Philomena M. Phyllis Barricella, 95
Together Forever
BOARDMAN - Philomena M. Phyllis Barricella, 95, passed away early Sunday afternoon, June 14, 2009, at Hospice House in Poland Township.
Philomena was born May 3, 1914 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Falco and Anna Campana Tocco, and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Barricella was a homemaker and also worked for the Youngstown Board of Education at Chaney High School and West Elementary School for 30 years.
Phyllis was a member of St. Brendan Church in Youngstown. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Samuel Barricella, whom she married in 1937, passed away in 1996.
Mrs. Barricella leaves a son, Frank Barricella of Youngstown; three daughters, Julie (Joseph) Kravec of Austintown, Donna Poulakos of Youngstown and Phyllis (Michael) Cicchillo of Boardman, with whom she made her home; nine grandchildren, Lisa, Jeffrey, Frank, Laura, Michael, Daniel, Michael S., Jason and Kelly; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Annabelle Bodnar of Columbiana; and her caregiver and companion, Barbara Thornton of Youngstown.
Phyllis will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Besides her husband, four sisters, Ada Tocco, Betty Tocco, Frances Como and Viola Pupino; and a brother, Nick Tocco, are also deceased.
Family and friends may call today, June 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.
Funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Church on Oakwood Avenue.

Elvester Betts, 90
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be Friday, June 19, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the L. E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mr. Elvester Betts, 90, who departed this life Friday, June 12, 2009, at Briarfield Manor.
Mr. Betts was born Sept. 30, 1918 in Booneville, Miss., a son of Willie and Daisy Branyon Betts.
In his early 20s, Elvester moved to St. Louis, and moved to Youngstown in the 1940s. Moving to Youngstown in the 40s proved to be a blessing for Elvester, where he met and married the former Marnine King and to this union a son was born.
During the following years, they resided in New York City and after 25 years in the Big Apple returned to Youngstown. He worked for the General Electric Company for ten years, retiring in the 1980s.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Marnine; a son, Darrell Johnson, both of Youngstown; a daughter, Eleanor Hastings of Booneville,; a sister-in-law, Susie Harris; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a devoted nephew, Willie Hall; his caregiver, Jeanna Gaitor; and a host of family and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Hall.

Carol O. Calderone, 74
CANFIELD A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Carol O. Calderone, 74, who passed away peacefully at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, in her home.
Carol was born Feb. 20, 1935 in Ashtabula, the daughter of the late Theodore and Grace (Stevens) Robison.
Carol was a graduate of Mid South Memphis Bible College. Carol was previously employed in the sales department at Strousss Department Store and WREO Radio Station in Ashtabula.
Most importantly, Carol was a homemaker and a member of the Old North Church and its choir and was very involved in the childrens ministry program at the church. She enjoyed singing, playing the piano and she centered her life around being a disciple of the Lord.
Carol is survived by her husband, Carmen J. Calderone Sr., whom she married on July 22, 1961; a son, Carmen J. Calderone Jr. of Austintown; a daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Angelilli of Poland; four grandchildren, Megan and Brittany Calderone, and Giavanna and Anthony Angelilli; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a sister, Joann Hanson.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Dr. John C. Jack Carson, M.M., C.T., 97
NILES Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown for Dr. John C. Jack Carson, M.M., C.T., 97, who died early Sunday morning at Autumn Hills Nursing Center in Niles.
He was born Oct. 12, 1911 in Croatia, a son of Charles and Rose Carson, and he came to the United .States as a young boy.
He worked for McKenzie Muffler in Youngstown during World War II making gas tanks for the U.S. Army. Later he owned and operated a hair, scalp and wig electrolysis clinic in the Dollar Bank Building in downtown Youngstown.
He was of the Catholic faith. He was also a nutritionist and he imparted his knowledge of health and wellness whenever he could.
He is survived by a son, Robert D. (Donna) Carson of Youngstown; two grandchildren, Paul and Christine; and two great-grandchildren; Tyler and Nikolas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and two brothers, Peter and Nicholas.

Marie A. Edwards, 86
NEW BEDFORD, PA Marie A. Edwards, 86, died Monday June 15, 2009, at Pembrook Place.
She was born March 16, 1923 in Hubbard, a daughter of Ralph and Angeline Pratt Perline and was a lifelong area resident.
Mrs. Edwards, a homemaker, was a member of the Victory Christian Center in Lowellville and the Barnstone Ministry in New Bedford.
Marie loved riding the big green bus to WalMart in New Castle to see all of her friends, enjoyed going to senior citizen dinners and never missed church. She took care of her entire family, loved cooking for everyone and her specialties were hot peppers and Easter bread. Grandma Meme loved and was loved by everyone that she met.
Her husband, Bursy L. Edwards, whom she married April 18, 1964, died Sept. 18, 1983.
She leaves three sons, Dave (Shay) Pittinger of New Bedford, Jack Edwards of New Bedford and Bursy Butch Edwards Jr. of Poland; four daughters, Deanna (Bruce) Findley of Lorain, Helen Harrold of New Castle, Linda Doyle of Kansas and Janet Petronek of Lowellville; two sisters, Theresa Knebel and Rose (Matt) Ashman Capezzuto, both of Hubbard; 27 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Angelo, Frank, James, Tony, Ralph and Mike Perline; three sisters, Jennie Simeone, Annie Camuso and Antonette Amicone.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Victory Christian Center.

MARSHALL, TEXAS Richard A. LaPaze, 57, a loving husband to Debra L. LaPaze, passed onto glory on June 6, 2009 in Marshall.
He was the son of Paul T. and Dora (Montanaro) LaPaze.
Richard leaves behind his loving wife and stepson, Shaun Kish; three sisters, Paula (Don) Ficke, Alice (Robert) Baker and Mary Beth (Scott) Grossen; a nephew; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas R. LaPaze.

Nancy Virginia Lawman, 76
BRADENTON, FLA. Nancy Virginia Lawman, 76, passed away on June 8, 2009 in Bradenton, where she had resided for the past eight years.
Nancy was born and raised in the Smokey Hollow area of Youngstown. She graduated from East High School, the first of 11 brothers and sisters to graduate.
She served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Nancy attended nursing school in St. Petersburg, Fla., and worked as a nurse in various area hospitals.
She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Counseling from Youngstown State University. She taught nursing at Choffin Vocational School. When living in Ohio, Nancy was actively involved in politics, serving as precinct committee women and as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. While living in Florida, Nancy served as a volunteer at Manatee Memorial Hospital.
She will be greatly missed by her husband; children; grandchildren, greatgrandchild; and many friends.
A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at St. Columbia Cathedral, 159 West Rayen Ave. at 10 a.m. on June 20.
Amelia Molly Macchio, 88
MOUNT VERNON Amelia Molly Macchio, 88, died on June 14, 2009 at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.
She was born on Jan. 23, 1921 in Matera, Italy to the late Joseph and Maria (Gorgogliano) Calavoia.
Molly was retired from Commercial Shearing Inc.
She is survived by her caretaker and nephew, Joseph (Krys) Mortellaro of Mount Vernon; great-nephew, Brian (Janine) Mortellaro of Granville; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Macchio in 1993 and a sister, Victoria Mortellaro in 2004.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 19, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown with the Rev. Father John Keehner officiating.

Joseph Nevinsky, 88
CAMPBELL Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph the Provider Catholic Church for Joseph Nevinsky, 88, who passed away Sunday morning of complications following surgery at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.
Mr. Nevinsky was born April 11, 1921 in Lisbon, the son of John and Mary Kaszycki Nevinsky.
He was a member of the church, and a 1940 graduate of South High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
He served his country in the U.S. Army as a corporal in the Army Air Force in the 397th Bomb Squadron stationed in the Panama Canal from 1942 to 1945.
He worked for 30 years in the Coal Strip Department of the Youngstown Sheet &Tube Company.
He was a beloved father and uncle, who will be missed by his daughter, family and friends.
His wife, the former Stasia Szymanski, whom he married on Sept. 27, 1947, passed away on Feb. 9, 1995.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Janet Nevinsky at home and two sisters, Jennie Walcott of Boardman and Katherine (Perky) Larkin of Massachusetts.
Besides his wife, Stasia, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Caroline Miller, Francis Hamilton and Peggy Primmer; and two brothers, Mike and Johnny Nevinsky.

Mr. Della Penna was born in Weathersfield, a son of Domonic Della Penna and Edna Green Della Penna Boles.
He was a graduate of Girard High School.
Jim was the owner and operator of Pennas Cleaners in Youngstown for many years. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed golf.
He attended the Boardman Baptist Church.
Jim served as a medic in the Army during World War II.
His wife, the former Wanda Belle Roth, whom he married June 10, 1945, died Dec. 3, 2000.
He leaves two children, J. Ron (Shari) Della Penna of Canfield and Cheryl (Arlen) Mills of Dyersburg, Tenn.; four sisters, Alice Clark, Harriet (Leroy) Boles, Lois (Joe) Parillo and Dolores (Paul) Schwambach, all of Florida; six grandchildren, Kristen (David) Bright, Rachel (Glenn) Miller, Samantha (Joshua) Betts, Emily (Mark) Fairbanks, Joseph Mills and Ruthie Mills; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorabelle Mazella and Jean Woofter; and three brothers, Charles, Ed and Louis Della Penna.

Frances V. Procopio, 79
HOWLAND TOWNSHIP Frances V. Procopio, 79, died at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn., following a courageous two year battle with cancer.
She was born Jan.13, 1930 in West Virginia, the daughter of Ronald and Virginia (Barber) Hale.
An area resident for most of her life, Fran was a 1947 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and was a long time member of St. Marys Church of Warren. She was the owner-operator of the Triangle Inn in Warren, since the death of her husband in 1976.
An avid dart player, she played on a traveling dart team that she sponsored. Fran also loved the Cleveland Indians, Cavs and Browns, but her greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her husband, Vernon J. Procopio, whom she married Jan.31, 1953, preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1976.
She also was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by a son, Samuel R. (Brenda) Procopio of Howland; a daughter, Patricia Ann (Richard) Mirabelli of Minneapolis; and two grandsons, Stephen Andrew Procopio and Frank J. Mirabelli.
The Rev. Charles Crumbley will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at St. James Church in Warren.

Rev. Dr. Ernest F. E. Rheins Sr.
YOUNGSTOWN On June 11, 2009, THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY summoned HIS servant the Rev. Dr. Ernest F. E. Rheins Sr. to come home from earth to eternal glory.
Rev. Rheins was born Dec. 25, 1916 in Monticello, Fla. He was reared by his grandparents, Abraham and Hattie Raines.
He received his preparatory education at the Howard Academy in Monticello. Afterwards, Rev. Rheins graduated from Florida A&M University and attended New Orleans Seminary, Wilberforce College and Oxford University.
Rev. Rheins was called to preach the Gospel at the age of six. He was ordained on July 23, 1923. He afterward was pastor of various churches in Florida. In June 1960, he began his pastorate at the Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Youngstown, where he served for 36 years. From February of 1999 to January of 2001, he served as Interim Pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Steubenville. He was a well-known revivalist, who preached throughout the continental United States and abroad.
Rev. Rheins was a past President and Dean of the Eastern Ohio Baptist District Association Sunday School and BTU Congress. He also served as Secretary of the local Baptist Ministers Conference and participated in the following organizations: Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance; National Sunday School and BTU Congress; National Baptist Convention, Inc.; Ohio State Baptist Convention and the NAACP (life membership).
Rev. Rheins leaves his wife, the former Johnnie Harrison to whom he was married for 51 years. He also leaves a daughter, Flora Mack of Tampa, Fla.; six sons, Earnest (Barbara) Rains Jr. of Madison, Fla.; Wali (Shakura) Kharif of Cookeville, Tenn.; Dennis (Joyce) Rains of Killeen, Texas; George (Jeannette) Rheins of Ashtabula; Mark Rheins Sr. of Canton and Philemon Rheins of Buffalo, N.Y.; two grandchildren, whom he reared, Mark (Marnate) Rheins Jr. and Miranda Rheins of Youngstown; a Spiritually Adopted son, Frankie (Selina) Harrison of Youngstown; five sisters, Lila Mitchell of Monticello, Fla.; Dorothy (Leroy) Cuyler of Monticello; Thelma Holmes of Sanford, Fla.; Daisy Mae Bell of Tallahassee, Fla. and Della (L.W.) Williams of Boston, Ga.; two brothers, Frank Daniels of Monticello and Aaron (Queen) Raines of Tallahassee; and a host of descendants.
Rev. Rheins was preceded in death by his grandparents; two sisters; two brothers; and many kindred and acquaintances.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the New Bethel Baptist Church in Youngstown, with a special musical worship service from 7 to 8 p.m.
Calling hours will also be held Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
A Homemegoing Celebration will take place at the church on Friday at 11 a.m.

NILES Clara O. Sanfrey, 90, of 2567 Niles Vienna Road, died at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Autumn Hills Care Center in Niles.
She was born Nov. 10, 1918 in Niles the daughter of Archie and Rose Scarnecchia Macali Sr.
She was a 1936 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, was employed as a secretary at Antenucci Plumbing and as a cashier at Macali Supermarkets.
She was a member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, enjoyed bowling, and an avid golfer.
Her husband Raymond D. Sanfrey, whom she married Jan. 25, 1941, died Nov. 9, 1989.
She will be deeply missed by a son, Richard Sanfrey and his wife, Laura of Carmel, Ind.; a daughter-in-law, Lena Sanfrey of Cortland; a brother, Archie Macali Jr. and his wife, Joann of Howland; two sisters, Elvira Macali of Howland and Lola DeMatthews of Niles; six grandchildren, Raymond Jr., James, Jeffrey, Richard Jr., Maria and Michael; and six great-grandchildren, Trey, Audrey, Jimmy, Celeste, Elena, and Lilly.
She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond R. Sanfrey Sr.

James C. Shirey, 86
MESQUITE, NEVADA James C. Shirey, 86, formerly of North Maryland Ave. in Youngstown, passed away early Thursday morning, June 11, 2009, in Las Vegas.
James was born July 14, 1922 in Clearfield County, Pa., a son of the late Norman and Statie Hurley Shirey, came to Youngstown in 1965, moved to Wyoming in 1996, and to Nevada in 2005.
He worked in the maintenance department at Clearfield Hospital and later at Woodside Receiving Hospital, retiring after nearly 30 years of employment.
He enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, playing slot machines and watching TV.
Mr. Shirey leaves a son, James G. Shirey, of Green River, Wyoming; two daughters, Sandy Lansberry of Green River and Connie Irwin of Mesquite; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife, Sylvia G. Dixon Shirey, whom he married March 27, 1943, died June 15, 1996.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 North Meridian Road in Youngstown, where family and friends may gather for one hour prior to services.
Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
