Father George Methodius Duritsa, 85

HUNTSBURG – Father George Methodius Duritsa, 85, nicknamed “Spike” by family, died June 5, 2009 while living at Blossom Hill Care Center.

George was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Farrell, Pa., the son of George and Margaret Duritsa.

Following Farrell High School graduation, he joined the Navy at the start of World War Il, training at Great Lakes Naval Station and serving as QM l/c in the amphibious forces in the Pacific Theatre during invasions of the Marshall Islands, the Marian Islands, New Guinea, and various mop-up operations.

After the war, he entered the seminary in St. Mary’s, Ky., then attended St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland for two years of philosophy, studied theology at North American College in Rome, Italy, and earned STB and STL degrees from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy.

He was ordained a Catholic Priest by Bishop Martin O’Conner in Rome on Dec. 19, 1953. After returning to the United States, Father Duritsa did graduate studies at John Carroll University, Duquesne University, Detroit University, and was awarded a Master of Arts degree from Notre Dame University.

His assignments by the Diocese of Youngstown included Parish work at various parishes, teaching philosophy for five years at Youngstown State University, serving as Chaplain at the Vienna, Ohio U. S. Air Force Base, the Vienna Radar Station, and St. Elizabeth Health Center, being Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in McDonald, for 25 years, and being Administrator of St. Elizabeth Church in Campbell from 1997 until its 2003 closing.

He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Carol Triggs and Fred Triggs of Lyndhurst; and by 11 nieces and nephews.

He has been predeceased by two sisters, Frances Duritsa and Arlene Wey.

A funeral Mass will be said at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald, at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, with calling hours an hour before the service.

Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio.

Father Duritsa’s entire adult life has been devoted to serving God, Country, and People.

William Kenneth Dusch, 73

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MO. – William Kenneth Dusch, 73, formerly of Youngstown, entered into heaven on May 18, 2009.

“Bill” was born in DuBois, Pa., on Aug. 6, 1935 to the late Frances Sherwood and Kenneth Dusch.

He was a graduate of North High School and was the owner of Dusch Refrigeration/Air Conditioning and Beverage Service in Kansas City, Mo., for 30 years, retiring in 2001.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Patricia Kelley Dusch; a son, Kenneth (Theresa) and daughter, Elaine McBride, both of Kansas City; five grandchildren; his sister, Joyce Dusch McFall of Boardman and Fort Myers, Fla.; nephew Ernie McFall and niece Catherine McFall Stamp, both of Fort Myers, Fla., and niece Gloria McFall Candella of Campbell; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held May 27, 2009 at the Mt. Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home in Kansas City. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Richard E. Forrester

NILES – Richard “Rich” E. Forrester, 41, passed away Thursday evening June 4, 2009.

Rich was born Dec. 7, 1967 in Youngstown. He was a 1985 graduate of South High School.

He proudly served as Union President at Michigan Hanger for several years taking enormous pride in his ability to bargain contracts for his fellow employees. After the closing of Michigan Hanger, Rich was employed by Associate Paper Stock in North Lima. Rich was the President of R.F. Enterprises.

As a loving, devoted father to his children, Rich thrived on being the best dad he could be. He loved the quality time he spent with his family and friends. He was an avid sports fan and golfer. He looked forward to playing cards with his buddies and gaming. He loved relaxing to Frank Sinatra, motorcycle riding with his daughter, and 4-wheeling with his son.

Rich was blessed with his two children who survive him. His “Angel” Dana, and his “Buddy” Zachary (both of Mineral Ridge) were the center of his world. Rich will also be leaving behind the mother of his children, Sharon Forrester of Mineral Ridge and his stepfather, Jerry Pennybaker of Lisbon. He leaves three brothers, Tom Forrester of Weirton W.Va., Jim (Nancy) Forrester of Hobe Sound, Fla., Paul (Christina) Forrester of Salem; two sisters, Janet Forrester of Youngstown and Gerri Lynn (Rich) Beaver of Lisbon; and several nieces and nephews. He is also leaving behind many close friends who loved and cared about him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Forrester and Stella (Castle) Forrester–Pennybaker.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel.

Family and friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Janet S. (Beckett) Giovanni, 69

COOLVILLE – Janet S. (Beckett) Giovanni, 69, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.

She was born July 29, 1939, in Parkersburg, daughter of the late Cecil and Virginia Harper Beckett.

She is survived by a daughter, Tonda Cottrill and Tim Anthony of Parkersburg; two sons, Thomas (Mike) Batson and his wife, Janine Fogleman of Struthers and Steven Ray Butler of Marietta; a special companion, Richard (Dick) Sams of Belpre; two brothers, Jack Beckett of Parkersburg and Kenny Beckett of Twin City, Minn.; a sister, Arlene White of Newark, W.Va.; seven grandchildren, Shad Mace, Jake Cottrill, Amos Cottrill, Rikki Lee Batson, Kenny Fogleman, Marco and Nikki Giovanni; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Giovanni Jr. and a brother, Eddie Beckett.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Green Haven Cemetery in Austintown, with James Elder Tracewell officiating.

Edith Haynes, 62

YOUNGSTOWN – Mrs. Edith Haynes, 62, departed this life Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at University Hospital in Cleveland.

Edith was born Jan. 29, 1947, in Youngstown, a daughter of Allen and Alma Burnett McQueen.

A homemaker, Edith devoted her life to being a wife, sister, mother, grandma and friend. She enjoyed bingo, cards and being with family.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Erica L. Haynes, Erica’s fiancee, David K. Lawrence, an RN who was her primary caregiver during her time of illness; four sons, MacArthur Jr., Michael, Dwayne Haynes and Nathan (Tamala) Haynes, all of Youngstown; a granddaughter whom she reared, Breanna Haynes; a sister, Geraldine McQueen; two brothers, Horace McQueen and Nathaniel Cowan; sister-in-law, Margaret Haynes; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, whom she loved.

Besides her parents and husband, MacArthur Haynes Sr., whom she married in 1962, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Willa Lee, Frances and Jean; three brothers, Freddie and Allen McQueen and Ervin Cowan; and brother-in-law, Anthony Haynes.

Friends may call Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.

Frank J. Hentzl, 79

YOUNGSTOWN – A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Frank Joseph Hentzl, 79, who passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009, at his daughter’s home in North Jackson, with his loving family by his side after a courageous two and half year battle with cancer.

Mr. Hentzl was born in Germany to his parents, Amelia and Alois Hentzl and came to this country at the age of 20 joining and serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1961 as a ER/SP4.

Mr. Hentzl met and married his wife, Miranda Leone, on Jan. 2, 1954. They were married for 29 years. He was a retired carpenter by trade and an active member of Local 271 Carpenters Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Frank was a loving man cherished by all who knew him and will be sorely missed by his daughters, Cindy (Donnie) Burns of North Jackson and Terry (Dean) Stevens of Diamond; three grandsons, Matthew J. Dippolito, Dean Lukas and Joshua A. Stevens; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia (Nick) Uroseva and Toni Ragan, both of Youngstown; three stepgrandchildren, Donnie (Shelly) Burns, Dianna (Alan) Malachin and Gregory Burns; and two step great-grandchildren, Alycha Malachin and Riley Lynn Burns.

Frank loved life. He enjoyed spending all his time with his family. He loved to travel and see all God’s beautiful creation. He respected and loved spending time with nature. A very intelligent self-taught man, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Margaret “Susie” Jay

GIRARD – Margaret “Susie” Jay, died at her home on Friday, June 5, 2009.

Susie was born Nov. 18, 1935, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late William and Sarah Kay Reitz.

She was a graduate of the Youngstown Hospital School of Nursing and had worked as a registered nurse for 12 years at Northside Hospital, and retired in 2003 after 35 years as a nurse for Girard High School.

Susie was a member of the Girard First United Methodist Church, a former member of the Girard Junior Women’s Club and founder and past-president of the Girard Womens Football Club. She enjoyed golf and had formerly played on the Swingers League at Pine Lake and Par Belle Gold League at Mahoning Country Club.

She is survived by her husband, John C. Jay, whom she married April 25, 1957; her children, John (Cynde) Jay of Columbiana, James (Tina) Jay of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeffrey (Darcie) Jay of Girard and Peggy (Gary) Kay of Liberty Township; and six grandchildren, Ryan and Jessica Jay of Murfreybough, Tenn., Bryanna and Callie Jay of Girard, CJ Kay of Columbus and Capt. Christine Kay of Ft. Hood, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 9th, at 11 a.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, followed by internment at the Girard City Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mary Alice (Stein) Kissella, 77

PITTSBURGH – Mary Alice (Stein) Kissella, 77, passed away Friday morning, June 5, 2009, in Pittsburgh after battling peritoneal cancer.

Mary was born Nov. 25, 1931, in Warren, a daughter of Rudolph and Alice Stein.

She was the wife of the late Edward Kissella, who preceded her in death in 2000.

She leaves her daughter, Kathy, of Pittsburgh and son, Edward, of Tampa, Fla.; and one grandson, Nicolas DeEulio, of Pittsburgh. She also leaves her sister, Shirley Deckant of Youngstown, and brother, Norbert (Shirley) Stein of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother-in-law John (Loretta) Kissella of Lumberport, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers John and Rudy Stein.

She graduated from Niles High School in 1950, practiced bookkeeping as her career and lived in Austintown until retiring to Florida in 1990. She recently moved to Pittsburgh to be closer to her grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 126 W. Park Avenue, in Niles.

Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Austintown.


Pansy Irene Koebel, 97

WELLSTON – Pansy Irene Koebel, 97, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Huston Nursing Home in Hamden, Ohio. 

She was born July 31, 1911, in Lockbourne, Ohio, the daughter of the late Oscar Benton Eddleblute and Clementine Not Eddleblute. 

Pansy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles W. and Lois Perkins of Wellston; grandchildren Sharon Ziegler, Patrick Perkins, Brian Perkins, Michael Perkins and Kelly Perkins, as well as 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.  

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chalmers Koebel; sister Laura; and brothers Jess, Charles, Roy, Bill and Lester. 

At Pansy’s request, her body was cremated. 

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 13 at 3 p.m. at the Ridgewood Cemetery with Pastor Rodney Rogers officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be given to the Wellston Senior Citizens Center, 407 South New York Avenue, Wellston, OH 45692. 

Funeral services are under the direction of the McWilliams Funeral Home.


Howard K. Lewis, 90

ACWORTH, GA. – Howard K. Lewis, 90, of Acworth, Ga., formerly of Youngstown, died Thursday, June 4 at his daughter’s home in Acworth.

He was born March 7, 1919.

Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He had worked at Youngstown Steel Door and retired after 30 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Peggy (Bob) McCaughtry of Acworth; a son, Dan (Angie) Lewis of Hubbard; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freda; three sisters, Pauline, Marie and Evelyn; and a brother, Bud.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Acworth.

Lloyd David Longanecker, 89

COLUMBIANA – Lloyd David Longanecker, 89, of 2231 Lower Elkton Road, formerly of Kingwood Drive in Columbiana, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, at his residence.

Lloyd was born Jan. 25, 1920, in East Lewistown, Ohio, the son of the late David Simeon and Susanna Rosetta Coy Longanecker.

Mr. Longanecker retired from the Ohio Turnpike in 1984, working at the Canfield Maintenance Building No. 8 for 27 years as a maintenance mechanic. Previously, he had worked at General Fireproofing as a millwright, for John Deere, and as a mechanic for the Boardman-Poland School Bus Garage.

Lloyd was a member of the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren in Columbiana. He had lived on a dairy farm in East Lewistown for 60 years before moving to Columbiana in 1979. Lloyd was a graduate of North Lima High School.

Mr. Longanecker is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Henrietta Barnhart, whom he married Oct. 18, 1957; a daughter, Carla Susan Hatch; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elene Stevens, Bulah Longanecker and Norma Stevens; and three brothers, Marion Longanecker, Elwood Longanecker and Venice Longanecker.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren with the Rev. John Bartholomew officiating.

Burial will be in the Zion Hill Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren.

John R. Malone

YOUNGSTOWN – Private memorial services will be held at a later date for John R. Malone, who passed away early Wednesday morning at Beeghley Oaks.

John was born July 10, 1924, in Youngstown, a son of James and Cassie Harrison Malone.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen (Cirelli) Malone and Elaine (Untch) Malone; and two brothers, James and Robert Malone.

John is survived by two brothers, William Malone of Struthers and Larry Welsh of Syracuse, N.Y., and one sister, Joyce Malone Kekich of Phoenix.

After leaving the Armed Forces where he served with the 82nd Airborne Division, John worked in the banking industry and resided in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years before returning to Youngstown to enjoy his semi-retirement and continue his interest in banking, as a consultant for his associates in San Francisco.

John will be missed by his family and friends.

Rita Mae “Reet” Perod, 80

COLUMBUS – Rita Mae “Reet” Perod, 80, of Worthington went to be with the Lord June 2, 2009.

Rita was born July 22, 1928, in Youngstown, to the late Harold and Marie (Kinney) Wells.

Rita enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and granddogs, gardening, crossword puzzles, cooking and baking for others, news programs and current events, and knitting washcloths for those she loved and enjoyed butter pecan ice cream.

Rita was a 1946 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

She married the late Louis S. Perod later that year. He passed away in 1963.

She was a homemaker, member and volunteer of St. Dominic’s Church, and worked at South Side Hospital in Youngstown, Credit Bureau, and in catering.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and (Larry) Kraynak, of Poland, Cheryl and (Tom) Arkwright of Lexington, LouAnn and (Don) Pelletier of Worthington; her son, Tim Perod; grandsons, Don and (Andrea) Kraynak, David and (Dawn) Kraynak, Bryan Arkwright, Chistopher and (Jenny) Pelletier, Brandon Pelletier and Kevin Perod; and great-grandchildren, Derek and Lilly, Ethan and Emma. She is also survived by her sister, Pat (George) Pallai and brother, Jim (Valerie) Wells, of Youngstown.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Wells and sister, Ruth Bynum.

Private services for the family will be held at a later date.

Lucille Portolese

CALIFORNIA – Lucille Portolese passed away June 5, 2009.

She was born in Bessemer, Pa. on April 8, 1927, to the late Robert and Iva (Snyder) Penwell.

She leaves her husband, Tony Portolese of 62 years; a son, Joe and Michelle Portolese; three daughters, Linda and Grant Zalbock, Cindy and Jack Ellis and Toni Lynn, all of California; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan Williams; and a brother, James (Jocko) Penwell of Bessemer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Thomas; and sister, Nancy DiLullo.

Arrangements are all in California.


Eva Marie Reves, 80

STRUTHERS – Eva Marie Reves, 80, died June 3, 2009.

Mrs. Reves was born July 21, 1928 in Farrell, Pa., a daughter of Rade and Pauline Millich Jankovich.

She was a 1946 graduate of Farrell High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked for the Sharon Store in Sharon, Pa.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and the SNF Serbian Lodge. Mrs. Reves took great pride in taking care of her house and her family. She was also an avid Cleveland Cavaliers fan and enjoyed rooting them on as she watched them on television.

She leaves her husband, John Reves, whom she married May 10, 1952; her daughter, Donna Lynn Reves of Struthers; her son, David Reves of Mount Laurel, N.J.; a sister, Catherine Jankovich of Hermitage, Pa.; a brother, Sam (Rose) Jankovich of Farrell; a nephew, Dr. Peter (Connie) Jankovich Jr. of Mercer, Pa.; a great-nephew, Jeffrey Jankovich of Arlington, Va.; and a great-niece, Allison Jankovich of Springfield, Va.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Peter Jankovich Sr. and his wife, Alice Jankovich.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.

Family and friends will be received today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Reves’ name to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS – John R. Seman, 85, passed away June 5, 2009.

He was born March 30, 1924 in Campbell.

He was the beloved husband of the late Betty, who died in 1983; loving father of Scott (Janis), David, and Keith (Solvita); grandfather of Nicole, Amanda, Rebecca and Kyle Seman; Abbey and Matt Seman; brother of Joseph (Anne, deceased) and Helen Maro (Joseph, deceased) and the late Marge Reno (Mike, deceased).

Paul F. Sevachko, 65

CANFIELD – Paul F. Sevachko, 65, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, June 4, 2009, at his home.

Paul was born July 12, 1943 in Youngstown, a son of Stephen and Rose Zavatsky Sevachko, and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1961 graduate of Ursuline High School, and served for 4-and-a-half years in the U.S. Navy as a radioman.

After serving in the military, Paul was a fourth-generation cabinet-maker. He was a journeyman with Carpenters Local No. 171, and was a master craftsman at Store Engineering before becoming an independent cabinet-maker.

Mr. Sevachko was a lifelong member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church and was very active in the local Byzantine Catholic community, generously donating his time and talents to several local parishes.

Paul was an avid gardener and loved being outdoors, woodworking, and vacationing in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. with his family. Paul also loved math, telling stories and jokes, and was always the last one to be seen leaving a party.

An avid Ohio State Buckeye football fanatic, he was affectionately known as “Buckeye Paul,” for his cigar-smoking, Blatz-drinking, enthusiastic support of the OSU team.

Without a doubt, he will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Sevachko leaves his beloved wife, Ruth Bishop Sevachko, whom he married Sept. 13, 1968; three daughters, Julie (Jeff) Clark of Columbus, Phyllis Sevachko and Alena Sevachko, both of New York City; his mother, Rose Sevachko of Youngstown; a granddaughter, Katie Clark of Columbus; two brothers, Dr. Gerald Sevachko of Poland and Mark (Sharon) Sevachko of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and three sisters, Elaine (Doug) Winner of Erie, Pa., Cynthia (Joseph) Reed of Boardman, and Rebecca (Robert) Toman of Ellsworth.

His father, and a son, Phillip Sevachko, are deceased.

Family and friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where a Panachida will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Funeral services will begin on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church on S. Belle Vista Ave. in Youngstown.

Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

William “Bip” Shivers, 48

YOUNGSTOWN – William Delano Shivers, 48, known to most as “Bip,” departed this life June 2, 2009.

Bip was born Nov. 19, 1960, in Youngstown to the late Edward L. Shivers and Dorothy M. (Miller) Shivers Shelton.

Bip was a 1981 graduate of Field High School in Mansfield, and he also received a certificate for Vocational Tailoring in 1983.

He has lived in the Youngstown area most of his life. He enjoyed the company of family and friends, especially his niece and nephews, and watching sports. A lot of “trash talking” surrounded his love for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Knicks.

In recent months, Bip had returned to his spiritual upbringing and had begun to attend new membership classes, bible study and church services leading to his right hand of fellowship.

Left to hold his memory dear are his mother; grandmother Mary Castle; sisters Lynda (Dallas) Humphrey of Texas, Mari (Ronnie) Keels of Youngstown and Jennifer (Jason) Roller of Youngstown; nephews Christopher (Ashante) Shivers of Maryland, Joshua Ross of Texas, Trey Roller, Ronald “Bear” Keels and Marcus Rutledge Jr., all of Youngstown; and nieces Courtney Shivers, with whom he resided, and Amani and Bryanna Shivers, both of Maryland. He will be deeply missed by his special friend, Lenoras Smith, relatives and friends.

Gone ahead to rest in eternal peace are his grandparents, Albert and Lila Miller Sr., grandfather Eddie “Ted” Castle; his father; stepfather John Shelton; uncle Robert “Bunny” Miller; and niece Kendall “Mah Mah” Roller.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 351 W. Rayen Ave. in Youngstown.

Family will receive friends until the hour of the service, from 10 to 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Prince officiating.

James E. Sullivan, 87

SOUTH PASADENA, FLA. – James E. Sullivan, 87, formerly of Canfield, passed away June 4, 2009.

He was a graduate of South High School and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

He served in the U.S. Army as a Captain in Military Intelligence in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was Director of Development and Real Estate for the national fast food restaurant chain Red Barn Systems. He was an avid golfer and was a member of Tippecanoe and Youngstown Country Clubs

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Beverly Lewis; sons Gary and wife Janet and Terry and wife Ellen; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Patrick, Jennifer and Christina.

Elvina “Skinny” Tareshawty

POLAND – Elvina “Skinny” Tareshawty of Jupiter, Fla. and Poland, passed away on June 4, 2009 at Hospice House, surrounded by her family, after a courageous five year battle with neurovascular disease. She was 78 years old.

She born in Youngstown on Aug. 3, 1930, a daughter of Lucia Saccorsi and Sante D’Appollonio.

Skinny lived in Youngstown for 58 years before moving to Poland in 1990. She was a 1949 graduate of The Rayen School.

She married her high school sweetheart, Eugene Tareshawty on June 30, 1951 and they created their much loved family.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Eugene; her four children, Sandra Williamson, Darlene Heckman of Mesquite, Nev., Camille (John Kyd) Tareshawty of Hermosa Beach, Calif. and Dr. Eugene Jr. (Rebecca) Tareshawty; her loving sister-in-law, Veneta Tareshawty; and her grandchildren, Lisa McCann, John Micheal Pushcar, Charles Tareshawty, Jennifer Tareshawty, Tyler Heckman and Angela Heckman. She also leaves her brother, Joseph (Julie) Dapple of North Borough, Mass. and four great-grandsons.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Angelo D’Appollonio and a niece, Gloria Jean Tentes.

Skinny loved her family and was a master cookie maker. She was an avid golfer at Oaktree Country Club and at Fonderlac Country Club. She was a member of La Petite Fleur Garden Club and Liberty Belles Garden Club. She also was a member of St. Monica’s Guild of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, St. Edwards Confraternity of Christian Mothers and the Auxiliary of the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She was a member of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers Women’s Auxiliary and Women’s Auxiliary of the Youngstown Jaycees.

Skinny generously contributed her time and boundless energy toward charitable organizations. She was active with St. Elizabeth Health Center, serving as chairman of the annual Junior Guild Christmas Charity Ball. She was a member of the Youngstown Symphony Guild and chaired the Youngstown Symphony Ball and Dream Makers. She then became a charter member of the Angel of Easter Seals in 1977, and was a driving force behind the Angels cookbook projects. She was the president of the Angels in 1993, and chaired the Festival of Trees for several years, helping to increase their charitable income to new levels. In 1992, she was voted YWCA Woman of the Year. She occasionally cooked supper for her husband.

Edna Mae Thomas, 93

YOUNGSTOWN – Private services were held for Edna Mae Thomas, 93, who passed away Tuesday evening, June 2, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Edna was born Oct. 20, 1915 in Youngstown, the daughter of Wilmer W. and Dolly (Tryon) Cleverly. She was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Chaney High School class of 1933.

Edna worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for Highway Machinery for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing cards, as well as walking her dogs.

Her husband, Myron W. Thomas, whom she married in 1941, passed away in 1951.

Edna leaves one son, Myron and his wife, Kathleen of Canfield; two grandchildren, Lisa Price and her husband, Richard of Salem and Scott Thomas of Canfield; and one great-granddaughter, Brenna Price of Salem.

Besides her parents and husband, Edna was also preceded in death by two brothers, William W. and Harold C. Cleverly; and one sister, Esther Wormley.

There were no calling hours.

Gladys Thomas, 87

FORT WAYNE, IND. – Gladys Thomas, 87, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Fort Wayne.

Born in Youngstown, she worked as a secretary with Ohio Ballbearing for 15 years.

Surviving are her son, John Thomas of Larurel, Md.; daughter, Penny Blattman of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Thomas, in 1979.

There will be a committal service, at 2 p.m. June 13 at Green Haven Cemetery Chapel in Canfield.

William Vegh

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held for William Vegh at noon on Monday, June 8, at El Emeth Synagogue, 3970 Logan Way in Youngstown, followed by graveside services at El Emeth Cemetery on Granada Ave. in Youngstown.

He was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Apsa, Czechoslovakia, son of Abraham and Sura Vegh.

He died peacefully Friday evening in his home, surrounded by his family.

Besides his wife Lucille, whom he married on June 29, 1952, he leaves three children, Judy Joffe of Natick, Mass., Rochelle Miller (Sam), of Liberty Township, Marc Vegh (Lisa) of Midwest City, Okla. He also leaves a brother, Herman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Leah, Brian, Seth, Cara, Cameron, Khale and Mikhal; and one great-grandson, Caden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and one sister.

He was a survivor of the Holocaust, where his mother, sister and four brothers perished. He was in Auschwitz and other concentration camps, prior to being liberated by Allied Forces. He came to the United States in 1948. He worked at Saramar Aluminum in Warren for 38 years, and also at U.S. Extrusion. After his retirement, he dedicated his life to educating both children and adults about the Holocaust. He spoke about his personal experience to over 150 audiences, including various schools, synagogues and churches.

He received various awards including the Marvin and Sarah Itts Award for Distinguished Community Service, B’Nai Brith Guardian of the Menorah, J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award, Heroes of Mahoning Valley/American Red Cross, the Janusz Korczak Humanitarian Award, the 2000 Triumphant Spirit Award and was an Honoree of the Youngstown Area Fraternal Brotherhood.

His story is documented in the Steven Spielberg Shoah Foundation.

Bill’s mission was to share his story with young people so that generations to come would know the story of the Holocaust. Over the years, Bill had received thousands of letters of appreciation from students whose lives have been forever changed by his presence. His soft-spoken and humble personality touched many people.

He was very active in the El Emeth Synagogue, where he attended services on a daily basis. His synagogue was an integral part of his life, where he helped lead services and served on its Board of Directors.
