Michael P. Appugliese, 48

YOUNGSTOWN – Michael P. Appugliese, 48, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009.

He was born Aug. 27, 1960 in Youngstown, the son of Gabe and Marie (Castor) Appugliese of Youngstown.

He was the husband of Cari (McCaulley) Appugliese of Youngstown, whom he married May 11, 2009.

Family includes his wife; his mother and father. He was a very loving father to his five children, Devyn Appugliese, Treva Appugliese, Mia Appugliese, Michaelina Appugliese and Michael Appugliese, all of Youngstown; six sisters, Kathy Appugliese of Youngstown, Terry (Chuck) Fagan of Youngstown, Tina (Kip) Kistler of North Carolina, Marie Humphryes of Youngstown, Jenny Appugliese of Youngstown and Phyllis (David) Schaab of Canfield; two brothers, Gabe (Laurie) Appugliese of Youngstown and Bernie Appugliese of Youngstown.

He was a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and Kent State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in health care administrations. He was a self-employed heath care consultant.

Freda E. Benish, 93

NEW MIDDLETOWN - Freda E. Benish, 93, formerly of Austintown, passed away early Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2009, at her home.

Freda was born March 6, 1916 in Rankin, Pa., a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Dravec, and moved to this area with her family as a child.

Freda was a 1934 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, married Andrew Benish in April of 1937, and became a homemaker. Her husband passed away July 3, 2002.

Mrs. Benish leaves her daughter, Audrey (Louis) Brumbaugh of Columbiana; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Dan) Davanzo of Lowellville and Paul Jr. (Darlene) Strawbridge of Struthers; and a sister, Ethel Crissman of Port Richey, Fla.

Besides her husband, a grandson, Jeffrey Strawbridge; a brother, Joseph Dravec; and a sister, Irene M. Rodger Loris, are also deceased.

There are no calling hours or services.

Elva L. Bergman, 97

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the Shriver-Allison-Courtley-Weller-King Funeral Home for Elva L. Bergman, 97, who died Sunday evening at Park Vista.

Miss Bergman was born Nov. 29, 1911 in Youngstown, a daughter of Herman J. and Mollie Birkolz Bergman and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Elva was an accountant for WFMJ radio for many years.

She was a graduate of The Rayen School in 1929, attended Youngstown State University, a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid Society, a Sunday school teacher and an organist.

Among others, she leaves her friend, Loretta Latronico.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.

William D. Froehlish, 96

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home with Rev. Msgr. John Zuraw of the Immaculate Conception Church celebrating for William D. Froehlish, 96, who passed away Sunday evening, June 7.

William was born Dec. 12, 1912 in Cleveland, the son of Michael and Katherine (Doscher) Froehlish.

He worked for Borden Dairy, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, its Senior Citizens group and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

His wife, the former Agnes Marie Drabitski Kambic, whom he married Oct. 16, 1971, passed away Oct. 27, 2002.

He is survived by a stepson, Frank M. (JoAnn) Kambic of Youngstown; a stepgranddaughter, Francine Kambic of Alpharetta, Ga.; and sister-in-law, Rose Froehlich of North Royalton.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Louise Blecth, Evelyn Hanna and Betty Sumgi; and two brothers, Frederick and John Froehlich.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to the time of services on Thursday, June 11, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave., Boardman Chapel.

Margaret Magdalene Geidans, 71


CAMPBELL – Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, in loving memory of, Margaret Magdalene Geidans, 71, who passed away Saturday evening at the Hospice House.

Margaret was born June 7, 1937 in Youngstown, the daughter of Michael and Sophie Konchok Allinos and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1954 graduate of Youngstown North Side High School. She retired in 2004 from St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was a financial cashier for 30 years. She was a member of the church.

Margaret leaves to cherish her memory, her son and daughter-in-law, Rudy and Judith Geidans; two grandsons, Christopher and Benjamin Geidans; a brother, Manuel Allinos; a sister, Diane Yavorcik; her stepmother, Anastacia Allinos; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Hospice House for the excellent care they provided to Margaret.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice House will be accepted at the funeral home.

The Geidans family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service officiated by Father Steve Denas, and from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Edward Adam Janosko, 70

HERMITAGE, PA. – Edward Adam Janosko, 70, of 799 Karen Lane, passed away unexpectedly at his residence Saturday morning, June 6, 2009.

Ed was born Jan. 1, 1939 to Adam and Anna Senchisin Janosko in Farrell, Pa.

A lifelong area resident, he was a member of Farrell High School’s graduating class of 1957 and was proud to have been a member of several state championship teams under Farrell’s renowned coach, E.J. McCluskey. He matriculated to Gannon University in Erie, Pa., where in 1961, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He would continue his studies at Gannon where he later earned two masters degrees in criminology and guidance counseling.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Sharon, Pa.

Completing his advanced ROTC training, he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga. Completing military police officers course, he was then assigned as Security Platoon Leader at Fort Ritchie, Md.

Upon promotion to First Lieutenant, he attended and completed a Spanish interpreter course from the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, Calif.. He was then assigned to the 550th Military Police Detachment, 8th Special Forces Group, in Panama. Upon transfer to the States, he became Adjutant to the Military Police Group at Fort George Meade, Md. He was promoted to captain in 1965 and remained with the U.S. Army Reserves until 1971.

Later, he worked as a criminal justice planner for the Pennsylvania Commission of Crime and Delinquency, administrative assistant to the Warden at the Pennsylvania State Regional Correctional Institution in Mercer Pa. He was a parole officer for the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole from 1984 until his retirement in 1997.

After retirement, he volunteered in community services and enjoyed his time spent beautifying the greens at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Hermitage.

An outdoorsman, Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing and he particularly enjoyed his special trips to Canada with his lifelong friends.

Currently he was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6233 in West Middlesex, Pa., American Legion Post 299 in Sharon, Fraternal Order of Police Bucktail Lodge No. 96 in Sharon, and several hunting and fishing organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Scarsella Janosko, whom he married on June 8, 1963 and their daughter, Anne Marie Janosko of Hermitage. He had so much love and concern for his grandchildren, Nick and Gina Marie Kovacevic. Also surviving is his sister, Irene Janosko Bresky and her husband, Richard of Hubbard; a brother, John Janosko and his wife, Laura; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Astone of Hermitage; and many special nieces, nephews, good buddies and his godchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Janosko Astone.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Entombment will be at St. Rose Cemetery Mausoleum in Hermitage. The honor guard from the VFW Post 6233 in West Middlesex and American Legion Post 432 in Wheatland, Pa. will provide full military honors at the cemetery.

Thomas J. Julian, 60

YOUNGSTOWN – Thomas J. Julian, 60, died Saturday morning at his home in Youngstown.

Mr. Julian was born Sept. 6, 1948 in Youngstown, the son of Michael S. Julian and Carmel M. Alberti.

He was a 1967 graduate of Ursuline High School and worked for Magnolia’s Gas Station in Cornersburg as an auto mechanic.

Among others, he leaves his mother of Youngstown, Carmel M. (Alberti) Julian; three brothers, Carmen (Loretta) of Youngstown, Michael (Josephine) of Massillon and Peter (Eleanor) of Brookfield; and a sister, Marie (Donald) Ronyak of Boardman.

He also leaves his beloved nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much, Mark Julian of Sunrise, Fla., Deborah (Rick) Rouan of Austintown, Denise Malkovits (Steve) of Canfield, Donald Ronyak Jr. (Marisa) of Denver, Colo., Melissa Marrie (Robert) of Poland and David Ronyak (Amanda) of Canfield. He also leaves his great-nephews, Sean Rouan and Stephen Malkovits; and a great-niece, Isabella Marrie.

He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Kelly Kaden Ezzo of Youngstown, Sean Kaden and Jay Kaden of Florida; and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Kaden Hutch; his father, Michael; a brother, Alfonso; and a great-niece, Amanda Marie Ferraro.

Tommy was a kind and generous person, who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to thank the staff and doctors of Forum Health Northside Medical Center for their help and the staff of Southern Care Hospice for their tender loving care during Tom’s illness.

Contributions can be made to the Southern Care Hospice and the Amanda Marie Ferraro Scholarship Fund at Fitch High School.

Louis Laney Jr., 76

YOUNGSTOWN – Mr. Louis Laney, Jr., 76, departed this life on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the Caprice Health Care Center in North Lima.

Mr. Laney was born May 15, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Louis and Henrietta Bain Laney.

He attended the former East High School and was employed as a chipper with the Valley Mould Iron and Steel in Hubbard, retiring in 1990, after 36 years of service.

He was a dedicated member of the United Steel Workers of America Local 1058 and he attended Kimmelbrook Baptist Church.

He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, who enjoyed watching all football games and playing cards. His primary pastime was his daily breakfast comradeships with fellow retirees at the Market Street McDonald’s regardless of the weather and he had no hesitation to walk.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife, the former Barbara A. Carter, whom he married May 14, 1994; three sons, Louis III (Jaylana), Lamar Laney, both of Locust Grove, Ga., Lorne (Alisa) Laney of Youngstown; his daughter, Kim L. Laney; a stepson, Bernard Carter, both of Youngstown; three stepdaughters, Anna Bell of Beachwood, Aleesha and Michelle Bell, both of Youngstown; one brother, Jessie (Elaine) Williams of Akron; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; 16 grandchildren, including Eron Laney, Danielle Bell and Anthony Jones, whom he reared; two great-grandsons; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a mother, Sylvia Williams, who reared him; a son, Larry Laney; two sisters, Mary Belle Hardy and Etheline Thomas; and three brothers, Thomas “Q Ball”, Roger and Robert White.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Washington Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.

Kenneth J. “Chef Ken” McIntyre II, 52

NEW MIDDLETOWN – Arrangements for Kenneth J. “Chef Ken” McIntyre II, 52, are being handled by Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown. He passed away Sunday.

Kenneth was born July 11, 1956, in Youngstown, a son of Kenneth J. and Helen D. McIntyre I.

He married Tina Reed on July 31, 1976.

He worked for John Zidian Co. Gia Russa for over 20 years.

Kenneth leaves behind his wife, Tina; a son, Kenneth J. (Heather) McIntyre III of Ravenna; a daughter, Casey (William) Billington of Ashtabula; and two grandchildren, Harper Lee and Cole James Billington.

Kenneth was loved deeply and will be sadly missed by family, friends and coworkers.

Arthur W. Orr, 75

POLAND – There will be services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Anstrom-Velker Funeral Home in Youngstown for Arthur W. Orr, 75, who died Saturday afternoon at Allegheny General Hospital.

Mr. Orr was born Aug. 28, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Arthur S. and Bertha E. Thellman Orr.

Art was a 1951 graduate of South High School and worked for Easco Aluminum as a maintenance supervisor, retiring in 1995.

He was a member of the Christ’s Church in Boardman and was active in the valley’s Masonic bodies. Art was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 21 F. & A.M., the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown, Al Koran Shrine Temple of Cleveland, the Youngstown Shrine Club, where he served as president in 1990, and the High Twelve Club No. 720 of the Temple on the Hill. He also belonged to the Saxon Club Branch No. 30 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 213.

Art loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and fishing but he delighted most in spending time with his granddaughters.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, the former Carol Stratton, whom he married July 7, 1956; his daughters, Jody Orr of Poland and Kim (Kevin) Jamison of Salem; his sister, Peggy Goorfin of North Hollywood, Calif.; his granddaughters, Kasey and Kyla of Salem; and three nieces and two nephews.

His sister, Carolyn Grossman is deceased.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Masonic service will be at 8 p.m. Friends may also call from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service Thursday.

James Oliver Payne, 61

NEW CASTLE, PA. – James Oliver Payne, 61, of 3040 McClelland Ave., transitioned to Glory at 9 a.m. on June 6, 2009, at Sentura Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Va.

He was born Oct. 31, 1947 and was married for 40 years to his college sweetheart, Octavia Clark Payne on March 11, 1969.

James O. also known as “Jimmy” or “Jedi Payne,” was a lifelong area resident and graduated from New Castle Senior High School in 1966. James received his bachelor’s in Secondary Education: History from Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tenn., in 1971. He received his Social Studies Certification from Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock, Pa., in 1978 and graduate work in Computer Courses from Clarion University, Clarion, Pa., in 1985.

James was a well respected, retired educator with the New Castle Area School District. He had been with the district for 35 years.

James was a natural leader, devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He had a passion for golf, orchid growing, video games, computers, fishing and enjoyed traveling with his wife.

James was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where the Pastor is the Rev. Dr. Ray Hylton.

He leaves to cherish his memory Octavia Clark Payne, his loving wife; one daughter, Professor Ursula Octavia Payne of New Castle; two sisters, Brenda Brownfield of Chicago and Betty Payne of New Castle; five brothers, Leonard, Robert and Clinton Payne, all of New Castle, Lawrence Payne of Chicago and William Payne of Rimersburg, Pa.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

James was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Betty and Robert Payne; father and stepmother, DVM Lanxter and Martha Webber; and his son, Lanxter Payne.

Viewing will be Thursday, June 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill St. in New Castle.

Funeral service will be Friday, June 12, at the First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ray Hylton.

Herbert L. Shaffer Jr., 52

INTERLACHEN, FLA. – Herbert L. Shaffer Jr., 52, formerly of Youngstown, said goodbye to his family at his home in Florida just hours before passing peacefully on June 2, 2009 after a long illness.

He was born April 7, 1957 in Youngstown, a son of Herb and Elaine Shaffer.

Herb has touched the lives of everyone that came to know him either as a loving friend or through his 30 year career in the auto parts business. Herb worked for Parts World in Niles, Tom’s Automotive in Girard and Car Quest in Florida.

His love of sports brought tremendous joy to his life. He had been a Rams fan since the age of 10. He played baseball in Little League and Pony League, as well as coaching his daughter in baseball in Girard.

Herb was also an avid golf fan, playing as well, and had a motorcycle that he and his wife enjoyed riding.

Cherished memories will be carried on by his beloved wife, Beverly, whom he married Oct. 20, 2003; his parents, Herb and Elaine of Austintown; his daughter, Jaclyn Shaffer and fiance, Brian Sheck of Tallmadge; three sisters, Debbie Fleming of Austintown, Cathy (Mike) D'Andrea of Niles and Cheryl (Ken) Conti of Austintown; stepchildren, Jennifer (Rich) Van Der Snell, Lori Bateman and Dustin Bateman; and loving nieces, nephews and step grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Western Reserve United Methodist Church, Route 62 in Canfield at 11 a.m. on June 13, 2009.

Patricia A. Skiffey, 67

NILES – Patricia A. Skiffey, 67, died at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born Jan. 13, 1942 in Youngstown, the daughter of David A. and Mary Volinsky Altiero Sr.

She was a 1959 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and a 1960 graduate of The Lewis, Weinberger, and Hill Cosmetology School in downtown Youngstown.

She was employed as office manager for her husband, Dr. James J. Skiffey’s dental office in Niles for 40 years.

She was a member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles and the White House Ladies. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going out with friends, golfing, and vacationing in Florida, especially Naples in the wintertime.

Patti, who always said people will remember you how they saw you last, will be deeply missed by her husband, Dr. James J. Skiffey Jr., whom she married June 26, 1965; a son, James J. Skiffey III and his wife, Marcella of Howland; a daughter, Justine Neopolitan and her husband, Dr. Michael of Niles; two brothers, David A. Altiero Jr. and his wife, Jeanne of Columbus and Joseph Altiero and his wife, Lorainne of Niles; and five grandchildren, Lauren, Michael, Nicholas, Anna and Eleni.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niles, with Fr. Larry Frient officiating, preceded by a 12:30 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Niles City Cemetery.

Susan J. “Susie B” Blevins-Thomas, 67

WARREN – Susan J. “Susie B” Blevins-Thomas, 67, went home to be with the Lord at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Hospice House surrounded by her family, after fighting a courageous three month battle with lung cancer.

Susie was born Feb. 26, 1942 in Cleveland, the daughter of the late Cecil and Dorothy (Trobridge) Walker and graduated from John Marshall High School.

Susie retired on April 1, 2002 from General Electric Ohio Lamp Plant in Warren, where she worked from more than 35 years as a high lift driver in shipping.

Susie was a talented artist in drawing and acrylic painting. She enjoyed flower gardening and was a lover of animals. Most especially, she was proud of her two daughters and all of her grandchildren and showed them all great love.

Susie is survived by her husband, Edwin P. Thomas Jr., whom she married July 5, 1996; two daughters, Kimberly Raye (Timothy) Fenstermaker of Cortland and Tracy Lynne McElravy of Warren; sisters, Kathleen Silvestro of Cleveland and Debbie (John) Cash of Warren; a brother, William “JB” (Brenda) Pease of Clover, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Justin Robert (Michelle) Kaszowski, a funeral director with the Lane Funeral Homes; Amanda Raye (Ryan Cole) Fenstermaker, Matthew Rhea McElravy, Christopher Dean Fenstermaker, Kaitlynn Marie Fenstermaker, Jacob Dean Fenstermaker and Chase William McElravy; four stepchildren, David Ralph Thomas of Warren, Michael Allen Thomas of Atlanta, Candy Lynn Thomas of Chicago, Cassandra Dawn Thomas of Portage, Ind.; an adopted son, Anthony Joseph “TJ” (Katherine) Kaleta of Austintown; a special and dear friend of more than 30 years, Raymond Chiles of Pennsylvania; a close friend, Bradley Markel; and three nephews and by a host of friends.

Besides her parents, Susie was preceded in death by her second husband, whom she married on July 29, 1971, James “Billy B” Blevins, past president of Warren Chapter of Outlaw Motorcycle Club, who was killed June 9, 1979.

Family will receive friends Thursday, June 11, 2009, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Roberts Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive N.E. in Warren.

A funeral service will be conducted with the Rev. John R. Selders on Friday, June 12, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.

The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations in Susie’s name to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
