Hugh A. Baumgardner, 72
KINSMAN Hugh A. Baumgardner, 72, went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2009.
He was born on June 7, 1936, in Cleveland, the son of Richard D. and Martha A. (McPherson) Baumgardner.
Hugh was a 1955 graduate of Andover High School, after which he served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1958 as a military police officer in France. Then he attended Kent State University and was a 1962 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, at which time he joined the family business.
On March 7, 1964, Hugh and Ardean B. Nelson were married. That same year the Baumgardner Funeral Homes expanded, so Hugh and his wife, Ardean, moved to Kinsman and began serving the people. He could be seen daily at either of the funeral home locations in Andover or Kinsman, at the monument shop, or at the Baumgardner Furniture Store, formerly located on the square in Andover. Hugh diligently served and comforted the people in the surrounding area for over 45 years and was a 4th generation funeral director.
Hugh was a member of the Kinsman Presbyterian Church for over 25 years and for over the last 20 years has attended the Rock of Grace Family Ministries of Kinsman.
He was a member and enthusiast of the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club, and of the Mosquito Lake Power Squadron, as well as a founding member and past president of the Kinsman Area Rotary Club. Hugh served on the Kinsman Cemetery Association Board since 1967 and was a member of both the Ohio and National Funeral Director Associations.
An avid boater for over 40 years, Hugh also enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and working with his Farmall M, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. His legacy is one of service above self, compassion and unique humor.
Preceding him in death are his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ardean B. Nelson; three daughters, Kristan A. and husband, Howard Hornickel of Washington, Pa., Pamela E. and husband, William R. Toth Jr. and Ingrid B. Baumgardner of Kinsman; six grandchildren, Kyle, Alexis and Ryan Hornickel and Jacklyn, John William Hugh and Julia Toth; a brother, Sanford L. and wife, Carol Baumgardner of Andover; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009, from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St. in Kinsman.
Hughs funeral service will be held Friday, June 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Mark Biel and the Rev. Larry Myers officiating.
Burial will follow at Kinsman Cemetery.

Frances M. Horvath, 83
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen of Hungary Church for Frances M. Horvath, 83, who passed away May 29, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital.
Frances was born Oct. 25, 1925 in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Julia Balint Palotsee.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Youngstown College with a degree in education.
Frances was a school teacher for St. Cyril & Methodius School and the Youngstown City School System, retiring from West Elementary after 22 years of teaching.
She was a member of St. Stephen of Hungary Church, the Altar Rosary Society and an active member of the YMCA.
Frances is survived by her husband, Robert L. Horvath, whom she married April 7, 1947; two sons, Robert F. of Youngstown and Ronald of Youngstown; two daughters, Paula M. Horvath at home and Frances M. (Tyne) Horvath of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Sue Ellen Mazon and Nathan S. Horvath; two great-grandchildren, Sarah E. Mazon and Robert A. Mazon; a brother, Robert Palotsee of Youngstown; and a sister, Evelyn Horvath of Austintown.
She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Susan Horvath; and two sisters, Dorothy Pitlik and Betty Jean Palotsee.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Lake Park Cemetery.
Henry R. Johnson, 82
FOWLER Henry R. Johnson, 82, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Cortland Health Care Center, where he had been a resident for four years.
He was born on Jan. 30, 1927 in McDonald, the son of Chester and Elsie (Rishel) Johnson.
Henry loved spending time with his family and helping anyone who needed an extra set of hands. He worked at various places and retired from RMI Titanium in Niles in 1989, working there for 33 years. He was a Fowler Volunteer Fireman, worked the Fowler Fair, Fowler Strawberry Festival, and set up the speaker system for the Fowler Memorial Day service for many years. Also in past years he had go-cart and motorcycle races at his Fowler residence.
Henry and his family ran two Johnsons Corn Dog Concessions Trailers for 24 years. The trailers can still be found at local fairs. Henry was a kind and loving man and he will be sadly missed by his family, friends, Cortland Healthcare Center staff and all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty, whom he married Nov. 1, 1947 in Niles; sons, Tim (Pat) Johnson, Denny (Michelle) Johnson, both of Rock Hill, S.C. and Kevin (Cindy) Johnson of Fowler; daughters, Darlene Mays of Martinez, Ga. and Shirley Secrist of Cortland; daughter-in-law, Nancy Johnson of Cortland; 11 grandchildren, Tracey, Mike, Bill, Greta, Linda, Fawne, Helana, Amanda, Kayla, Christopher and Ricky; and 17 great-grandchildren.
His son, Staff Sgt. Terry L. Johnson preceded him in death, as well as Henrys parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Shafer Winans Funeral Chapel, 164 North High St., Cortland, OH 44410.
The family will be receiving friends on Friday, June 5, 2009, at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.
Henry will be laid to rest at Pineview Memorial Park in Warren.

Michael Kosanovic, 73
YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Michael Kosanovic, 73, who died early Sunday morning at Hospice House in Poland.
He was born Nov. 6, 1935 in East Liverpool, a son of Svetko and Mildred Kosanovic.
He was a 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School in Midland, Pa. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving from 1954 to 1958. After his military service, he attended the Youngstown College from which he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Economics in 1962.
He worked as a shipping supervisor for the former Commercial Shearing, now Commercial Intertech for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
He enjoyed fishing, trips to Mountaineer, talking on the phone with his daughter, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Michael was a kind and loving man and he will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara J. Burky, whom he married Aug. 4, 1962. He also leaves behind two daughters, Kathleen J. (Kenneth) Caldwell Sr. of Austintown and Karen S. (Michael) Harding of Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren, Kelli L. (Richard Evans) Caldwell of Boardman, Kristen M. (Jason) Bird of Niles, Kenneth Caldwell Jr. of Austintown, Nicholas J. Harding and Rachel S. Harding. both of Lexington and Kurtis M. Caldwell of Austintown; one great-grandson, Logan Bird, whom he affectionately referred to as Tarzan of Niles; a sister, Anna Mae Yevak of Industry, Pa.; a brother, Joseph Kosanovich of Midland; a special niece and nephew, Cheryl and Richard Yevak; and his adopted daughter and close family friend, Tricia Johnson of Austintown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Martha Kosanovich; and a brother-in-law, Richard Yevak.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Vince Martini, 54
GIRARD Vince Martini, 54, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Martini was born Nov. 5, 1954 to the late Perry and Angeline Pitt Martini Sr. in Warren.
He was a 1972 graduate of JFK where he excelled in track and football, was a loyal booster for JFK and Girard High athletics clubs. He attended Wentworth Military academy from 1972 to 1975, he served two years in the U.S. Army as a MP, then worked as a reserve officer for Brookfield and Bazetta police departments and the Trumbull County Sheriff from 1976 to 1980. He then worked for the Department of Defense and the Department of Justice as a Federal Police Officer in Washington, D.C. and Ohio for 18 years, retiring in 1998, where he received many performance awards.
He was a former member of St. James Church in Warren and was a current member of St. Rose Church.
He earned his associates degree in arts and communications in 2002, he also would have received his bachelors degree in arts and communications in the fall with honors.
He was currently working as a computer consultant, was the former Man of the Year with the Niles Jaycees Club, where he also received the Outstanding Young Men of America Award. He was a self-taught computer web master, servicing hundreds of clients in Washington, D.C. and Ohio. He was a known and respected by local media, radio and TV for his wealth of knowledge.
His greatest love was being involved in his childrens activities and sporting events, and currently working with his daughter to pursue her singing career. He was an avid follower of all professional Cleveland sports, his favorite being the Cleveland Indians.
He is survived by Karen Martini, and their children, Joseph, Daniel, Dominic, Sophia and Gina, all of Girard; sister, Marie (Tony) Balista of Warren; brother, Perry (Jean) Martini Jr. of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Rose Church, preceded by a prayer service at 10:30 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home where visitation will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Internment will follow at Girard City Cemetery.
Phyllis Meli, 87
BOARDMAN Services will be on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for Phyllis Meli, 87, of the Ron-Joy Nursing Home, formerly of Struthers and Columbiana, who passed away on Sunday morning at the Ron-Joy Nursing Home.
Phyllis was born Nov. 12, 1921 in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Nancy Costello.
She was a housewife and a former member of St. Judes Church in Columbiana.
Phyllis married Jerry Meli in 1943 and he passed away in 2008.
She leaves one son, Dennis S. (Linda) Meli of Poland; one daughter, Madelyn (William) Clarke of Girard; one sister, Caroline Smaldino of Struthers; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Madeline Meli; two brothers, Mike and Julius Costello; and one sister, Mary DeRamo.
Friends may call two hours before the service at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

ANDOVER Memorial services will be held at later date at Green Haven Memorial Gardens for Sarah Rose Troy Pittard, 53, of Andover Village Retirement Community, formerly of this area, died Sunday evening.
Sarah was born in Youngstown and was the daughter of Jesse C. and Opal Troy.
She had been a cook at Skylark Restaurant in Canfield a number of years ago and was a graduate of Western Reserve High School in Berlin Center.
Sarah is survived by her mother of Berlin Center; her siblings, Terry (Mary Ann) Troy and Jesse T. (Beth) Troy, both of Youngstown and Debra (Skip) Igo of Ellsworth; and four nephews and one niece, Lt. Matthew Igo of S. Dakota, David Igo of Ellsworth, Tony Troy of California, Michael Troy of New Mexico and Jessica Troy in Youngstown.
She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Ray; and a niece, Virginia Igo.

MINERAL RIDGE - Eva P. Rapchak, 82, passed away at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.
Eva was born Sept. 2, 1926 in McDonald, the daughter of the late James W. and Tillie (Ashburn) Hamby and moved to this area in 1945.
Eva retired in 1985 as a telephone operator with Sprint.
Eva was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren.
Eva was married on July 3, 1946 to Stephen J. Rapchak and they were married until his passing on April 2, 2005.
Eva is survived by two daughters, Debbie (Timothy) Barrow of Kent and Bonnie (Jim Hlifka) Fellows of Howland Township; six grandchildren, Kevin (Stacey) Fonderlin, Brian (Barb) Fonderlin, Chris (Nicole) Fellows, Nicholas (Melissa) Barrow, Heidi Barrow and Corie (James) Moorhead; 10 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Andrew, Addison, Briana, Brooke and Jake Fonderlin, Ayden and Savannah Barrow, Tiffany Barrow Tingler and Shawn Dylan; a niece Karen (John) Niemiec of Bergholz and a great nephew Alex Niemiec.
Besides her parents and husband, Eva was preceded in death by a brother, James Claude Hamby; and sister, Reba Stout.

Marguerite J. Maggie Tavolario Rozzo, 84
HUBBARD Marguerite J. Maggie Tavolario Rozzo, 84, died Saturday evening, May 30, 2009, at Cleveland Clinic.
Marguerite was born on March 18, 1925 in Youngstown, a daughter of Carmine and Faustina Moretti Tavolario and lived in Hubbard for over 50 years.
She graduated from Scienceville High School and attended Youngstown College Secretarial School.
Maggie had been employed by McKelveys as a billing clerk until she married and had her own family. She then worked at Federal Wholesale for 22 years.
Maggie was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Hubbard, where she was a member of the Disciples of Mary and the Altar and Rosary Society.
Her husband, George Rozzo, whom she married Sept. 16, 1950, died Oct. 30, 1994. She leaves two daughters, Georgann Rozzo and Marguerite (Richard) Marsh, both of Columbus; two sons, David (Rose) Rozzo of Rochester, N.Y. and Dr. Daniel Rozzo of Columbus; one grandson, Joseph of Rochester; a sister, Adeline Tavolario; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her mother and father, Faustina and Carmine Tavolario; two brothers, Andrew and Jack; and two sisters, Antoinette Mullins and Rose Tavolario.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church.

Beryl J. Sachire, 85
AUSTINTOWN Prayers will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for Mrs. Beryl J. Sachire, 85, who passed away Sunday morning.
Beryl was born Feb. 8, 1924 in Altoona, Pa., the daughter of William and Kathryn Hamar Kerlin.
After her graduation from South High School in 1942, she joined the Navy Waves, serving during World War II. She later worked as a secretary at General Fireproofing and the Sheet & Tube Corporation. She also had worked as a clerk at Isalys dairy and Cooks Department Store before retiring. She was a longtime member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Her husband Frank S. Sachire, whom she married July 19, 1944, died Dec. 24, 2008.
She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Sachire, Linda Ditullio and Mary (John) Colla, all of Austintown; three sons, Frank (Patty) Sachire of Canfield, Stephen of Austintown and Michael (Elainna) of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; a sister, Margorie Smiley of Boardman; six grandchildren, Ryan (Cindy) Sachire, Danielle (Christy) Morrone, Jennifer Colla, John F. Colla, Gina Colla and Rory Sachire; four great-grandchildren, Ryane Esenwein, Mia Wilson, Taylor Dane Morrone and Anna Sachire.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Donald D. Ditullio; grandson, Donald D. Ditullio Jr.; three sisters, LeEtta Hawk, Adaline Landshof and Clara Thornton; and a brother, William Kerlin.

David Eric Sodergren, 72
EAST PALESTINE David Eric Sodergren, 72, passed away early Sunday morning, May 31, after losing his battle with cancer at Parkside Health Care Center in Columbiana.
David was born Aug. 12, 1936 in Center Township, Beaver County, Pa., and had attended East Palestine High School, prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he began a career as a truck driver, retiring in 2003. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with his many friends he made throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Karl Erik Sodergren and Gertrude Karlberg, he was preceded in death by two sons, Rick Eric Sodergren and David J. Sodergren; and a brother, Robert Sodergren.
David is survived by a son, Mark J. Sodergren, his wife, Leslie and a grandson, Steven Parker, who reside in East Palestine; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Boutwell, of Huntsville, Ala., her husband, Andy and her children, Betsi and Mason. Also surviving is Davids brother, Ronald and his wife, Janice of New Galilee, Pa. and two sisters, Marian Mauer and her husband, Robert of McCormick, S.C. and Alice Porter of St. Petersburg, Fla. David leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews as well. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A private memorial and burial will be held at a later date.
Arrangements were with the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home.
