Virginia Morgan “Ginny” Alcroft, 84

CANFIELD – Virginia Morgan “Ginny” Alcroft, 84, passed away peacefully June 12, 2009.

Virginia was born in Youngstown to David and Ruth Morgan on Sept. 21, 1924.

Ginny will be sadly missed by her husband of 62 years, James, and three children, son Jamie Alcroft and daughter-in-law Sarah Kawahara of West Lake Village, Calif., daughter Cynthia Alcroft and son-in-law David Murdoch of Canfield and daughter Linda Alcroft and son-in-law Kevin Kindberg of Cranbury, N.J.

She also leaves nine grandchildren, David, Taylor and Jason Murdoch, Alysse, Hayley, and Thatcher Alcroft, and Morgan, Abigail and Madison Kindberg.

Ginny was a 1942 graduate of The Rayen School and attended Youngstown College. Ginny lived a very full life, enjoying travel, and making homes for her family in Ohio, England, Arkansas, New Jersey and North Carolina.

Friends may visit the family from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, where a memorial service will be held at 6 p.m.

Esther Mae Bader, 85

LOWELLVILLE - Esther Mae Bader, 85, died of complications due to a stroke Wednesday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Esther was born May 7, 1924, in Fairview, Pa., a daughter of Howard and Ethel Wright Dawson. She was raised in Pennsylvania and moved to this area after World War II.

She was a graduate of Mt. Jackson High School in Mt. Jackson, Pa., and received her degree as a Registered Nurse from Youngstown State University.

Esther worked at Warren General Hospital, where she retired as night supervisor. During World War II, Esther was a welder in Midland.

She was an avid quilter and reader, enjoyed gardening and loved flowers. Most of all, Esther loved spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Boardman.

Her husband, James Frederick Bader, whom she married Sept. 12, 1943, died July 2, 1968.

She leaves three daughters, Patricia A. Heim of Struthers, Priscilla Stinson of New Middletown and Phyllis (Kenneth Leo) Wagner of Lowellville; a son, James (Patricia) Bader Jr. of Berlin Center; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by a son, Gene Dawson Bader; five brothers and three sisters.

Services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, with Pastor Pete Haenftling officiating. Interment will follow on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Petersburg Cemetery in Petersburg.

Friends will be received Tuesday from 5 to 6:45 p.m. at the funeral home in Struthers.

Violet Mae Crisan, 82

BROOKFIELD – Violet Mae Crisan, 82, passed away peacefully at 8 a.m. Friday, June 12, 2009, at Hospice House in Poland surrounded by her loving family. 

Ms. Crisan was born May 13, 1927, in Masury to Nicholas and Anna (Dragucescu) Filipovich Sr.

A 1945 graduate of Brookfield High School, Violet spent the majority of her life as a kind and compassionate caregiver to many people of all ages, especially children. She was most affectionately known as “Dood” by those who loved her and the children that she cared for. She will be most remembered for her strong spirit and pleasant smile and as a loving mother and grandmother.

When not caring for others, Violet enjoyed reading, swimming, walking and gardening and loved to feed and watch the birds. She was also famous for her cooking and baking skills, especially her nut rolls and ricotta cheese rolls that were holiday favorites that everyone would look forward to enjoying. Violet was of the Catholic faith and had attended Sacred Heart Church in Sharon, Pa., for many years.

Ms. Crisan is survived by her two sons, Stephen Crisan and wife Bonnie of Pickerington and Michael Crisan and wife Laurie of Poland; her daughter, Linda Livingston of Hubbard; six grandchildren, Merielle, Ryan, Travis, Joelle, Emily and Rachelle; two brothers, Charles Filipovich of Masury and John Filipovich of Boardman. She is survived as well by some very special nieces and nephews who are too numerous to name.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her four brothers, Joseph, Rudolph, Nick and Stephen Filipovich; and her sister, Helen Crisan.

Calling hours will be held Monday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield, where a funeral service will begin at 6 p.m.

Burial will be at Brookfield Township Cemetery.

 The family also suggests that contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or to the Brookfield Library.

George T. Dardes, 81

HILLSVILLE, PA. – George T. Dardes, 81, of Quaker Heights Road, died the morning of Saturday, June 13, 2009, in St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Mr. Dardes was born June 27, 1927 in Hillsville, a son of the late Donato and Grace Dardes.

His wife, the former Patricia Ross, whom he married May 4, 1957, survives.

Mr. Dardes retired form the Campbell Works of the LTV Steel Corporation, where he was turn foreman with 32 years of service. He was a member of St. Lawrence Church of Christ the King Parish and enjoyed attending flea markets and casinos.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carol Dardes of Bessemer, Pa.; a son, Anthony Dardes and wife Lisa of Moon Township, Pa.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Dardes, and a sister, Florence Diana.

Visitation is Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road in New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Church of Christ the King Parish, conducted by the Rev. Fr. Frank Erdeljac.

The procession will leave the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. for the church on Tuesday.

Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Donald Lloyd Dawson, 85

NOVI, MICH. – Donald Lloyd Dawson, 85, died on Friday, May 29, 2009, at Renaissance Gardens at Fox Run in Novi.

He was born in Youngstown on July 22, 1923, the son of Wesley J. and Emma Dawson.

Donald is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois Poirier Dawson; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Ruth Dawson, married 64 years, of Wexford, Pa., and Gene and Nancy Dawson, married 63 years, of Largo, Fla.; his son and wife, Walter and Laura Dawson; his daughters and husbands, Laura and Jack Keaton and Donna and Gary Rinkenberger; eight grandchildren, Michael (Julie) Keaton, Owen (Nicole) Keaton, Kristan (Kirk) LaFon, David (Megan) Dawson, Gregory Dawson, Aryn (Tim) Shillair, Brenda (John) Wilshire and Bryce Rinkenberger; and six great-grandchildren.

Don was a member of his high school National Honorary Society. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Don was an accountant for General Motors for 41 years. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and for 58 years a member of the First United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Mich., where for some years he sang in the choir and helped with their financial records. For some time too, he was the District representative for the Church Boy Scout Troop B-32. He and his wife were avid square dancers.

Jerome F. “Jerry” Heckel Jr., 84

OCALA, FLA. – Mr. Jerome F. “Jerry” Heckel Jr., 84, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala.

He was born in Dayton and moved to Ocala in 1982 from Salem, where he was a supervisor at A&P in both the Salem and Youngstown areas with more than 30 years of service. He was a graduate of Youngstown State University and also served in the U.S. Air Force during both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie of Ocala; two sons; two daughters; a brother; a sister; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He will be laid to rest at a later date in Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Ocala.


Evy G. Krieger, 84

ARIZONA – Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Covenant Church for Evy G. Krieger, 84, who passed away Thursday.

Mrs. Krieger was born April 11, 1925, in Halmstad, Sweden, a daughter of Enoch and Olga Johnson Swanson.

She graduated from Bessemer High School and had worked as a secretary for Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad for 30 years.

She was a member of the church and Harmony Lodge.

Surviving her are a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Linda Krieger of Boardman; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and David Wartenberg of Phoenix; a stepson, William of Michigan; a sister, Britt Pope; a sister-in-law, Betty Swanson; four grandsons, Michael and Patrick Krieger and Andrew and Tim Wartenberg; and six nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death besides her parents were a sister, Judy Samuelson; and two brothers, Evar Swanson and Gunnard Swanson.

She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by her family and friends.

Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Dr. Raymond Morris Lupse, 64

GASTONIA, NC – Dr. Raymond Morris Lupse, 64, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009.

Ray was born in Youngstown Aug., 23, 1944, a son of the late Dr. Raymond Simon Lupse and Martha Morris Lupse.

He graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1962 and was a former member of the Poland United Methodist Church.

He received his Bachelor of Science in 1966 at Ohio University, Athens, OH. He then attended George Washington University where he earned his Master of Science in 1968, Master of Philosophy in 1972, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1973. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine in 1977 at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Lupse published various papers during his residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA, his fellowship at The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and while serving on the faculty at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He also completed pre-doctoral research at the University of Gottingen: Institute of Animal Genetics, Gottingen, Germany in 1970 and doctoral research at Agricultural Research Council, Unit of Reproductive Physiology and Biochemistry, Cambridge, England in 1972 to 1973. Throughout his career he served on numerous committees both as a professional and as a community leader.

Dr. Lupse was in private practice in Gastonia, NC, serving patients in Gynecology, Gynecologic Surgery, and Gynecologic Oncology Surgery from 1988 to 2008 and was a member of active staff at Gaston Memorial Hospital during that period. He was proud to be elected Chief of Staff and a member of the Board of Directors from 1999 to 2001. In 2009, he was also elected to the Emeritus Medical Staff and Honorary Staff, a designation for physicians of outstanding reputation. Although he had retired from his medical practice last summer, he spent the last several months serving patients at the Cleveland County Health Department in Shelby, NC.

Ray avidly enjoyed fly fishing, boating and photography and was a longtime member of the Rockwell Springs Trout Club and the Duquesne Hunting and Fishing Club. Starting in childhood and throughout his married life, his most memorable family vacations were spent at Lake Chautauqua, NY.

Ray is survived by his wife, the former Judith Carol Weaver, whom he married Jan. 6, 1979; his daughter, Ashleigh of New York; his son, Raymond, Jr. of Gastonia; and his sister, Linda Lupse of Youngstown.

A memorial service was held in Gastonia, NC, at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, June 7, and the family received friends following the service. Ray’s wife, Judy, will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, at Dr. Lupse’s childhood family residence, which is now the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St. in Poland, OH.

Melviena E. “Mel” Nicholls, 83

YOUNGSTOWN – Melviena E. “Mel” Nicholls, 83, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 6, 2009, at the Hospice House surrounded by dear friends.

Mel was born July 17, 1925, in Bruceton, Pa., in Allegheny County, a daughter of Emidio and  Maria Galie Feliziani.

She attended Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh. Mel resided in Pittsburgh until moving to Youngstown in 1970.

She enjoyed traveling. Among her travels were Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Netherlands, Hawaii, London, Italy, Spain, Canada, France and the Caribbean. She also loved the theater and the Arts, reading, music, gardening, baking and reading her Bible.

She was employed by the United State Bureau of Mines as a high-explosive tester. She was awarded a citation for her contribution to the Manhattan Project. She also worked in the restaurant business for over 45 years at Royal York Dining Room in Pittsburgh, Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., South Hills Country Club in Pittsburgh, Somebody’s Restaurant and the Upstairs Restaurant in Austintown.

Her husband, Nelson C. Nicholls, whom she married Sept. 29, 1951, is deceased.

Mel leaves behind her many dear friends who she considered her “family,” along with longtime extended family members, Hilda and Arthur Raffalle and family of Pittsburgh.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother and sister-in-law, Emidio Paul and Marie Feliziani; and  twin baby sisters.

Melviena, through her friends, would like to extend her deep gratitude and many thanks to the staff at St. Elizabeth Health Center for the compassionate care she received over the years as well as the staff at Hospice House.

Laverna Raseta, 86

HUBBARD – Laverna Raseta, 86, died suddenly on Thursday. She had been a resident at Liberty Assisted Living Center since November 2008.

Mrs. Raseta was born April 9, 1923, in Hubbard, a daughter of William O. and Henrietta Maguire Stiver, and was a lifelong resident of Hubbard.

Mrs. Raseta was a 1941 graduate of Hubbard High School. During World War II, she worked as an inspector at the Sharon Steel Corporation. She later worked at Harvell's in Hubbard, drove school bus for the Brookfield School District for 16 years and was a licensed cosmetologist who owner her own beauty shop.

She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Hubbard and its Up and Going Sunday school class. She enjoyed ceramics, baking and winters in Jensen Beach, Fla.

Her husband, Nicholas Raseta, whom she married Nov. 10, 1943, died Nov. 14, 2003.

She leaves one son, Thomas G. (Marla) Raseta Sr. of Liberty; two daughters, Kathy Link of Stevensville, Md., and Sharen Inskeep of Hubbard; five grandchildren, Laura (John) Maximovich of Dublin, Thomas (Sheri) Raseta of Hubbard, Dr. Patricia Link, DVM, of Estelle Manor, N.J., Michael Inskeep of Henderson, Nev., and Dr. Kelley (Joshua) Simms of Columbia, Md.; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Margaret Stiver, Barbara Seavers, Catherine Simmons, Myrtle Gray, Gladys Edwards, and Lillian Ellis; and one brother, James Stiver.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home in Hubbard.

William E. Reagan, 83

FAIRLAWN – William E. Reagan, 83, loving husband and father, died June 11, 2009, at the Village at St. Edward. 

“Bill” Reagan grew up in Youngstown, the son of Edgar and Marie Reagan.

He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1943 and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married the love of his life, Louise McDermott on June 11, 1949, and graduated the following year from John Carroll University with Honors. While at John Carroll University, Bill was selected for the 1950 “Who’s Who of American Students.”

Bill and Louise raised seven children. After working multiple jobs to support the family, Bill began a career at IBM, where he was one of the most successful salespersons in the company. Bill’s outgoing Irish personality served him quite well in his personal and professional lives.

His 28-year IBM career took the family to Cleveland and then to Akron in 1974. He retired from IBM in 1988. Following his retirement, Bill became even more involved with his charitable work and St. Hilary Parish. He served as President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for six years. He also assisted the St. Hilary’s pastor in a number of roles including as a regular Sunday usher and a server during weekday Masses.

Bill also enjoyed golfing with his sons and participating in the St. Hilary Golf League for more than 30 years, accomplishing two holes-in-one in the process.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Louise, and his seven children, Mary Anne Coughlin (Marty), William Reagan Jr., Donald Reagan (Peggy), Janie Howe (Bill), Nancy Finn (Jeff), Susan O’Neil (Jim) and Peter Reagan (Maggie). He also leaves behind 22 loved grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bill’s brother, Msgr. Donald Reagan, and his sister, Kathleen Manning, preceded him in death, and he is survived by his brother, Jack Reagan.

Bill’s family greatly appreciates the support they have received from The Village at St. Edward community. In addition, a special Thank-You to the “angels” who have cared for Bill and Louise over the past few years, enriching their lives on a daily lives.

Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Road, Fairlawn, OH 44333.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Hilary Catholic Church.

Carlos L. Stewart, 77

CANFIELD – Carlos L. Stewart, 77, died Friday afternoon, June 12, 2009, at Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville.

He was born on April 25, 1932, in Rogers, the son of the late Roy V. and Rena M. (Vaughn) Stewart.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War.

He will be missed by his wife, Barbara of Canfield; their children, Jeffrey (Amy Mendenhall) Stewart of Boardman, Gregory Stewart of Canfield, Jonathan (Lori) Stewart of Pickerington and Yvonne (Robert) Kinsella of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren, Rebecca and Caitlyn Stewart, Ethan, Zachary, Alexander, and Seth Butterfield, Riley and Regan Stewart, and Lacie Kinsella; and a sister, Gene Carlson of Salem.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Marie Augustine, Ida Stockman, and Clara Rosenbaum.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Joseph John Thomas, 83

AVENUTURA, FLA. – Joseph John Thomas, 83, formerly of Youngstown, passed on to glory on March 10, 2009.

He was born May 23, 1925, to Andrew and Mary T. (Dulic) Tomaskovic in Youngstown.

Joseph attended the Holy Name Church and School and graduated from Chaney High School.

He worked for Truscon Steel Co. as a crane operator before becoming an electrician, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union No. 64 and the Slovak Catholic Sokol Wreath No. 132.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Eleanor DePerro; one daughter, Lorilee (Thomas) Amedia; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Miami Beach, Fla.; and siblings John Thomas of Chicago, Ann (Dukish) Gergel, Frances (Thomas) Gerish and Bob Tomaskovic, all of the Youngstown area.

He was preceded into eternal life by siblings Martin Thomas, Mary Pat (Thomas) Sudetic, Helen (Thomas) Zelinka and Raymond Thomas.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

Blanche Ventresco, 87

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Charles Church in Boardman, with the Rev Shawn Conoboy officiating for Blanche Ventresco, 87, who peacefully passed away at the Hospice House on Saturday morning, June 13, 2009, with her loving family by her side.

She was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Verona, Italy, and immigrated to the United States and settled in Smokey Hollow area of Youngstown in 1927. Blanche was the daughter of James and Maria (Bassi) Santangelo.

She was employed at Strouss’s Department Store in central wrapping and then was co-owner and cook at the Tel-Star Lounge for 20 years.

Blanche was a member of St. Charles Church, and a former officer of the Quota Club, Lowellville PTA, and CCD Teacher at the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville.

She was a graduate of South High School, and enjoyed reading, playing cards, hand held poker games, and bingo. Blanche also enjoyed going on gambling junkets, but she especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

Blanche was a beautiful woman inside and out and the love she shared with her family, friends, and community will live on and never be forgotten.

Her husband, Perry A. Ventresco Sr., whom she married May 8, 1943, died April 16, 2001.

She leaves behind to hold onto her precious memories, her children Perry A. (Denise) Ventresco Jr. of Poland, Julia M. (Charles E.) Craig of Howland, Joseph M. (Linda T.) Ventresco Sr. of Youngstown and Gerald P. (Nancy) Ventresco of Austintown; a daughter-in-law, Mary (Steve) Held of North Lima; 10 grandchildren, Jason Ventresco, Michelle (Anthony) Cerminaro, Charles P. (Holly) Craig, Thomas (Kym) Ventresco Jr., Amy L. Ventresco, Joseph M. (JoAnn) Ventresco Jr., Angela M. (Robert) Burnell, Anthony S. (Sarah) Ventresco, Jennifer M. (Ryan) Rager and Sara L. Ventresco; four stepgrandchildren, Kelly M. (Alessio) Caruso, Ann Marie Borowski, Laura Jonda, Lisa Premec, six great-grandchildren, Annie, Jett, Ty, Maria, Anthony and Joseph “J.T.;” three stepgreat-grandchildren, Angelo, Donielle and Ron; and two sisters, Nerina (Daniel) Donatelli and Mary Jane Lilly, both of Boardman.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas V. Ventresco Sr.; a grandson, Edward A. Craig; and two brothers, Victor Santangelo Sr. and an infant brother, Augustino Santangelo.

Friends may call on Monday, June 15, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman and again on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, from 10:30 to 11:20 a.m. at St. Charles Church, Boardman.

Burial will take place at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville.

Alyce M. Walkosak, 78

CAMPBELL – Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in The Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. in St. John Catholic Church for Alyce M. Walkosak, 78, who passed away Friday morning in Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Alyce was born Aug. 24, 1930, in Youngstown, the daughter of Michael and Anna Zackucia Turchan, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1947 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and co-owner of Walkosak Catering and retired from the Campbell City School System as the head cook at the high school.

She was a member of the church, the Cousins Club and 1418 Campbell Senior Citizens.

Her husband, Edward J. Walkosak, whom she married Aug. 16, 1952, passed away Sept. 29, 1997.

Alyce leaves to cherish her memory her two daughters, Deborah Kotheimer of Poland and Paulette (Randy) Kloes of Midland, Mich.; two sisters, Millie (Bob) Jonda of Campbell and Marge (Nickey) Secora of North Lima; four grandchildren, Erik Kotheimer of Phoenix, Ariz., Matthew Kloes of Loveland, Manda Kotheimer of Poland and Kelsey Kloes of Southfield, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Elizabeth Vargo.

Alyce’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to MVI Hospice Care for the wonderful care they gave to her.

The Walkosak family has entrusted their loved one to the care of The Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends today from 2 to 5 p.m.


Donna Rose Wasmund, 55

YOUNGSTOWN – Donna Rose Wasmund, 55, of the city’s west side, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Donna was born Sept. 17, 1953, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Richard and Leonna Wasmund, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a graduate of North High School and worked for Camelot Arms for 14 years, where she was a nurse’s aide and an activity director.

Donna was also a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed cooking. She had a natural “green thumb” when it came to her plants, and she thoroughly enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.

She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Donna leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Rodney Michael Wasmund Sr. and Jennifer Wasmund of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Rodney, Le-Anna and Jacob; and her best and lifelong friend, Alice McNeely Hoover of Youngstown.

There are no calling hours or services.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.
