Louis M. Brooks Jr., 77

AUSTINTOWN – Louis M. Brooks Jr., 77, passed away late Tuesday morning, July 7, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Brooks was born March 12, 1932 in Youngstown, a son of the late Louis M. Sr. and Iona Moyer Brooks, and was a lifelong area resident.

Lou attended The Rayen School and was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War and receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Lou was a truck driver for over 20 years for McNicholas Trucking.

He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Austintown, where he was a volunteer for various parish functions, including the annual festival. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Girard Aerie, was a social member of the ITAM Club and a member of the Teamsters Union.

Lou was an active member of Girard VFW Post No. 419, serving as four-time commander of the post and volunteered for nearly all of the post functions. He enjoyed cooking roast beef and his famous “Lou Burgers” for his fellow VFW members, and liked to play Santa Claus for the VFW during the holiday season.

Mr. Brooks leaves his wife, Nancy Johngrass Brooks, whom he married Aug. 29, 1953; his son, Robert A. Brooks of Austintown; two granddaughters, whom he and his wife raised, Sonya Brooks McKinstry of Boardman and Gina Brooks (Anthony) Batiste of DuPont, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Gavin, Tyanna and Kayla; and his half-sister, Betty Butram of Arizona.

Lou will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A daughter, Elaine A. Brooks Tylicki, passed away in 1984. Two brothers, Ronald and Raymond Brooks, are also deceased.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 10, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road in Youngstown.

Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, and continue at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.

Dorothy D. Carty, 87

CHAMPION – Dorothy D. Carty, 87, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, in the emergency room of Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.

She was born May 21, 1922 in Niles, the daughter of Roy and Cora (Phillips) Daley, and had lived in Trumbull County all her life.

A graduate of Niles McKinley High School, Mrs. Carty attended Youngstown Business College.

She worked 36 years in the Payroll Department at Packard Electric, retiring in 1980.

She had taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church in Niles and the Champion Presbyterian Church, and had served as a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

She enjoyed knitting, reading, travel, and spending time with her family.

Surviving is her husband, Richard E. Carty, whom she married Nov. 23, 1943; a daughter, Cathy J. Carty of Champion; and two sisters, Beatrice Miller and Joan Garvin, both of Niles.

Preceding her in death are her parents and two sisters, Eileen Petersilge and Nyla Steele.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the McFarland and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Sprague officiating. Interment will follow at Champion Township Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Imogene Deiwert, 84

CHARLESTOWN – Imogene Deiwert, 84, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009.

She was born April 11, 1925 in Burning Springs, W.Va. to Mack McKinley and Hazel (Martin) Menefee.

Imogene was a longtime Kent-Ravenna area resident and had worked for Goodyear and Ametek Lamb Electric. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ravenna, the Pleasant Valley Evangelical Church, American Legion Auxiliary in Elizabeth, W.Va., the Senior Women’s Bowling League and the Pleasant Timers.

Survivors include her husband, James Deiwert; daughters, Betty (Ted) Evans of Stow and Michelle R. Taylor of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Menefee of Oakridge, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Paul C. Taylor; and a daughter, Linda Sue Boyle.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the funeral home with the Reverend Scott Purdum officiating.

Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

John Patrick Leetch, 57

POLAND – Services  will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, celebrated by Father Edward P. Noga, for John Patrick Leetch, 57, who passed away Tuesday at his residence.

Mr. Leetch was born Nov. 14, 1951 in Youngstown, a son of Jack and JoAnn Collins Leetch and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a 1970 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School. 

John worked as a wire mill operator for Hynes Industries and as a self-employed painting contractor.

He was a member of Saint Patrick Church and the United Steelworkers Union Local No. 2377, having served as vice president and financial secretary.

John was a veteran of the Army serving from 1972 to 1978, and in Vietnam from 1972 to 1974.

Besides his parents, with whom he made his home, he leaves two sisters, Jayne (Harry) Kale of New Middletown and Carrie Leetch of Boardman; four brothers, David (Karen) Leetch of Canfield, Scott (Kim) Leetch of Youngstown, Robert (Stephanie) Leetch of St. Augustine, Fla. and Timothy (Susan) Leetch of Boardman; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Thomas A. Logan, 81

WALTERBORO, S.C. – Mr. Thomas A. Logan, 81, of Veterans Victory House, formerly of Masury and Hermitage, Pa., died July 4, 2009 after an extended illness.

Mr. Logan was born in Sharon, Pa. on Oct. 5, 1927, the son of the late Thomas F. and Marie (Pierson) Logan.

Tom was a graduate of Brookfield High School, and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the former Sharon Steel, where he worked as a open hearth furnace operator for 39 years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Sharon. Tom loved spending time at his cottage on Lake Erie in North Kingsville.

He was the widower of Alberta J. (Bitchko) Logan, whom he married on Oct. 11, 1947. She died July 29, 1997.

He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Logan and her husband, Ran Mateer of Chicago; his son, Leonard “Len” Logan and his wife, Marian of Summerville, S.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sister, Marge and her husband, John Bell of Mercer, Pa.

Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Constance Gutman; two sisters, Alice Davis and Lucille Mahoney; and three brothers, Charles, John and William Logan.

At his request, there will be no visitation.

A memorial Mass will be held at the church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon at noon on Friday, July 10, with the Rev. Henry C. Andrae and the Sacred Heart Church officiating.

Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hermitage.

Anna Marie Pennel Mainero, 83

WAKE FOREST, N.C. – Anna Marie Pennel Mainero, 83, formerly of San Clemente, Calif., passed away at UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C. on May 9, 2009.

She moved to Wake Forest in December of 2007 and began a wonderful new chapter of her life.

Anna Marie was born in Youngstown in 1926 and moved to San Clemente in 1960 with her husband, Mario Sr., who preceded her in death in 2003.

She leaves her daughter, Maryann of Wake Forest; her son and daughter-in-law, Mario Jr. and Denise of Corona del Mar, Calif.; her beloved grandchildren, Christina and Anthony, who lovingly refer to her as Grandma Elf; her sisters-in-law, Virginia Cuchessi, Norma Mainero and Antoinette Pennel; and many extended family members.

In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Mainero worked at various schools in the area in office administration. She had many creative talents, including her one-of-a-kind baking and cooking skills. She was well-known for her delicious and unique cookies, her cherry cheesecake, and her meatballs. She will be deeply missed.

Following the service in North Carolina on May 14, a rosary service was held on Friday, May 22, at 7 p.m. at the Lesneski Mortuary, 640 S. El Camino Real in San Clemente. A memorial Mass was held on Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. at the Our Lady of Fatima, 105 N. La Esperanza in San Clemente, where the Maineros were parishioners for many years.

Phyllis Ann Petri, 81

MIAMI, FLA. – Phyllis Ann Petri, 81, formerly of McDonald, passed away Monday, July 6, 2009, at Aventura Hospital in Aventura, Fla.

Phyllis was born Nov. 7, 1927 to the late Sam and Roxie Smith Rose in Youngstown.

She worked as a manicurist in Florida.

She is survived by her companion, Norbert Boisis of Miami; her sons, John (Gloria) Petri of Pembroke, Fla. and David Petri of Sarasota, Fla.; sister, Rose Marie Deak of Vienna; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Durkin.

Services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at Blackstone Funeral Home, where visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., prior to the service with procession to Girard City Cemetery.


Thomas Jay Shurtleff, 73

CUMMING, GA. – Thomas Jay Shurtleff passed away on May 9, in Cumming, after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 12, 1935 in Youngstown, the son of Harold and Thelma Ripley Shurtleff.

He is survived by companion, Gloria Brownlee; two sons, Thomas (Marty) Shurtleff of Woodstock, Ga. and James Shurtleff of Campbell; three grandchildren, Shaunda and James Thomas and Lyndsay Shurtleff of Woodstock; and a brother, James Ripley Shurtleff (Linda) Shurtleff of Canfield.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church on Glenwood Avenue in Boardman.


John Shushereba, 86

WARREN – John Shushereba, 86, a lifelong resident of Warren, passed away peacefully at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, after a long enduring struggle with illness.

John was born on June 27, 1923 in Lyndora, Pa, the son of Steve and Ava Herman Shushereba.

John enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Marksman, while specializing as an intelligence observer.

He left the U.S. on an expedition to the African-Middle-Eastern-Theater arriving on Sept. 23, 1943. On Aug. 4, 1944, John arrived back in the U.S. He received a Bronze Star in the Italian Campaign on Dec. 23, 1943. After his honorable discharge from the Army on Oct. 14, 1944, John pursued and completed his education receiving his Bachelor of Arts as well as his Master of Arts from Kent State University.

He was a hard worker all of his life. He had several jobs with a career in Psychology, including Woodside Receiving Hospital in Youngstown, Trumbull County Children’s Services, Arby’s International Corporation, a private practice with Terence Kavanagh, M.D. in Warren and a professor in Psychology at Youngstown State University.

John was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather and always offered his wisdom for those who sought it and shared his jokes just to watch others laugh.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Tura Shushereba, whom he endeared as “his love, his life.” He is also survived by a son, John and his wife Suzanne of Essex, Vt.; and a daughter, Debra and her husband, Tom Cafferty of Great Falls, Va. Finally, he is survived by his grandchildren, Shanna, John James III, Kara, Lauren and Stephanie.

Funeral services will be Friday July 10, 2009, at 11 a m. at the Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren, OH 44483 with Fr. Donald E. King officiating.

Calling hours will be Friday morning at the funeral home one hour prior to services.

Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Association-Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, 1815 W. Market St., Suite 301, Akron, OH 44313.

Vincentina “Vivi” Wardle, 66

LIBERTY – Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the New Life Christian Fellowship in Liberty Township for Mrs. Vincentina “Vivi” Wardle, 66, who died Tuesday morning, July 7, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.

She was born Sept. 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Andrew and Tessie Franzoza Mazza.

Vivi moved to the Youngstown area in 1954 and graduated from Girard High School in 1960. She worked for several years at Arbys’ Youngstown office and then at Jib Jab Hot Dog Shoppe in Girard.

Viv loved music, dancing and singing. She was a born-again Christian and her life was devoted to the Lord and her church family. Viv was a praise dancer at her church. She loved watching American Idol and attending the touring productions of American Idol. She also loved baking and won first prize in a contest for her famous brownies. But the most important thing in her life was her family; her husband, her siblings, her children, and her beloved grandchildren. Her life revolved around her family and spending as much time with them as possible.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Robert E. Wardle II, whom she married on June 29, 1979; a son, Robert (Lorraine) E. Wardle III of Youngstown; a daughter, Tracey Alice (Guy) D’Astolfo of Austintown; two sisters, Mickey (Anthony) DePietro of Canfield and Marie (Dennis) Roller of Liberty; a brother, Andrew (Marlene) Mazza of Youngstown; and four grandchildren, Lauren Pickstone, Maggie Rose Wardle and David and Allison Burrell; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Sean Pickstone.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard and a hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Interment will be at Churchill Cemetery in Liberty.

Leon A. Wielbruda, 79

BOARDMAN – Funeral services are Saturday, July 11, at 9 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown for Leon A. Wielbruda, 79, who died Tuesday evening at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Wielbruda was born Sept. 11, 1929 in Youngstown, a son a Stanley and Bessie Wojnarski Wielbruda.

Leon graduated from Wilson High School in 1948 and served with the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1950.

He was employed as a firefighter for the City of Youngstown Fire Department, attaining the rank of Captain, and retired in 1977 after 17 years of service.

He was a member of St. Matthias Church in Youngstown.

He is survived by his sons, Bill (Maureen) Wielbruda of Kirtland and Leo (Debbie) Wielbruda of Austintown; his daughter, Kathy Wielbruda at home; his sister, Victoria Kubala of Youngstown; and his four grandchildren, Jon, Kelsey, Brianna and Joey Wielbruda.

Besides his parents, Leon was preceded in death by his wife, the former Kay Balkan, whom he married Jan. 27, 1951, and who died Jan. 7, 2000; and his brother, Edward Wielbruda.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Interment will take place at Lake Park Cemetery.

Casper “Buck” Winphrie

YOUNGSTOWN – A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Casper “Buck” Winphrie will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Washington Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Wright officiating.

Mr. Winphrie peacefully departed this life July 5, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Health Center surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Winphrie was born Nov. 12, 1935 in Clinton, S.C., a son of Willie and Henrietta Cunningham Winphrie, coming to the valley many years ago.

He was a member of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was formerly employed as a mechanic for 15 years with Charlie’s Auto Service. His hobbies were fishing and barbecuing.

He leaves to cherish his memory, four daughters, Mashell Winphrie, Victoria and her husband, Julius Winprhrie-Joy, both of Youngstown, Tina Fletcher-Raines of Warren and Linda Turner of Clinton; two sons, Kenneth Winphrie of Youngstown and Vernon Cheeks of Clinton; three sisters, Ethel Mae James, Annie Pearl Sanders and Savannah Shelton, all of Clinton; two brothers, Charles Winphrie of Youngstown and Willie and his wife, Shirley Winphrie of Clinton; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
