Anthony Astranis, 91

BOARDMAN – Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church for Anthony Astranis, 91, who passed away Tuesday evening.

He was born Jan. 20, 1918, the son of the late Gust and Sophia (Thanos) Astranis.

Anthony was an Office Manager for Eichley Construction, retiring in 1971. He was a member at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

He is survived by his friend, Evelyn Leonardos of Oakland Gardens, N.Y..

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Peter Astranis.

Berneice Brown, 101

AUSTINTOWN – Berneice Brown, 101, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Briarfield at Ashley Circle.

Berneice was born July 19, 1908 to the late William and Lucretia Parker Jacob in Youngstown.

She worked for Harris Supermarket in Austintown in the meat department from 1955 to 1972. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (James) Griffiths of Austintown; her son, Robert (Shirley) Brown of Pleasant, Texas; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters; and five brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Girard City Cemetery Chapel.

Arrangements are being handled by the Blackstone Funeral Home.


Charles W. Carter II, 86

BRISTOLVILLE – Charles W. Carter II, 86, passed away at 10:36 p.m. at St Joseph Health Center in Warren.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1923 in Greene Township, the son of the late Charles W. and Martha (Armstrong) Carter.

A lifetime area resident, Charles served in the Marines during World War II. He retired from Copperweld Steel in 1984 after 25 years of service in the 35 in. mill. He owned and operated Carter Coal Company from 1949 to 1969.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Cary (Lee) Carter of Champion, Charles W. (Joy) Carter III of Kinsman, Barbara Denman of Bazetta and Robert (Gale) Carter of Warren; stepchildren, Sharon (Robert) Carlson of Johnston and Brian Kidwell of Vienna; a sister, Juanita Muir of Farmdale, 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera C. Craddock on April 19, 1990, and they were married Oct. 19, 1944; a brother, William “Bill” Carter; and several half brothers and half sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Masonic service at 4:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Park in Champion.

Arnold William Chambers, 84

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Arnold William Chambers, 84, ended his long courageous battle with multiple health issues on Aug. 19, 2009 at his residence.

He was born in Youngstown on Nov. 1, 1924, a son of Chester H. and Dora (Harrington) Chambers.

He attended Chaney High School, where his participation on the speech and debate teams earned him a degree of excellence in the National Forensic League. Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, Arnold served three and a half years in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he earned his BS and MS degrees (Cum Laude) from Kent Stae University and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Kappa Delta Pi honorary fraternities. Arnold taught at Liberty High School for 30 years, directed their drama productions for 25 years, advised the American Field Service Student Exchange Program, led the speech team, and taught driver’s education.

He served as district chairman of the Ohio High School Speech League, and helped to found the Liberty Education Association. In 1970, Arnold was the first teacher to use videotape to evaluate student teachers at Youngstown State University. He was a member of the Chuch Hill United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post No. 235 of Girard, a 25-year member of Vienna Grange, and a lifetime member of LEA, OEA, TEA and NEA.

Arnold is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean (Cramer) Chambers; children, Deborah (Thomas) Clark of Portland, Mich., Victoria (Dr. Robert) Kell of Jacksonville, N.C., Pamela (John) Lamb of Royal Oak, Mich.; grandchildren, Dr. Nathan (Jennifer) Clark, Bethany (Randy) Steinhaus, Dr. Erin (Bryce) Chaney, Jacob Garrett, Rachael Garrett, Katherine Lamb and Alexander Lamb; stepgrandchildren, Stephen (Erin) Kell, Colleen (Brian) Burgemaster and Karen Kell; five stepgreat-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Marguerite) Chambers of Mineral Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles R. Chambers.

He will be fondly remembered for his quick intelligence and sense of humor, and missed by all whose lives he touched.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m.at Church Hill United Methodist Church, where visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service and also on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like material contributions to be made to Hospice of the Valley, Humility of Mary Partners, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512 or Church Hill United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Jane E. Day, 72

CANFIELD – Jane E. Day, 72, passed away at 9:48 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at the Hospice House in Poland.

Jane was born Dec. 26, 1936 in Youngstown, the only daughter of the late Henry and Mary Ann (Boyd) Martin.

Jane worked for 20 years as a registered nurse and retired in 1999 as a nurse with MRDD.

Jane was a member of the Paradise United Church of Christ in Canfield and enjoyed reading and gardening.

Jane is survived by her husband of 52 years, Britton T. Day, whom she married May 11, 1957; two children, Michelle (Robert) Dellick of Lordstown and Gregg (Nancy) Day of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandsons, Nicholas and Ryan Day.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St. in Canfield.

Burial will follow at Pineview Memorial Park in Warren.

The family requests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of the Valley.

James Edward Fain, 68

POLAND – James Edward Fain, 68, died Aug. 19, 2009 at the Hospice House.

Mr. Fain was born Aug. 21, 1940 in Crooksville, a son of William Howard and Susie Ann Ponchak Fain.

He moved to Yulee, Fla. in 1980 and returned to Poland in 2003.

He was a 1959 graduate of Poland Seminary High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from Jan. of 1959 until March of 1963 aboard the USS Van Voorhis along side his older brother, William. His Navy training included fire fighting school.

Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Mr. Fain worked as a machinist for Commercial Shearing. He later worked as a long haul truck driver and most recently as a security guard, while he was living in Florida.

While in the Navy, he played in a band called The Gauchos. His hobbies included playing the guitar, watching wildlife, and he was a Cleveland Indians fan.

He leaves his mother, Susie Ann Fain of Poland; two children, Yvonne and Justin; five sisters, Sarah Coates of Bonita Springs, Fla., Dolores (Charles) Zins of Poland, Darlene Enke of Struthers, Diane (Lee) Ingold of Struthers and Connie Mount of Poland; two brothers, Larry (Linda) Fain of North Lima and Roger (Mary Jane) Fain of Port Orange, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Henry Fain.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where family and friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Rudy Leo Hamrock, 86

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be held at noon at the Wasko Funeral Home and at 12:30 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church, with Father Paul Tobin officiating, for Rudy Leo Hamrock, 86, formerly of Lowellville, who passed away Monday morning at his home.

Rudy was born Dec. 10, 1922 in Youngstown, the son of John M. and Helen Waschak Hamrock and was a lifelong area resident of Lowellville.

He was a 1941 graduate of Scienceville High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre under General Douglas MacArthur in the headquarters and information department.

He was a member of the church and the Legion of Mary. Rudy spent his career in the shipping department at Blooming Mill for the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co., retiring in 1977.

Although Rudy never married, he played a significant role in the lives of his many nieces and nephews. Rudy always showed a loving sense of family. He was a steadfast presence in good times and in bad. He could always be counted on to lend a helpful hand, a sympathetic ear, a kind word or a humorous remark at just the right moment. Generous, loving and a constant presence, Rudy will be deeply missed by all of those whose lives he so sweetly touched.

Rudy leaves to cherish his memory his younger sister, Mary Rose Tomko of Columbus, as well as a number of nephews, great-nephews, nieces and great-nieces, who are honored to have known him and been a part of his life and who will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers, Steven, John, Joseph, Alfred, Thomas, James, Andrew and Edward Hamrock; and three sisters, Alice Yatsco, Ann Lapin and Agnes Hovanes.

The Hamrock family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon.


Marilyn E. Hurajt, 72

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Saint Luke Church, celebrated by Father Joseph Fata, for Marilyn E. Hurajt, 72, who passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Hurajt was born July 11, 1937 in Youngstown, a daughter of Emory Chester and Etta Marian Merchant Walton.

Marilyn lived in Youngstown all of her life, except for a few years in Manhattan, Kan., while her husband was serving in the military.

She was a 1955 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and had worked as a teller at various banks for over 20 years.

Marilyn was a member of St. Luke Church.

She was a terrific mother, housewife and a good cook.

She was the loving wife to Stephen Edward Hurajt, whom she married June 30, 1956 and died Dec. 24, 1990.

Marilyn was the loving mother to three children, Stephen Mark Hurajt of Youngstown, Ginger Ann Hurajt and her husband, George Medalinkas of Haverhill, Mass. and Vern Michael Hurajt of Youngstown. She also leaves two sisters, Vivian Welling and her husband, Richard of Okeechobee, Fla. and Marjorie Fernandez and her husband, Pedro of Lansing, Mich.; and a brother, Richard Walton and his wife, Myra of Michigan.

Donald E. Hutchison, 82

BOARDMAN – There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Boardman United Methodist Church, celebrated by Pastor Ash Welch, for Donald E. Hutchison, 82, who passed away Monday at his residence.

Mr. Hutchison was born Dec. 30, 1926 in Chesapeake, a son of John M. and Martha Evans Hutchison and was a resident of this area for 43 years.

He was a high school graduate and attended The Ohio State University. Don retired from sales with the Addressograph Multigraph Company.

Don was a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church and the Boardman Rotary. He loved flying.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving with the occupation forces in Tokyo from 1944 to 1948.

His wife, the former Jane Julian, whom he married Dec. 30, 1948, died Sept. 11, 1995.

He leaves a son, Paul W. Hutchison of Boardman; a daughter, Joan L. (Timothy) Dailey of Boardman; a sister, Jeanne Ann Leete of Huntington, W.Va.; a brother, John (Marie) Hutchison of Thousand Oak, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Emmie (Michael) Evans, Jeremy Hutchison, Julie (Robert) Breitenstein and Ralph Hutchison.

John Kowal, 96

BOARDMAN – Services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Fox Funeral Home and a 10 a.m. at Saint Charles Church for John Kowal, 96, who passed away Wednesday morning at Hampton Woods in Poland.

John was born July 31, 1913 in Youngstown, a son of Panko and Anna Koval and was a lifelong area resident.

John was a foreman at L. Hollander Co., where he retired in 1978 and was a member of the (UFCW) United Food and Commercial Workers Union. He was a Army veteran, serving during World War II, where he received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with seven Bronze Stars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ryzner, whom he married Sept. 18, 1948 and who died Jan. 11, 2002.

John will be sadly missed by his three daughters, Deborah M. (John) Carbone of New Castle, Pa., Karen A. (Jess) Seddon of Aurora and Kathy L. (John) Soloski of Boardman; a brother, Steve Kowal of Berlin Center; a sister, Rose Olsen of Bronx, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. John was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Jean Kowal;; a sister, Mary George; three brothers, Matthew Kowal, Joseph Kowal and Paul Kowal; and a grandson, Corey Seddon.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Kimberlee Ann Kuzma, 46

CAMPBELL – Kimberlee Ann Kuzma, 46, was born on May 28, 1963, and passed away on Aug. 8, 2009.

She was the daughter of Carol A. Houy and Frank Kuzma.

She was the beloved mother to Ashelee Pope, Christopher Pope and Joseph Schrieber. She is survived by her siblings, Christopher Kuzma, Frank Kuzma, Rebekah Houy and Nicole Kuzma.

Memorial services will be held at St. Johns Catholic Church, 159 Reed Ave. in Campbell on Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at 10 a.m , followed by a fellowship gathering shortly after the service.

We will always remember her beautiful smile, her crazy personality, her kind heart, and dedication to friends and family. Being with her created everlasting memories, and her spirit will live on forever in our hearts.


Philip Raymond Lyle, 59

YOUNGSTOWN – Philip Raymond Lyle, 59, died Monday, Aug. 10, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Philip was born May 11, 1950 in Youngstown, a son of the late Ray and Sarah Hagerty Lyle.

He was a 1968 graduate of Ursuline High School and received his Masters in Education from Kent State University.

Philip worked as a Lineman for AT&T and then as a substitute teacher for both the Philadelphia City Schools and Youngstown City Schools. Philip was a member of Mensa.

Philip leaves his sister, Sheilah (Raymond) Prest of Canfield; half sister, Linda Rae of Cleveland Heights; brother, David Lyle of Los Angeles; and his nephew, Jeffrey Prest.

Willie Lee “Dottie” Mosko, 80

NEW SPRINGFIELD - Willie Lee “Dottie” Mosko, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, daughters and grandchildren on Monday, Aug. 17, 2009 at St Elizabeth Health Center.

Dottie was born Dec. 28, 1928 in Falls Mills, Va., the daughter of the late Leonard Belcher and Susie Prater.

She graduated from St Luke’s School of Nursing in Bluefield, W.Va. in 1949 and moved to New Springfield in 1953. She worked as an RN for Dr. Jay Chuck in New Middletown from 1963 to 1973 and then for Dr. Doug Walsh, retiring in 1978. She was proud and passionate about her nursing career, especially recalling the memories of going house to house delivering Amish babies.

She was married for 59 joyful years to Raymond Mosko, who was deeply in love with her. They were married Nov. 22, 1950.

She enjoyed sleeping in while her early bird husband prepared her breakfast each morning and never left her side as she spent the last few weeks at Greenbriar Rehabilitation facility, yet somehow finding a way to sneak down to Mountaineer with her daughters and granddaughters. She was an avid canner with the best homemade jams, picking her own berries and passing the tradition down to her daughters and granddaughter. Always an incredible cook, there was more than enough for whomever would stop by without a moments notice.

She was the happiest when her children would just stop by and raid the kitchen hoping there was a pot of chicken and dumplings on the stove and a pan of cornbread in the oven.

Dottie was a member of the Springfield Emmanuel Lutheran Church, where she served as the Executive Director of the Springfield Township Food Pantry for 25 years. Dottie was passionate about helping those less fortunate than her while always trying to recruit volunteers to help bring the truck loads of food back to the church. “Thank you Dave Miller for all of your help, love and support.”

She loved fishing, cheering on her boys (Cleveland Cavaliers), and watching the hummingbirds from her back deck while enjoying her family and friends who visited daily.

She leaves behind to hold on to her memories her husband, Raymond; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn (Raul) Burbano of Kettering and Mrs. Bitsy (Chappie) Bair of Poland; and five grandchildren, Mrs. Kristin (John) Masucci of Poland, Mrs. Susie (Chad) McGarry of Wichita, Kan., Dr. Booker T. (Holly) Bair of Canfield, Mrs. Mikki (Brian) Mihok of Kettering and Mr. Tucker Bair of Pittsburgh. She also leaves to cherish her memory, the five loves of her life, her great-grandchildren, whom were a daily part of her life, Sydney and Sammie Masucci, Mikayla Mihok and Brinkley and Tyce Bair. She also leaves a brother, Carl Sheets of Warren.

The family would like to express their sincerest love to Bitsy for her devotion, dedication, sleepless nights and for Nanny’s never ending requests for Chalupas.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at St. John Lutheran Church in Petersburg. There will be a memorial service immediately following.

Darell L. “Buck” Roberts, 69

YOUNGSTOWN – Darell L. “Buck” Roberts, 69, formerly of Beaver Falls, Pa., died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

He was born on March 21, 1940 in New Eagle, Pa., the son of Hilda Breakwell Roberts of Beaver Falls and the late Clarence J. “Clinks” Roberts.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

The A.D. Campbell Funeral Home Inc. in Beaver Falls is in charge of the arrangements.


Veronica E. Roby, 56


AUSTINTOWN – Services will be noon Saturday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, celebrated by Pastor Duffy Roberts, for Veronica E. Roby, 56, who passed away Wednesday morning at the Hospice House.

Veronica was born April 9, 1953, in Columbia, S.C. and lived the Youngstown area most of her life. She was the daughter of Hiram and Lila Mae Root Ringer. 

She was a 1971 graduate of Liberty High School and was self-employed as a delivery person for The Youngstown Vindicator.

She leaves a daughter, Suzanne (Joe) LaRocca of Austintown; two sons, Michael (Amanda) Roby of Youngstown and Calvin (Amanda) Roby Jr. of Austintown; four sisters, Gladys Dunn, Pam Bass, Gloria Roberts and Emma Caldwell, all of Columbia; a brother, Ray Ringer of Columbia; and eight grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Calvin Roby Sr. and three brothers, Zook Ringer, Harry Ringer and Earl Ringer.

Rita Marie Russo, 84

BOARDMAN – Rita Marie Russo, 84, passed away on Aug. 17, 2009 with her family at her side from an undiagnosed illness.

Rita was born Nov. 19, 1924 in Girard, the daughter of Pat and Viola Knott Modarelli.

She married the love of her life, Frank Russo on Feb. 17, 1953 at Saint Patrick Church on Oak Hill Ave. in Youngstown. She had been a member of the church for 84 years. Frank passed away Sept. 12, 1994 and will never be forgotten.

Rita was a homemaker and the best mother and nana a family could ever pray for. She gave us enough love to last two lifetimes She dedicated her life to her family.

Grieving her loss are her children, Frank (Cindi) Russo, Lolly (George) Kordic and Manny Russo; friend and sister-in-law, Connie Russo; and the joys of her life, Vince, Geno, Frankie and Athena, her grandchildren. They were blessed to have her as their nana.

She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony Russo.

“Rest in peace Mom, you will forever live in our hearts.”

Jane G. Scanlon, 75

CANFIELD – Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11a.m. at the Canfield United Methodist Church for Jane G. Scanlon, 75, who passed away Tuesday morning at Hospice House.

Mrs. Scanlon was born July 7, 1934 in Sharon, Pa., a daughter of August A. and Della R. Riley Sonk. Moving to Boardman in 1970. Then on to Fairfield Glade, Tenn. in 1994 and finally back to Canfield, in 2005.

She graduated from Brookfield High School in 1952 and St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in 1956.

She had been a Registered Nurse at Forum Health North Side Hospital for eight years.

She went back to school at Youngstown State University to receive her Bachelors degree in Elementary Education and after a few more years received her Masters degree in Counseling. Jane retired in 1994 after 24 years with Boardman Local Schools.

Jane was a member of the church, the Canfield Women’s Society Group and was a Hospice volunteer. Jane and Pat enjoyed their travels throughout the world.

Surviving her is her husband, James P. Scanlon, whom she married July 28, 1956; two daughters, Amy L. (Jeff) Miller of Duluth,Ga. and Lori J. (T.J.) Eisenbraun of Boardman; and a son, Craig P. Scanlon of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Carol Lynn (Ron) Scheid of Barnstable, Mass.; and six grandchildren, Jaclyn, Sara, Kayla, Kim, Doug and Robin; and one great-granddaughter, McKenzie.

John C. Simerlink, 97

BOARDMAN – Services will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers for John C. Simerlink, 97, who passed away Aug. 18, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

John was born July 24, 1912. He was one of seven sons born to the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Janitor) Simerlink, who also had three daughters that passed away at an early age.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria (Wrona) in 1983; and brothers, Andrew, Mitchell, George, Thomas and James Simerlink.

Survivors include sons, John P. (Clara) of Dayton and Richard E. (Vera) of Poland; grandchildren, Deborah Simerlink, Daniel Simerlink (Ann), Gregory Simerlink (Cindy), Joan Geer (Sean) and Laura Simerlink; and great-grandchildren, Nathan, Ryan, Lauren, John, Jamie and Dominic. Also surviving is one brother, David Simerlink.

John was with the Youngstown Police Department for 27 years, retiring in 1972. He was a turnkey for 18 years and was called “The Old Bull of the Woods” by fellow policemen.

Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in Struthers. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery.
