Margaret L. “Peggy” Barber, 69

YOUNGSTOWN – Margaret L. “Peggy” Barber, 69, formerly of Flagler Lane in Boardman, passed away early Saturday morning, June 20, 2009, at Omni Manor Assisted Living Center.

Margaret was born Feb. 1, 1940, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Albert and Ethel Pearson Johnson, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Barber was a graduate of South High School, was a homemaker, and worked as a press operator for 37 years at the Mazda Lamp Plant in Austintown, retiring in 2000.

Peggy was a member of St. Christine Church in Youngstown. She enjoyed playing bingo, traveling, and going to casinos. In her younger days, she was active with her husband in the local Democratic Party.

Her husband, Raymond A. Barber, whom she married Feb. 14, 1975, passed away Jan. 21, 2000.

Mrs. Barber leaves four brothers, Brother Richard Johnson of the Holy Cross Brothers in South Bend, Ind., Ronald Johnson of Virginia, Jerry (Jackie) Johnson of Boardman and James (Nancy) Johnson of Austintown; a sister, Lois Lewis of Austintown; three nieces; five nephews; and six great-nephews.

Peggy will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her husband, a sister, Carol Warne; two brothers-in-law, Homer Warne and Thomas Lewis; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson are also deceased

Family and friends may call on Tuesday, June 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church.

Committal services will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Donato “Danny” Buccino, 79

POLAND – Funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Youngstown, with the Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio Celebrating, for Donato “Danny” Buccino who passed away Saturday morning, June 20.

Donato was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Rotello, Campobasso, Italy, the son of Pasquale and Rose Buccino.

He retired from Republic Steel in 1986 and owned and operated The Nimrod Inn for 23 years. He enjoyed his flowers and working in his garden. His greatest joy was his family and the wonderful time spent together. Every Sunday was spent attending the flea market followed by family dinner.

Donato will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Dora Silvestri, whom he married Oct. 6, 1956, his daughter, Roseann (Brad) Habbe, and his son, Dr. Patsy (Irene) Buccino, all of Poland; his two grandchildren, Christina Habbe and Danny Buccino, who brought him joy and who he lived his life for and affectionately called him “Nini;” his sister, Sinetta Rea of Torino, Italy; and grandson Danny’s mom, Charlene Carabbia.

Besides his parents; Donato was preceded in death by his brother, Giuseppe Buccino.

Lois Ondo Curto, 70

HUBBARD – There will be services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Lois Ondo Curto, 70, who passed away Friday afternoon at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House.

Lois was born Aug. 17, 1938, in Kinsman, a daughter of Clarence and Maudie Wright Gardner.

She was a 1956 graduate of Hubbard High School and a lifelong Hubbard resident.

Lois was a customer service representative for J.C. Penney in Niles in the catalog department. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hubbard and a past session member and enjoyed knitting baby blankets for the church.

She enjoyed short holes golfing, bowling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was very active in Campfire, where she was a former leader, and loved her pets.

Her first husband, William Ondo, whom she married Nov. 19, 1960, passed away May 15, 1997; she leaves her second husband, Matteo Curto, whom she married Oct. 23, 2004.

Lois is survived by her children, Mary (Robert) Burton and Michael (Angela) Ondo, both of Girard, and Barbara (Wayne) Meyers and Brian (Jennifer) Ondo, both of Hubbard; and three grandchildren, Timothy Cleary Jr., Christopher William Ondo and Mathew Warren Ondo.

She also leaves her siblings, Clarence “Clem” Gardner of Liberty, Ernest Gardner of Hubbard, Alice Cole of Georgia, Ethel Wick of Austintown and Linda Mattocks of Coitsville.

Besides her parents, she was preceded by her first husband, William Ondo.

There will be calling hours Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Kathleen Anne Dailey, 57

BOARDMAN — There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday at Saint Charles Church for Kathleen Anne Dailey, 57, who passed away Thursday afternoon at University Hospital in Cleveland from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Kathy was born May 24, 1952, in Youngstown, a daughter of Paul and Helen Tyma Glock.

She graduated from Cardinal Mooney High School in 1970. She worked in retail management for a number of years before retiring from Burlington Coat Factory in 1996. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, gardening and planning family functions.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved husband, Thomas J. Dailey, whom she married Aug. 7, 1992; her son, Trey, whom she treasured and adored; her mother, Helen Glock; her mother-in-law, Norma Dailey; two siblings, Joyce Martin (Carl) of Leesburg, Fla., and Paul (Donna) Glock of Dublin; four stepchildren, Kelly (Bob) LaRubbio, Kimberly Dailey-Sauerwein, Kristine Dailey and Thomas J. Dailey II; four grandchildren, Bobby and Alyssa LaRubbio, Christopher Dailey and Thomas George; also many other family members and friends.

Kathy lived her life to the fullest, always putting her family first. She was a loving mother and a trusted friend. She deeply touched the lives of all she came to know. Kathy will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

John Peter “Mr. Dap” D’Apolito

POLAND – John Peter “Mr. Dap” D’Apolito entered into eternal rest Friday, June 19, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center surrounded by his family.

John was the second chid of Lumeno and Filomena (Martoriello) D'Apolito and was born March 9, 1923, in Youngstown.

He is survived by his brothers, Tony (Helene) D’Apolito, Andrew (Milena) D’Apolito and Frank (Katherine) D’Apolito.

Together with his wife of 41 years, Ann (Crisci), whom he was reunited with in the Lord, John had five beloved children who will miss him, John (Jeanie) D’Apolito, Tony (Patty) D’Apolito, Ron (Brenda) D’Apolito, Mary Ann (Dan) Turner and Andrew D’Apolito. He was also blessed to gain five stepchildren, Michael, David, Gary, Thomas and Mary Ann, with his current wife, Blanche (Borton).

In his early career, John owned and operated a shoemaker shop in Lansingville, Ohio. He was known to his friends and customers as “Scup.” After working for General Fireproofing, he gave 30 years of service to the Youngstown Board of Education (Chaney). Following his retirement, he worked in maintenance at Turner Steel Service Center from 1990 to 1999.

A man deep in his faith, John was a longtime member of St. Dominic’s Parish in Youngstown. He was a former player for the General Fireproofing softball team and took great pride in the years he spent coaching the Youngstown Police Department softball team. John was also an honorary member of the Italian American War Veterans Boardman-Canfield Post No. 2.

Additionally, he was an active member of the Opera Guild, the St. Charles Over 55 Group, and the United Steelworkers Senior Citizens Group No. 2162. On Thursdays, John could be found playing poker with his dear friends. In 2006, he was bestowed the honor of Grandfather of the Year at Miami University.

Of all his many loves, John most enjoyed sitting by the pool, sipping a beverage and enjoying the company of his family, which included 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. John was a man so loved and respected by all who knew him for his joyous heart, warm smile and compassionate soul.

Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 E. Indianola Ave.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church.

Catherine “Kitty” Di Carlo

HUBBARD – Catherine “Kitty” Di Carlo, of Stewart Avenue, passed away at Liberty Health Care Center at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 17.

She was born Oct. 18, 1914, in Struthers, the daughter of the late Philip Mestrovich and Mary Palokovich.

She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Thomas A. Di Carlo, whom she married Aug. 11, 1934; daughter Emma “Dolly” (Tom) Green of Hubbard, son Julius “Sonny” (Marilyn) Di Carlo of Austintown and daughter Cathy (John) Hames of South Carolina, where Mr. Di Carlo will reside; and a sister, Ann Novacich of Omni Manor in Youngstown; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine, who died in infancy; and three brothers, Michael, Phillip and Nick Mestrovich.

Catherine was a homemaker, loved bowling and family get togethers. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Hubbard.

There will be no calling hours or services.


Margaret Grace Fata

YOUNGSTOWN – A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning at St. Luke Roman Catholic Church in Boardman for Margaret Grace Fata, who had been suffering with a form of ALS for the past two years.

Margaret was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Youngstown, a daughter of Albert LaCivita and Marietta LaCivita (Carosella).

She graduated from East High School in 1939 and lived in Youngstown her entire life. Early in her life, she was a seamstress, but then focused her energy on her family for the rest of her life.

Her husband, Oreste Fata, passed away in 1977.

She leaves four children, Michelina Biasella, Oreste J. Fata, Margaret M. (David) Nigro, and Gregory (Terri) Fata; eight grandchildren, Lynne Biasella, Beth (Michael) Dowell and Matthew Biasella (children of Michelina), Michael Nigro and Kaitlyn Nigro (children of Margaret) and Nicolette, Kristianna and Alexandria Fata (daughters of Gregory) and one great-grandchild, Anthony Dowell, son of Beth (Michael) Dowell. She is also survived by two sisters, Ann Marie DiPasqua and Patricia Carlomagno.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Anthony A. Fata, who passed away May 8, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Rose Petrich, and four brothers, Angelo LaCivita, Ralph LaCivita, Lawrence LaCivita and Louis LaCivita

Rose M. McCreay Ferraro, 93

YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Paul the Apostle Church in New Middletown for Rose M. McCreay Ferraro, 93, who passed away Thursday morning at Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Mrs. Ferraro was born July 4, 1915 in Hubbard, a daughter of Andrew and Josephine Vito Camuse and was a lifelong area resident.

She worked at Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 27 years.

Rose was a member of the church and a life member of the Telephone Pioneers. She was an active bingo player and a former member AARP and former volunteer with Hospice.

Her first husband, Charles F. McCreay and her second husband, James R. Ferraro are deceased.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Ellen (Tom) Flaherty of New Middletown; a son, John T. (Pat) McCreay of Westerville; a stepdaughter, Margaret “Peggy” (Bob) Moherman of Austintown; two stepsons, Anthony J. Ferraro of Cleveland and Frank R. Ferraro of Youngstown; a sister, Carmel Borman of Hubbard; 15 grandchildren; 26  great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a stepson, Charles F. McCreay Jr.; two brothers, John Camuse and James Camuse; and two sisters, Mary Pedaline and Frances Emerick.

Jean Fauver Gagliano, 91

YOUNGSTOWN – Jean Fauver Gagliano passed away Monday afternoon, June 15.

She was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Youngstown, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Zokie) Yannarelli.

Jean was a homemaker.

She will always be remembered by her sons, Robert E. and wife Susan Fauver of Utah, Larry and wife Marcella Fauver of Poland, and David S. Fauver of Poland; two daughters, Karen and husband Joseph Zappia of Lowellville and Gail M. and husband Jeffrey Hunt of Youngstown; 14 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Benjamin Fauver; her second husband, Dominic Gagliano; a brother, James Yarnell; and two sisters, Lucille Kohler and Rose Martin.

Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.

Thomas J. Hankey, 59

AUSTINTOWN – There were private funeral services Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St., Boardman, for Thomas J. Hankey, 59, who passed away Friday, June 12, 2009.

Thomas will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born July 31, 1949, in Youngstown, the son of William and Frances (Hockenberry) Hankey, and was a lifelong area resident.

Thomas was employed with Modern Builders, now known as Polaris Technology, as a screener for 13 years.

He was a graduate of The Rayen School and enjoyed gardening and flowers along with being an avid sports fan. Thomas truly enjoyed spending time with his family, but above all he loved and cherished his grandchildren.

He was a U.S. Army veteran where he earned the rank of SP-5 and received the National Defense Service Medal.

Thomas leaves behind to hold on to his memories his wife, the former Teresa Cascarelli, whom he married July 26, 1969; a daughter, Tabitha Notar of Boardman; a son, Thomas (Geniene) Hankey of Youngstown; four grandchildren, Michael T., Delaney T., Anson R., and Aidan T.; two brothers, William Hankey and Robert (Barbara) Hankey, both of Austintown; and three sisters, Geneva Peck, Barbara Cox, and Kathy (James) Turnbull, all of Austintown.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Swingle.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Margaret Ivadell “Peg” Henninger

MINERAL RIDGE - Margaret Ivadell “Peg” Henninger was born in Niles on May 10, 1922 to Floyd J. and Eva E. (Utt) Lancaster and died Thursday morning, June 18, 2009.

She attended school in both Niles and Mineral Ridge, where she was known as Ivadell. She settled in Niles after her marriage to Bert R. Henninger Jr. on Oct. 11, 1941. She resided in Niles and Weathersfield Township most of her life. She was a resident in Meadowbrook Manor in Fowler at the time of her death.

Margaret was active in Niles City Schools PTA while her children were in school. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Ida McKinley Chapter of Eastern Star. She was a Past President of Women’s Association at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles, where she also taught church school and attended the JOY class. She was ordained a deacon on Feb. 17, 1980. In later years, she became a member of the Presbyterian Church in Mineral Ridge, where she had been baptized and married.

She retired in 1982, after 18 years at the Niles City Schools, where she was head cook at McKinley High School for the last three years of employment.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Laddie J. (Patti Jayne) Henninger of West Chester, Patricia J. (John Jr.) O’Malia of Mineral Ridge, with whom she made her home prior to moving to Meadowbrook Manor, Richard A. (Judi) Henninger of Austintown and Jeanine K. (Ransell, Jr.) Miller of Farmdale. She treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren, Bret J. (Kris) Henninger and daughter, Lauren; Melinda J. Henninger; Christian A. Henninger; John J. (Kristina) O’Malia III and son, Eric; Joan (Shawn) Phillips and children, Ella and Xavier; Jane (Tom) Staszak; Yvonne (Scott) Rentz and sons, Justin and Anthony; Jason (Lori) Henninger; David M. Lee and children, Christopher and Ariell; Brian M. (Rigel) and children, Alexander and Breann; her stepgrandchildren Ransell (Pamela) Miller and their children, Holly, Heather, Jessica and Randy (Amber) Louis and daughters, Hannah and Moriah and Kayleigh Louis; Angela Fogle and her children, Nathan and Elissia; and Shannon (David) Knowles and daughter, Samantha Sponsler. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Bert R. Henninger Jr., whom she married Oct. 11, 1941, and he died Dec. 23, 1989; her brothers, Albert Lancaster, Alfred “Ted” Lancaster, Donald Lancaster and Karl Lancaster; and her sister, Fayma Jones.

In lieu of flowers, Peg requested that material tributes be sent to the deacon’s fund at the Mineral Ridge Presbyterian Church.

The family is very grateful to the staff of Meadowbrook Manor and Southern Care Hospice for the care given to Peg and the emotional support given to the family during her illness.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009, at the Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel with the services on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge with calling hours from 10 to 11 a.m.

Holbrook, 72

WARREN – Miss Lillian Louise Holbrook, 72, died at her residence Friday, June 19, 2009.

She was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Warren, the daughter of Arthur W. and Kathryn A. (Crozer) Holbrook.

A lifetime area resident, she was a 1953 graduate of Newton Falls High School and was employed by Packard Electric for 50 years as an assembly worker and press operator before retiring in 2007.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert E. Holbrook; and a sister, Della Pauline Hochever.

Survivors include three sisters, Charlotte (James) Reifinger of Newton Falls, Barbara Williams of Champion Township, and Linda Taylor of Warren; a brother, Arthur W. Holbrook of Youngstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Roberts-Clark Chapel, where friends will be received for 1 hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Pineview Memorial Park.

Betty “Lena” Serrecchio Howell, 85

YOUNGSTOWN – A memorial service will be held at a later date for Betty “Lena” Serrecchio Howell, 85, who died Friday evening in Omni Manor.

Lena was born April 29, 1924, in Youngstown, a daughter of Giuseppe and Mary DiPinto Serrecchio.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and caring for her cats.

She is survived by her children, Mary Lou Jarrett, Raymond W. Ferguson, Betty L. Simpson and Rodney J. Ferguson; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers Patsy Serrecchio and Joseph Serrecchio; and a sister, Rose Santarelli.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Connie Serrecchio, Louise Duganne, Louis Serrecchio, Michael Serrecchio and Phyllis Serrecchio; and her three husbands, Robert Ferguson, George Howell and Richard Howell.

Arrangements were handled by Schiavone Funeral Home.


Thomas “Ty” M. Nally, 100

MASSILLON – Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Christine Church in Youngstown, for Thomas “Ty” M. Nally, 100, formerly of Youngstown, who passed away peacefully Friday evening. .

Ty was born March 12, 1909, in Youngstown, a son of Michael J. and Julia A. Vahey Nally, who were Irish immigrants.

He attended St. Patrick’s School and South High School, both in Youngstown. He first worked as a soda jerk at the original Isaly’s, and then he worked at Republic Steel, retiring as a foreman in 1970.

He was a member of the church, the Mill Creek Senior Golf League, and the Rolling Hills Golf League, where the members called themselves “the PTA.” Ty was also a member of the Glen Crest Lodge Men's Club, and he had two holes in one after the age of 70, and he loved to take rides and walk in Millcreek Park.

His wife, the former Gertrude L. Kennedy, whom he married Nov. 28, 1933, died June 30, 1991.

He Leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Katherine Ann (James) Gorman of Canfield; two sons, Thomas M. (Kathleen) Nally of Massillon and Daniel J. (Mary) Nally of Warrenton, Va.; a brother, Joseph V (Marge) Nally of Austintown; two sisters, Rita Casey of Minnesota and Patricia Brown of Boardman; 12 grandchildren, James (Maureen) Gorman, Katherine (Lee) Stoneburner, Thomas (Cora) Nally, Joan Nally, Patrick (Meredith) Gorman, Mary Pat Nally, John Nally, Brian Nally, Shannon Nally, Dr. Reagan Nally, Kevin Nally and Daniel Nally; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Ty was preceded in death by brothers John and Edward; sisters Julia, Mary and Kathleen; and a granddaughter, Mary Kathleen Nally.

Mary Sue Phillips, 82

LOWELLVILLE – Mary Sue Phillips, 82, died Thursday evening of a stroke in St. Elizabeth Heath Center’s emergency room.

Mrs. Phillips was born April 12, 1927, in Struthers, a daughter of Fred and Altha Geiger Meehan. As a child her family moved to Lowellville, where she lived her entire life.

She was a 1945 Lowellville High School graduate and went to work directly out of high school as Deputy Auditor for Mahoning County Auditors Office. She retired in 1987 after 40 years of service.

Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker, an active member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Boardman, a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 247 of Lowellville, and was a Democratic Committee woman for Mahoning County, Poland Precinct.

Besides her husband, William Phillips, whom she married Feb. 20, 1965, she leaves two sisters, Margaret (Sam) LaBarba of Canton and Joann (Edward) Schultz of Sarasota, Fla.; one brother, Gerard (Ila) Meehan of Sarasota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick and Patrick Meehan.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Haenftling officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville.

Friends will be received Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville and Tuesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.

Rev. David Phoenix, 55

TWINSBURG – Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Mariah Church in Berlin Center for the Rev. David Phoenix, 55, who went home to the Lord on Thursday, June 18, 2009.

Rev. Phoenix was born April 27, 1954, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of Raymond and Mavis (Richens) Phoenix. He moved to Lyndhurst from New Jersey in 1982 and to Twinsburg in 1998.

Rev. Phoenix was ordained in 1997 and was currently the pastor of the Mt. Mariah Lutheran Church in Berlin Center since 1998. He also was the Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministry at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Lyndhurst, and had also been the Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministry at the Grace Lutheran in Phillipsburg, N.J. prior to coming to Ohio.

Rev. Phoenix graduated from State University of New York college in Brockport, N.Y. He earned his MAR degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pa., and his Master of Divinity at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus.

Besides his parents of Schenectady, Rev. Phoenix leaves his wife, the former Lynann Chester, whom he married Aug. 8, 1977; two daughters, Sara Phoenix of Twinsburg and Leah Phoenix of New York, N.Y. He also leaves two brothers, Wayne Phoenix of Syracuse, N.Y. and Mark Phoenix of Schenectady; and one sister, Janice Phoenix of Schenectady.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and again from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Mt. Mariah Lutheran Church general fund in Rev. Phoenix’s name.

Shirley A. Shively, 82

HOWLAND TOWNSHIP – A celebration of the life of Shirley A. Shively, 82, will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the Warren Central Christian Church.

Surrounded by her loving family, Shirley was called home at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

She was born in Howland Township Dec. 6, 1926, the daughter of Laurel and Twila (Barringer) Pelton.

A lifetime area resident, Shirley was a 1944 graduate of Howland High School and she received a degree in Pharmacy from Case Western Reserve University in 1948.

She was employed in the pharmacy at St. Joseph’s Hospital, by various area drug stores, and for 18 years at Hillside Hospital, retiring in 1985.

She was a devoted member of Central Christian Church in Warren where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, was an usher, and former head of the Diaconate. Shirley was also a member of the Terra Ceia Methodist Church of Palmetto, Fla., the Rho Chi National Pharmacist Honorary Society, and she served as a volunteer for the Southeast Guide Dogs Inc. of Palmetto.

Shirley and her husband were very involved in the Airstream Club and traveled and camped extensively with family and friends. She also enjoyed reading and music and formerly played violin with the Youngstown Symphony and the Cleveland Symphony.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 60 years, Harold F. Shively, whom she married July 10, 1948; four sons, James F. (Cynthia) of Cortland, David L. (Patricia) of Lordstown, Russell S. (Jacqueline) of Mendocino, Calif. and Kenneth R. (Lory) of Lake Milton. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Julie Thompson, Carrie Goble, Erin Gabrovsek, Weston, Mitchell, Jessica and David Shively; six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ryan, Christian, Sean Thompson, Lane Goble and Luke Gabrovsek; a brother, Robert (Ann) Pelton of Tucson; sister-in-law, Judy Pelton of Hudsonville, Mich.; brother-in-law, Donald (Miriam) Shively of Oklahoma City; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kenneth Pelton.

Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren and at the church, one hour prior to the memorial service Tuesday. Pastor Cynthia Klingemier will officiate.

Cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred in the Lordstown Village Cemetery.

Olga Anna Smith, 83

AUSTINTOWN - Olga Anna Smith, 83, of Austinwoods Nursing Home, died Wednesday morning, June 10, 2009.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 12, 1925, in Youngstown, a daughter of Wasil and Anna Luczka.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Liberty Assembly of God.

Her husband, Earl Smith Sr., whom she married Aug. 29, 1942, died Dec. 15, 1999.

She leaves one son, Earl (Mary) Smith of Austintown; three grandchildren, Michelle Smith of Austintown, Denise (Michael) Betters of Austintown and Duane (Nora) Smith of Boardman; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Betters, Zackary Smith, Dylan Betters and Georgia Smith; and one sister, Mary Tackas of Orlando, Fla.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter and four brothers, Nick, Andrew, Charles and Teddy Luczka.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 27, 2009, at noon at the Liberty Assembly of God, 6779 Belmont Ave., Girard, OH 44420.

Arrangements are being handled by the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.

Cecilia H. Szewczyk, 77

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home in Youngstown for Cecilia H. Szewczyk, 77, of Park Vista Retirement Community who passed away Thursday afternoon at Mahoning Valley Hospital Trumbull Campus.

Cecilia was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of Stefan and Mary Rompala Szewczyk.

She was in the U.S. Army for several years and a member of St. James Catholic Church in New Bedford, Pa. She formerly lived at the Villa Maria Apartments and was a secular franciscan.

She is survived by two brothers, Edward and Joe Szewczyk of Pittsburgh; a sister, Marijo Seibel of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Cecilia was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Stanley.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Committal services will be at St. James Cemetery in New Bedford at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday.
