John “Jack” Vicarel, 79

STRUTHERS – John “Jack” Vicarel, 79, of 253 Wilson Street, died suddenly Monday afternoon at his residence.

Mr. Vicarel was born Feb. 9, 1930 in Youngstown, and later moved to Struthers.

He wrote his own obituary, which follows: “It’s my life, so it’s only fitting that I have the last word. I was the youngest of 12 born to Dominic and Angeline DeMain Vicarel. In a family of that size there was never a cold seat in the bathroom. I was called Jack, but for a good while, I thought my name was “somebody”. How many times I heard, “Somebody go to the store”. As the youngest, it seemed I always had to go.

I graduated from East High School and had two years of Life Underwriting Council training. I worked 20 years with Metropolitan Life followed by 10 years with the City of Struthers at the Waste Water Treatment Plant. For the past 12 years, I have worked for Transit Service.

I am a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church and it’s Holy Name Society. I am a life member of Struthers Knights of Columbus 4224. I was a longtime member of the Struthers Gridiron Club and a member of the former Amerital Club.

My interests, besides spreading some good humor, were cooking, canning and casinos. When I was able to golf, I had the good fortune of two holes in one.

I was married to Frances “Fritzie” Adamczyk on Feb. 21, 1949. Because of her, I am convinced not all angels have wings.

I was preceded in finality by my parents; my brothers, Dan, Angelo, Ralph, Sam, Joe, Pat and Lou; and sisters, Antoinette “Dawn” Mezzaros and Mary Orosz.

In addition to my wife, I leave sons, Monte (Carol) of Struthers and Jack (Gina) of Lowellville; a very special daughter, Kathy (Ken) Evans of Boardman; a sister, Doris (Jerry) Luepnitz of St. Ignace, Mich.; a brother, Fred (Rita) Vicarel of Boardman; nine grandchildren, Anne (Jerry) Scavnicky, Monica and Gina Vicarel, Jacklyn Evans, Chelsea, Brooke, and Jordan Marrie and Katie and Julie Duffey; a great-grandson, Michael Ryan Scavnicky; many nieces and nephews; and last but not least, my brother-in-law and good friend, Frank Bochenek, who along with brother, Fred, watched over me like a mother hen wherever we would go. This group gave me enough love and attention for two lifetimes. I also leave two special family friends, Charlene and Mary, that honored me as their other dad. So, I’ll sign off now. Don’t forget to fasten your seat belt and remember the best is yet to come.”
