Donald E. Barnum, 90
HOWLAND TOWNSHIP Donald E. Barnum, 90, died peacefully at his home Wednesday Aug. 12, 2009, following a short illness.
He was born May 10, 1919 in Niles, the son of Samuel R. and Margie (Root) Barnum.
A lifetime area resident, Don was a 1937 graduate of Howland High School. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Army and served with the 505th Engineering light pontoon Battalion landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day. He participated in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern service medal with five battle stars, the good conduct medal and two citations.
After the war, he returned to Warren and was employed by Sears Roebuck and Co. as a hardware department manager in downtown Warren and as a maintenance supervisor at the Eastwood Mall store, retiring in 1982 after 39 years of service.
Don was a faithful member of the Howland Community Church for 85 years, where he was a deacon emeritus and a former trustee.
He was a Howland volunteer fireman for 21 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and also was an EMT and arson investigator.
He enjoyed gardening, yard work, bowling, fishing, and especially the Wednesday breakfast group.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eleanor May (Young) Barnum, whom he married Aug. 28, 1940; a daughter, Denise E. (John) Morfchak of Lodi; and two grandsons, John Donald and Jared Andrew Morfchak, both of Westfield Center. He also leaves a sister, Stella (Joe) Cairns of Dunedin, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James and three sisters, Alta Bock, Hazel Rohrbach and Annabell Bauer.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at the Howland Community Church. The Rev. Brian Byrne will officiate.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Roberts-Clark Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be at Crown Hill Burial Park.

Virginia Caldwell
PITTSBURGH Virginia Caldwell of Mt. Lebanon passed away Aug. 13, 2009, at Asbury Nursing Home.
She was born June 14, 1929 in Pittsburgh to Samuel George and Anna Head Bowman.
She graduated in 1947 from Northfield Academy and in 1951 from Hood College.
In 1972, Virginia received her Masters from Carnegie Mellon University. She worked for the IRS. She was a member of the Southminister Presbyterian Church.
Virginia is survived by a son, Walter (Cindy) Caldwell of Pittsburgh; one daughter, Christine (Steven) Grabert of Boardman; two grandsons, Walter Caldwell and Mike (Stefanie) Caldwell, all of Pittsburgh; two granddaughters, Pamela (Brian) Rowan of Columbus and Sarah Grabert of Cleveland; and one great-granddaughter, Victoria Caldwell of Pittsburgh.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Caldwell, whom she married July 7, 1951.
There will be a private family graveside service.

John W. Conrecode, 81
TALLMADGE There will be a memorial Mass this morning at the Holy Family Church in Stow for John W. Conrecode, 81, who passed away Tuesday at his residence.
Mr. Conrecode was born Nov. 14, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of Edward J. and Bridget A. McAndrew Conrecode Sr.
He was a 1945 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended Youngstown College. John was a salesman for the Campbell Cement Company in Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. He was a member of the Holy Family Church.
Besides his wife, the former Catherine Needham, whom he married in June of 1954, he leaves a daughter, Molly (Paul) Singer of Washington, D.C.; four sons, John (Nancy) Conrecode of Cuyahoga Falls, Thomas (Jackie) Conrecode of Naples, Fla., Robert (Alana) Conrecode of Charlotte, N.C. and Paul Conrecode of Seattle; three sisters, Mary E. Connie Burns of Orland Park, Ill., Jayne Pursifull of Poland and Theresa (Jack) Nichols of Columbiana; and 10 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Conrecode and Edward J. Conrecode Jr.

James L. Durkin, 69
YOUNGSTOWN Private services were held on Thursday Aug. 13, at the McVean, Hughes & McClurkin Funeral Home for James L. Durkin, 69, who died early Tuesday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Mr. Durkin was born July 5, 1940 in Youngstown, the son of Leo J. and Mary Dilissio Durkin.
He graduated from Boardman High School in 1958. Jim was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was employed at the Timkin Latrobe Company, retiring in 2005.
Mr. Durkin is survived by his wife of 20 years, the former Carol Ann Chatham.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his dog, Midnite.
Clarence Higham, 83
POLAND Clarence Higham, 83, died Aug. 12, 2009 at Hospice House.
Mr. Higham was born June 2, 1926 in Youngstown, a son of Thomas and Catherine Ramsdale Higham. He has been a resident of Poland since 1951.
He was a 1944 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from June of 1944 until June of 1946.
Mr. Higham had a lifelong career in automotive sales and leasing, working for Strausbaugh Dodge Motor Company for 26 years and most recently for Sweeney Chevy Buick Pontiac GMC of Youngstown. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post No. 15, and was past president of the Poland Kiwanis.
Mr. Higham enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
His wife, the former Frieda Joseph, whom he married May 7, 1950, died Sept. 20, 1992.
Mr. Higham is survived by his four daughters, Janet Burky, Linda (James) Timmins, both of Berlin Center, Joanne (James) Pearsol of Columbus and Dr. Carol (Michael) Azar of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren, Jennalee Burky, Maxwell, Jacob, and Zachary Timmins and Benjamin and Natalie Azar.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Higham; and his grandson, Nicholas Timmins.
Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Poland with Pastor Paul Burgeson officiating. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and Monday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.

Irene L. Kenneally, 93
BOARDMAN Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Fox Funeral Home, for Irene L. Kenneally, 93, who passed away Thursday afternoon at Greenbriar Healthcare Center.
Irene was born Oct. 13, 1915 in Youngstown, a daughter of John and Gizella Soltis, and has been a lifelong area resident.
She was a graduate of East High School. She was a homemaker and loved taking care of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in McDonald.
She will be sadly missed by her husband of 72 years, James J Kenneally, whom she married July 14, 1937. She also leaves three sons, Lawrence J. (Elizabeth) Kenneally of Brooklyn Mich., James P. (Marlene) Kenneally of Wellington, Fla. and Terrence M. Kenneally of Hallendan, Fla.; two daughters, Karen Kenneally of Lebanon and Janice (Phillip) Courtney of Alliance; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Soltis and eight sisters, Helen Brundage, Mae Swisher, Margaret Humphrey, Ethel Cowen, Evelyn Griffen, Dorothy Long, Zell Cooper and Emma Graves.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and aids at Greenbriar and Hospice of the Valley, who took such good care of Irene.

YOUNGSTOWN Gerald Stephen Jerry Kolesar, 57, passed away unexpectedly at 10:17 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center of an apparent heart attack suffered at home.
He was born May 1, 1952 in Youngstown to Steven and Mary (Cicuto) Kolesar.
A Navy veteran, Jerry attended South High School and was a self-employed barber. He enjoyed the Cleveland Browns and being with his friends. Everyone will remember him for his great sense of humor.
He is survived by a son, Steven Kolesar of Independence; daughter, Pamela (Justin) McFadden of Pickerington; two grandsons, William Edward McFadden and Maximus Andrew McFadden; two brothers, Jack Kolesar of Boardman and Jeff (Francie) Kolesar of Niles; and a sister, Janet (Richard) Kolesar-Lis of Findley.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judy Kolesar; and sister-in-law, Connie Kolesar.
The funeral will be Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel in Youngstown.

STRUTHERS There will be a funeral service held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Helen M. Leigh, 55, who passed away on Tuesday evening, Aug. 11, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer with her loving family by her side.
Helen will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends.
She was born June 9, 1954 in Erie, Pa., the daughter of William and Alice (Uplinger) Sweet.
Helen was a nurses aid for various institutions along with being a homemaker. She was very involved with the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life in the area.
Helen enjoyed gardening, motorcycles and baking, where she had a talent for decorating all types of cakes.
Helen loved taking care of people, but she especially loved taking care of her children and grandchildren and just spending time with them.
She leaves to cherish her memory her four children, Jonathan (Dina) Sears of Youngstown, Amy Frye of Meadville, Pa., Delores Leigh of Struthers and Robin (Donald) Sharbutt of Sharon, Pa.; six grandchildren, Cody, Amber, Samantha, Katie, Jonathan Jr. and Jadyn; five sisters, Alice Davis of Florida, Mary Hochmuth of New York, Billie Jo Cope of Rogers and Judi (Zeke) Moore and Norma Jean Lilly, both of North Carolina; two brothers, Daniel Sweet of Struthers and Bill Jr. (Loretta) Sweet of Girard; and a stepmother, Erla (Vern) Shannon of Girard.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Frye.

Billy L. Lippiatt, 77
YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Austintown for Billy L. Lippiatt, 77, who died Wednesday morning at his home with his wife by his side after a long battle with heart disease.
He was born April 22, 1932 in Salem, a son of William Lippiatt and Vera (Gibb) Lippiatt Hoffman.
He was a 1951 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, where he sang in the choir and in musical reviews and radio broadcasts, and was a member of the Starlighters.
Bill served in the U.S. Air Force making this his occupation for 27 years, before retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in May 1977. He was also a member of American Legion Post 301, and a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir until his death.
He enjoyed art, pottery making and woodworking. He also enjoyed playing golf and was an avid reader and computer user.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 57 years, the former Patricia A. Delany, whom he married Oct. 31, 1952. He also leaves behind three children, Deborah Wagner of Austintown, Robert (Missy) Lippiatt of Portsmouth, Va. and Scott Lippiatt of Austintown; five grandsons, Michael, Matthew, Allen, Kyle and Andrew Lippiatt; two brothers, Duane (Rita) Hoffman of Phoenix and Kenneth (Shelly) Hoffman of Fairfield Glades, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Hoffman.
Friends may call for one hour prior to services at the church from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Naze was born Aug. 22, 1965, a son of Herman Sr and Leona Taylor Naze.
He was a 1983 graduate of South High School and received his bachelors degree from Kent State University. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and was a youth advocate with the Needles Eye. He enjoyed spiritual music, movies, bowling and wall art.
He leaves to forever cherish his precious memory, his mother, Leona, of Youngstown; two sisters, Margo Naze of Hinesville, Ga. and Lucretia Naze Williams of Youngstown; nephews, Jemel Jenkins and TreMond Naze; nieces, Rakia Naze, Kie`Andrea Thomas, Alicia Williams and Brittany Robbins; great-niece, Amyah Jenkins; four great-nephews, Jemel Jenkins Jr., JSean Naze, Jaden Naze and Kaighden Jenkins; and a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Naze Sr.; two brothers, Leon and Andreaus Naze; and a niece, Dominique Williams.

VIENNA - Carlos Edward Sanchez, 6, died Aug. 5, 2009, in California.
Carlos was born Jan. 8, 2003 in Florence, KY., the son of Juan Sanchez and Alicia Sanchez.
He loved the Power Rangers, Transformers, playing soccer with his friends and cousins, swimming, Sudoku puzzles, and playing his Nintendo DS. He also loved eating at Chipotle, and traveling, to Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and all over the United States. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Besides his parents, he leaves his maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Lynn Buckner of Vienna; paternal grandfather, Juan D. Sanchez, of Santa Fe, N.M.; maternal great-grandparents, Edwin and Mary Ann Johnston of Struthers and Glen West of Vienna and Sonny and Marquitta Misciskia of Liberty; and a great-great-grandmother, Pearl Toto of Struthers. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Amatista Saturno; a maternal grandfather, Edward Johnston; maternal great-grandmother, Vivian West; and his paternal great-grandmother, Aura Hernandez.
Family and friends will be received Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Matthew Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

YOUNGSTOWN-A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 9:20 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Rosemary L. Valerio, 87, who passed away at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Liberty Health Care Center.
Rosemary was born Jan. 5, 1922 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Gaetano and Josephine (DeGaetano) Gaetano and lived in the area all of her life.
A homemaker, Rosemary was a member of St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown, and previously worked at G.F. Wells & Grants Department Store.
Rosemary is survived by three children, JoAnne (Rick) Kale of Canfield, Terry (Peggy) Valerio of St. Clairs Shore, Mich. and Thomas (Dawn) Valerio of Hubbard, with whom she made her home; seven grandchildren, Rick Kale Jr., Nick Kale, Brian, Rachael, Laura, Brandon and Whitney Valerio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Valerio on Nov. 5, 1990; an infant son, Guy Paul Valerio; sisters, Angelina Cambert, Mary Jane Patton Perno and Philomena Latessa; and brothers, Arthur, Paul, Henry, Donald and Leonard Gaetano.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, before leaving for the church.
