Harvey E. Streich, 92

PHOENIX, ARIZ. – Harvey E. Streich, 92, beloved husband of 58 years of Hilda Flaherty Streich; father of Susan Streich, Dennis Streich and Daniel Streich; honorary father of John J. Dawson; and grandfather of nine, passed away peacefully in his Phoenix home on July 14, 2009. Family members were at his side at the time of death. He had been in frail physical health for the past several years from causes related to his advanced age.

Harvey was preceded in death by his wife and by his sister, Audrey Streich.

He is survived by his brother, Eugene Streich, also of the Phoenix area, in addition to his children and grandchildren.

A native of Wisconsin, Harvey Streich passed through the Phoenix area in December of 1942, during his service with the Army Air Corps in World War II. Like many other servicemen from the Midwest who were experiencing the Valley of the Sun for the first time, he quickly decided that Phoenix weather in December was much to be preferred over the Wisconsin winters. First however, he had to survive the war, which included combat service as a B-17 bombardier and being shot down in the vicinity of Vienna, Austria, followed by an 11-month stay in Stalag Luft I until the POW camp was liberated by the Soviets advancing from the east.

Following the war, he moved his mother, Ida and sister, Audrey from Wisconsin to the Phoenix area, and thereafter commenced his undergraduate education at Arizona State University. Graduating with a degree in accounting, he worked temporarily in a bank position, during which time he met and married Hilda Flaherty, herself a relocated Midwesterner (Ohio). The young couple then moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., where Harvey graduated from law school at the University of Michigan.

Returning to the Phoenix area after law school, Harvey began what was to be a long and distinguished legal career when he joined the law firm of Kramer Roche. Hilda started her career as homemaker and devoted wife, and soon thereafter Susan, Dennis and Dan arrived on the scene.

In 1970, Harvey was one of the founding partners of the law firm of Streich, Lang, Weeks, Cardon & French, later to become simply Streich Lang, PA. During his active career with Streich Lang, Harvey was a visionary chairman and managing partner. Streich Lang grew to become one of the largest law firms in the state of Arizona, with business, corporate, bankruptcy, real estate and litigation practices that spanned the Southwest and served clients throughout the United States.

In 2000, Streich Lang merged with the law firm of Quarles & Brady, LLP, whose roots were in Harvey’s native Wisconsin. The merger formed a national law firm, initially called Quarles & Brady, Streich Lang, LLP, in the southwest and now known nationwide as Quarles & Brady, LLP. Harvey is recognized and honored as one of the founders of the national firm.

In the later years of his career, Harvey devoted himself to many worthy charitable causes, including service as chairman of the United Way in Arizona. He also served on the Council for Corporate Growth and on the Arizona Association for Economic Development, which was instrumental in bringing clean industry and other corporate businesses to Arizona.

Dutiful, honorable, humble, uncomplaining, dedicated to his work and his family, driven to succeed in every endeavor he undertook, Harvey Streich epitomized the qualities and character of the “Greatest Generation.” His family and friends consider themselves blessed to have known him and to be part of his life. He will be missed, but his life’s example and the lessons he imparted to succeeding generations of people whom he loved, befriended and mentored will be his enduring legacy. “Do your best” was his credo, and he never did anything less.

Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial have taken place in Phoenix.

Interment will be next to his beloved wife in the Flaherty family gravesite at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown. A graveside service will be held at Calvary on Thursday, July 23, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski, pastor of St. Stephen Church in Niles, officiating.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent in his name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Holloway-Williams Funeral Home, 611 Robbins Ave. in Niles, 330-652-2422.

Condolences can be emailed to hollowaywilliamsfh@sbcglobal.net.
