Ethel Harris, 79
LISBON Ethel Harris, 79, of the Vista Centre in Lisbon, went home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2009 at Salem Community Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Youngstown on Feb. 5, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Sophia Mouhlas Harris. She spent most of her life in Youngstown before coming to Lisbon.
Ethel worked many years as a coiler at General Electric before her retirement.
Ethel was a life member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Youngstown and was also a member of the Seniors Club and the Ladies Philoptohos Society. Among her other activities, she played Mah Jongg and was a member of the Red Hats. She enjoyed playing cards and getting together with family and friends.
Preceding her in death are her brothers, John, Ernest and Pete and an infant sister, Jean.
She is survived by her sister, Ann (Charles) Senanefes and sisters-in-law, Olga Harris, Mary Diamond and Jean Canfield. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many friends.
Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home in Cornersburg where Fr. John Karabatsos will conduct the Trisagion service at 3:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Burial will be at Belmont Park Cemetery.

Harry Red Kale Jr., 83
YOUNGSTOWN There will be a private funeral service held on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens in Canfield, for Harry Red Kale Jr., 83, who passed away on Friday morning, July 31, 2009, at Hospice House from an extended illness.
Red will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.
He was born Aug. 20, 1925 in Youngstown, the son of Harry E. Sr. and Laura (Rakestraw) Kale and was a lifelong area resident.
Red was employed as a shear and crane operator for G.F. Business Company for over 41 years and retired on Aug. 20, 1987.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served from Aug. 17, 1943 until his Honorable Discharge on March 19, 1946. He received the following decorations and citations the ALNAV40-46, the European Theater Ribbon, the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Red was a member of the VFW Post No. 3538 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 213.
He enjoyed gardening, boating and fishing.
His wife, the former Angeline Marie Lariccia, whom he married June 10, 1948, died Aug. 5, 1996.
Red leaves to cherish his memory his two sons, Harry P. (Jayne) Kale of New Middletown and Richard (JoAnne) Kale of Canfield; and four grandsons, Brian (Amy) Kale, Rick Kale Jr., Matthew (Molly) Kale and Nick Kale.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lamar Kale and three sisters, Mary Leonard, Ruth Harris and Mabel Jones.
Friends may call on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.
Burial will take place at Greenhaven Memorial Gardens.

James Kennedy, 66
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mr. James Kennedy, 66, who passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at the Louis Stokes Wade Park VA Hospital.
Mr. Kennedy, lovingly known as Bo, was born Jan. 3, 1943 in Youngstown, a son of Curtis M. Bryant and Bernice Palmer.
He had been employed in the auto body department of Youngstown Buick, which added to his passion for working on automobiles. He was an Army veteran.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, the former Josephine Hudson, whom he married June 20, 1963; three children, Tod Kennedy of Columbus and Curtis M. and James B. Kennedy, both of Youngstown; two brothers, Jessie Lee Palmer of Youngstown and Gary Bryant of Indiana; five grandchildren, James III, Justin, Jordan and Aaron Kennedy and Chmicka Kennedy, whom he helped to rear; a special friend, Yuvonka McKinney; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, George E. Kennedy; two brothers, Curtis Marty and Richard Bryant.

Leigh H. Klingensmith, 72
SARASOTA, FLA. Leigh H. Klingensmith, 72, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Saturday, July 18.
A memorial gathering will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 10143 Main St. in New Middletown on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 3 p.m.
Leigh was born in Warren, on Dec. 24, 1936, the son of Lloyd and Kathryn Klingensmith.
He was a graduate of Bristol High School and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University.
He is survived by his partner, Norma Hoffmaster of Sarasota; his son, Scott Klingensmith of Sarasota; his daughter, Kathy Klingensmith of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and his sisters, Karolyn Shockey of Warren and Juanita Ewing of New Baltimore, Mich.
Leigh was a teacher, coach, and administrator for 36 years in the Springfield Local School District.

Paul Moe Manners, 77
MASURY Paul Moe Manners, 77, died on Thursday July 30, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Manners was born Dec. 30, 1931 in Hubbard, a son of Paul T. Manners and Ella E. (Swogger) Manners.
He married the former Joy B. Storier on July 17, 1954 and together they have shared 55 years of marriage.
Moe had served his country in the U.S. Army, and went on to work for the Brookfield Local Schools as well as Brookfield Township Road Department for more than 30 years as a mechanic.
His free time was spent doing what he loved, fishing, especially for Walleye on Mosquito lake. He also enjoyed woodworking, and traveling to his cabin in Punxsutawney, Pa., to go camping with his brother, Bob.
Moe also had enjoyed spending many good times with friends and family at the Orangeville Tavern in Orangeville, which his daughter and son-in-law own.
He was also a member of the Twin State Auto Club and had loved going to numerous races.
Mr. Manners is survived by his wife, Joy; his two sons, Terry Manners and his wife, Barbara of Masury and George Manners and his wife, Denise of Hubbard; three daughters, Diane Weaver and her husband, Jeff of Boardman, Sharon Zreliak and her husband, Eugene of Burghill and Karen Miller and her husband, Jeff of Masury; three brothers, Don Manners of California, Bob Manners of Columbiana and Pete Manners of California; his sister, Betty Justis of Niles; 10 grandchildren, Bobby, Michael, Tommy, Scott, Jonathan, Adrianne, Joshua, Jeffrey, Ryan and Nathaniel; and also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, Jessica, Dylan, Ashley, Kaelob, Austin, Madison, Bradyn, and twins Cole and Chase.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling hours will be held Sunday at the Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel in Brookfield from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. John Temple officiating.

Donald J. McTigue
YOUNGSTOWN Donald J. McTigue, better known to his friends and family as Ducky, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at his home.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 56 years, Mary Lee (Taylor); his five children, Don McTigue (Ann), Christopher McTigue (Sharon), Kathleen Forde (Tony), Maureen Gasca and Michele McTigue (Jay); and his 10 grandchildren.
Don was born March 18, 1931 in Youngstown to John E. and Mary C. (Billock) McTigue.
He attended St. Edwards Elementary School and Ursuline High School, graduating in 1948. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, including during the Korean Conflict.
He was a licensed independent insurance agent from 1954 until his death. He began his professional career with C. Roy Taylor Insurance in Girard, until founding his own agency, Liberty Insurance. He also worked for more than 10 years as a railroad fireman with Conrail.
Don was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was an active volunteer with many charitable organizations, including Trumbull County Mobile Meals, Trumbull County March of Dimes, Mended Hearts and The Renal Network. He was also an active member of the Girard Chamber of Commerce and a Cub Scout leader. However, he was most proud of his membership in and work with Rotary International. He was a charter member of the Girard-Liberty Rotary Club, later served as its president, and later was elected Governor of District 6650 from 1981 to 1982.
Calling hours are this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday, Aug. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Youngstown, preceded by a calling hour at 9:30 a.m. at the church, followed by a reception at the church hall.

POWELL, OHIO Gregory R. Passewitz, 62, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009.
Professor Emeritus from the Ohio State University, graduate of the Youngstown State University and the University of Nebraska, received his doctorate from the Ohio State University.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Darleen Passewitz; daughters, Allison Passewitz and Tami (Jeff) Peyton; granddaughters, Haley and Madison; brother, Thomas (Darrel) Passewitz; nephew, Patrick; niece, Jennifer; in-laws, Fred and Dorothy Porter; brother-in-law, David (Susan) Porter; niece, Laura; and nephew, Kevin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Dorothy Passewitz.

Edward Shimborske Jr, 60
WARREN Edward Shimborske Jr., 60, completed his journey on this Earth on July 31, 2009 at University Hospital in Cleveland following a massive stroke.
He began his expedition on March 5, 1949 in Waynesburg, Pa., the son of Edward and Anne (Kraynek) Shimborske.
The family moved to Warren, where he spent most of his life. He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1967, received his BA from Youngstown State University, and later his ME from the University of Dayton. Shimborske then found the perfect fit for his personality at Champion High School, where he instructed Art for 33 years and coached varsity football.
Following his retirement, he worked as a Guidance Counselor for two years at St. Patricks in Kent. A professional artist, he designed numerous CD covers, his most renowned being the final two, Grammy nominated musical endeavors of Frankie Yankovic, the Polka King. A testament to his style and work, a poster of his artwork was part of the set of The Drew Carey Show. Likewise, Shimborske designed many corporate logos, tattoo designs, T-shirt graphics, and the mural and color scheme for the Howland Fractured Prune.
Ed enjoyed spending time with his family and collecting autographs. He loved to travel and explore new places, visiting Europe, South America, Panama, Alaska, and the Caribbean Islands. He was especially fond of cruising. Ed also journeyed far and wide in the USA and enjoyed off-the-beaten-path loop trips with friends and family.
Shimborske enjoyed a good cigar with friends, and his witty, off-the-wall sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He appreciated film and music of all styles and genres, and was a huge contributor to the Glass Eye, where his journalism career encompassed hundreds of insightful reviews and interviews.
Eddie was an avid sports fan. For many years, he pitched for countless softball teams, enjoyed playing street hockey, and traveled around in search of minor-league games. He loved the Indians and the Browns.
Ed leaves behind his wife, Karen (Morris), whom he married Feb. 10, 1970; his sons, Edward Shimborske III (Jennifer Matteson) and Micah Morris Shimborske (Amanda Popovich); as well as five grandchildren, Edward Shimborske IV and Madison, Emma, Evelyn and Ennio Morris Shimborske. His mother, Anne (Kraynek) Shimborske of Warren survives him; as well as his brother Daniel Shimborske (Donna Cheraso) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; mother-in-law, Virginia Morris of Warren; brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Wendy Clagett of Howland; and nephews, Thomas Shimborske and Wayne and Neil Clagett.
A Fine Arts Scholarship will be established in his memory through Champion High School, c/o Anthony Carsone, 5976 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren, OH 44483.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Warren. Pastor Dee Emmert will officiate.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Robert G. Swogger, 61
HUBBARD There will be services at 11 a.m. Monday at the Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for Robert G. Swogger, 61, who passed away Thursday at home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Robert was born April 9, 1948 in Youngstown, a son of William T. and Linder L. Wilson Swogger and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.
He was a 1966 graduate of Hubbard High School and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Hubbard.
He worked at GATX in Masury, owned and operated Sur-Fit Body Panels, and was a truck driver for Pam Dedicated of North Jackson.
He enjoyed camping, boating, riding his motorcycle, and most of all, spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, the former Judy Pugh, whom he married May 5, 1973; his children, Robert Hornyak of Southington, Diane (Don) Mihordin of West Middlesex, Pa., and David Swogger and Joseph Swogger, both of Hubbard; his grandchildren, Sydney, Tatia, Maddie, Robert and Libby; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brothers, William R. (Alice) Swogger of Andersonville, Tenn. and Frederick L. (Judy) Swogger of Ocala, Fla. and his sister, Dorothy L. (Ed) Jansen of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
