Lloyd Prescott Dewey, 92

GREENFORD TOWNSHIP – Lloyd Prescott Dewey, 92, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, one day after celebrating his 92nd birthday at St. Elizabeth Health Center

Mr. Dewey was born in Youngstown on July 26, 1917, the son of the late Lloyd Barton and Lula Mae (Prescott) Dewey.

A World War II veteran, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1941 and became a combat photographer based in the South Pacific.

He worked into his late 70s designing rolling mill equipment and extrusion presses. He retired from Wein Engineering.

Mr. Dewey took up flying after World War II and obtained his commercial and instructors pilot ratings. He loved writing and was published in several sailing magazines and engineering publications. Mr. Dewey was a past commodore of the local Power Squadron and belonged to the Boardman Camera Club.

Mr. Dewey leaves behind his wife, Martha Mayers Dewey, they met while attending South High School in Youngstown and were married for 72 years.

He leaves behind a son, Gary Grant (Elizabeth) Dewey of Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Susan Parish of Clayton, Calif. and Sharon Dewey of Canfield; two grandchildren, Gavin Dewey of Phoenix and Kaity Parish of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Grant William Dewey.

There will be no services or calling hours.

Raymond Holloway, 90

NICHOLASVILLE, KY. – Services were held Wednesday in Nicholasville and a memorial service was held on Friday at the Metropolitan Baptist Church for Raymond Holloway, 90, formerly of Early Road in Youngstown.

Raymond, who entered eternal life on Friday, July 10, was born Aug. 2, 1918 in Holly Springs, Miss., the son of Calvin and Adelina Holloway.

Raymond worked 37 years for Republic Steel, retiring in 1980. He was a member and trustee of the Metropolitan Baptist Church. He loved fishing and gardening.

He married Johnnie Mae Cook on July 28, 1947. She passed Aug. 30, 1999.

The legacy Raymond leaves to be cherished in memoriam will be to his two sons, John Holloway of Youngstown and Charles (Melissa) Holloway of Cleveland; his three daughters, Jocelyn Jackson of Marietta, Ga., Jolynn Trent of Nicholasville and Jackie (Antoine) Caffey of Youngstown; one sister, Willie B. Holloway of Lorain; 10 grandchildren, Yusuf (Rikita) Holloway of Marietta, Joi Holloway of Youngstown, Nicole (Sylvester) Wright of Lexington, Ky., Melvin Trent Jr. and Latasha Trent of Nicholasville, Derek Caffey, Shanice Caffey, Jasmine Caffey and Jermail Calhoun of Youngstown and Keiderick Holloway of Melbourne, Fla.; and his four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him to his heavenly ascension to the kingdom is his wife, Johnnie Mae Holloway; parents, Calvin and Adelina Holloway; son, Joseph Cook-Holloway; sisters, Mary Holloway, Elvie Holloway and Sylvia Malone; and brothers, Calvin Holloway, Hue Holloway and London Holloway.

Ira Eber Martin, 91

COLUMBIANA – Ira Eber Martin, 91, passed away at 12:22 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at the Ivy Woods Care Center in North Lima, where he had resided for the last three months. Prior to that he had resided on Renkenberger Road in Columbiana.

Ira was born March 1, 1918 in Wayne County, the son of the late William and Anna (Lehman) Martin.

In earlier years, Mr. Martin raised laying hens and sold eggs on a retail route in Youngstown. He later owned and operated Martin’s Auto Body Shop from his home for 25 years and also worked at G.M. Lordstown plant from where he retired in 1979. He was a member of the Midway Mennonite Church in Columbiana. Ira enjoyed walking in the woods, hunting, fishing and observing nature. He also liked reading, traveling, classical and sacred music as well.

Ira is survived by his wife, Martha (Weaver) Martin, whom he married on Jan. 21, 1943. He is also survived by daughters, Naomi “Molly” (John) Hostetler of Columbiana, Lucille (John) Clark of Washingtonville, Charlotte (William) Beck of Berlin Center, Kathy (Bill) Schroedel of Silver Lake and Carol Moser of Austintown; sons, Lowell (Doris) Martin of Strasburg, Colo., Ronald (Patty) Martin of Warren and Lawrence (Lucia) Martin of Leavittsburg; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Martin and two brothers, Daniel and Harvey Martin.

Services will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the Midway Mennonite Church in Columbiana.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana and also one hour prior to the service on Sunday Aug. 2, at the church.

David E. McGlynn, 78

HUBBARD – David E. McGlynn, 78, died Monday, July 27, 2009, at Hospice House.

He was born Oct. 22, 1930 in Youngstown, a son of Tommy and Anna Mae McGlynn and lived most of his life in the area.

Mr. McGlynn served with the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1967. He then worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube for three years, Hartford Machine Service for 17 years and has worked for Taco Bell in Hubbard for 17 years, since they opened in 1992. Dave has the distinction of being the oldest Taco Bell employee in the United States.

David was a member of St. Patrick Church in Hubbard and enjoyed baseball and traveling.

His wife, the former Jean M. Darrow, whom he married Feb. 24, 1968, died June 23, 2008.

He leaves three sons, Charles (Nanette) Thompson of Hubbard, James (Laura) McGlynn of Texas and David Price of Las Vegas; three daughters, Susan M. (Steve) Shrader of Hartford, Mary Anne (Donald Orr) Mullins of Masury and Donna Finney of New Mexico; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Patrick Thompson; and a daughter, Patricia Klingbeil.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home.

Family and friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clarence “Corny” McKnight, 71

NEW MIDDLETOWN – There will be a funeral service held on July 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road, Lowellville, OH 44436, with Pastor David Thomas officiating for Clarence “Corny” McKnight, 71, who passed into his eternal resting place on Sunday, July 26, 2009, with his loved ones surrounding him after a courageous nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Clarence “Corny” McKnight was born Oct. 3, 1938, the son of Cloyce (Cotton) Katherine (Kate) Groh McKnight. Everyone always asks, “Where did he get his name?” One of his father’s best friends said, “If you name that baby Clarence, I’ll never call him that, but will call him Corny.”

While in high school, Corny was employed with Kroger’s Grocery Store in Hubbard, and then was employed with Stambaugh Thompsons, Republic Steel, McKay Machine, and Packard Electric/Delphi.

Even from his sick bed, Corny was always spreading the gospel and teaching others about Jesus and His messages. For several years he was an active Sunday school teacher with the Petersburg Presbyterian Church, the New Life Assembly, and the Victory Christian Center and bible study leader at several churches. Corny also cared for shut-ins and leaves a great legacy to all who came in contact with him.

Corny had many hobbies and interests but some that he enjoyed the most were snow skiing, golfing, hunting, gardening, playing tennis and racquet ball, but most of all he loved going to breakfast with his family and friends. He was truly a mentor in every sense of the word. Corny also was active in the Hubbard Reunion Committee from the Class of 1956.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Dolores (Dolly) Lewis and would have been married 50 years this Oct. 24. Their love has been an inspiration to everyone who met them and they provided wonderful examples for their three daughters, Judy (Kevin) Hughes, Denise (Jeff) Huffman and Kelley (Rick) Horvath. His memory will be cherished by his seven granddaughters, Megan and Lauren Hughes, Kayla, Ashley and Melissa Huffman, Madison and Alivia Horvath. His sister, Marlene Koenig, will always have an empty space in her heart for her dear brother.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; a brother-in-law, Bob Koenig; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Frank and Annie Lewis; and a sister-in-law, Francine Barton.

Friends may call today, July 29, 2009, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Victory Christian Center, 3899 McCartney Road in Lowellville.

Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Burial will take place at Zion Cemetery in New Middletown.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for all the phone calls, love, encouragement and compassion shown during Corny’s illness from all the doctors, nurses, friends and family who were there for us during this terrible ordeal.

Thomas G. Meckulch, 83

GIRARD – Memorial services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Thomas G. Meckulch, 83, who died Monday morning.

Tom was born April 6, 1926 in Youngstown, the son of John and Edna (Ripple) Meckulch, and was a lifelong area resident.

Tom was employed for over 40 years for Aerolite Extrusions, where he retired in 1990 as shipping foreman. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Austintown American Legion and Austintown VFW. Tom was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching all sports events. The joy of his life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Ted of Dublin, John (Betty) of Girard and daughter, Sherry Willrich, also of Girard. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte (Osborne) Meckulch, whom he married April 29, 1950 and who died March 9, 2007; brothers, Harold, Paul and Louie; sister, Francis Poppleriter; and son-in-law, Richard Willrich.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home, prior to services.

Ashley Nicole Phillips, 23

STRUTHERS – Ashley Nicole Phillips, 23, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009.

Ashley was born April 4, 1986 in Youngstown.

She is survived by her father, Rodney Phillips of Youngstown; her mother, Tina Maynard and her companion, John Farrar of Struthers; her daughter, Carolyn Spencer of Struthers; her sisters, Brittney, Courtney and Destaney Phillips; a brother, Rodney Phillips Jr.; grandfather, Joseph Jones of McDonald; grandmother, Carolyn Phillips of Youngstown; two nephews, James and Edward Bevly; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Rick Maynard; paternal grandfather, Charles Phillips; and maternal grandmother, Patricia Jones.

Services will be held on Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Blackstone Funeral Home, where visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. ,prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that monetary contributions be made to Blackstone Funeral Home to defray funeral expenses.

Leiana V. Tomlinson, 45

AUSTINTOWN – Leiana V. Tomlinson, 45, passed away at 10:35 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, in St. Elizabeth Health Center, from complications following kidney failure.

Leiana was born March 19, 1964 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of John and Ernestine (Luten) Tomlinson Sr.

She was a 1982 graduate of The Rayen School.

Leiana was multi-talented in many ways and had a passion for singing.

Leiana is survived by her life partner of 20 years, Mary Quisenberry, whom she met Aug. 23, 1989; her father of California; her mother-in-law, Mary (Creed) Quisenberry of Austintown; brothers and sisters, Lynn Tomlinson, John Tomlinson Jr., Renee Tomlinson, Brian Tomlinson, Nancy Tomlinson and Christina Pettis; brothers-in-law, Bart (Mary Lynn) Quisenberry, Jeff Quisenberry and Randy (Kerry) Quisenberry; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Kerensky; nieces and nephews, Allena, Victor, Nicki, Toni, Johanna, Emma, Alex, Sophie, Zachary, Taylor, Austin, Noah, Rachel and Alyse; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and by a host of friends.

Leiana was preceded in death by her mother.

Family will receive friends on Friday, July 31, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.

A celebration of life service will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Leiana’s name to the funeral home to help defray costs of the funeral.

Adeline Lena Trobek, 79

NILES – Adeline Lena Trobek, 79, of Niles, formerly of Girard, passed away at 9:25 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009, at her residence, following a one year illness.

She was born in Niles on Feb. 23, 1930 to Frederick and Raffel (Bellitt) Marsico.

A 1948 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, she retired in 1996 after working 30 years as a bookkeeper at Warren Tool Company. She also was the bookkeeper for 20 years at the Frasca Insurance Agency. She was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard and enjoyed traveling, attending summer concerts, family activities with her grandchildren, and in her younger years, camping.

Adeline in survived by two daughters, Donna Trobek of Girard and Annette (Marvin) Bertleff of Warren; son, Danny (Kimberlee) Mackie of Girard; granddaughter, Brandi Bertleff of Warren; two great-grandchildren, Sidnee and Danny Mackie of Girard; two sisters, Mary Marsico, with whom she made her home and Beverly (Thomas) Findish of Lorain; brother, Vincent (Louise) Marsico of Niles; four nephews; and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Trobek, whom she married in 1969 and who passed away on June 11, 2000; and two sisters, Rose Mastromatto and Rita Stuart.

The funeral will be Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Fred Lukehart will officiate.

Burial will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.

Alfred Wevers, 82

NEW MEXICO – Alfred Wevers, 82, formerly of Niles, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, at Omni Manor.

Alfred was born May 30, 1927 to the late Alfred and Gertrude Forder Wevers in Pittsburgh.

He was a truck driver for Schwebels Bread Co. in Youngstown. He was a former member of the Masons. Alfred served in World War II in the 82nd Airborne and also the Merchant Marines.

He is survived by his children, Bobby Kay (Chuck) Brandyberry of Pittsburgh, Alfred (Carol) Wevers Jr. of Howland, Kathy (Dan) Rosenberger of Niles and James E. (Robin) Wevers of McDonald; a sister, Jackie; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Davis Wevers, who passed away May 4, 2008; a son, William “Doug” Wevers; and a brother, Thomas.

Graveside services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.
