Sam Nassar

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown, with the Rev. Gary George officiating, for Sam Nassar, who died Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Inn at Christine Valley where he resided for the last three years.

Known to many as “Uncle Sammy” and most notably as “Giddo,” he is survived by his two sisters, Virginia George and Marie Nassief; three beloved children, Liz Colla, Charlie Nassar, and Ida Johns. He was a proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, Jay, Chris and Joe Colla, Amy Ann and David Nassar, and Jennifer Miller and Michael Johns; three great-grandchildren, Meredith and Allison Colla and Ambrose Martinez-Colla. He also leaves behind countless nieces and nephews, cousins and other family and many close friends.

He was very fond of the wonderful nurses and staff at the Inn and loved his niece, Barbara Sardich, who was like a third daughter to him.

Sam was born in Youngstown Dec. 17, 1919, to Aziz and Liza Nassar.

He graduated from East High and was veteran of World War II, serving proudly in Europe. He was a lifelong resident of Youngstown. His family was of the Village of Bikfaya in Lebanon, and he was a long-time member of St. Maron’s Maronite Catholic Church.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, where he was a Corporal. In his early years, he ran a grocery store with his family. He met his wife and true love, Amy Michael, early in 1942, before he left for the service. They dated on and off during his military tour, and eventually got married in 1945 at St. Maron’s Church. Together with his family, they continued to run Nassar’s United SuperMarket until 1960.

Following that, he ventured into various entrepreneur projects including a home improvement business and Sam’s Party Center. Later he became a well-known salesman for Troyer Farms Potato Chips.

After he retired, he and Amy devoted their time to their seven grandchildren and loved spending time with family and friends. They didn’t miss a family function, as Sam’s central core was his family – and with them, friends were family. He never forgot those that he loved. And he did love.

Mr. Nassar had a passion for the Cleveland Cavs and Indians. For years, if there was a game on the television or radio, he wouldn’t miss it. He also enjoyed his traditional Lebanese food, always asking his son and daughters to bring some to the Inn or take him out. He had a soft spot also for Scarsella’s and Belleria restaurants.

An avid card player, Sammy loved to play cards – any cards. He was a member of many Poker and Pinochle groups over the years, and always enjoyed a night game of Gin Rummy with Amy while she was still alive.
