Virginia M. Ambrosio, 97

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church for Mrs. Virginia M. Ambrosio, 97, of Heritage Manor, 517 Gypsy Lane, who died July 22, 2009.

Virginia was born April 28, 1912, a daughter of Stephen and Theresa Altomond Palmer.

Her husband, James, whom she married Jan. 9, 1934, died May 10, 1983.

Virginia was a lifelong homemaker and seamstres. She also worked at the Ohio Leather Company and the G.M. McKelvey Co. She was the caregiver for several members of her family and helped raise her three grandchildren.

She leaves one son, Stephen Ambrosio of Girard and three grandchildren, James of Columbus and Gina and Stephen of Girard.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mrs. Ann Gallucci, Mr. Anthony Palmer, Mrs. Grace Acierno, Mrs. Mary Colapietro and Mrs. Kathryn Montella; and a nephew, Stephen V. Gallucci, whom she raised as her own, and who died in 1944.

The family would like to extend their great appreciation to the entire staff at Heritage Manor for their excellent care and for making her last year so fulfilling and enjoyable.

Calling hours will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at the Schiavone Funeral Home.

Dorothy M. Beye, 89

BOARDMAN – There will be a memorial Mass at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Saint Charles Church, celebrated by Father Shawn Conoboy, for Dorothy M. Beye, 89, who passed away Wednesday morning at Shepherd of the Valley.

Mrs. Beye was born Oct. 18, 1919 in Youngstown, the daughter of John and Anna Yeager Dobbs and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1937 graduate of South High School and co-owned and operated Southdale Sales and Services with her husband.

Dorothy was a member of Saint Charles Church. She enjoyed bingo, boating, playing pinochle, cooking, gardening and her wintering in Florida.

Her family was her number one priority and everyone loved Thursday night spaghetti dinners.

Besides her loving husband, Howard F. Beye, whom she married June 28, 1941, she leaves three daughters, Karen Bates of Youngstown, Barbara (Conrad) Foss of Tampa, Fla. and Valerie (David) Urmetz of Monroe, Ga.; six grandchildren, Audra Bates, David Foss, Mike Foss, Jeff Foss, Amy Scott and David Urmetz Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Dobbs.

Friends may call from 8 to 9 a.m. at the church on Saturday.

John W. “Jack” Campbell

McDONALD – Memorial services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Boardman for John W. “Jack” Campbell, formerly of Boardman. He passed away at his home July 17, 2009.

Mr. Campbell was born March 17, 1921 in Youngstown, a son of Ralph and Lillian Sarver Campbell.

He graduated from South High School in 1939. He was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army Air Corp, having spent two years in India and Burma.

Jack was the co-owner of Campbells Seafood in downtown Youngstown for over 30 years, and a former member of the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church.

His wife, the former Doris May McCready, whom he married Jan. 6, 1946, died June 8, 1987.

Surviving him is a daughter, Janet (Allen) Stokes of McDonald; two granddaughters, Dianna DeMarco and Jennifer Stokes; three great-grandsons; also his brother, Ralph Campbell of North Carolina.

Preceding him in death besides his wife and parents, is a brother, Robert; and a sister, Jane Atwood.

Arrangements are being handled by the Davis Funeral Home in Boardman.


James Bert Harris, 78

PARIS TOWNSHIP – James Bert Harris, 78, passed away peacefully at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Kent Healthcare Center of natural causes.

He was born Oct. 23, 1930 in Warsaw, the son of the late Clarence Wesley and Hazel Leona (Sowers) Harris.

James graduated from Paris High School in 1948.

He married Mary L. (Gordon) Richards on Dec. 13, 1998 and she survives.

He had lived in Lake Milton for eight years, formerly of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he was a Librarian for Broward County Library for 20 years before retiring in 1996. He also worked at Singer Sewing Machine for a number of years. He attended the Wayland Community Church.

James enjoyed lifting weights, traveling, exercising, going to flea markets, bicycle riding and was an avid Bible reader. He also liked to play cards, board games and shooting pool.

Memories of James will be carried on by his loving family, his wife Mary; his daughters and sons-in-law, Norene and Eddie Timmons of Peyton, Colo. and Yvonne and Darryl Newman of Fate, Texas; his stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Sherie and Bernie Huth, Anita and Mike Stone and Renee and Brian Porter, all of Paris Township; his son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Mary Harris of Sunnyvale, Calif.; his son Timothy Harris of San Jose, Calif.; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Alan and Pam Richards of Long Beach, Calif.; his sisters, Mary Peshek of Austintown and Kathy Hawkins of Stow; his aunt, Maxine Corder of Ohio; nine grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark Harris; and one sister, Bernice Roberts.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Wayland Community Church at a later date and time.

Burial will be at Hawley Cemetery in Paris Township.

Elizabeth A. “Liz” Mackey, 74

VIENNA - Elizabeth A. “Liz” Mackey, 74, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Liberty Health Care Center with her family by her side.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents, John W. and Anna (Kovach) Snitzer Sr; and three brothers, John W. Snitzer Jr., Carl F. Snitzer and Edward S. Snitzer.

Family will receive friends today, July 24, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Madasz Chapel, 6923 Warren-Sharon Road in Brookfield.

A funeral service will take place Saturday, July 25, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Ruth I. Roth, pastor of Vienna United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Vienna Township Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the building fund of the church.

Margaret Pallai, 98

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home for Margaret Pallai, 98, who passed away Wednesday morning at Omni Manor Nursing Home.

Margaret was born March 27, 1911 in Gonczruska, Hungary, a daughter of Ignatz and Piroska Fuzy Veres. She came to America and Youngstown as a two year old child.

She was a homemaker, who married Alexander Pallai on Jan. 9, 1929, and he passed away Sept. 6, 1976.

Margaret was a member of the Rockview Christian Church, formerly the American Hungarian Reformed Church, the Yolanda Ladies Group of the church and the Hungarian Senior Citizens.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret (Bill) Artz of Youngstown; two sons, Eugene W. (Nadine) Pallai of Richland, Mo. and James George (Kathleen) Pallai of Youngstown; a sister, Jennie Vargo of Youngstown; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret was preceded in death by a son, Alexander Jr.; two brothers, James and Steve Veres; three sisters, Julia Toth, Helen Katoch and Irene Veres; and a great-granddaughter.

Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.


Carl E. Sager, 87

COLUMBIANA – Carl E. Sager, 87, went to live with the Lord on July 22, 2009, with his family by his side.

He began his life’s journey on Oct. 14, 1921 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Charles and Wilhemina (Pape) Sager.

He graduated from Shenango High School in 1939 and was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps. He was employed in the railroad industry for his entire working career with the Pennsylvania & Lake Erie Railroad, Penn Central and the Association of American Railroads.

In his retirement years, he was an active member of the Northeastern Ohio Forestry Association and loved to work with wood. He lived the life of a country gentleman and enjoyed the companionship of family, friends and his dogs.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Ruth (Padmore) Sager; a brother, Robert Sager; and a sister, Wilma Sager.

Carl is survived by his sister, Catherine Stroud; his two children by a previous marriage, Pamela (Michael) Loch of Medina and David (Sharon) Sager of Doylestown, Pa. He was very proud of his three grandchildren, Kristin (Steve) Schulte, Matthew Sager and Stephanie Loch.

Carl’s life will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Mr. Jeff Hugus officiating.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, where the American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post No. 290 of Columbiana will conduct a military honors service.

Atty. Eugene R. Smith, 87

“Together Forever”

NORTH LIMA – Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at the Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market St. in Boardman for Atty. Eugene R. Smith, who died Wednesday evening at Hospice House of Poland.

Atty. Smith was born May 18, 1922 in Youngstown, a son of the late Lloyd C. and Rachel James Smith.

He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, and was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II.

He attended Ohio State University and graduated from Youngstown College with a bachelor’s degree. Atty. Smith practiced law for over 50 years. He received his Juris Doctorate Degree in 1954 from Youngstown College and was admitted to the Ohio Supreme Court in 1956 and to the United States Supreme Court in 1960. He was a member of the Mahoning, Columbiana, Ohio State and American Bar Associations, Ohio and American Trial Lawyers Associations, the Ohio Criminal Defense Attorneys, the North Lima Ruritan Club and the Boardman Rotary Club. He attended the Old North Church.

Atty. Smith leaves three daughters, Rachel (Joseph) Parlink of Boardman, Atty. Rebecca (Ron) Albers of Columbus and Judge Beth Smith (Tom Compton) of North Lima; five grandchildren, Joely (Alan) Johnson, Dr. Alison (Joseph) Protain, Michael Albers, Oliver (Danielle) Albers and Mackenzie Compton; and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Johnson, Sarah Johnson and Josie Grace Protain.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jeanne M. Struble, whom he married June 2, 1947, and who died Nov. 19, 2008.

Friends may call for two hours prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Joseph X. Vukovich, 88

LINCOLN, CALIF. – Services were held July 13, at the Rose Memorial Funeral Home in Simi Valley, Calif., for Joseph X. Vukovich, 88, formerly of Hubbard, who died July 3.

Mr. Vukovich was a decorated World War II veteran, who served with the 10th Armored Division and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was an avid golfer, who was known as “J.X.” to all who knew him.

He was born Nov. 11, 1920 in Hubbard, a son of John and Mary Vukovich, and lived in Hubbard until he moved to California with his wife in 1990.

He worked for the Operating Engineers Local No. 66.

He was a former member of St. Patrick’s Church in Hubbard, and served as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, as well as an usher at Mass. He also participated in many fund raising activities for St. Patrick’s as well as his community.

His wife, Josephine, whom he was married to for 53 years, passed away in 2000.

He leaves two daughters, Joyce (Jack) Bowland and Mary Jane (Ron) Corpuz, both of California; three sisters, Kathryn Kender, Helen Cilas and Carolyn Posterli; a brother, John Vukovich; five grandchildren, Jaclyn, Jody, Jessica, Chloe and Alison; and two great-grandchildren, Lilah and Carter.

Two brothers, Peter Vukovich and Thomas Vukovich; and two sisters, Anna Garano and Barbara Kassan are deceased.

Eugene Woloshyn, 92

STOW – Eugene Woloshyn, 92, died on Wednesday, July 22, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Woloshyn and Richard Stahl.

Mr. Woloshyn had been living at Emeritus at Stow Assisting Living Facility, since the death of his beloved wife, Estelle on May 2, 2008. Mr. Woloshyn passed away on the morning of their 59th wedding anniversary.

Born April 1, 1917 in Arnold, Pa., Mr. Woloshyn was the son of Mary and Wasyl Woloshyn.

He graduated from Arnold High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., class of 1939. Mr. Woloshyn was the Farrell City Singles Tennis Champion and was a standout on the Thiel College tennis and golf teams, as well.

Mr. Woloshyn worked at Carnegie-Illinois in Farrell, Pa., after graduating from college. A year later, he transferred to the Youngstown District of the U.S. Steel Corporation’s Metallurgical Department, where he spent the remaining 40 years of his career.

He was a member and secretary-treasurer of the American Society of Metals and was chairman of the American Institute of Metallurgical Engineers Penn-Ohio Chapter.

Mr. Woloshyn was a special agent in the U.S. Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps, serving in occupied Germany. At one point, he was a member of Gen. Eisenhower’s security detail.

On July 22, 1950, Mr. Woloshyn married his wife, Estelle and they raised their family in Poland.

Over the years, Mr. Woloshyn was an active volunteer, he was the past president of the Wilson High School Boosters Club in Youngstown. He was also active in the local and national Ukrainian communities, serving as president of the Ukrainian Youth League of North America, the Ukrainian Professional Society of North America, president of the Ukrainian Heritage Foundation of North America and president of the Ukrainian National Association of Seniors. Mr. Woloshyn also served on the Thiel College Alumni Board.

Mr. Woloshyn was an avid golfer and served as president of the Mill Creek Seniors Golf League.

He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and Notre Dame football, but there was nothing more important to him than his family. In his later years, he wrote a book about his life called “That’s the Way It Was.”

Mr. Woloshyn was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy Zayac of Parma and Florence Wallace of Silver Springs, Md.; his wife, Estelle; and his beloved daughter-in-law, Karen Woloshyn.

He is survived by his daughters, Elaine Woloshyn and her husband, Richard Stahl of Stow and Evonne Woloshyn of Rockford, Ill.; his son, Gene Woloshyn; and his cherished two grandsons, Andrew and Alex, all of Lake Forest, Ill.; as well as his sister, Julie Mullally, and her children, Robert Mullally, James Mullally and Joyce Buzzacco and their families in Youngstown and the state of Indiana. Also surviving are his in-laws, Nick and Mary Bobeczko of Stow and Taras and Midge Szmagala of Brecksville; and his nephew, Taras Szmagala and his wife, Helen Jarem and son, Gregory of Chagrin Falls.

Calling hours will be held today, July 24, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Kolodiy-Lazuta Funeral Home, 5677 State Road in Parma.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at St. Andrew Ukrainian Catholic Church, 7700 Hoertz Road in Parma.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be considered to the Eugene Woloshyn Scholarship Fund, c/o the Development Office, Thiel College, Greenville, PA 16125.
