William Battin, 63

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – William Battin, 63, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Battin was born July 12, 1946 to the late William and Geraldine Holmes Battin in Youngstown.

He was self-employed as a truck driver and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his close friends, Bill and Sheryl Enyeart of Girard, Richard Watt, Joseph Colipetro and Randy and Chester Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Geraldine Golubic.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at noon at the Blackstone Funeral Home.


Carl C. Carson, 60

BOARDMAN – Private services were held Monday for Carl C. Carson, 60, who died the evening of July 24, at his residence.

Mr. Carson was born in Orlando, Fla. on April 19, 1949, a son of James and Alma Griffin Carson and moved to this area in 2006.

Carl is survived by his sister, Alma Brant, with whom he made his home; his nieces and nephews, Sandy Shapiro, Irene Ashley and Jeremy and Jason Brant; his great-nieces and great-nephews, April, Samantha and Sean Shapiro, Donovan and Jeremy Brant Jr. and Amanda and Lori Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jerry Carson; and his great-niece, Stephanie Shapiro.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Boardman.

Rinaldo “Nano” DeMarco

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Rinaldo “Nano” DeMarco, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Marsha DeMarco, following a short illness. Rinaldo, better known to family and friends as “Nano” was just shy of his 76th birthday.

Nano was born July 30, 1933 to Eugenio and Mary (Mashalik) DeMarco in the Smokey Hollow area of Youngstown.

Nano attended The Rayen School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge from the Army, Nano worked for General Fireproofing and then later for Ohio Bell, which was later purchased by the AT&T Corporation. Mr. DeMarco retired as a technician from AT&T in 1992.

Mr. DeMarco was a loving husband, a wonderful father, a doting grandfather, an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, and a former treasurer of the CWA.

Mr. DeMarco was preceded in death by both of his parents and five siblings, Frederick DeMarco, Edward DeMarco, Eugene DeMarco, Joseph DeMarco and Catherine (DeMarco) Ciavarella.

Mr. DeMarco leaves behind his wife of 50 years, the former Ann Praznik of Hubbard; one son, Ronald (Marsha) DeMarco; one brother, Arthur (Patricia) DeMarco of Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Dominick, Madison and Victoria DeMarco of Liberty Township; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may call Wednesday, July 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kelley Robb Funeral Home in Hubbard.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30, at the Kelley Robb Funeral Home at 11 a.m.

Katharine L. Hunt, 62

HUBBARD – There will be a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Katharine L. Hunt, 62, who passed away Sunday at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.

Katharine known as “Ketchup” was born Aug. 21, 1946 in Warren, a daughter of David L. and Pauline A. Maurer Hunt and was a lifelong area resident.

She was employed by Packard Electric for 30 years, retiring in 1995 and was a member of the IUE Local 717.

She is survived by her sister, Carol A. Scheerer of New Market, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be calling hours Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

C. Isabel Joyce

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Niles Chapel for C. Isabel Joyce, formerly of Niles, who passed away Monday at home.

Isabel was born July 3, 1909 in Niles, a daughter of the late Patrick and Lavina (Martin) Joyce.

A graduate of Niles McKinley High School, she was a statistician for A & P Tea Co. for 46 years, retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Niles.

Isabel is survived by four nieces, Patricia (Dale) Nye of Bristolville, Nancy (Dave) Duvall, with whom she made her home, Deborah Joyce of Florida and Pamela (Ronny) Baldwin of Georgia; one nephew, William (Brenda) Joyce of Niles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Isabel was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and William Joyce; one nephew, Ralph Joyce; and two nieces, Alice Mae Renato and Myrna Crislip.

Charles “Charlie” Lissman, 69

YOUNGSTOWN – Charles “Charlie” Lissman, 69, of Gateway to Better Living No. 9 Group Home, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Briarfield at the Ridge.

Charles was born May 11, 1940 in Youngstown, the son of the late Howard and Doris (McGowan) Lissman.

Charles affectionately known as “Charlie” by his family, participated in the Special Summer Olympics and the Gateway to Better Living workshops in Youngstown and Boardman.

Charlie will always be remembered for his affectionate and heartwarming smile and will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially his immediate family, the people at No. 9 Group home and the Gateway administration.

Charlie leaves his cousin and guardian, Lee (Kathy) Raybuck of Poland. He leaves many cousins, especially Amy (Raybuck) Pavy, who Charlie had a special bond with.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Velma Marcavish, 91

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Velma Marcavish, 91, formerly of Youngstown, died July 18, 2009 at Hope Mills Retirement Center.

Before moving to Fayetteville, she resided at the Inn at Christine Valley for five years.

She was born June 30, 1918 in Nu Mine, Pa., a daughter of Robert and Florence Runyan Oakley.

She married William Marcavish on Oct. 19, 1940. He passed away on Dec. 6, 1990.

She was an active member of the Boardman Christian Church (Disciples Christian Church) for many years. She was employed by Strouss’ in downtown Youngstown in the candy department before retiring in 1975.

She devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, travel and needlework.

She leaves a daughter, Carol (Tom) Veauthier of Fayetteville, formerly of Austintown; a son, William (Peggy) Marcavish of Liberty; and grandchildren, Denise (James) Flanagan, Tom (Andrea) Veauthier and Jeffrey Veauthier, all of Fayetteville, Max (Laura) Marcavish of Liberty and Ian Marcavish of Ann Arbor, Mich. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Beside her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at the Disciple Christian Church (Boardman Christian Church), 565 Boardman-Canfield Road at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that Velma be remembered by donations made to the Alzheimer’s Association.


Clarence “Corny” McKnight, 71

NEW MIDDLETOWN – There will be a funeral service held on July 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road, Lowellville, OH 44436, with Pastor David Thomas officiating for Clarence “Corny” McKnight, 71, who passed into his eternal resting place on Sunday, July 26, 2009, with his loved ones surrounding him after a courageous nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Clarence “Corny” McKnight was born Oct. 3, 1938, the son of Cloyce (Cotton) Katherine (Kate) Groh McKnight. Everyone always asks, “Where did he get his name?” One of his father’s best friends said, “If you name that baby Clarence, I’ll never call him that, but will call him Corny.”

While in high school, Corny was employed with Kroger’s Grocery Store in Hubbard, and then was employed with Stambaugh Thompsons, Republic Steel, McKay Machine, and Packard Electric/Delphi.

Even from his sick bed, Corny was always spreading the gospel and teaching others about Jesus and His messages. For several years he was an active Sunday school teacher with the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, the New Life Assembly, and the Victory Christian Center and bible study leader at several churches. Corny also cared for shut-ins and leaves a great legacy to all who came in contact with him.

Corny had many hobbies and interests but some that he enjoyed the most were snow skiing, golfing, hunting, gardening, playing tennis and racquet ball, but most of all he loved going to breakfast with his family and friends. He was truly a mentor in every sense of the word. Corny also was active in the Hubbard Reunion Committee from the Class of 1956.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Dolores (Dolly) Lewis and would have been married 50 years this Oct. 24. Their love has been an inspiration to everyone who met them and they provided wonderful examples for their three daughters, Judy (Kevin) Hughes, Denise (Jeff) Huffman and Kelley (Rick) Horvath. His memory will be cherished by his seven granddaughters, Megan and Lauren Hughes, Kayla, Ashley and Melissa Huffman, Madison and Alivia Horvath. His sister, Marlene Koenig, will always have an empty space in her heart for her dear brother.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; a brother-in-law, Bob Koenig; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Frank and Annie Lewis; and a sister-in-law, Francine Barton.

Friends may call on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road in Lowellville.

Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Burial will take place at Zion Cemetery in New Middletown.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for all the phone calls, love, encouragement and compassion shown during Corny’s illness from all the doctors, nurses, friends and family who were there for us during this terrible ordeal.

Joanne A. Metzinger, 76

YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will begin at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Christine Church, celebrated by Msgr. David Rhodes, for Joanne A. Metzinger, 76, who died Monday morning at her residence after a seven year courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Metzinger was born July 16, 1933 in Youngstown, a daughter of Raymond and Eva Vogelberger Cleary and was a lifelong area resident.

She was a 1951 graduate of Ursuline High School and worked at Sharpe Lumber as a bookkeeper prior to starting her family.

She was a member of Saint Christine Church.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her husband of 55 years, John E. Metzinger, whom she married on Feb. 13, 1954; seven sons, Joseph (Pamela) Metzinger of Youngstown, John (Donna) Metzinger of Boardman, James Metzinger of Canfield, Thomas (Vinetta) Metzinger of Austintown, Robert (Shelly) Metzinger of Poland, Michael (Jona) Metzinger of Elyria and William (Dawn) Metzinger of Poland; three daughters, Joan (Frank) Koltonski of Beaufort, S.C., Mary Ann (John) James of Midlothian, Va. and Patty (Mark) Billec of Canfield; and 22 grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Philip Cleary and John Cleary; a sister, Agnes Cleary; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Sue Koltonski.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Koval, Dr. Knight and Hope Center for Cancer Care for all of their compassionate care.

In honor of her great-granddaughter, Emily Koltonski, the family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation, 12730 Triskett Road, Cleveland, OH 44111.

William E. Steele, 57

HUBBARD – William E. Steele, 57, passed away Monday, July 27, at Orange Village Care Center.

William was born March 12, 1952 in Youngstown, a son of Robert and Mary Williams Steele, and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

William was a truck driver.

He is survived by his children, James Steele, William (Brenda) Steele and Ronald Steel, all of Melbourne, Fla. and Robert (Dawn) Steele of Youngstown; five grandchildren; and his mother, Mary Williams Steele of Hubbard. He also leaves his sisters, Karen Banic and Francie (Dana) Johnson and his brother, Richard Steele, all of Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by his father.

There are no calling hours or services.

Robert B.Yohman, 79

YOUNGSTOWN – Robert B. Yohman, 79, came to rest on July 24, 2009.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita; children, Anna, Jennifer, Tanicca, David, Antoine, Crystal and Loraine; an adopted daughter, Patricia; and sons-in-law, Mohamed and Jermaine.

“Robert may the angels help ease your pace, while you make it to outer space to take your place in the Lord’s house, where you may rest. He chose you at this moment because he knew you were the best.”

Mary Zaitzew, 99

YOUNGSTOWN – Private services were held Monday at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for Mary Zaitzew, 99, who passed away Friday morning at Hospice House.

Mary was born Nov. 6, 1909 in Salem, Mass., a daughter of Paul and Irene Zubal Yaremchuk. She moved to Europe as a child and returned to the United States in 1922. She moved to this area in 1926.

She married Paul Zaitzew in 1926.

Mary leaves one daughter, Nadya Keenan of Youngstown; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Andrew Yarmchuk of New Jersey and William Yarmchuk of Florida.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, who died in 1950; one son, Harry Zaitzew; three daughters, Nellie Bevilacqua, Vera Houck and Helen Bilas; two brothers, Plato and Alexander Yarmchuk; and four sisters, Perena Brown, Pauline Bruno, Francis Haskowich and Olga Yaremchuk.

Walter J. Zysk, 83

“Together Again”

NILES – Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at The McCauley Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Church for Walter J. Zysk, 83, who passed Saturday morning at his residence surrounded by his family.

Mr. Zysk was born Jan. 25, 1926 in Pittsburgh, a son of Dallas and Laura Viets Zysk and came to this area as a child.

He was employed as a carpenter for U.S. Steel Corporation for more than 30 years and retired in 1988.

Mr. Zysk was a member of the church, Carpenters and Steelworkers Local Unions and was an avid fisherman, hunter and dedicated to his family.

He was a Marine veteran of World War II and a graduate of The Rayen School.

His wife, the former Anna Loretta O’Hara, whom he married on April 24, 1948, passed Aug. 24, 2003.

Mr. Zysk is survived by his sons, W. Edward (Anna Marie) of Niles, Richard of Youngstown and Timothy (Kathi) of Logan; grandchildren, Theresa Zysk, Elizabeth Zysk (Andrew) King, Christopher Zysk and Michael (Renee) Zysk.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Marie: brothers, Stanley and Anthony; and sisters, Josephine Appenzeller and Elizabeth Gerheart.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
