Thayne Larry Colonel Ainsley, 76
CORTLAND Thayne Larry Colonel Ainsley, 76, passed away at 7:40 a.m. June 18, 2009, at his home.
Larry was born on May 4, 1933 in Warren, the son of the late Thayne E. and Ailleen Marie (Harmon) Ainsley.
A lifetime area resident, Larry owned and operated Ainsley Oil Co. for 41 years, before retiring in 1996, after having worked there for 50 years.
He was a member of the Cortland Christian Church, past member of City Council, served as the grand marshall of the Cortland Street Fair.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Larry was very proud about being married to his wife, Donna, for 49 years. Larry enjoyed traveling, camping in Michigan, hunting, snowmobiling, mowing the lawn, watching hockey, and also many years of coaching his sons.
Larry is survived by his wife, the former Donna M. Carr, whom he married June 18, 1960. Together they shared 49 years of marriage and their three children, Mike (Alice) Ainsley and Keith (Kara) Ainsley, both of Cortland and Jill Ainsley of McKinney, Texas; and grandchildren Thayne, Ethan, Desirae, Colton, Madison, Kaydin and Sedona.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the Cortland Christian Church, with the Rev. Don Barnes officiating.

Irene F. Bodnar, 81
LAS VEGAS Irene F. Bodnar, 81, passed away June 15, 2009.
Irene was born June 24, 1927 in Youngstown to Barbara Omasta and Joseph Telka.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. She lived in Youngstown, where she was married to Stephen R. Bodnar, who preceded her in death.
She worked at both Livingston's and Strouss' as the Director of Human Resources. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
In 2003, she moved to Las Vegas, where she was a member of St. Joseph, Husband-Mary Roman Catholic Church.
She leaves behind, two children, Karen Burns of Las Vegas and La Porte, Ind. and Gary S. Bodnar of Las Vegas. She also has two grandsons, Chip Burns of Brownsburg, Ind. and Buzz Burns of Chicago.
Memorial services will be held on July 6, 2009 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

NORFOLK, VA. Rev. Charles M. Boyce, 79, formerly of Brookfield, died on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.
Mr. Boyce was born July 26, 1929 Parkersburg, a son of Marsellus and Vivian (Meredith) Boyce.
He married the former Phyllis Sprouse on Nov. 27, 2004 and has since resided in Norfolk.
Rev. Boyce had served his country in the U.S. Air Force and had went on to work for the Ohio Chair Company in Austintown for several years. Later in life, he pastored and ministered at several area churches until his moving to Virginia, where he continued to serve in various ministries at the True Vine Baptist Church.
Charles is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Norfolk; his son, Michael Boyce and his wife, Diane of Hubbard; his daughter, Charlene Henry and her husband, Randy of Girard; his brother, Edwin Boyce of Hubbard; four sisters, Mary Lou Pursley of Sandyville, W.Va., Gwendolyn Martin and her husband, Lou, Patricia Carney and her husband, Tom and Linda Murray and her husband, Larry, all of Elizabeth, W.Va; four grandchildren, Tammy Duty, Dale Boyce, Jon Boyce and Holly Henry; six great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Chilcie L. Pursley, whom he married Dec. 28, 1950, and who died Nov. 11, 2002; two brothers, Marsellus Boyce Jr. and Lewis Boyce; and two sisters, Eileen Boyce and Donna Murray.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday evening at Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Dugan Cemetery in Fowler.

William F. Byer Jr., 65
LAKE MILTON William F. Byer Jr., 65, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 1:25 p.m.
William was born in Warren on May 31, 1944, the son of William F. and Martha (Stempak) Byer Sr.
He was a lifetime area resident and a 1962 graduate of Jackson Milton High School. Bill was employed by Denman Tire for 30 years, retiring from his duties in 2005.
In his spare time, William enjoyed hunting, fishing and restoring automobiles. He was a social member of American Legion Post 737 in Lake Milton.
Memories of William will be carried on by his sons, Joe (Wendy Shoman) Byer of Youngstown and Jeff Byer of Lake Milton; daughter, Jami (Tim) Warner of Louisville; sister, Gloria (Ken) Andrulis of Lake Milton; and granddaughters, Emily and Natalie Warner of Louisville.
Preceding him in death are his parents.

NORTH LIMA Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Youngstown for Cecilia D. Chonko, 85, who passed away early Monday morning.
She was born Oct. 23, 1923 in Ravenna, a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Gasper) Sedlock.
Cecilia was formerly of Milton Avenue. She was a graduate of Ravenna High School.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Youngstown.
She is survived by a brother, Albert Sedlock of Ravenna and a sister, Dorothy Tortorella of Ravenna. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Chonko, whom she married Sept. 29, 1951, and who passed away Oct. 30,1994; two brothers; and six sisters.

Ruth R. Arthelia (Ashton) Delaney, 75
SOUTH LEBANON Ruth R. Arthelia (Ashton) Delaney, 75, died peacefully Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born Dec. 16, 1933 to Lorraine and Ruth (Harder) Ashton, Ruth moved to South Lebanon from Denver in April of 2007.
Ruth was born in Baltimore and at the age of two she moved to Hubbard, where she was raised by her mother and aunt, Gladys P. Harder.
She attended Youngstown University business school and worked at an accounting office. Her volunteering began in 1970 while she lived in Findlay, and she gave her time at the local YMCA.
After living in Findlay, Ruth moved to Singapore, where she worked for the United States Treasury Department. She moved from Singapore to Denver and lived there for 19 years, where she loved the mountains.
After returning to Ohio, Ms. Delaney was an active volunteer in Lebanon at the Lebanon Food Pantry, the Warren County Senior Center, the Lebanon Junior High and the Lebanon City Building.
She is survived by her son, Terry Delaney of Parker, Colo.; two daughters, Darlene Delaney of Houston and Jennifer Delaney-Berta of Lebanon; and two grandchildren, Trey Nunley and Spencer Berta.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Gunapala Edirisooriya Ph.D., 66
CANFIELD Gunapala Edirisooriya Ph. D., 66, passed away Sunday evening at his home.
He was born March 22, 1943 in Tangalle, Sri Lanka, a son of the late Sadiris appu Patabandige and Abanchihami (Weerawarna) Edirisooriya, coming to the United States in 1984.
A lifelong educator, Gunapala was most recently the Chair of the Department of Educational Foundations, Research, Technology and Leadership at Youngstown State University. He was a well respected scholar in the department and college as well as nationally and internationally. He had been with the department since 2002.
Before he joined Youngstown State University, he was the Associate Dean in the College of Education at Eastern Tennessee State University. He also taught at the University of Delaware, the University of Nigeria, and the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He served as the founding Chair of the Department of Business and Economics at the University of Ruhuna in Sri Lanka.
He was a member of the Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi, and the Chairman of the Special Interest Group, AERA.
Dr. Edirisooriya was very much interested in helping disadvantaged students obtain higher education in Sri Lanka through the Gunapala Edirisooriya Foundation.
Dr. Edirisooriya is survived by his wife, Ariyamala, whom he married May 29, 1975; one son, Milinda Edirisooriya; one daughter, Sithari Edirisooriya; and one brother, Karunasena Edirisooriya.

Violet Bales Goodwin, 91
YOUNGSTOWN Violet Bales Goodwin, 91, passed away Saturday evening, June 20, at Hospice of the Valley in Poland of respiratory failure after a brief illness.
She was born May 8, 1918 in Greenville, Pa., the daughter of the late LaPierre and Hazel (Bell) Bales.
She married George Evans Goodwin in 1943 and was married for 54 years until his death in 1997.
She graduated from Penn High School in Greenville in 1936 and Shenago Valley Commercial Institute in 1939.
She was employed by New York Life Insurance Company from 1939 to 1952 and the Youngstown Public Schools Board of Education from 1969 to her retirement in 1985.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and her brothers, Howard and Gordon Bales.
She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Marylinne and husband James Witte; and two grandchildren, Evan and Jennifer Witte, all of Cincinnati.
A private family burial is planned for Saturday, June 27, in Greenville.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 4, at 10 a.m. at the Central Christian Church in Hubbard.

COLUMBUS Lois D. Gorby, 89, passed away peacefully June 20, 2009 at Sunrise of Bexley.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cecil G. Gorby; son, John C. Gorby; brothers, Joe Donlon and George Donlon; and sister, Patricia Hoon.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Jo Neal; grandchildren, Eileen (Jason) Bundy, Brittany (Tim) Gilla and their children, Sam and Addison, Chad (Heather) Gorby and their children, Riggs and Skya; and daughter-in-law, Darla Temple.

David Lawrence Heimann, 71
NAPLES, FLA. David Lawrence Heimann, 71, passed away on June 22, 2009 in the comfort of his home after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer.
He was born March 17, 1938 in Montreal, Canada.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at the Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road in Naples. Burial will follow at Palm Royale Cemetery.
After his marriage to Barbara Stein of Sharon, Pa. in 1958, David moved to the United States.
Most of his adult life and career was spent in Youngstown, where he held a series of positions primarily in the aluminum industry. From 1968 to 1975, he was Plant Manager of Easco Aluminum in Niles, In 1975 to 1976, he was a primary aluminum trader with Tower Metal and Trading Co. in Chicago. From 1976 to 1978, he was President of Taber Metals in Russellville, Ark. In 1979, David founded Dart Metals Inc. in Youngstown, he remained there until his retirement in 1997.
The Heimanns began spending winters in Naples in 1994 and became permanent residents in 1999.
David served on the boards of many institutions including, The Youngstown Symphony Society, Rodef Sholom Temple, and Squaw Creek Country Club, all in Youngstown. In Naples, he served on the board of Temple Shalom, was a past member of Club Pelican Bay, and co-chaired American Friends of Magen David Adom.
David is survived by his devoted wife and soul mate of 51 years, Barbara; loving children, daughter Gloria Singer (Richard) of Boca Raton, Fla., son Bruce Heimann (Kathy) of Boulder, Colo. and daughter Stephanie Mallen of Boulder; adored nine grandchildren, Noah Singer, Jana Singer, Jake Singer, Marni Singer, Julie Mallen, Lisa Mallen, Kevin Mallen, Alexandra Heimann and Cody Heimann; and a sister, Brenda Blatt (Harvey) of Montreal. He also leaves brothers-in-law, Martin Stein and Leon Stein (Shirley) of Sharon.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Sara and Louis Heimann; his in-laws, Esther and Louis Stein; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Stein.
David was respected and loved by his many friends, his nieces and nephews, and large extended family.

YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Rosa de Lima Church for Eugenia Hernandez, 81, who passed away Saturday evening at her residence, with her family by her side.
Eugenia was born Nov. 16, 1927 in Barrio Quebrada, Camuy Puerto Rico, the daughter of Confesor and Evangelista Vazquez Santiago.
She was a member of the church and belonged to the Legion of Mary.
Eugenia was the loving wife of Martin Hernandez, they grew up together as children and were married for 65 years.
She was a loving and devoted mother and will be sadly missed by her children, Juana (Jose) Escoriaza, Juan Antonio (Elia) Hernandez, Juan Fermin (Olga) Hernandez, Miguel Angel (Marianne) Hernandez, Rosaura Olivera, Lillian (Ramon) Santiago and Samuel (Margarita) Hernandez. She has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Quintin Santiago and a sister, Antonia Santiago.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three children, Ismael, Mariano and Victor Manuel Hernandez; two sisters, Ramona Rodriguez and Rafaela Leon; and one brother, Francisco Santiago.
The Hernandez family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, where a prayer and music service will be conducted at 6 p.m.
Charles Bill Maughan, 82
GIRARD Charles Bill Maughan, 82, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at Renaissance North in Warren.
He was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Monessen, Pa., the son of the late Joseph W. and Sarah E. (Johns) Maughan.
Bill was a 1945 graduate of Girard High School. He retired in 1992 from both Girard City Schools and Forum Health Northside Medical Center, where he was a storeroom manager.
He was a member of St. Rose Church, Knights of Columbus and Girard Senior Citizens. He was an Eagle Scout and was active in scouting at St. Rose.
He married Patricia (Stegna) Maughan May 3, 1952 and she passed away Feb. 23, 2003.
He is survived by a son, Daniel J. (Tracey) Maughan of Boardman; six daughters, Jean M. (Richard) DiMarino of Austintown, Kathryn A. Maughan of Girard, Mary Patricia (Kenneth) Defino of Canfield, Nancy L. (Joe) Connell of Niles, Margaret B. (Gregory) McDaniel of Erie, Pa. and Julianne J. (Chad) Prologo of Calcutta; a brother, Joseph L. Maughan Sr. of Girard; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Maughan; a sister, Glen Dora McAllister; and two infant sons.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church with prayers at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
John S. McDonnell, 67
SAN JOSE, CALIF. John S. McDonnell, 67, formerly of Girard, died unexpectedly on June 11, 2009 at his home.
He was born June 20, 1941 in New Castle, Pa., the son of the late Kathryn S. and John H. McDonnell.
John graduated from Girard High School in 1959, entered the Navy and was a medic corpsman.
John had worked at Lockhead Corp. for 25 years, retiring in 1993. He had currently worked at the Homestead Lounge.
John leaves his former wife, Nancy of Santa Cruz, Calif.; one son, Dr. Mark (Elyse) McDonnell of Woodland Hills, Calif.; two daughters, Stacy Murphy and Kerry Adair of Manteca, Calif.; three grandchildren, Annabelle, Taralynn and Asher. He also leaves two brothers, Ed (Diane) McDonnell and Tom McDonnell, both of Girard; one sister, Patricia Buonavolonta of Niles; several nieces and nephews; and a companion, Connie Winecoop of Santa Clara, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathy Durkin.
Services were held June 17, 2009 at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, Calif.
John knew no strangers. He was loving, generous and kindhearted. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends He also enjoyed playing pool. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. Thanks for all the wonderful memories.
Tilly Miller, 80
WEATHERSFIELD Tilly Miller, 80, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Campus Health Care in Liberty.
She was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Austria.
Tilly worked for Forum Health Northside Medical Center for over 29 years, retiring as a hospital tech.
She is survived by her husband, William S. Miller; a brother, Walter Striker of Austria; and a nephew, Rudy Striker of Austria.
Burial was at Belmont Park Cemetery in Youngstown.

Michael Anthony Mickey Stoddard, 20
WEST MIDDLESEX, PA. Michael Anthony Mickey Stoddard, 20, of 395 Oak Hill Road, passed away at his residence at 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2009.
Mr. Stoddard was born in Youngstown on March 27, 1989, a son of Michael and Paula C. Fuentes Stoddard.
He was a 2007 graduate of New Wilmington High School. Mickey went on to graduate in May of this year from New Castle School of Trades with his CDL and Heavy Equipment Certification.
Michael enjoyed playing football, riding his motorcycle and hunting, but most of all he was a wonderful son, brother, grandson and uncle, who loved his family very much.
Survivors include his father, Michael and his fiancee, Vanetta Otterbacher of West Middlesex; a sister, Christina and her husband, David McKenzie of New Castle, Pa.; a brother, Matthew and his wife, Tiffany Cwiakala of New Castle; his paternal grandparents, Charles and his wife, Marlene Stoddard of Pulaski, Pa.; his maternal grandparents, Anthony and his wife, Anita Fuentes of Girard; two nieces, Camryn and Chloe McKenzie; and two nephews, Matthew Jr. and Gage Cwiakala. He is also survived my numerous aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Paula C. Stoddard.

Joseph A. Taraszewski, 77
BOARDMAN Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman to celebrate the life and memory of Joseph Taraszewski, 77, who passed away Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Joseph was born Feb. 8, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of Alexander and Lottie Taraszewski.
He graduated from South High School, where he excelled in athletics, especially basketball. He attended the Rayen School of Engineering at Youngstown University, while beginning his career at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, where he worked until 1969. Joseph then was employed at Copperweld Steel in Champion, until his retirement in 1997.
He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and at St. Dominic Elementary School, he was active in the parish Booster Club, which assisted sports programs at the school. Along with his wife, the former Carol Steinker, he was a longtime parishioner at St. Dominic.
Joseph and Carol were married in Erie, Pa. on Nov. 24, 1956.
Besides his wife, Joseph is survived by four children, David Taraszewski, Stephen Taraszewski, Deborah (Christopher) Wiles and Kevin (Cheryl) Taraszewski; his grandchildren, Laura, Rachel, Jennifer and Joseph; his sisters, Jane Kuzenko and Sophie Costello; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his brothers, Terry (Walter), Ziggy (John), Hank (Eugene) and Check (Chester).

Mrs. Wittow was born Dec. 9, 1933 in Youngstown, a daughter of Herman and Anna Scherr Fish.
Shirley was a graduate of Wilson High School in 1951 and Youngstown College with a degree in medical technology, working at Northside Hospital as a laboratory technician.
She was a member of the Temple El Emeth, Ohev Tzedek Congregation and both of their sisterhoods, Hadassah, NAMAT and Jewish Women International.
Besides traveling to four continents, she enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends.
Mrs. Wittow is survived by her husband, Fred, whom she married in October of 1954; a son, Mark (Gail Gatton) Wittow of Seattle; two daughters, Sherry (Gregory) Madding of Hillsborough, Calif. and Susan (Jeffrey) Kodish of Boulder, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Anna and Jada Wittow, Jessica, Rachel, Michael and David Madding and Lucy and Molly Kodish; a sister, Florine (Bob) Rusnak of Boardman; and a brother, Sanford Fish of Albuquerque, N.M.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Heritage Manor, CDC Dialysis Center of Howland and Southern Care Hospice for their compassion and care.
Contributions may be made in Shirleys memory to Heritage Manor, Temple El Emeth or Ohev Tzedek Congregation.

YOUNGSTOWN Robert A. Zedek Sr., of South Schenley Avenue, passed away at St. Elizabeth Health Center on Friday, June 19, 2009.
He was born Oct. 18, 1936 in Star Junction, Pa., the son of the late Frank Zedek and Irene Pato.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy K. (Keller) Zedek, whom he married July 28, 1956; two sons, Robert Zedek Jr. of Youngstown and Anthony (Dodie) Zedek of Buckeye, Ariz.; and one daughter, Jacqueline (Greg) Pinter of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Christopher Pinter of Youngstown, Amber Cairo of Virginia, Erica Pinter of Akron and Bobbie Jo Miller of Buckeye; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Maryann Barnett of Canfield, who died in 2005; two brothers, Stanley Zedek of Austintown and Ronald Zedek of Hubbard ; and one sister, Patricia Macejko of Hillsboro Beach, Fla.
Bob loved playing games on the computer. He was a member of St. Josephs Church in Austintown.
Cremation has taken place.
