She also leaves three grandchildren, Leah, Gianna and Carli.

Veronica was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Richard.

Anna Mae Siva, 75

LOWELLVILLE – There will be funeral services at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, May 25, at the Rossi-Lellio Funeral Home, followed by a 12 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, both in Lowellville, for Anna Mae Siva, 75, who passed away Wednesday evening, May 20.

Anna Mae was born April 8, 1934, in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County Pennsylvania, the daughter of John and Carmel (Storti) Cicuto.

She moved to Lowellville in 1937 and attended Lowellville schools where she graduated in 1952.

Anna Mae worked at the City Office & Art Company in Youngstown and attended Youngstown State University. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Church and served as president of the Altar and Rosary Society and Ladies Guild, served with the PTA, Ladies of Mt. Carmel Society, the Gloria DeTel Ladies, the Lowellville Seniors and bowled in the Zodiacs League at Bowladrome Lanes with the Aries Team.

Anna Mae loved to go on vacations with her family, loved baseball and theater, and attended many Yankee games and Broadway plays in New York and locally.

She was a wonderful and loving mother to her family.

Anna Mae will always be remembered by her husband, George, whom she married April 30, 1955 and whose love will live on; a son, George (Cynthia) Siva of Casselberry, Fla.; three daughters, Leida Ann (Joe) Shuluga of Lowellville, Teresa (John) Norris of Hubbard and Mary Beth (Rick) Crozier of Brookfield; eight grandchildren, Andrew and Anthony Siva, Katie (David) Olson, Joseph and Nicholas Shuluga, Shelby, Rachel and Georganna Norris, and Derrick, Carmella, Dillon and Dallas Crozier; two great-grandchildren, David and Angelina Olson; and three sisters-in-law, Theresa Cicuto, Dolores Schurko and Loretta Hamley.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Lou, Roy, Frank and John; and her sisters, Mary (Steve) Kolesar, Helen (Mike) O’Conner and Viola (Russell) Stille.

John R. Smith, 97

POLAND – Services were held Saturday for John R. Smith, 97, who died Tuesday at his residence.

Arrangements were handled by the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers.

John was born Aug. 7, 1911, in Charleston, W.Va., a son of Spencer and Myrtle McGrew Smith.

He was raised in Brownlee Woods since the age of five and attended South High School. At the age of 18, he left Youngstown during the Depression and hopped trains and worked odd jobs across America.

He married Mildred J. Leeper on March 19, 1941. John then served in the U.S. Navy as a code man in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and tracked U Boats in the Caribbean. He worked at LTV for 37 years as a machinist and retired in 1976. He was a collector and enjoyed going to garage sales and flea markets in the area. He was a member of the former Brownlee Woods United Presbyterian Church and the Masons.

John leaves behind two sons Dr. John S. Smith and Thomas E. Smith, both of Youngstown; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, who died Aug. 4, 1997; and his sister, Virginia Williams.

Robert C. Stricklin, 87

GIRARD – Robert C. Stricklin, 87, formerly of Struthers, died Tuesday evening at his daughter’s home in Vienna.

Mr. Stricklin was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Youngstown, a son of Willard and Beatrice Patchett Stricklin. He was raised in Struthers where he lived until moving to Liberty in 2000.

A 1939 graduate of Struthers High School, Mr. Stricklin worked as an electrician for Sharon Steel until its closing, and then for the former Saramar Aluminum in Warren. After retirement, Mr. Stricklin worked as a security guard for Wean United.

Mr. Stricklin served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1942 until 1945. He served in Luzon New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago Battles and Campaigns. He received numerous medals including Asiatic-Pacific three Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Stricklin was a member of the Sulgrave Lodge F&AM and a 32nd degree Mason of the Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite.

He loved fishing, gardening, and spending his winters in Edgewater, Fla. Mr. Stricklin was an excellent cook and got experience cooking while in the service. Mr. Stricklin enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and his two dogs.

His wife, the former Mary Jane Hiner, whom he married April 24, 1942, died June 19, 1993.

Mr. Stricklin leaves his daughter, Betty Jane (John) Rouzzo of Vienna; two sons, Donald Stricklin of Maryland and Robert (Margaret) Stricklin of Cadiz, Ky.; three sisters, Dorothy Nickells of Illinois, Mary Ellen Lissimore of Newton Falls and Alice Lissimore of Youngstown; a brother, James (Irene) Stricklin of Texas; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Junior and Raymond Stricklin; and two sisters, Donna Jean Stricklin and Edna Perkins.

Private funeral services were held Saturday at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with the Rev. Henry Pearce officiating.

The family requests memorial contributions go to Hospice of the Valley.

Helen Wasko, 91

YORBA LINDA, CALIF. – Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph the Provider Church, with Father Michael Swierz officiating, for Helen Wasko, 91, who quietly passed away May 16, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.

Helen was born Nov. 23, 1917, in Campbell, the daughter of Michael and Katherine Kirtos Geletka, the fourth of nine children.

In 1942, she married her husband, Albert Wasko, and they were married for almost 38 years before he passed away in 1979. They lived in Struthers after Albert returned from military service in World War II and in 1957 moved to their home in Boardman, where Helen lived until she moved to California in 2003.

She was a longtime member of St. Nicholas Church in Struthers and was also a member of the Greek Catholic Union.

Helen was known as a kind and gentle soul. Her journey in life was to raise and care for her family, both immediate and extended.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her two children, Janice Morger of Yorba Linda and William and his wife, Antonia, of Oakland, Calif.

Helen was always the proud parent of Janice and William and provided them with a loving and supportive home. They will miss her every day. She also leaves her granddaughter, Anya of Oakland; three sisters, Anna Shirilla, Melanie Geletka and Dorothy Pasacic; and two brothers, John and George Geletka.

The Wasko family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Nicholas P. Wellman, 75

LAKE WORTH, FLA. – Mr. Nicholas P. Wellman, 75, formerly of Girard, went to be with the lord peacefully May 17, 2009.

Mr. Wellman graduated from the Stanton Military Academy in 1951 and attended Georgia Tech, where he played football. He graduated from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of the case wrestling team and was the Eminent Archon of the SAE fraternity.

Mr. Wellman earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Akron Law School in 1966. That same year he was admitted to the Ohio Bar and formed the Wellman & Wellman Law Firm in Youngstown, where he practiced as a trial attorney with his brother, Thomas.

In the early 1970s, he relocated his family to Lake Worth, Fla.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Joan Wellman; son Peter Wellman and wife Cheri and their daughters, Lindsay and Laurel; son Nathan Wellman and wife Evelina and their children, Annalise and Nathan II; and son Nicholas Wellman II and wife Lynne and their sons, Nick III and Cameron.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Blackstone Funeral Home.

Graveside services will follow at Tod Homestead Cemetery.
