Leanne M. Bayerl, 40

POLAND – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for Leanne M. Bayerl, 40, formerly of Shaler Township, who passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.

Leanne was the beloved wife of Richard A. Bayerl Jr.; dear mother of Lauren and Emily Bayerl; a daughter of Patricia (Milka) and the late Michael Mikita; daughter-in-law of Richard Sr. and Sandi Bayerl; a sister of Lori Mikita, Allyson (Todd) Gally and the late Lisa Mikita; sister-in-law of Lora (Roy) Sembach and Matthew Bayerl; and also two nieces.

The family will be receiving friends at the Walter J. Zalewski Funeral Home, 216 44th St. in Lawrenceville, Pa. today, June 27, 2009, from 1 to 9 p.m.

Local arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, where the family will be receiving friends Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 1 to 5 p.m.



Marie A Bydo, 86

BOARDMAN – There will be services on Monday, June 29, at 9:15 a.m. at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St Luke Church with the Rev. Kenneth Miller celebrating, for Marie A. Bydo, 86, who passed away Friday morning June 26, at the Mahoning Valley Hospital.

Marie was born Nov. 5, 1922 in Youngstown, the daughter of James and Angela Moore Bebackwa. She graduated from East High School in 1941.

Her husband, whom she married, Oct. 16, 1948, died Sept. 1, 1990.

Marie worked as an interviewer for the Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation, retiring after 30 years of dedication in 1984. She was a member of St. Luke Church. Marie loved spending time with her daughter, Christine, and having family gatherings.

Marie will be sadly missed by her daughter, Christine of Boardman; sisters, Rita Kozak of Youngstown, Kathryn (Edward) Sekula of Boardman, Delores (Chris) Baharis of Michigan and Gloria (Edward) Mahoney of Boardman; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Phyllis Nigro, Josephine Griffith and Mary Olguin.

Friends may call on Sunday, June 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave. in Boardman.



Keith “Casey” L. Carlson Jr., 50

CRIDERSVILLE – Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2009, at the Shawnee Chapel Chiles-Laman Funeral Home in Lima, with Rabbi Javier E. Caltapan officiating, for Keith “Casey” L. Carlson Jr., 50, who passed away at 11.47 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

Keith was born Aug. 22, 1958 in Washington D.C., the son of Keith L. and Irene L. (Vacca) Carlson Sr.

Keith was a clinical pharmacist at St. Rita’s Medical Center for 18 years, he truly loved being a pharmacist and thoroughly loved working at St. Rita’s Hospital.

He was a past member of A.S.P.E.N.

He volunteered to teach critical care lectures to nurses and he would talk to new nurses about how to care for a sick patient. He volunteered to talk to patients diagnosed with catastrophic illnesses.

Keith was a master of all trades and strived for perfection in everything he did. He was a very loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother and son.

Keith is survived by his wife, Tracy D. (Cohen) Carlson of Cridersville, whom he marred March 22, 1980. He also leaves his parents of Canfield; a daughter, Heidi D. Owens of Lima; two sons, Keith L. (Lauren) Carlson III of Columbus and Craig A Carlson of Dayton; three sisters, Tina (Bill) Wepler, of Plano, Texas, Robin (Michael) Martinelli of Berlin Center and Dianne (Joe) Gregor of Vista, Calif.; two brothers, Raymond (Lori) Carlson of Lowelville and Mark (Lisa) Carlson of Buffalo, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Nathan, Ethan and Austin Owens.

Family and friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shawnee Chapel Chiles-Laman Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made to the family which will be used for a plaque in his memory to be installed at the College of Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.

Winifred I. DeToro, 91

POLAND – Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for Winifred I. DeToro, 91, who passed away Monday at Greenbriar Nursing Home.

Winnie was born June 21, 1918 in Oil City, Pa., the daughter of William and Alice August Wetzel.

She graduated from Canfield High School and she attended the Youngstown Business College, welded tank treads at Truscon Steel during World War II and was a lifelong area resident.

Her husband, Ralph DeToro Sr., whom she married on Sept. 23, 1943, passed away on May 2, 1996.

Winnie leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Ralph (Theresa) DeToro of Poland, Nick DiToro of Minneapolis and William (Emily) DeToro of Poland; a daughter, Marian (Dan) Shelton of Houston; 12 grandchildren, Ralph, Christopher (Lori), Jonathan, Joseph (Christie) and Nicole DeToro, Adriana and Margaret DiToro, William (Christine), Andrea and Lindsey DeToro and Lauren and Taylor Shelton; 13 great-grandchildren, Giana, Kara, Sam, Alexandra, Anna, Theresa, Stephanie, Krista, Alexis, Olivia, Vincent, Dominic and William DeToro; nephews, James and Robert Greier and Wayne Wetzel; and nieces, Alice Trull, Katherine Cromley, Winnie Waithman and Judy Seyler.

Winnie loved to sing, cook, and bake with the best of them. She loved to play cards, do crossword puzzles and read. “Our mother provided loving care for our father in his declining years.”

In her later years at Greenbriar Nursing Home, she loved to play frackle and bingo and really loved to win.

The family would like to thank the staff at Greenbriar for all the love and care they provided “mom.”

Arthur S. Filomena, 87

WAUSAU, WIS. – Arthur S. Filomena, 87, passed away at Hospice House in Wausau, Wis. on June 24, 2009.

Art was born in Niles, the son of Antonio Filomena and Antoinette DiBernardi Filomena on April 15, 1922.

He was a graduate of Niles McKinley High School, class of 1940.

He served in World War II in Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division in Southern and Northern France as part of the Normandy Invasion force. He received several medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal, and Honorable Discharge Emblem. He was member of the Disabled American Veterans.

After discharge from the military, he worked in civilian service for 20 years, first for the Army at the Lordstown Military Reservation as a supervisor and Programs Analyst, and for the Vienna Air Base, Air Force 910th Troop Carrier Group, Youngstown Municipal Airport. He retired on May 18, 1966. He then worked for ITT Grinnell, Warren for 10 years as security supervisor until his retirement in 1978.

In retirement, he was an avid gardener moving to the country to have more space to pursue this interest. He also enjoyed woodcraft, sketching, painting and restoring antique furniture. He will be most remembered for his tough spirit, his soft heart and his winning smile.

His wife Mary Carl Filomena, whom he married Nov. 21, 1944, died March 12 1998. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Vera Sabatini, Victoria Patrella, Carmella Ambriola and Sylvia Scarmuzzi and brothers, James Cuccarese, Joseph Cuccarese and Vincent Philomena.

His family includes a daughter, Toni Reinhart and her husband, Rick of Wausau;, grandchildren; Richard Reinhart of Raleigh, N.C.; grand-daughter, Antoinette Marie Miller, her husband, Keith Miller; and great–granddaughters, Mary Antoinette and Alexandra Marie of Atlanta.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Niles, where the Mt. Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 4:30 p.m.

Funeral services with be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Niles with Fr. Thomas Kraszewski officiating, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Niles City Cemetery where Art will be honored for his military service by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.

Dr. Boyd “Ed” Graves, 57

SAN DIEGO – Dr. Graves’ two decades of human rights’ work, judicial activism and research on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS, catapulted him into the world spotlight earning him both international acclaim for his bravery and dedication as well as criticisms for his controversial conclusions about the man-made origins and purpose of the HIV/AIDS virus.

Born on July 10, 1952 in Charleston, W.Va. to James and Theresa Graves, Boyd.

While in attendance at Annapolis, Md., Dr. Graves received a B.S. degree with minors in Engineering and Mandarin Chinese. He also lettered in boxing and elected the first African-American president of the world renowned Navy Glee Club. During his senior year at the academy, he was the only midshipman to serve on the Brigade staff the entire year. He was the first African American on a Navy Recruiter poster, which made history.

Dr. Graves is the lead plaintiff in the federal lawsuit for AIDS apology and reparations. He is also the Director-AIDS CONCERNS for the international medical research foundation, Common Cause, headquartered in Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Boyd Ed Graves was a celebrated lecturer and the author of several books, including “STATE ORIGIN: The Evidence of the Laboratory Birth of AIDS,” and “World War AIDS: The Third World War.” Dr. Graves was working on his memoir and other manuscripts at the time of his death.

Dr. Boyd “Ed” Graves was preceded in death by his parents, James and Theresa Graves and is survived by four brothers and four sisters, including, Jesse James Graves III of Cleveland, Jimmy Graves of Cincinnati, Jeffrey Graves of Cleveland, David Graves of Youngstown, Michelle (Graves) Beachman of Youngstown, Maxine (Graves) Jones of Cleveland, Mary (Graves) Thomas of Cleveland and Theresa (Graves) Wiggins of Youngstown.

Visitation will be held today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Mount Auburn Community Room in Cleveland.

Kenneth W. Hall, 60

SALEM – Kenneth W. Hall, 60, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Salem Community Hospital.

Kenny was born on March 5, 1949, the son of the late William and Mary Jane (Smiles) Hall.

Mr. Hall was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and a 26 year member of the National Guard. He was also a member of the Alliance DAV and the Ellsworth Sportsman’s Club. Kenny was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, Darlene (Krepps) Hall of Salem; a son, Dennis (Lois) Ball of North Canton; a daughter, Bonnie (Gerald) Streeter of Salem; a son, Danny (April) Hall of Alliance; and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Mary (Danny) Barnett of Beloit and two brothers, Robert W. Hall of Salem and Sherman (Jane) Hall of Sebring.

Besides his parents, Kenny was preceded in death by his sister, Janice and a brother, Clifford.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joseph Peters officiating.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Beloit.

Norma J. Hollander, 69

HUBBARD – Norma J. Hollander, 69, died Friday morning, June 26, 2009, at her residence.

She was born June 24, 1940 in Hubbard, a daughter of Frank and Thelma Schotten Schmidt and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

Mrs. Hollander was a 1958 graduate of Hubbard High School, a homemaker and had previously worked for Ben Franklin in Hubbard and Girard. She was also a personal care aid at Shenango Inn in Hermitage, Pa.

Norma enjoyed bowling, cooking, crocheting and fishing.

Her husband, Theodore T. Hollander, whom she married April 21, 1969, died June 19, 1987.

She leaves a son, Glenn T. Hollander; a daughter, Janis Hollander, both of Hubbard; and two grandchildren, Derek and Shane Hollander.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Richard and David Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home.

Family and friends may call on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Shaianne Constance Jhone Johns, 7 months

STRUTHERS – On June 23, 2009, the angels welcomed a new playmate to heaven. Shaianne Constance Jhone Johns, 7 months, was greeted by God and his heavenly host to join his other special children and beautify his celestial garden.

Shaianne was born Nov. 7, 2008 to the loving parents of Bennie Johns Jr. and Shalia A. Goode.

Though her time on earth was short, Shaianne loved to play and pull hair. She loved to chew on her fingers and was just getting the hang of sucking her thumb.

She will be sadly missed by her loving parents, Bennie Johns Jr. and Shalia A. Goode; two brothers, Bennie Johns III of Boardman and Ejhon Goode of Struthers; grandparents, Robyn Howie and Annie Lewis, both of Youngstown; great-grandparents, Ralph and Gloria Howie of Coitsville; great-great-grandmother, Helen L. Howie of Youngstown; aunts, Melissa Howie of Cleveland, Jazmyne Heath and Nyah Dabney, both of Youngstown, Kenya Howie of Columbus and Andrea Onyemelukwe of Michigan; uncles, Mark Heath Jr., Izaiah Dabney and Noah Dabney, all of Youngstown; a special cousin, Tiffany Chester of Pennsylvania; and a host of other family and friends.

Friends may call Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home.

Robert Kwiecinski, 61

GIRARD – Robert Kwiecinski, 61, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

He was born June 14, 1948 in Youngstown, the son of the late Felix and Ethel Kwiecinski.

He earned a Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Youngstown State University and was a member of the YSU Honor Society.

He was truck driver.

Robert was very artistic. He worked with porcelain dolls and crocheted.

He is survived by Kathleen (Johnson) Kwiecinski, whom he married in 1978; a son, Robert J. Kwiecinski of Girard; two daughters, Christina Kwiecinski of Girard and Terri Prusky (Dennis) of Newton Falls; a sister, Noreen Frank Zlatkoff (Andy) of Campbell; and five grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Tremayne.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.

Rosena M. Lubert, 94

GIRARD - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald for Rosena M. Lubert, 94, who died Thursday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

She was born Aug. 17, 1914 in Girard, the daughter of the late Edward J. and Minnie Ida (Hogue) O’Brien.

She was a homemaker, a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and an avid card player. Before she was married, she worked 12 years at Ohio Leather Works.

She married Dominic J. “Bates” Lubert on March 13, 1944, and he passed away Aug. 22, 2005.

She is survived by two daughters, Rose Ann Lubert and Mary Ellen (Ron) Britt, both of Girard; three grandchildren, Christine (Joe) Criscione, Kathleen (Eugene) Schneider and Colleen (Bernard) Scott; and three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Joe and Lily.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, Edward J. O’Brien, Ann Breese, Mary Barry, Leo O’Brien, Loretta Hughes and Alberta Schooley.

Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 5 pm at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard and from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

Burial will be at Girard City Cemetery.

Beverly Siman, 79

BOARDMAN – Funeral services will be held Monday, June 29, at 10 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown, for Beverly Siman, 79, who passed away the afternoon of June 24, at her residence.

Mrs. Siman was born in Youngstown on Sept. 8, 1929, a daughter of Robert and Thelma Edelman Houk.

Beverly was a 1948 graduate of South High School and a lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of St. Dominic Church. She worked for Buddy’s Furniture and then Haber’s before accepting employment at Sears Roebuck and Company. She retired from Sears in 1993 after 25 years of service. She loved spending time with her little dog, Lewie.

Besides her parents, Beverly was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Siman Sr., whom she married Oct. 30, 1948, and who died Sept. 26, 1999; her brother, Milan Siman; and her sisters, June Megela, Mary Kirtin and Nedra Szanyi.

She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Richard L. Siman Jr. and Randall (Barb) Siman, both of Boardman; her daughter, Heidi Siman and granddaughter, Samantha Siman, both also of Boardman; her sister, Arlene (George) Habib of Poland; and her brother, Robert (Ellie) Houk of Tacoma, Wash.

Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.

Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Angels For Animals Inc.
