Grace Ford Banning, 94

KINSMAN – Grace Ford Banning, 94, went home to be with the Lord on July 6, 2009, with her family by her side.

She was born on March 29, 1915 in Williamsfield, the daughter of Seymour B. and Sarah M. (Fee) Ford.

Mrs. Banning was a 1932 graduate of Williamsfield High School.

On June 18, 1935, she married Ward Earl Banning.

She was a lifelong member of the West Williamsfield First Congregational Church.

Mrs. Banning was a member of the Kinsman Chapter No. 433 Order of Eastern Star, the Williamsfield Grange No. 1654, where she served as the grange’s lecturer for over 20 years, a member of the Williamsfield M.A. Society, and the Williamsfield Mothers Club. She was a dynamic and active member of many community and social activities.

Mrs. Banning had a great love for music, enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting, baking, cooking, was a beautiful seamstress, did her own flower arranging and owned her own ceramic shop.

She demonstrated an unending love and tenderness for animals throughout her life.

Mrs. Banning was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Ward Earl Banning; two sisters, Beth Davidson and Eleanore Rowland; and a son-in-law, Edward John Hnida.

Survivors include three daughters, Beth E. Hnida of Williamsfield, Jane E. (Donald) Lucarell and Mary Anne Banning, both of Kinsman; a grandson, John E. Hnida of Williamsfield; a granddaughter, Natalie E. (Rob) McIntosh of Middletown; a great-granddaughter, Hannah E. Hnida; and two grandsons, Erik I. Hnida and Kellen E. McIntosh; two nieces, Anne (John) Rowland Pereira and Lois Coryea; a son-in-law, Robert (Edwina) Payne of Andover; and a devoted friend and caregiver, Dianne (Verne) Campbell.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Baumgardner Funeral Home, 8569 Main St. in Kinsman, with Pastor Oscar Grant officiating.

Calling hours will be on Saturday from noon until the time of services. Burial will follow at West Williamsfield Cemetary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Welfare League Shelter, 545 Brunstetter Road in Warren.

Richard E. Benton

SAGAMORE HILLS – Richard E. Benton, beloved husband of Theresa L (Flynn); loving father of Michael, Mark (Tracy), Dan (Denise), Linda Schoeller (Louis) and Rick (Leigh); devoted grandfather of Michael (Beth), Nicholas, Madeline, Olivia, Nicole (Chris), Matthew, Alyssa, Jeffrey and Ryan; dearest great-grandfather of Dylan and Jackson; and dear brother of Dorothy, Thomas and the late James.

John M. “Jack” Bracken, 84

COLUMBIANA – John M. “Jack” Bracken, 84, passed away Wednesday evening at the Hospice House in Poland of complications.

Mr. Bracken was born April 16, 1925 in Johnstown, Pa., a son of Twinam and Sylvia Mardis Bracken and the 7th of 15 children. 

After attending school in Johnstown, Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1946, he married his wife of 63 years, Sophie Pasternak Bracken, who preceded him in death July, 4, 2009.

Jack was employed by the F.J. Egner Trucking Company, Coastal Tank Lines and R & R Mack Company in New Castle, Pa. before retiring in 2002. He was a Methodist by faith and was very proud of his family.

He is survived by two daughters, Darlene Orincsak (the late John Orincsak) and Jeanne Raneri (Joseph Raneri), both of Columbiana; a sister, Dolly (Abe) Coury of Indiana, Pa.; and a brother, Edwin (Joyce) Bracken of Fort Myers, Fla. Jack had three grandchildren, Jacqueline (Jackie) Orincsak (her fiancé, Roy Munn) of Willoughby, Lori Kerchofer (Michael) of Greer, S.C., and the late Christopher Orincsak. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Erin, Isaac and Justin Hendershot (Jackie’s children) and Jonathan, Cole, and Sophia Kerchofer (Lori’s children).

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Viola (Sis), Twinam (Pete), Willard, William, Clarence (Jim), Madge, Hazel, Audrey (Boots), Perry (Pud), Eugene, Raymond and Sara (Ica).

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana with Deacon Lou Cosentino officiating. 

Burial will follow at Columbiana Cemetery where Honor Guards from Benjamin Firestone Post No. 290 American Legion will accord military honors.

Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home in Columbiana.

Mae M. Duke, 80

AUSTINTOWN – There are no funeral services or calling hours for Mae M. Duke, 80, who passed away Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman.

Mae was born May 22, 1929 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Morgan T. and Marie (Pavelko) Wile.

A homemaker, Mae was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, and an avid Green Bay Packers Fan.

Her husband, Charles Elmer Duke Sr., whom she married in 1948, passed away April 27, 1974.

Mae is survived by four children, Carolyn M. Duke of Mineral Ridge, Kathleen L. Bonacker of Struthers, Charles E. (Marsha) Duke Jr. of North Lima and Clifford E. (Sally) Duke of Boardman; three sisters, Ruth Woodall of Austintown, Sarah Wertz of Austintown and Martha Girard of Florida; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by a brother, Morgan Wile; a sister, Elizabeth Wyant; a granddaughter, Melanie A. Bonacker; and a daughter-in-law, Laura Duke.

Joseph “Breez” Fabian, 59

STRUTHERS – There will be a funeral service held on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at noon at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Thomas Joseph “Breez” Fabian, 59, who passed away on July 8, 2009 at Hospice House after a seven month battle with cancer.

Tom will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born June 5, 1950 in Youngstown, the only child of Joseph Thomas and Christine (Vilcheck) Fabian.

Tom worked as a laborer for various companies including Republic Steel in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and most recently for General Extrusions in Boardman for the past 16 years.

He enjoyed running, fishing, swimming, and coached baseball and softball several summer seasons for the Struthers Baseball League. Tom was an enormous and lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

His overall focus in life was to be a good son, friend, and loving husband and dad. Much of his leisure time was spent taking care of his two children, clocking numerous hours swimming, playing various sports, fishing, and later in his life he enjoyed the concert scene with them. Each summer he looked forward to quiet weekends with his wife at Conneaut and Geneva on the Lake. Overall, Tom loved to be with his friends and family enjoying good food, drink, and laughs.

He leaves behind to hold on to his memory his wife of over 33 years, the former Monica Janecko, whom he married Oct. 5, 1976; a son, Joseph Michael Fabian; a daughter, Melissa Fabian-Burris; and a son-in-law, Brooks Burris.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 9:30 to 11:55 a.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

We would like to thank our family and friends for the love and support they showed over the last seven months. Much gratitude to all those who contributed and participated in his benefit dinner held for Tom in March. A deeply sincere “Thank You” to those who made daily visits and for all the assistance provided in our home the last few months. Raymond Griffin, 60

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Calvary Ministries International for Mr. Raymond Griffin, 60, who entered eternal life with Christ on Wednesday, July 8, 2009.

Mr. Griffin was born June 20, 1949 in Youngstown, a son of Roy and Helen E. Jackson Griffin.

He was a 1968 graduate of South High School, where he excelled in sports. He also attended Panhandle University in Oklahoma and was a graduate of Youngstown State University. He had worked at Delphi Packard Electric, the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office for several years as an investigator, and the Mahoning County Juvenile Court as a hearing officer.

As an entrepreneur, Ray owned and operated Black Belt Security Company and Phase I Lounge. Ray, also known as “Griff,” followed his intercollegiate career for a period of time playing professional football with the Detroit Lions and semi-professional football with the Youngstown Hardhats. After years of playing football, he coached for North High School, The Rayen School and several other football teams. He formerly served as league commissioner for the Volney Rogers Youth Football League. He also served as a mentor, coach and friend to many others in football, basketball and track. He was also a former precinct committee person for the Democratic Party

He was a member of the Calvary Ministries International, where he served in the Security Ministry during P I P (Pentecost In Prospective). He was a former member of the New Bethel Baptist Church, where he helped to organize The Brotherhood.

Besides his mother, Helen E. Griffin-Porter, he leaves to cherish his loving memory, his devoted wife, the former Marva Poindexter; three sons, Blaine (Jeanette) Griffin of Cleveland, George (Sheila) Wesson of Columbiana and KeMonte Wesson of Phoenix; three daughters, Eliaha Blakely of Hampton, Va., Rhonda Poindexter and Christina Wesson, both of Youngstown; five sisters, Sharmette Griffin-Austin of Youngstown, Denise (Charles) Wallace of Austintown, Shawn Cotton of Buffalo, N.Y., Elizabeth Gibson of Toledo and Renee Neal of Illinois; two brothers, Kevin L. Porter of Youngstown and Raymond Shavers of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and a host of family and friends, including a cousin he was reared with, Richard Jackson of Youngstown .

He was preceded in death by his father; and a cousin he was reared with, Sheryl Stroud.

Edwin Halfhill, 81

YOUNGSTOWN – Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman for Edwin Halfhill, 81, who passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Mr. Halfhill was born Feb. 16, 1928 in Connellsville, Pa., a son of Roy and Rose Zimmerman Halfhill, and he had been a resident of the Youngstown area since 1959.

He retired as a machine operator with International Harvester, where he was a union official. Edwin was a lifetime member of the VFW, Fraternal Order of Eagles and was an Army veteran of World War II. Ed enjoyed woodworking, hunting and gardening.

His wife, the former Veronica Berrish, whom he married Aug. 5, 1951, died in March of 1989.

He leaves two daughters, Deb (Ron) Toman of Youngstown and Pam (Rich) Liposky of Hubbard; a son, Brian (Caroline) Halfhill of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Liposky, Tiffany Toman, Nicholas Halfhill, Bryanne Halfhill and Jillian Halfhill; and his longtime partner, Jerry Thompson. She and Edwin  shared their lives together for the past 13 years.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Halfhill and Howard Halfhill and a sister, Marie Sharrick.

Shelton E. Harris, 57

YOUNGSTOWN – A funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Shelton E. Harris, 57, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Washington Funeral Home.

Mr. Harris was born April 23, 1952 in Youngstown, a son of Richard and Odessa Paige Harris.

He was a handyman, whose hobbies included watching professional wrestling and communicating on the CB radio. His call name was “grass hopper.” Mr. Harris was well known for helping people around the neighborhood and was loved by all. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him.

On July 6, 2009 “our heavenly father cast his eternal light and beckoned him home.”

He leaves to cherish his memory his two loving sisters, Elaine D. Harris and Valencia (her husband, Brian) Marrow both of Youngstown; two brothers, Richard H. Harris Jr. of Cleveland and Michael D. (his wife, Renee) Harris of Mesa, Ariz.; six nieces; eight nephews; and host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul S. Harris; maternal grandparents, Ollie and Beatrice Paige; and paternal grandparents, Henry and Agnes Harris.

Friends may call today from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home and the family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

The family will also receive friends at the home of his sisters, Valencia Marrow at 617 Parkcliff and Elaine Harris at 2813 Utilis Ave., both in Youngstown.

Wanda L. Brown Jackson, 45

NORFOLK, VA. – Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tod Homestead Cemetery for Mrs. Wanda L. Brown Jackson, 45, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life Friday, July 3, 2009, at Sentera Leigh Hospital in Norfolk.

Mrs. Jackson was born Aug. 19, 1963 in Youngstown, a daughter of Theodore A. Sr. and Annie Averhart Brown.

She was an Assistant Director at Southwestern Tidewater Opportunity Program and was a former member of the New Bethel Baptist Church.

She graduated from Ursuline High School, attended Kent State and Youngstown State University, and graduated from Tidewater Community College with an associate degree in Early Childhood Development.

She leaves her mother and stepfather, Annie Brown and Robert Fryson of Youngstown; her children, Elijhwan and Emmanuel Jackson, Benjamin Cobb II and Akeam Morris, all of Norfolk; a brother, Theodore A. Brown Jr.; two stepsisters, Denise Fryson and Alicia Anderson, all of Youngstown; a stepbrother, Greg (Lynn) Fryson of Sharon, Pa.; her companion, Raymond Morris of Norfolk; and other relatives and friends.

Tawanda Denise Mixon Kennedy, 42

YOUNGSTOWN – Mrs. Tawanda Denise Mixon Kennedy, 42, passed away at St. Elizabeth Health Center on July 5, 2009.

“T-Wee,” as she was affectionately called, having earned the nickname because she was the shortest of her siblings, was born in Youngstown on July 19, 1966, a daughter of Fred and Annie Mixon Davis. She was a 1984 graduate of East High School and was a member of the “Juicy Fruit” Club.

She leaves to cherish her memory her parents; her children, Trey Kennedy of Columbia, Mo. and Mia, Alexandria and Taylor Kennedy, all of Youngstown; her brother, Anthony Mixon of Bradford, Pa.; her sisters, Mary Doakes of El Paso, Texas and Michelle Mixon of Youngstown; and her two grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Leonard Kennedy III, she was also preceded in death by her grandparents, J D and Mary Mixon; and a nephew, Darius Mixon.

Services will be on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Howard-Rhoden Memorial Home, where friends may call one hours prior to the services.

Ida Lois Kilgore, 83

LOWELLVILLE - Ida Lois Kilgore, 83, died Thursday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman, with her family at her side.

Mrs. Kilgore was born Feb. 28, 1926 in Youngstown, a daughter of Clint and Luona Sutphin Jones.

She was a 1944 graduate of Poland Seminary High School, and a member of the Hillsville Methodist Church. During World War II, she worked for General Electric as a stem maker. Following the war, she was a homemaker, then worked for American Paper Products, retiring in 1984 after 20 years.

She loved to spend time with her two children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to read and to do crossword puzzles. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters, and her lifelong friend, Mary Dunchak.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Chester Kilgore, whom she married March 20, 1948; one son, Tim (Terri) Kilgore of Lordstown; one daughter, Debbie Smith of Springfield; six grandchildren, Todd (Barbara) Kilgore of Gaithersburg, Md., Matthew (Karie) Kilgore of Towson, Md., Brian Smith of Springfield, Jodi (Aaron) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., Stacie Kilgore of Lordstown and Trace Kilgore of Lordstown; five great-grandchildren, Michael Kilgore, Karisa Kilgore, Phaedra Smith, Tristan Smith and Dagny Smith ; one brother, Glenn (Cathy) Jones of Columbus; three sisters, Mary Phenicie of Edinburg, Barbara (Vincent) Mariotte of Lowellville and Beatrice (Cliff) Householder of Homosassa, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Anita Jones of Boardman and Beej Jones of North Lima. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Clint Jones, Donald Jones and Charles Jones and two sisters, Margaret Gliemmo and Geraldine Flesch.

Services will be held at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Crum, officiating.

Friends will be received Sunday from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Terrie L. Dugan Marinelli, 45

NEW CASTLE, PA. – Prayers will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Charles Church for Terrie L. Dugan Marinelli, 45, who passed away Wednesday evening at Saint Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown after a five year extended illness.

Mrs. Marinelli was born March 7, 1964 in Youngstown, a daughter of William A. and Barbara Green Dugan and had been a resident of New Castle for the past 26 years.

She was a 1982 graduate of Boardman High School and a member of Saint Charles Church.

Besides her husband, Robert Marinelli, whom she married June 4, 1983 and her parents of Boardman, she leaves two daughters, Nichole and Daniele and a son, Brandon, all at home; a brother, Ronald W. (Vickie) Dugan of Boardman; her mother-in-law, Loretta Ross of New Castle; her father-in-law, Joseph Marinelli of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, William J. Dugan.

Emil J. (Mixy) McKula, 81

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Emil J. (Mixy) McKula, 81, who passed away early Wednesday morning.

He was born April 28,1928, a son of the late Emil and Mary (Baluch) McKula.

Emil was a graduate of Chaney High School.

He was a steel worker at J & L in Niles for 18 years and also worked for the Youngstown Vindicator filling newspaper boxes.

Emil was in the U.S. Marines serving in the Korean War as a Rifle Marksman.

He was a member at St. Christine Church, Infant Jesus Prague, VFW Lt. Charles W. Brown Jr. Post, and Jednota Branch No. 308.

Emil enjoyed golf, bowling and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Cleveland Browns fan and also the Indians.

He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Kozak, whom he married Sept. 5,1949; one son, Bill (Lisa) McKula of Austintown; one brother, Eugene (Rose) McKula of Youngstown; one sister, Dorothy (Robert) Nemcik of Austintown; two grandchildren, Billy and Alyssa McKula of Austintown; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Lee Kripko and Beverly Kozak.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Joseph.

Doris June Montgomery, 75

STRUTHERS – Doris June Montgomery, 75, died early Tuesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center of a massive stroke after sustaining injuries in an automobile accident on June 25.

June was born March 2, 1934 in Andrews, N.C., a daughter of Willard and Hopey Hoxworth Earwood.

She was a 1951 graduate of Struthers High School and worked as a clerk for the Driver License Exam Board for over 25 years.

June was a member of the Baptist Bible Church in Ravenna, and loved sewing and gardening.

Her husband, Charles Astor Montgomery, whom she married March 17, 1952, died June 25 of this year.

She leaves three sons, C. Michael (Robin) Montgomery of Poland, Daniel (Tina Sainito) Montgomery of Struthers and Bryan (Mary) Montgomery of Petersburg; two brothers, Ken Earwood of New Middletown and Charles Earwood of Texas; and four grandchildren, Brittany, Danny, Bryan and Sarah Montgomery.

Besides her parents and husband, June was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Melozzi.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Pastor Vince Hardy officiating.

Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

Friends will be received Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

William Harold “Bill” Sawtelle, 81

HARTFORD – William Harold “Bill” Sawtelle, 81, passed away Wednesday at 9:15 p.m. July 8, 2009 at Briarfield at the Ridge.

Bill was born on Aug. 8, 1927 in Coalport, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Ella (Wise) Sawtelle.

Bill served in the armed forces during World War II. He moved to the area in 1954, where he worked as a truck driver for Van Huffel Tube, retiring in 1989 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and was mechanically inclined.

Bill married his wife, the former Betty McConnell on Nov. 26, 1948. Together they shared 53 years of marriage. Betty preceded Bill in death on June 26, 2004.

He is survived by his three sons, William J. (Karen) Sawtelle of Brookfield, Dennis C Sawtelle of Cookeville, Tenn. and Randy Sawtelle of Niles; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo Sawtelle of Newton Falls; and a sister, Pearl Jones of Gypsy, Pa.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife Betty; and a son, Robert Sawtelle.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Samuel F. Wagner Sr., 77

BOARDMAN – Samuel F. Wagner, 77, formerly of Monroeville, Pa., beloved husband of 57 years to Marjorie Wagner; loving father of Harvey (Linda) Wagner of North Canton, Samuel F. (Brenda) Wagner Jr. of Monroeville, Rick (Sue) Wagner of Woodbury, Pa. and Robert Wagner of Manns Choice, Pa.; brother of George Wagner of Michigan, Nancy Gates of North Versailles, Pa. and Sonja Balkovic of North Braddock, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Sam was a retired salesman and was currently an active member of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church in Canfield, and a longtime active member of AA.
