Frank L. Brown Jr., 62

AUSTINTOWN - There will be funeral services at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 23, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman, for Frank L. Brown Jr., 62, who passed away Thursday, Aug. 20 at his home.

Frank was born April 17, 1947, in Kittanning, Pa., the son of Frank L. Sr. and Dorothy Brown.

He was an independent truck driver and served his country during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving companion, Julia Cianciola, who passed away Aug. 9, 2009.

Frank will be remembered by Julia’s three children, Sam (Joan) Cianciola, Patricia Cianciola and Debra Gianfrancesco, all of Youngstown, Teddy and Brittany, whom he helped raise and who affectionately called him Papa; Julia’s four grandchildren, Lisa Cianciola, Sam Cianciola Jr., Rena Cianciola and Pam Jones; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Julian, Dominique, and Patrice; four great-great-grandchildren; his four sisters, Patricia (Ed) Anderson, Arlene (Gene) Sloan, and Lynn (Daryl) Denney, all of Tennessee, and Pamela (Richard) Misel of Minnesota; two brothers, Charles (Mikki) Brown of Maryland and Richard (Sharyl) Brown of Mineral Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Robert P. “Bob” Carney, 80

BOARDMAN – Memorial services will be held in Palm Harbor, Fla., where immediate family members will meet on Aug. 29, for Robert P. “Bob” Carney, 80, who passed away at his home on Aug. 9, 2009.

Robert was born Aug. 22, 1928 in Youngstown, the son of Albert Carney and Anna Hanley Carney.

He was the owner and operator of Carney Painting Company for many years in Youngstown, prior to moving to Texas in 1977, where he established another successful paint company, which he retained until retirement. Robert had residences both in Boardman and Clearwater, Fla.

His wife, the former Marily Gaps, whom he married in 1951, passed away in August of 1996.

Robert leaves one daughter, Vivian Carney Bowen (James); and two sons, Ronald and Thomas (Jacqueline), all of Texas. He is also survived by siblings, Marie Martin of California, Dolores Pleger of Austintown, Loretta Bratton of Boardman, Theresa Carney of Oregon, Dr. Thomas Carney of Texas and Carol LoGuidice of Mexico; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert, who died in 2007; siblings, two brothers, Joseph A, Carney and Vincent B. Carney; and two sisters, Regina Carney McAuliffe and Alberta Carney Duby.

Robert leaves many friends and relatives in Ohio, Texas and Florida.

A devoted Catholic, he attended daily Mass until he was no longer physically able to continue. An outgoing, friendly person, he will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Local relatives attended a memorial Mass for Bob on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009.

“May he rest in peace.”

OLMSTED FALLS – Services will be Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Ms. Tiffany Nichole Clark, 24, formerly of Youngstown, who entered her sunset on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009.

Rev. Henry Clinkscale Jr., 84

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church for Rev. Henry Clinkscale Jr., 84, who entered Heaven’s eternal gates Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Rev. Clinkscale was born March 14, 1925, in Youngstown, a son of Henry Sr. and Mattie Anderson Clinkscale.

He attended Youngstown City Schools and continued education classes at Youngstown State University, attended Malone College in Canton, the Moody Bible College and graduated after four years at the Central Bible College in Cleveland.

He was a member and served as an ordained deacon at the New Bethel Baptist Church and was called into the ministry in 1965. He was licensed to preach by the New Bethel Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. Lonnie A. Simon. He also served as assistant pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Alfred Ward.

In 1967, Pastor Clinkscale was called to pastor the Beulah Baptist Church, and in September of 1969, was called to pastor the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully for 37 years, retiring March 14, 2008.

Pastor Clinkscale was a member of the Harvest Lodge No. 26, the N.A.A.C.P., past president of the Baptist Pastor’s Council, past treasurer of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, and served as a trustee of District 27, S.O.A.R., and the Youngstown District Investment Club.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his wife of 65 years, the former Odessa Harris, whom he married Sept. 10, 1944; four daughters, Darnell Louise (James) Williams of Cleveland, Miss., and Rose Ann Clinkscale, Sandra Jean Harden and Judith Elaine Paul, all of Youngstown; eight grandchildren, Dwayne Antoine Henry Williams of Cleveland, Miss., Earnest Deright Paul Jr. of San Bernardino, Calif., Rodney Lamar (Delova) Williams of Ellenwood, Ga. and Edward Robert Harden Jr. and Clinton Sterling Harden, both of Youngstown, Staacie Michelle Harden of Cleveland, Michael James Harden of Glenville, W.Va. and Chomney Lynette Williams of Jackson, Miss.; 11 great-grandchildren , Vitina Curb, Dwayne McKnight, Duval Davis, Deon Harrington, Rodney Lamar Williams Jr., Destiny Williams, Janyla Scott, Elijah Harden, Ethan Harden, Michael Harden II and Kaydence Elaine Paul; two brothers, Albert and Jeff Clinkscale, both of Youngstown; three sisters, Alberta Toney, Hattie Woods and Mattie Tate, all of Youngstown; and a host of relatives, church family and friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Terrell Lynette Clinkscale; two sisters, Rosabelle Dubose and Mary Bess; one brother, Theodore “Bully” Clinkscale; and a great-grandson, Henry Paul.

Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

John F. Head, 76

 FORT MYERS BEACH, FLA. – John F. Head, 76, passed away Aug. 10, with his wife by his side.

He was born on June 7, 1933 in Roanoke, Ala., the son of Tom L. and Cora Head.

He served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired General Motors executive at the Lordstown (Ohio) Assembly Plant and moved to Fort Myers Beach in 1988.

He was an avid golfer with three hole-in-ones. He was a member of the Fort Myers Beach Moose Lodge and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta; son John (Julie) Head of Frisco, N.C.; a daughter, Jill (Mike) Kolasar of Cuyahoga Falls; and five grandchildren.

 A private service was held Friday, Aug. 14.

Laura M. Holisky, 81

LEETONIA – Laura M. Holisky, 81, of Columbia Street, died Saturday morning at the St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center following a brief illness.

Laura was born July 13, 1928, in Columbiana, a daughter of the late John and Gertrude Bishop Hough, and had lived in this area all of her life.

She was a loving mother and wife and had also worked at Heck’s Restaurant and Theron’s Country Store, both of Columbiana. An avid card player, she loved to camp, especially at Atwood Lake, Timashamie and Chaparral Campgrounds.

Her husband, John R. Holisky, whom she married Oct. 4, 1947, died June 18, 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Rich) Oxley of Leetonia; five sons, Duke Holisky of Leetonia, David (LuAnn) Holisky of Columbiana, Vinnie (Amy) Holisky of Greenford, Dennis (Pam) Holisky of Poland, and Scott (Bridget) Holisky of Lancaster, Pa.; five sisters, Esther (Richard) Gaither of Columbus, Faye Morrison of Sarasota, Fla., Gloria Richards of Tampa, Fla., Charlotte (Robert) Battle of Akron, and Cathy Hahner of Yorba Linda, Calif.; three brothers, Walter (Mary) Hough of Salem, Jim Hough of Columbiana, and Chuck (Norma) Hough of Valdosta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Melissa (Matt) Mellott, Laura Lynn Oxley, Mindy (Steve) Houlette, Katie and Samantha Holisky, Kellen, Rachael, and Andrew Holisky, Dennis Jr. and Chelsea Holisky, and Kourtney Holisky; three stepgrandchildren, Bill, Josh and Cody Hiznay; and five great-grandchildren, Alexa, Tyler, and Peyton Mellott and Sefton and Ashten Houlette.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Daniel Holisky; a sister, Tillie Lopshansky; and a brother, Jack Hough.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no services.

The family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center for their care and compassion.

Ross Dean Hunter, 50

JOHNSTOWN, PA. – Ross Dean Hunter, 50, formerly of Youngstown, died Aug. 13, at home.

He was born July 26, 1959 in Altoona, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack B. Hunter, and paternal and maternal grandparents.

He is survived by his mother, Dolores Cusamano; stepmother Yvonne Hunter; daughters Theresa and Paige; brothers Chuck (Cindy), Paul (Sandy) and John; sisters Monica (Carmen), Christine (John), Scarlett (John), Maria, Caroline (Luis), Jeanette (Wally), Jackie, and Toni (Todd); and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was a former employee of Youngstown Window Cleaning. He served in the U.S. Army.

A memorial service will be held at the Fairview Arts and Outreach Center, 4220 Youngstown-Poland Road, on Monday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m.


Marilyn E. Hurajt, 72

YOUNGSTOWN – There will be a memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Saint Luke Church, celebrated by Father Joseph Fata, for Marilyn E. Hurajt, 72, who passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Hurajt was born July 11, 1937 in Youngstown, a daughter of Emory Chester and Etta Marian Merchant Walton.

Marilyn lived in Youngstown all of her life, except for a few years in Manhattan, Kan., while her husband was serving in the military.

She was a 1955 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and had worked as a teller at various banks for over 20 years.

Marilyn was a member of St. Luke Church.

She was a terrific mother, housewife and a good cook.

She was the loving wife to Stephen Edward Hurajt, whom she married June 30, 1956, and died Dec. 24, 1990.

Marilyn was the loving mother to three children, Stephen Mark Hurajt of Youngstown, Ginger Ann Hurajt and husband George Medalinkas of Haverhill, Mass., and Vern Michael Hurajt of Youngstown. She also leaves two sisters, Vivian Welling and husband Richard of Okeechobee, Fla., and Marjorie Fernandez and husband Pedro of Lansing, Mich.; and a brother, Richard Walton and wife Myra of Michigan.

Anna Marie Gustafson Martindale, 94

TUCSON, ARIZ. – Private graveside services were held for Mrs. Howard J. Martindale, 94, formerly of New Middletown, who died in her sleep at home in Tucson.

She was born April 23, 1915 at home on Erie Street, in the section of Youngstown called Little Sweden. Her parents were Charles and Marie Anderson Gustafson.

She graduated from South High School, where she was a cheerleader and class officer. She worked summers for the Strouss family, teaching the children swimming, tennis, volleyball and other physical activities.

On April 25, 1936, she married Howard Johnson Martindale of Warren , Pa.

From birth, she was a member of the Evangel Baptist Church (which was founded by her great uncle, J.P. Westerberg), where she taught Sunday school, chaired the finance committee and several women’s committees. She was a founding member of Fortnitely III, The Marion B. Roth Club. She was president of the Boardman Schools PTA, and was involved in numerous charitable drives and fund raisers.

As the longtime manager of the Ohio Edison Credit Union, she also worked as an accountant for Uniroyal and was the manager of the Youngstown Federated Clubs office. Upon retirement, the Martindales moved to Catawba Island, near Port Clinton in Ohio.

Not only was she an outstanding cook and party planner, she was an avid fisherman, noted for getting the big catch on most outings. They moved to New Middletown in 1977, and she spent the last 15 years wintering in Tucson, moving there in 2006.

She leaves her son, Tom (retired Youngstown State University administrator) and wife Carolyn (a former Vindicator reporter and YSU professor) and a granddaughter, Holly Welton, all of Tucson; a grandson, Tom H. II of Irvine, Calif.; a sister, Donna Jean Whitenack of Evansville, Ind.; two brothers, Kenneth Birath of New Middletown and John (Jack) Birath of Boardman; and an uncle, Homer Anderson of North Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, John Albin Birath; her husband, Howard; a daughter, Ann; her brothers, Roger, Ralph and Robert Gustafson and Louis, Carl and Donald Birath; and two sisters, Ethel Baker and Ellen Lester.

Anthony J. Massaro, 78

NEW CASTLE, PA. – Anthony J. Massaro, 78, of 110 Oticon Drive, passed away peacefully at Jameson Hospital in New Castle on Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at 9:42 a.m. following an extended illness.

Mr. Massaro was born June 18, 1931, in Youngstown, the son of Martha Sabelli and Anthony Daniel Massaro Sr.

He graduated from Youngstown East High School in 1949. He matriculated to Youngstown College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1953. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University in 1957.

“Tony,” as he was known by his family and friends, retired from Eli Lilly & Company in 1995 after a 35 year career. At Eli Lilly, Tony maintained his pharmaceutical license and had a prestigious career in pharmaceutical sales. He won multiple awards for sales volume, and brought a personal approach that his clients appreciated. He was a member of the Mary Mother of Hope Parish. He enjoyed college football and was a fan of both Notre Dame and his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. He took joy in a good round of golf at the Lake Club with his F Troop buddies and he also enjoyed discussing politics with his McDonald breakfast club. Tony was also known to bring out his accordion from time to time.

His wife of 50 years, the former Joanne Kellish, whom he married Nov. 27, 1958, in Struthers, survives at the residence. Also surviving are his three daughters, Marilyn Hartman and husband Chris of Medina, Jean Massaro of Pittsburgh and Elizabeth Stewart and husband Jeff of Monroe, Mich.; and his son, Paul Massaro and wife Brigid of Delafield, Wis.; and seven grandchildren, Marissa, Shauna and Andrew Hartman, Laura and Evan Stewart and Brian and Aidan Massaro. He is also survived by his sister, Loretta Massaro of Youngstown.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruth Naomi McMillen, 94

“Together Again”

POLAND – Services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown for Ruth Naomi McMillen, 94, of the Sunrise Assisted Living, formerly of Springfield Road in Poland, who passed away Friday afternoon.

Ruth was born Sept. 4, 1914, in New Springfield, a daughter of Merl and Tressa Burkey Seidner. She lived in the area her whole life.

During World War II she worked at the Truscon Steel Corporation. She was a member of the Old Springfield United Church of Christ and also the church’s Booster Sunday School, the Bible Study Club and the Fellowship Club.

Ruth married Arthur Dean McMillen June 20, 1936, and he passed away May 11, 1994.

She leaves one sister, Julia Leipply of Lake Wales, Fla., and also several nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers, Charles, Everett, Roy, Arthur and Harry Seidner; and two sisters, Doris Redman and Iva Biss.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown and one hour before the service at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Pastor Dale Crum will have the service.

Jack T. Mullen, 81

PINELLAS PARK, FLA. – Jack T. Mullen, 81, formerly of North Lima, died Aug. 14, 2009.

Jack was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps before becoming a self-employed contractor and later owning and managing the Maplecroft Mobile Home Park in North Lima. He was an active lifetime member of the Youngstown Shrine Club.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Janice of Florida; two sons, Gary (Sandy) Mullen of West Lawn, Pa. and Ronald (Jackie) Mullen of Canfield; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vonnette Mullen.

A military funeral service with a 21 gun salute and a tribute given by the Shrine Club will be on Aug. 21, 2009 at the Gee and Sorenson Funeral Services in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to the Youngstown Shrine Club, 1735 W. South Range Road in North Lima.


Joseph Nicolli, 90

BOARDMAN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown, with the Rev. Charles Poore officiating, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service held at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman, for Joseph Nicolli, 90, who peacefully passed away on Wednesday afternoon with his precious family by his side.

Joseph will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born July 2, 1919, in Pony Mine, Pa., and moved to the Youngstown area as a young child. He was the son of Joseph and Marie Nicolli.

Joseph was employed with General Fireproofing as a millright for over 40 years and retired in 1981.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, and when Joe was younger, he was an amazing boxer who almost became a professional.

Joseph enjoyed bowling and playing the accordion, along with being an avid sports fan. He had a great love for people and always enjoyed when they were around.

He leaves behind to hold on to his memories his wife of over 68 years, the former LaVerne Acitelli, whom he married Sept. 30, 1940; three children, Joette D’Amico of Mineral Ridge and Joseph (Marjean) Nicolli and Cheryl (Robert) Wagner, both of Canfield; six grandchildren, Nick D’Amico, Joe (Jana) D’Amico, Lisa (Jeffrey) Patrone, Jennifer (Matt) Combs, Chrissy (David) Mullane and Mandy (Steve) Jenkins, and 13 great-grandchildren, Nicky, Anthony, Andrew, Brett, Baylee, Samantha, Joey, Matthias, Christian, Troy, Zachary, Mikayla, and Mikenze.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Santina Herko; and three brothers, Russell, Leo and Arthur Nicolli.

Friends may call on Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.

Dianne Lynn Razo, 52

POLAND – Dianne Lynn Razo, 52, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday morning, Aug. 22, 2009, at her residence, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Razo was born June 26, 1957, in Salem, a daughter of William and Barbara Codner Snow.

She was a 1975 graduate of South Range High School. Mrs. Razo previously worked for St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana as an STNA. She then attended the Hannah E. Mullins School of Nursing in Salem and received her LPN degree. She was working as an LPN at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown up until her illness.

Mrs. Razo was a member of the Victory Christian Center in Columbiana.

She leaves her parents, William and Barbara Snow of North Lima; her husband, Mark Razo, whom she married Jan. 13, 1993; two daughters, Beverly James of Canton and Anna (Zachary) Frazzini of New Middletown; stepdaughter Leanna Razo of Youngstown; stepson Mark A. Razo of Salem; brother Kevin Snow of Akron; a sister, Barbara Snow II of North Lima; and seven grandchildren, Collin Razo, Mia Frazzini, Jared Clark, Sophia Smith, Matthew and Madison James and Zachary Razo.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Victory Christian Center, 350 Market St. in Columbiana on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m.

Carolee “Carol” Scola, 72

AUSTINTOWN – Carolee “Carol” Scola, 72, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at her home.

Carol was born July 14, 1937, in Ravenswood, W.Va., the daughter of the late Wilbur Vensin and Junna May (Miller) Sallaz.

Carol was a graduate of South Park High School.

A homemaker, Carol was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Carol will be remembered by her daughter, Lisa Scola of Austintown; sisters Ladonna M. Oleksy of Orchard Park, N.Y., and Jacqueline Sallaz of Angola, N.Y.; and grandchildren Zackary, Mikayla and John Gmitter, all of Austintown.

Besides her parents, Carol was preceded in death by a brother, Milford Sallaz, and a sister, Naomi O’Donnall.

Hadasa R. Smith, 89

YOUNGSTOWN – Graveside services were held in Saddle Brook, N.J., on Sunday, Aug. 16, for Hadasa R. Smith, 89, who passed away Thursday, Aug. 13, at Heritage Manor in Youngstown.

Mrs. Smith was born Hadasa Feit Oct. 5, 1919 in Nisko, Poland, a daughter of Nuchim and Itta Feit. Her family survived World War II in a labor camp in Siberia, as refugees in the Soviet Union. After the war, she was interned at the Displaced Persons Camp in Dachau, Germany, where she married Paul (Szmuszkiewicz) Smith in 1950.

The family emigrated to the United States in 1951, entering through Ellis Island and settling in Passaic, N.J. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States of American in 1957. She was a lifelong member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union, and was employed at Philco. She retired to Brick, N.J., in 1979 and moved to Levy Gardens in Youngstown in 2004.

She enjoyed sewing, baking, cooking, reading and was fluent in six languages. She was a member of the Temple El Emeth in Youngstown and its’ sisterhood, and a lifelong member of Hadassah, the Jewish Women’s Zionist Organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on July 12, 1969; her brother, Getzel; and her parents, who had emigrated to Israel.

She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Leonard) Kanterman of Warren and Ruth (Robert) Fierstien of Lakewood, N.J.; and three grandchildren, Paul Kanterman of Waldorf, Md., Jill (Michael) Moore of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jeremy (Ilana) Fierstien of Chicago. She is also survived by her sister, Esther Boruchowicz of Herzliya and her bother, Moshe (Bella) Payt of Ramat HaSharon, both of Israel.

Stephen E. Sova, 82

COLUMBUS – Stephen E. Sova, 82, passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at his residence.

He was a longtime member of St. Timothy Church and graduated from The Ohio State University in 1953, with a degree in architecture. He was a member of Alpha Rho Chi Fraternity, Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the American Institute of Architects.

Stephen retired from Dan A. Carmichael Architect and was an active member of the Central Ohio Free Flying Club, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He enjoyed his family, his work and his hobbies of travel, photography, fishing, building and flying model airplanes.

He was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Mary Sova; brothers Michael, John and Joseph; and granddaughter Anne Marie Brundage.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene Sova; children Irene (William) Brundage, Catherine Sova and Stephen A. (Renee) Sova; grandchildren Theresa and Elizabeth Brundage and Matthew Sova; sister Mary Kondas; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Monday 4 to 8 p.m. at the Egan-Ryan Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, 4661 Kenny Road (At Godown between Henderson and Reed Roads).

A vigil service will be on Monday at 4:30 p.m..

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy Church, 1088 Thomas Lane in Columbus.

There will be a burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

John P. Vulanich, 80

NILES – John P. Vulanich, 80, of 1825 Roosevelt Ave., died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at his residence.

He was born March 28, 1929, in Youngstown, the son of Matthew and Katherine Preglar Vulanich.

John was a 1947 graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School and was employed for two years as a welder at U.S. Steel, McDonald Works.

On Feb. 19, 1951, John joined the U.S. Army, where he served for two years as a corporal during the Korean War. He was a welder stationed in France and in various United States Bases, having worked on bridges and girders.

After his discharge from the Army, he was employed as an officer in The Niles Police Department for 25 years before retiring in July of 1983. After his retirement, he was a custodian for the Niles City School district for 13 years and also was a car dealer trade runner at Stivers Car Dealership.

John was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Niles, the Niles Fraternal Order of Police No. 27, and St. George’s Croatian Home Lodge No. 66, and he was currently on The Niles Civil Service and The Planning and Zoning Commission.

He enjoyed cars, car auctions, dancing, Bluegrass and Polka Music.

John, who lived for his children and grandchildren, will be deeply missed by his wife, Connie Guacci Vulanich, whom he married May 2, 1953; two sons, Matthew Vulanich and wife Nova of Dublin, Ohio, and John A. Vulanich and wife Betsy of Noblesville, Ind.; a brother, Steve Vulanich of Youngstown; two sisters, Kathleen Reedy and husband Arthur of Westfield Center, Ohio, and Helen Vari and husband Frank of Rootstown, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, Madeline and Tim.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Josephine Vulanich.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at The Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles, where The Mt. Carmel Bereavement Ministry and The Niles Fraternal Order of Police will conduct prayers at 7:30 p.m..

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niles, with Fr. Larry Frient officiating, preceded by a 9 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery where John will be honored for his military service by The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.

Arrangements are being handled by The Joseph Rossi & Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

Robert T. Zack Sr., 76

BOARDMAN – There will be funeral services 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Youngstown, with the Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Cariglio celebrating, for Robert T. Zack Sr., 76, who passed away peacefully Friday, Aug. 21 at his home.

Bob was born June 7, 1933, in Youngstown, the son of Frank and Antoinette (Janis) Zaklukiewicz.

He was employed at United Paper Company and Borden’s Dairy as a truck driver. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

In 1953, Bob graduated from South High School where he excelled at baseball, basketball and football and was named All-City Fullback in 1952. He went on to play baseball, basketball and football for the U.S. Marine Corps. and U.S. Navy when he honorably served his country during the Korean Conflict. Bob also played AA Baseball for Anthony Fence and Home Club and was inducted into the Youngstown Old-Timers Baseball Hall of Fame on May 4, 1997.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Catherine Girardi, whom he married 53 years ago on Aug. 18, 1956; his two daughters, Debbie (Scott) Brown and Sherry (Sean) Holden, all of Lebanon; three sons, Bob (Valerie) Zack Jr. of Beaver Creek, Frank (Terry) Zack of Sugar Creek Township, and Ron (Lynn) Zack of Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Danielle, and Joseph Zack, Scotty Brown, Dana and Kristen Zack, and Meghann Holden; his sister, Sonia Janik of Columbia, S.C.; his four sisters-in-law, Margaret Zack, Jeanne Girardi, Carole Girardi, and Livia Marinelli; and a brother-in-law, Carmen Girardi.

Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his seven brothers, Andrew, Carl, Edward, John, Henry, Joseph, and Paul Zack; and three sisters, Lottie Zaklukiewicz, Ann Parnell, and Rose Chupek.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Avenue in Boardman, when the Tri-State Marine Corps League Detachment 494 will hold a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Bob will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Tri-State Marine Corps League Detachment 494 and the U.S. Marines.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Hospice of the Valley, especially Lesley Groubert, for her care of Bob and to the Rev. Msgr. Michael Cariglio for his prayers and comfort.
