Darlene Carter

GLENDALE, CALIF. – Darlene Carter was born June 13, 1946, and passed away June 18, 2009 at Cedars Sinai Medical Center of congestive heart failure.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Carter; daughters, Sherry White and Corrie Osuna; son, Coy Gary; son-in-law, Gustavo Osuna; brother, Rev. Alfred Coward; and sister, Brenda Townsend.

Joseph Davila, 55

STRUTHERS – There will be funeral services at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday June 27, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman, with Pastor Cecilio Cuevas celebrating for Joseph Davila, 55, who passed away Wednesday June 24, at Hospice House.

Joseph was born Feb. 11, 1954, the son of Julio Davila and Justina Vasquez.

He was employed as a plumber at Komar Plumbing for 30 years, retiring in April 2008.

Joseph attended St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. He was an avid fisherman and belonged to various pool leagues. Joseph will be remembered by his mother, Justina of Youngstown; three children, Joseph Davila Jr. of Austintown, Desiree Cox of Fayetteville, N.C. and William David Forest Beaver of Canton; one grandson, James Brian Keola Cox; brothers and sisters, Angelo “Big Louie” (Terri) of Austintown, Manuel of Youngstown, Michael (Lillian) of Liberty, Miguel (Sandy) of Campbell, Rose Gonzalez of Campbell, Lydia Caradine of Cleveland, Juan “John” of Youngstown and Ralph (Patty) of Struthers; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Luis Davila; a niece, Crystal Price Davila; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Davila.

Winifred I. DeToro, 91

POLAND – Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for Winifred I. DeToro, 91, who passed away Monday at Greenbriar Nursing Home.

Winnie was born June 21, 1918 in Oil City, Pa., the daughter of William and Alice August Wetzel.

She graduated from Canfield High School and she attended the Youngstown Business College, welded tank treads at Truscon Steel during World War II and was a lifelong area resident.

Her husband, Ralph DeToro Sr., whom she married on Sept. 23, 1943, passed away on May 2, 1996.

Winnie leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Ralph (Theresa) DeToro of Poland, Nick DiToro of Minneapolis and William (Emily) DeToro of Poland; a daughter, Marian (Dan) Shelton of Houston; 12 grandchildren, Ralph, Christopher (Lori), Jonathan, Joseph (Christie) and Nicole DeToro, Adriana and Margaret DiToro, William (Christine), Andrea and Lindsey DeToro and Lauren and Taylor Shelton; 13 great-grandchildren, Giana, Kara, Sam, Alexandra, Anna, Theresa, Stephanie, Krista, Alexis, Olivia, Vincent, Dominic and William DeToro; nephews, James and Robert Greier and Wayne Wetzel; and nieces, Alice Trull, Katherine Cromley, Winnie Waithman and Judy Seyler.

Winnie loved to sing, cook, and bake with the best of them. She loved to play cards, do crossword puzzles and read. “Our mother provided loving care for our father in his declining years.”

In her later years at Greenbriar Nursing Home, she loved to play frackle and bingo and really loved to win.

The family would like to thank the staff at Greenbriar for all the love and care they provided “mom.”

Paul Germanovich, 86

STRUTHERS – Paul Germanovich, 86, passed away peacefully on June 23, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Mitzi (Mary Jane Yallech) Germanovich; his four children, Paul (Julie) Germanovich, John Germanovich, Mary (Steve) Duch and Nancy (Mark) Miller; his five grandchildren, Angela Germanovich, Amanda (Billy) Lawhon, Elliott Germanovich, Arienne and Alex Miller; and two great-grandchildren, William and Wiley Lawhon.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Milan Germanovich; and stepfather, Andy Rubesa.

Paul was born in 1922 in Bessemer, Pa. to his parents, Katie (Levinsky) and Paul Germanovich.

Paul graduated from Bessemer High School in 1940, where he loved acting and singing in his school plays and assemblies.

He traveled the world with the Merchant Marines and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Paul and Mitzi were married in 1949 and spent their lives in the house he built with his stepfather, Andy Rubesa in Struthers.

Paul was a well known and talented bricklayer/stone mason for the majority of his life. His legacy will live on through the artistry of his creations, especially in fireplaces and chimneys around the Mahoning Valley.

His energy and love of life was expressed though his polka dancing, snow skiing, golfing and especially fishing at Crystal Lake. He is also known for his wonderful singing voice at church, throwing festive lamb roasts and his passion for wine making.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers.

Arrangements are being handled by the Kirila Funeral Home in Struthers, however, there will be no calling hours.

Mary Pat Lehnerd, 74

 NORTH LIMA – Mary Pat Lehnerd, 74, formerly of Boardman, passed Tuesday afternoon at Assumption Village.

 Mrs. Lehnerd was born Aug. 24, 1934 in Warren, a daughter of Paul and Winifred Barrett Clark and was a lifelong member of the community.

She was a homemaker, a member of the St. Luke Church, a member of the Appleridge Gardenaires, 500 Card Club and volunteered at St. Luke Church and School. She was a 1952 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa.

Mrs. Lehnerd is survived by sons, Patrick J. and wife, Becky of Bowie, Md., Charles F. Jr. and wife, Cathy of New Middletown, Paul A. and wife, Lisa of Boardman and Michael C. and wife, Alison of Columbiana; daughters, Maggie of Boardman and Katie Bartolomucci and husband, Donald of Windermere, Fla.; sister, Martha Powers of Worchester, Ma.; and grandchildren, Megan, Drew, Amanda, Dawn, Caitlin Lehnerd, Lauren and Donnie Bartolomucci; and step grandchildren, Jotham, Jacinda and Jairus

Her husband, Charles F. Lehnerd, whom she married June 7, 1958, passed Feb. 15, 1987.

Anthony Edward Leonelli, Jr., 60

YOUNGSTOWN – Anthony Edward Leonelli Jr., 60, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 28, 1948 in Youngstown, a son of the late Anthony Edward Leonelli Sr. and the late Anna Elizabeth (Katouche) Leonelli.

He is survived by his brother, Nick and his wife, Judith Leonelli of Mendon, Mass.; a nephew, Anthony Leonelli, a niece, Annalise Leonelli; and a dear friend, Inge Torok.

He was a 1966 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History in 1970 from Youngstown State University.

He was employed as a Social Studies teacher and also served as the Department Chair at Lakeside High School in Ashtabula.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fabrizio Funeral Home, 619 E. Indianola Ave. in Youngstown.

Marion Ann Longfield, 84

WADSWORTH – Marion Ann Longfield, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

She was born Dec. 7, 1924 in East Orange, N.J. to the late Charles and Ann Walters.

Mrs. Longfield was a 50 year member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Wadsworth, was retired from the Wadsworth City Schools, enjoyed quilting with her husband in their retirement years, family vacations at the Outer Banks, and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Walters and two sisters, Olive Robertson and Gertrude Nanfelt.

She is survived by her husband, Warren, with whom she celebrated 64 years of marriage on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 and sons and daughters-in-law; Keith and Karen Longfield of Wadsworth, Eugene and Viki Longfield of St. Louis and Bruce and Joelene Longfield of Austintown. There are six grandchildren, Erick (Sarah) Longfield, Kristie Longfield, Jason (Leslie) Longfield, Valerie (Craig) Ross, Katie (Daniel) Boarman and Chad Longfield; two great-grandchildren, Annabelle Marion Boarman and Jaden Nicole Longfield; her sister, Shirley Wyckoff; and her dear friend, Janet Fulton.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St. in Wadsworth.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Trinity United Church of Christ, 215 High St. in Wadsworth, with the Rev. James Singleton officiating.

Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

James D. McCarty, 65

APPLE VALLEY, CALIF. – Mr. James D. McCarty, 65, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully at his home in Apple Valley after a short illness.

Mr. McCarty has been a resident of Apple Valley since 1985. He was born in Youngstown, the son of Charles and Mary Thorne McCarty.

After graduating from North Lima High School, he joined the U.S. Navy in July of 1962, attaining E4 status.

Jim was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many capacities. He worked as a computer systems analyst for AGC Glass (formerly AFG) in Victorville, Calif. from its inception until he retired earlier this year.

Jim is survived by his wife, Maryann of Apple Valley; and his sons, Sean and wife, Nancy of Moses Lake, Wash., Christopher and wife, Kate and Jeffrey and wife, LeAnn of Mansfield, Texas. He also leaves 13 grandchildren; Christian J., K. Donovan, Nathan, Ryan, Joshua, Annette, Kayla, Sam, Kori, Amber, Crystal, Hyrum and Spencer. He is also survived by his sister, Mary K. Weese and her husband, Terry of North Lima; his brothers, Charles of Jacksonville, Fla. and Thomas and wife, Virginia, also of Jacksonville; and his sister-in-law, Mary C. McCarty of Lisbon, widow of Jim’s brother, Robert.

Viewing will be held at the Victor Valley Mortuary Chapel at 15609 11th St. in Victorville on Friday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 12242 Navajo Road in Apple Valley, officiated by Bishop Carey Packer. The burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park, 24000 Waalew Road in Apple Valley.

Ida “Bunny” Zell McKinley, 65

UNIONTOWN – Ida “Bunny” Zell McKinley, 65, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at her home after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.

Bunny was born on Staten Island in New York on Jan. 22, 1944, the daughter of Adolph and Ida (Wagner) Zell. Although she was born in New York, she was raised in Youngstown and later lived in Arizona, Texas and Florida, before finally returning to Ohio, in Uniontown.

Bunny leaves her beloved husband of 40 years, David; her two sons, Kevin (fiancee, Dawn) and Shon (Liz); her five grandchildren, Kristen, Rachael, Andrew, Lydia and Rebecca; her brothers, James (Linda) of Charlotte, N.C. and David (Ana) of Mirimar, Fla.; her sisters, Cheryl (Marty) Theisler of Austintown and Debra (Danny) Jackson of Kingston Springs, Tenn.; and her precious dog, Heidi.

Preceding her in death was her father, Adolph Zell, who passed away in 1984; and her grandparents, John and Wilhelmena Wagner and Michael and Maria Zell.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She and her husband loved to dance. “Her spirit will live on in our hearts fovever!”

She spent many happy hours playing cards and working crossword puzzles. She was blessed with the ability of writing, especially her beautiful poetry. A favorite past-time for Bunny was caring for all the many birds and critters that visited her backyard everyday. She also had a natural ability for remodeling and redecorating her home.

A private prayer service will be held in Akron on Friday, June 26, 2009, where arrangements are being handled by the Adams-Mason Funeral Home in Akron. (Phone: (330) 535-9186.

Allan Craig Muter, 97

BOARDMAN – Allan Craig Muter, 97, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his residence.

His wife, the former Grace L. Parfitt, whom he married Oct. 3, 1936, died Nov. 16, 1989.

Mr. Muter was born March 31, 1912 in Girard, a son of Charles G. and Theadora A. Mowbray Muter.

He was employed 37 years by Republic Steel Corporation and was a supervisor in the bindery of the printing department, retiring in March of 1977.

He was a lifetime member of the Mahoning Valley Management Association. He attended Youngstown State University. He joined Hillman Masonic Lodge, F. & A.M. 481 on Jan. 10, 1945, and was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.

He was a Christian all of his life and attended the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He was a master craftsman in bookbinding, wood working and also steel working.

He is survived by a son, Paul A. Muter, with whom he made his home; a daughter, Lucille C. Fitch of Boardman; six granddaughters, Joyce (Nello) Ruscitti, Julie (Dale) Rhoades, Laura (Matthew) Lascola, Amy (Jay) Reecer, Jeaneen Flyak and Dr. Jeanette (Dr. David) Rich; and eight great-grandchildren, Diana, Catherine, Gregory, Craig, Joseph, Alexa, Jacquelyn and Lauren.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham Becker Funeral Home in Poland.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

Donald M. “Ky” Pantalone, 82

BOARDMAN — Services will be at noon Friday at St. Christine Catholic Church for Donald M. “Ky” Pantalone, 82, who passed away Wednesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

He was born Feb. 19, 1927 in Youngstown, the son of James and Emily Schiavone Pantalone and was a lifelong area resident.

Ky was a firefighter for the city of Youngstown for 36 years, retiring in 1986, a member of the Firefighters Union No. 312, Police and Firefighters Retirees of Ohio Local 70. He was a stage hand at Powers and belonged to the IATSE International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. He was a military veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. Christine Church, was an avid  golfer and a member at Stambaugh Golf Course for 50 years.

Donald is survived by his wife, the former Sylvia Jianopoulos, whom he married Aug. 25,1963; two nephews, James Loto of Youngstown and George (Viviana) Jianopoulos of Weston, Fla.; a niece, Jeani (Jerome) Harrell of Youngstown; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Elizabeth (Nicholas) Loto and Niomi Panno; a brother-in-law, John (Rosemary) Jianopoulos; and a great-nephew, Joseph Loto.

Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman and on Friday from 11 to 11:55 a.m. at St.Christine Church.

Burial will take place at Belmont Park Cemetery.

Dr. Juan A. Ruiz, 75

POLAND – Dr. Juan A. Ruiz, 75, died June 23, 2009 at his home.

Dr. Ruiz was born June 22, 1934 in the Dominican Republic, a son of Manuel and Dalinda Ruiz. He came to this area in 1958.

He was a graduate of the Universidad de Santo Domingo with a medical degree in internal medicine and cardiology. Dr. Ruiz did his training at Cleveland Clinic, University Hospital, and St. Elizabeth Health Center. Dr. Ruiz had his own private practice in Boardman for 35 years, retiring in 2000.

He was past president of the Mahoning County Medical Society, a member of the Boardman Lion’s Club and the Full Gospel Businessmen. Dr. Ruiz was a founding member of the Cornerstone Assembly of God in North Lima.

He leaves his wife, the former Marilyn Vale, whom he married Dec. 27, 1958; three daughters, Dalinda (Bradley) Marshall of Boardman, Lorraine (Craig) Hoffman of Poland, and Denise (Kerry) Green of Carrollton; three sons, John (Teri) Ruiz of North Lima, Robert (Darla) Ruiz of Girard and Mark Ruiz of Poland; four sisters, Dalinda, Leila and Blanca, all of the Dominican Republic, and Antonia of Palm Coast, Fla.; three brothers, Manuel and Ricardo, both of the Dominican Republic and Claudio of Wellington, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, Adam, Kristen, Ryan, Alex, and Bret Marshall, Amanda, Samuel, and Glen Hoffman, Jon, Nathan, Jacob, and Shea Ruiz, Erin and Evan Green and Jared, Jenna, Jesse, and Gina Ruiz.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesus and Josian; and a sister, Mary.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cornerstone Assembly of God.

Family and friends will be received Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Saturday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the church.

Leon “Lee” Melville Thompson, 80

VIENNA – Leon “Lee” Melville Thompson, 80, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.

Lee was born May 27, 1929 in Niles, the son of the late Harold and Emily (Balciar) Thompson, and was a graduate of Niles McKinley High School class of 1947.

Lee was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the USS Albany in 17 different countries.

After being discharged from the Navy, Lee attended Youngstown College.

Lee was an eagle scout, Master Mason at the Copper Penny Lodge No. 778 of Vienna, where he served as treasurer, past president of Vienna Kiwanis Club and was a journeyman electrician.

Lee was employed at Van Huffle Tube for 21 years, as a store keeper, an electrician and Midwest sales manager for the power strut division. Lee originated Yankee Electric Supply (YESCO) that prospered for six years, before sadly being taken over by stockholders in the mid-1980s.

He and his wife, Fran, then started and operated Contractors Supply in Vienna for three years.

Lee enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and working on their acreage in Vienna, where he built their home over 50 years ago, along with several barns, a cabin, two pavillons and a green house. He also enjoyed finding junk for his artistic wife to paint on.

“If you have been to any of our local parades and saw Uncle Sam riding a horsecycle, that was LEON.”

In February, Lee made maple syrup from sap gathered on their property. He also enjoyed feeding the fish at the lake on the edge of their land. Lee scuba dived and sailed canoes and grew a big garden. He lived a full life and claimed he had the best family and the best friends a man could ever ask for.

Lee is survived by his wife of 52 years, the former Frances “Fran” (Venosky) Thompson. whom he married June 22, 1957; a son. Mitchel (Pam) Thompson of Vienna; a daughter, Tiffin (Rick) Thomas Best of Howland Township; brothers, Hal (Jackie) Thompson of Arcadia, Fla. and Ron (Mary Lou) Thompson of Southington; and four grandchildren, Courtney Collins, Alex Thomas, Leesha Thompson and Richele Best.

Calling hours will take place today, June 25, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Roberts Clark Funeral Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive NE in Warren, where the Copper Penny Lodge No. 778 will hold a service at 7 p.m.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, June 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna with full military honors.

The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to The Scholarship Fund of Copper Penny Lodge No. 778, c/o Copper Penny Lodge No. 778, 4275 Warren-Sharon Road, Vienna, OH 44473.

Eleanor A. Wardle, 83

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman and at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church in Youngstown for Eleanor A. Wardle, 83, who died early the morning of June 24, at Greenbriar Healthcare Center.

Mrs. Wardle was born in Youngstown on Jan. 27, 1926, a daughter of Stephen and Susan Onusko Ellis.

Eleanor attended Chaney High School and lived in the area all of her life.

She was a member of Holy Name Church.

She was also a homemaker and devoted to her family. She especially loved and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her little dog, “Chico.” She also enjoyed bowling, working puzzles and watching football.

Besides her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Donald H. Wardle, whom she married June 20, 1948, and who died March 20, 2001; her infant son, Ronald Wardle; and her brothers, Robert and Richard Ellis.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Lewis) Shane of North Lima and April Augustine of New Springfield; her grandsons, Frank (Brandy Black) Augustine of New Springfield and Donald Augustine of De Pere, Wis.; her granddaughters, Amy (Jeff) Carr of North Lima, Courtney (Robert) Moore of Boardman, Jillian Shane of North Lima and Danielle Augustine of Columbus; her great-grandchildren, Bailey and Cameron Carr, Nicole Augustine, Landon Moore and Alexandria Treharn; her sisters, Helen Hucko of Austintown, Mary (George) Skebo of Youngstown, Ruth (Ray) Greco of Boardman and Pat (Bill) Tucker of Poland; her sisters-in-law, Helen Ellis of Girard and Donna Ellis of Austintown; and her many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
