Joseph Bednar, 88
GAINESVILLE, FLA. There will be a memorial Mass Monday, Aug. 31, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers for Joseph Bednar, 88, formerly of Struthers, who died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at his residence in Gainesville after a long illness.
He was born March 16, 1921, in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Mary Cebula Bednar.
Joseph was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II. He was employed as a warehouseman at The Tamarkin Co., retiring in 1984.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, its Altar & Rosary Society, its Seniors Group, the Jednota Branch No. 260, AARP, the Teamsters Local 377 and the VFW Post No. 3538.
He is survived by a son, Richard J. (Maggie) Bednar Sr.; a sister, Ann Schlosser of Struthers; four grandsons, Richard J. (Jessica) Bednar Jr., Jeffrey J. (Rose) Bednar, Eric T. Bednar and Michael Bednar, all of Florida.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Bednar; a son, Joseph M. Bednar Jr.; three brothers, Mike, John and Steve Bednar; and three sisters, Mary, Catharine and Elizabeth.
The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.

Michael J. Birmingham
ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. Michael J. Birmingham went home to our Lord on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009.
He was born Sept. 16, 1959, in Youngstown.
He was a beloved son and is survived by parents, Dolores Craig and James and Mary Birmingham of Youngstown; brothers Daniel, James, Patrick and Raymond; sister Lisa Gallagher; nieces Danielle Birmingham, Nicole Calderaro, Jessica and Kayla; nephews Daniel A. and Raymond Birmingham Jr. and Joseph Calderaro; brother-in-law Vince Raver; and sisters-in-law Pamela and Renee Birmingham.
Mike was an amateur boxer, played football, baseball and was a noted trainer in boxing and loved his Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. Along with his brother, Dan, Mike worked with World Champion Winky Wright for over 20 years and countless other boxers and was a world traveler. Mike loved animals, especially his dog, Buddy, and was loved as a great friend to many.
Mike was a devout Catholic and a Mass will be held in his honor, where he attended, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Seminole at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, followed by a celebration of his life at ALife Tribute Funeral Care, at 1 p.m., 5601 Gulfport Ave. S, Gulfport, FL 33707.
Pansy Z. Comer, 85
NILES - Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel for Pansy Z. Comer, 85, formerly of Austintown, who died Saturday morning at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.
Pansy was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Gobey, Tenn., the daughter of the late Robert and Myrtle (Stevens) McCormick.
She retired a number of years ago from General Electric, Mahoning Glass Division in Niles where she had worked in Quality Assurance. She was a member of Evansville Baptist Church, where she had sung in the choir and belonged to the Mission Group. Pansy enjoyed crocheting and different crafts.
Her husband, Theodore J. Comer, whom she married in May of 1951, died Aug. 22, 1972.
She is survived by her son, Tim (Debbie) Comer of Trafford, Pa.; a sister, June (Jim) Gordon of Niles; a stepgrandson, Marty Miller, and a step great-grandson, Anthony James Miller, both of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Eva Hampton and Velma Myers; and two brothers, Robert Jr. and Dolus McCormick.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Joseph DeKatch, 66
FLINT, MICH. There were funeral services held in Michigan for Joseph DeKatch, 66, formerly of Youngstown, who passed away on June 22, 2009.
Joe will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.
He was born Feb. 27, 1943, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Johnson) DeKatch.
Joe was employed with the Flint, Michigan Police Department for 25 years, and retired in 1991 as a Lieutenant in charge of homicide and sexual assaults in the Detective Department.
He was a 1961 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, where he lettered in several varsity sports, and then was a graduate of The Ohio State University.
Joe survived four years on an artificial heart he received on June 15, 2005, after an illness which made his heart unable to function. At the time he was too sick for a heart transplant, so he and his wife decided to use the artificial heart. He continued to accept his medical condition and do the best he could with optimism, just as he had lived throughout his life.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife, Nancy DeKatch of Flint; four children, Todd (Chris) DeKatch of Akron, Joshua DeKatch and Chad DeKatch, both of Flint and Laurie (Jessy) Busch of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Abigail, Olivia, and Victoria; a brother, John DeKatch; and two sisters, Virginia Deering and Ruth (Ted) Storey.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Randy DeKatch, and a sister, Kathleen Rajner.

Donald B. Gahagan, 77
CANFIELD Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral in Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Donald B. Gahagan, 77, who died Friday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Don was born Aug. 5, 1932, in Punxsutawney, Pa., the son of John and Nellie Burkett Gahagan.
Don had served in the Korean War as a medic from 1953 to 1955. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator as a member of the Operating Engineer Local No. 66 before retiring. He also was a member of Musician Local No. 86, and was a drummer in the Rocky Chirchiglia Band for many years. Don also enjoyed painting and used all mediums of paint to create his artwork.
Mr. Gahagan is survived by three sons, Donald B. (Mary) Gahagan of Napoleon, James D. (Milissa ) Gahagan of Austintown and Jeffrey P. (Cindy) Gahagan of New Middletown; two sisters, Mabel (Bill) Hauger of Cincinnati and Helen Little of Cleveland; a brother, Wesley (Joanne) Gahagan of Boardman; and four grandchildren, Kelly, Melissa, Jonathan and Andrew Gahagan.
His wife, the former Betty States, whom he married Nov. 22, 1952, died April 26, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jamie Gahagan; and a brother, Charles Lee Gahagan.

CANFIELD Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church for Susan Germek, 83, who passed away Wednesday morning at the Regency Hospital of Akron following an extended illness.
Susan was born in Johnstown, Pa., on March 25, 1926, the daughter of John and Anna Gallo.
Susan was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austintown.
She enjoyed local talk radio, politics, reading, cooking, and her beloved cat, Simba.
Her husband, Anthony Germek, whom she married June 27, 1948, passed away Sept. 9, 1977.
She is survived by her son, David Anthony Germek, and her daughter, Suzanne Germek, both of Canfield; two brothers, John Gallo and wife Mary Lou and Joe Gallo; three sisters, Ann Sotak, Mary Stoner and husband Hank and Yolanda Haywood and husband Jack, all of Johnstown, Pa.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Besides her husband and parents, Susan is preceded in death by her sisters Margaret Gallo and Irene Robb; brothers-in-law George Sotak, Bob Robb and Joe Wargo; and sisters-in-law Ann Gallo and Jeanne Wargo.

Edgar E. Hantz, 94
COLUMBIANA Edgar E. Hantz, 94, of 738 Fairfield Ave., passed away at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at the Salem Community Hospital from infirmities of age.
Edgar was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Alliance, the son of the late Luther and Mary (Martz) Hantz.
Mr. Hantz was a graduate of Alliance High School. He was employed as a tool grinder, having worked for Galino Products in Alliance, Enterprise Company in Columbiana, Fairfield Machine Shop in Columbiana and for 24 years for National Rubber Machinery in Columbiana, from where he retired in 1984. Edgar was a faithful member of the Zion Hill Church of the Brethren and enjoyed gardening and his cats.
Edgar was preceded in death on Aug. 6, 1996, by his wife, Kathryn M. (Rohrer) Hantz whom he married on October 26, 1957.
He is survived by his sister, Elinore Hantz of Alliance; his brother, Alvin Hantz of Alliance; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Alpheus and Alice Rohrer of North Lima; three nephews and two nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana with Rev. John Bartholomew officiating. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, and one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sep. 1, 2009, at the Seederly-Mong & Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana.

George Markovich, 77
AUSTINTOWN George Markovich, 77, passed away Friday evening, Aug. 28, 2009, at his home after fighting a courageous battle with lymphoma.
George was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Youngstown, a son of the late Martin Frank and Helen Fromel Markovich, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a Korean War veteran, serving four years in Germany, and worked as a conductor with the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Railroad from 1950 until the mill closed in 1981. He later worked as a maintenance man at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church and School from 1982 to 1993 and subsequently worked as a driver with Youngstown Plant and Flower for the past 10 years.
George was a member of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Youngstown and a former member of St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church in Austintown and its Mens Rosary Group.
He enjoyed fishing, telling jokes, and, most importantly, spending time with his family and friends. George was known as a very dedicated Catholic who truly loved God and his family.
Mr. Markovich leaves his wife, Connie Dannery Markovich, whom he married June 15, 1957; two sons, George Markovich Jr. of OFallon, Ill., and Michael J. (Patty) Markovich of Boardman; a daughter-friend, Becky (Chuck) Nock of Hubbard; six grandchildren, Matthew, Libby, Melissa, Danielle, Amanda, and Elizabeth; a brother, Martin (Marilyn) Markovich of Austintown; a sister, JoAnn (Bob) Dull of Poland; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and many, many, many friends.
George will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Two sisters, Mary DoCampo and Rosemary Markovich, are deceased.

Alex J. Panda, 79
AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the West Austintown United Methodist Church for Alex J. Panda, 79, who went home to be with his Lord Jesus Friday evening at Briarfield Manor Nursing Home in Austintown.
He was born April 17, 1930, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph and Celia M. (Check) Panda, and he resided in this area all of his life.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Austintown for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and Air Force, serving during the Korean War.
He was a volunteer fireman with the Austintown Volunteer Fire Dept. and was an active member of the church, where he served as a trustee and also chairman of the administrative board. He served as a missionary, helping to build churches in Central America. He also worked for Junior Achievement and umpired baseball games for the Austintown Little League.
He was a member of the Austintown Firemans Club and the VFW, and enjoyed fishing, billiards and bocce. He loved dogs, especially his beloved Gypsy, and his greatest joy was spending time with his six grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Martha R. Kaglik, whom he married Dec. 1, 1953.
He also leaves behind three children, Lori (Michael) Chizmar of Austintown, Rebecca (Timothy) Pennell of Austintown and Robert (Lori) Panda of Columbus; six grandchildren, Rachael, Alex, Amanda, Michelle, Jordan and Robert; a sister, Jeanie Check of Austintown; and two stepbrothers, Thomas (Donna) Check of Florida and Bernard (Jeanette) Check of Austintown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Steve Check; and a stepbrother; Jake Check.

SALEM Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Sherry R. Rice, 62, who passed away Friday evening, surrounded by her family.
Sherry was born March 8, 1947, in Coshocton, the daughter of the late Jess Dayton and Jean (Danner) Dayton.
She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Sherry was a member of the Red Hatters and was a girls softball coach. She enjoyed reading, bowling, going on cruises and other vacations with her husband and family and spoiling her grandchildren.
Sherry leaves her husband, Charlie Rice, whom she married July 19, 1964; four daughters, Lori (Bob) Mathey of Leetonia, Kathleen (Alan) Bartlett of North Jackson, Karen (Robb) Rast of Salem and Charlotte (Lonnie) Powell of North Baltimore; as well as eight grandchildren, Mathew Withers, Chelsea, Erin and Nora Mathey, Emily and Shawn Rast and Kiah and Hailey Powell; and her beloved golden retriever, Buddy. Sherry also leaves her mother of Coshocton and three sisters, Sue McCoy, Mary Hamilton and Nicki Walker all of Coshocton.
Besides her father, Sherry was preceded in death by a brother Michael Dayton.

POLAND Jessica Marie Rogenski, 27, died Friday morning, Aug. 28, 2009.
Jessica was born April 26, 1982, in Youngstown, a daughter of Michael and Tammy (Winkleman) Rogenski.
She was a 2001 graduate of Struthers High School and ran track for the Wildcats. She loved spending time with her family, especially her two children, and riding with her dad on his motorcycle.
Jessica was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers.
Besides her parents of Poland, she leaves her two children, Jason and Amyiah; two brothers, Michael (Amanda) Rogenski Jr. of New Middletown and Chad (Jeana Wilson) Rogenski of Poland; one sister, Cammy Rogenski of Poland; her grandmother, Sandra Bennett of Youngstown; and her grandfather, Thomas Rogenski of Poland.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Leah Rogenski and a cousin, Steven Memmer.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

William R. Salensky, 43
OZARK, ALA. William R. Salensky, 43, formerly of Youngstown, died Aug. 27 from a motorcycle accident.
William was born Sept. 18, 1965, in Youngstown and was a 1983 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, were he served as a Helicopter Mechanic on the Apache attack helicopters in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a Gulf War veteran, did a tour of duty in Germany and was a U.S. Army instructor at Fort Rucker, Ala., until he later retired as a staff sergeant. Afterwards, he went to work for U.S./Bell Helicopter in Ozark.
William leaves behind to cherish his precious memory to Rindi and Richard Salensky, daughter and son of Denise Salensky, all of Campbell; son David Andrews of Warren, Mich.; his parents, Richard and Jean Detec; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Angie Salensky of Campbell; his sister and brother-in-law, Kelly and Roger Willis of Austintown; also brothers and sisters Sandra Salensky, Joe Weston, John Palmer, and Donald Salensky, all of Pennsylvania; his grandmother, Justine Rucci of Georgia; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

William was preceded in death by his brother, Eric Salensky, and father, Richard Salensky.

Clotilda Cleo Sidor, 92
NILES Clotilda Cleo Sidor, 92, of 1527 Hiram Ave., died at 6:10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009. at her residence.
She was born Aug. 27, 1917, in Warren, the daughter of Dominic and Rose Guiliano Perone.
She was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and was employed at Packard Electric during World War II. She was also employed at Stanley Works, but for most of her life, was a homemaker.
Cleo was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Niles and enjoyed gardening and yard work.
Cleo, who was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, will be deeply missed by her husband, Thomas Sidor Sr., whom she married Aug. 2, 1944; a son, Thomas P. Sidor and wife Carol, with whom she made her home; a brother, Frank Perone of Florida; four sisters, Marie Urban of Warren, Thelma Zemko and husband Joseph of Florida, Helen Scarpaci and husband Joseph of Warren and Laurena Simunich of Niles; two grandchildren, Jeff Sidor and wife Carrie and Mark Sidor; and five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Mark, Bailey, Cortney and Cole.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Perone, and a sister, Ruth Bodnark.

Mary Alice Kacenga Spencer, 91
YOUNGSTOWN A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Cathedral for Mary Alice Kacenga Spencer, 91, formerly of Wick Oval (Smokey Hollow) who died early Friday morning at Omni Manor Health Center.
Mrs. Spencer was born Jan. 10, 1918, in East Youngstown, now Campbell, the daughter of Joseph and Katherin Sopkovich Kacenga.
She graduated from East High School in 1935 and was employed by Youngstown State University from 1970 until 1980, retiring as a secretary for the Home Economics Department. She was a member of St. Columba Church, a former usher at Powers Auditorium and did volunteer work for senior citizens groups in the Youngstown area.
Her husband, Louis J. Spencer Jr., whom she married Oct. 5, 1940, died May 10, 1973.
She is survived by four sons, Frank (Barbara) Spencer Sr. of Youngstown, Lawrence (Sandy) Spencer Sr. of Ellsworth, John (Susan) Spencer of Youngstown and Mark (Thelma) Spencer of Campbell; a brother, Richard Kacenga of Youngstown; 12 grandchildren, Frank Jr., Michele, Greg, Lorraine, Philip, Larry Jr., John Andrew, Michael, Tim, Chris, Dan and Melanie; three great-grandchildren, William, Lily and Maggie; and a daughter-in-law, Sally Spencer of Rockford, Ill.,
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Louis J. Spencer Jr.; a sister, Kathryn Barto; three brothers, Joseph, Lawrence and Steve Kacenga; and a daughter-in-law, Shirley Spencer.

Larry T. Watson
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Rising Star Baptist Church for Larry T. Watson who entered his eternal rest Aug. 26.
Mr. Watson was born June 30, 1951, in Youngstown, the son of Vivian Watson.
He graduated from East High School in 1971 and was employed for 19 years for Delphi Packard as a HIPS Operator before retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the Rising Star Baptist Church. He loved traveling to Atlantic City and Vegas and was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cavaliers fan.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother of Youngstown; his wife of 36 years whom he loved dearly, the former Carolyn Clark; a daughter, Tia Danielle Watson; two brothers, Ray (Gina) Watson and Vincent (Belinda) Thomas; and a granddaughter, Mia Danielle Cole, whom he affectionately called his little princess, all of Youngstown; an uncle, Amos Watson of Cleveland; an aunt, Clara Axel of Youngstown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Vicky Lynn Speed.
