Donna Antal, 71

STRUTHERS – Donna Antal, 71, died Wednesday evening at her residence after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Donna was born Feb. 26, 1938 in Youngstown, a daughter of Harry and Winifred Bohn Schilling and was a lifelong resident of Struthers.

A 1956 graduate of Struthers High School, Donna was a homemaker. She had also worked at Montgomery Ward, Casey’s Restaurant and then in collections for Gold Cross Ambulance.

She was a member of St. Joseph the Provider Church in Campbell, the Altar and Rosary Society, Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the Renewal Committee. Donna was also a member of the 1956 Class Reunion Committee.

Besides her husband, Richard Antal, whom she married Oct. 12, 1957, she leaves two daughters, Michelle (Larry) Wichert of Henderson, Nev. and Debbie Madorno of Poland; one son, Rick (Norma) Antal of Henderson; one sister, Linda Deidrick of New Springfield; and four grandchildren, Deanna Madorno, Danielle Timkovich, Claudia and Jonathan Ramirez. Donna also leaves behind five sisterhood friends, Joann, Marie, Helen, Anne, and Marianne.

Donna was loved by many and was an inspiration because of her strong faith and will.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel and at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph the Provider with Fr. Michael Swierz officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery in Lowellville.

Friends will be received Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Poland where the Altar and Rosary Society will conduct a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.

Stephen J. Begalla, 52

BOARDMAN – Prayers will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Matthias Church for Stephen J. Begalla, 52, who passed away unexpectedly at his residence Wednesday July 1, 2009.

Stephen was born July 23, 1956 in Youngstown, the son of Stephen J. and Eleanore E. Ekoniak Begalla.

Stephen was a 1974 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and received his associate degree in accounting from Youngstown State University. Stephen worked in the Youngstown Public School System as a teachers aide with the Department of Special Education. He served on the Boardman Township Fire Department for the past 18 years. He was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Matthias Church in Youngstown.

Stephen leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Diana L. Mauch, whom he married Oct. 12, 2002; his father, Stephen Begalla of Pulaski, Pa., stepfather, William (Agnes) Janosko of Austintown; a sister, Michele (Dennis) Minotti of Columbus; a niece, Jennifer (Justin) Viau of Columbus; a nephew, Dr. Dennis (Brooke) Minotti D.O. of Southlake, Texas; a stepson, Joseph (Elizabeth) Skowron of Austintown; two step-daughters, Laurelin (Anthony) Wendt of Youngstown and Mary Skowron of Richmond, Va.; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Stephen was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanore E. Janosko and grandparents, Agnes and Michael Ekoniak and Anna and Stephen Begalla.

The family will be receiving friends Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to St. Matthias Church in Stephan’s memory.

Frederick C. Britton Sr.

YOUNGSTOWN – In loving memory of Frederick C. Britton Sr., who was born Nov. 5, 1942, and died in his home on Sunday, June 28.

Mr. Britton is survived by several children; one brother; two sisters; grandchildren; and other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held on July 7, at 2 p.m. at 2233 Elm St. in Youngstown.

Caring arrangements have been entrusted to the Howard-Rhoden Memorial Home.

Kathleen L. (Weaver) Brownlie, 81

YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Monday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Michael Church, celebrated by Father Terrence Hazel for Kathleen L. (Weaver) Brownlie, 81, who passed away Wednesday morning at her residence. 

Kathleen was born Aug. 24, 1927 in Youngstown, the daughter of Earl E. Weaver and Catherine M. (Clark) Weaver.

On May 11, 1946, she became the devoted and loving wife to husband, Richard J. Brownile, who preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2006.

Kathleen was a member of St. Michael Church, St. Christine Church and belonged to the Infant Jesus of Prague. She was also a member of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine.

Kathleen’s last employment was with 0’Connor’s Sales and Service.

Kathleen is survived by her brother, John C. (Patricia) Weaver of Canfield; her sister, Marjorie E. Hutcheson of Boardman, as well as her 10 children. She had seven sons, Richard J. II (Debra), Robert J. and Roger J., all of Canfield, Randall J. of Pinellas Park, Fla. and Ronald J., Raymond J. and Rodney J., all of Youngstown. She had three daughters, Kathleen L. (Paul) Rogers of Boardman, Karen L. McClusky of Liberty Hill, Texas and Kim L. (Mark) Norris of Canfield; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Besides her beloved husband and parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her brother, Earl W. Weaver; sisters, Luana M. Jarvis and Dolores A. Marmagin; and also her granddaughter, Lisa M. Ropp.

“Kathleen leaves us with an amazing legacy full of family traditions and will greatly be missed.”

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Joseph E. Carver, 85

KIRKLAND, WASH. – Former local resident, Joseph E. Carver, 85, died July 1, 2009 at Evergreen Hospice House in Kirkland.

Joe was born Oct. 4, 1923 in Youngstown, the son of Ira J. and Bertha Evans Carver.

He was married to Yvonne Burgett in 1950; and she died Nov. 5, 1986.

Joe served three years in the Army during World War II. He was a structural operating engineer, retiring in 1985.

Joe leaves behind a sister, Lola B. (William) Wilson of Seotia, N.Y.; his fiancee, Doris Maurice of Seatac, Wash. and Yuma, Ariz.; and four generations of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Glenn, Gerald and Gene; and a sister, Lois Guthrie.

There will be no services or calling hours at his request.

Interment will take place at Canfield East Cemetery in Canfield.

Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.



Daniel Ciccone, 78

STRUTHERS – Daniel Ciccone, 78, died Wednesday morning at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dan was born Feb. 10, 1931 in Lowellville, a son of Venanzio and Lucia Battaglina Ciccone. He was raised in Lowellville and came to Struthers in 1964.

A 1949 graduate of Lowellville High School, Dan served five years in the U.S. Navy and four years with the U.S. Air Force.

Dan worked for 18 years as a general foreman at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Campbell Works. From there he went to Brier Hill Works as a general foreman. He was then sent to the Crucible Steel Plant in Midland, Pa., to restart the plant for Lykes Corp., which later became J&L Specialties Steel. He retired in March of 1989 after 30 years of service.

Dan loved spending time with his family, and his cat, Muffin, and loved working in his garden. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed his “Friday” golf group. He was also a member of the Buckeye Golf League at Reserve Run Golf Course, where he made his “famous” Hole-in-One.

Dan was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers.

Besides his wife, Janet, whom he married Aug. 25, 1959, Dan leaves five sons, Dan (Kathryn) Ciccone of Tampa, Fla., David (Cindy) Ciccone and Vince Ciccone, both of Struthers, Dean (Nanci) Ciccone of Austintown and Donald (Megan) Ciccone of Poland; nine grandchildren, Brianne, Mariah, Dalton, Sarah, Matthew, Alannah, Michael, Nicholas and Natalie; two sisters, Linda Docherty of Lowellville and Antoinette Owens of Huntingtown, Md.; and one brother, Richard (Shirley) Ciccone of Struthers.

Besides his parents, Dan was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Ciccone and Tony Ciccone; a sister, Rose Morocco; and two brothers-in-law, John Docherty and Jim Owens.

Memorial services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, with Deacon John Terranova officiating.

Family and friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eva M. Convery, 67

AUSTINTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, preceded by closing prayers at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, for Eva M. Convery, 67, who passed away Wednesday at her home.

Eva was born Dec. 12, 1941 in Lakewood, N.J., a daughter of the late John and Eva (Brooks) Simmonds.

A graduate of the University of Wyoming, she was a 5th and 6th grade teacher at Boardman Center Middle School for 30 years, and a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where she taught CCD.

After retirement, Eva taught as a substitute for the Austintown Local School District. She loved her family, and the children that she taught. She also loved planting flowers.

Eva is survived by her husband, Dr. William R. Convery, whom she married July 10, 1960; two sons, Shawn (JoAnn) Convery of Austintown and Brian Convery of Columbus; two sisters, Sharon Linert of New Jersey and Collen Doyle of Bricktown, N.J.; one brother, Jackie Simmonds of Roselle Park, N.J.; and two granddaughters, Sarah and Chiara Convery.

Kurt R. Platzer, 32

WARREN – Kurt R. Platzer, 32, died Monday afternoon, June 29, 2009, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren of cardiac arrest.

He was born Dec. 23, 1976 in Dayton, the son of Richard V. Platzer and Joan C. (Reichenbach) Padula and was a lifetime Trumbull County resident.

Kurt was a 1995 graduate of Lakeview High School. He worked as a screen printer in the area for the past 12 years. He was raised in and had been a member of the Cortland United Methodist Church. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Youngstown Steelhounds fan.

Kurt enjoyed helping his brother-in-law, Scott, work on his race car. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews and loved his two dogs, Baby and Mutski.

Kurt was an organ donor and several people will benefit from his thoughtful organ donation.

Kurt is survived by his mom and dad, Joan C. and Robert L. Padula of Paris Township; his father, Richard of Camdenton, Mo.; his grandparents, John and Martha Reichenbach of Columbus; two sisters, Jodell Platzer of Dayton and Janel (Scott) Strock of Southington; one brother, Kyle Platzer of Warren; four nieces, Caitlyn, Mackenzie, Samantha and Morgan Strock; and two nephews, Jamee and Evan Wise.

Arrangements are being handled by the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, with Pastor Yesudas Devadan officiating. Cremation will be held following the service.

Alfa A. Sefcik, 83

YOUNGSTOWN – Alfa A. Sefcik, 83, of the city’s west side, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 1, 2009, at Meridian Arms Living Center following a brief illness.

Alfa was born Jan. 17, 1926 in Bugnara, Italy, a daughter of the late Frank and Philomena Casasanta Castrucci, and came to America through Ellis Island with her family as a child, settling in Youngstown.

She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, was a homemaker, and also worked at JoAnn Fabrics for a time.

Alfa was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church. She dedicated her life to raising her family and thoroughly loved the time she spent with them. She also enjoyed traveling, cooking, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with her friends.

Mrs. Sefcik leaves her beloved husband of 59 years, John A. Sefcik Jr., whom she married Feb. 18, 1950; four sons, John A. III (Ginny) Sefcik of Canfield, James E. (Michelle) Sefcik of Solon, Thomas J. (Lynnette) Sefcik of Hoover, Ala., and David P. (Mary Ann) Sefcik of Howland; three daughters, Susan A. (Vince) Casey of Austintown, Patricia M. (Ray) Hernan of Gaithersburg, Md., and Marianne (Bob) Hallapy of Hubbard; 14 grandchildren, Missy, Jill, Julie, Ryan, Stephanie, Colleen, Stacey, Jenna, Laura, Vince, Andrew, Rachel, Kimmy, and Justin; and two sisters, Ida Ambrosini of Boardman and Vera (Joe) DeFuria of Youngstown.

Alfa will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Alfa today, July 3, at the Holy Name of Jesus Church. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Youngstown.

Nicholas Zatvarnicky, 93

YOUNGSTOWN – Nicholas Zatvarnicky, 93, of the city’s west side, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, July 1, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Nicholas was born Dec. 15, 1915 in Youngstown, a son of the late Michael and Paraska Makar Zatvarnicky, and was a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Zatvarnicky served in the U.S. Army during World War II with General Patton’s 3rd Army, where he was a decorated member of Easy Company in the 2nd Battalion, 318th Regiment, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Nick worked for 43 and a half years for U.S. Steel at the McDonald Works, retiring from the 42” strip mill in 1978.

Nick was a member of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church. He enjoyed collecting antiques, was an avid bowler, and liked to work in his yard.

His wife, Mildred Loverich Zatvarnicky, whom he married Nov. 20, 1941, passed away Aug. 21, 2005.

Nick leaves his brother, Pete (Minnie DiMuzio) Zatvarnicky of Girard; his sister, Helen Leko of Tucson, Ariz.; his granddaughter, Simone Sims of Boardman; his daughter-in-law, Melissa Varner of Boardman; and several nieces and nephews.

Nick will be truly missed by all who and loved him.

Besides his wife, a son, Don Varner; two brothers, John and Michael Zatvarnicky; and three sisters, Catherine Pachell, Aster Sklepko and Annie Tomaino are also deceased.

Family and friends may call today, July 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.

Interment with military honors will follow at Belmont Park Cemetery in Liberty Township.

Melinda Fodiak Zuppo, 58

YORK, S.C. – Ms. Melinda Fodiak Zuppo, 58, of 2914 Chester Highway, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 6, 2009, at the Divine Saviour Catholic Church, 232 Herndon Ave. in York. Entombment will follow at the home in the family mausoleum.

A native of Pittsburgh, Melinda was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne Swartz Fodiak and the widow of Gerald Anthony Zuppo Sr.

A member of the Divine Saviour Catholic Church, she was a homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Surviving are her son, Jerry Zuppo Jr. and wife, Melissa; three brothers, Mike Foriska of Pittsburgh, George Foriska of Austintown and Joe Foriska, also of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Vivian Culp and husband, Dave of Carrollton, Texas and Susan Garrett and husband, Jeff of Dallas, Texas; and two grandchildren, Miss Nikkie Zuppo and Jerry Zuppo I.

In addition to her parents and husband, Melinda was preceded in death by her son, Jeff Zuppo and her mother-in-law, Anna Zuppo.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732 and other times at the home.

A Vigil Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the visitation.
