Mary Ann Eighan

CANFIELD – A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church with Fr. Terry Hazel officiating, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 10 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel for Mary Ann Eighan, who passed away at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Mary Ann was born in North Adams, Mass., to the late Stephen M. and Mary Rose (Oliver) Brezas and was a graduate of Rutgers College.

Mary Ann retired as an executive secretary with General Motors.

Mary Ann was a member of the church, the St. Michael’s Garden Guild, Boardman Bridge Club and the Canfield Women’s Club II and she enjoyed gardening.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Joseph B. Eighan, whom she married June 2, 1956 and together they shared four children, Marianne (Dan) Valentine of Canfield, Dr. Mark (Young) Eighan DDS of Redding, Calif., Dr. Michael (Dr. Diane Duckworth) Eighan MD of Sartell, Minn. and Dr. Ellen Brown MD of Sartell; and 11 grandchildren.

Besides her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by a grandson; three brothers, Bill, George and Major Michael Brezas; and two sisters, Clementine Tovani and Vana Gatti.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.

Mabel A. Katko, 79

HUBBARD – Mabel A. Katko, 79, died Friday evening, Sept. 4, 2009, at Liberty Health Care Center.

She was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Youngstown, a daughter of Ralph and Margaret Bowie Slayton and was a lifelong area resident.

A homemaker, Mabel was a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church, a former Girl Scout leader and she enjoyed traveling.

Her husband, Daniel A. Katko, whom she married June 4, 1949, died Oct. 9, 2007.

She leaves a son, Ricke D. (Sheila) Katko of Martinsville, Ind.; a daughter, Karen (William) Klenke of Modesto, Calif.; a brother Harry Slayton of Youngstown and a sister, Jane Daff of Hubbard

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Barrett Klenke.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Kelley-Robb Funeral Home, Hubbard.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at 4 p.m.

Evaline E. “Beanie” Lehnerd, 68

POLAND – There will be prayers at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Nicholas Mancini at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen of Hungary Church in Youngstown, for Evaline E. “Beanie” Lehnerd, 68, who passed away Friday evening.

Evaline was born Oct. 14, 1940, a daughter of Valentine J. and Marie A. Wilson Lehnerd.

She was a 1958 graduate of South High School and worked as a stock clerk and receiver at the Plakie Toy Company.

Evaline was a member of the church, the daughters of the Eucharist, the Altar Rosary Society, parish family Life, Lector, Eucharistic minister and a CCD teacher. She also belonged to the Red Hat Ladies.

Evaline leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters, Judith (Tom) Nuth of Poland and Ada Jane “Lenny” (Richard) Gulu of Youngstown; a friend, Nancy Hagg and family, with whom she made her home; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fox Funeral Home.

John J. Marotta

INDEPENDENCE – John J. Marotta, beloved husband of Silvia (Pallotta), loving father of Emily, son of the late John and Geneva (Clayton), brother of Jennifer Payseno and Joe, and dear brother-in-law, uncle and nephew.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Fortuna Funeral Home (1/2 mile north of Pleasant Valley Road), where funeral services will begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. Services will be at 10 a.m. at St. Matthias Church in Parma. Interment will follow at Woodvale Cemetery.

Martha V. Wess, 68

HUBBARD – There will be services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 at St. Patrick Catholic Church for Martha V. Wess, 68, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 5, at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Martha was born Sept. 10, 1941, in Youngstown, a daughter of Glenn and Dora Mortimer Kettering, and was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

She was a 1959 graduate of East High School and a member of its Ladies Dinner Club. She worked for many years at Tony’s Sandwich Shop in Hubbard and was a cook at Youngstown Osteopathic Hospital until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of the Unity Baptist Church in Boardman. She was active in Hubbard Football Moms and was known affectionately to many as “Mother Martha.” She also enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by her loving husband, James R. Wess, whom she married Aug. 13, 1960; her sons, James R. Wess Jr. and his wife, Alison of Hubbard and Michael J. Wess and his wife, Gina of Twinsburg; and her daughters, Patricia Fagundes and her husband, Dennis of Hubbard, Laura Wess Paulus and her husband, Benjamin of Cleveland and Kathleen Smith and her husband, Grey of Ravenna.

She took unending joy in her grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, Troy, Tori, Emma, Katie and Gabe.

She also leaves her loving brothers and sisters, Elizabeth Wood of Lucedale, Miss., Robert Kettering, Thomas Kettering and Charles Kettering of Hubbard, Mary Lucas of West Seneca, N.Y., Margaret Reves of Youngstown and George Kettering of Greenville, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

There will be calling hours on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and prayers on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Hubbard Union Cemetery.

Martha battled a serious illness for many years and was sustained by her love of the Lord, the support and comfort of her family and friends, and her church. The Wess family would like to thank the staff of the Cleveland Clinic for all the wonderful care she received.
