Beatrice Parthenia Bowman, 54

YOUNGSTOWN – On Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, Beatrice Parthenia Bowman, 54, of 110 E. Wood St., departed this life.

Beatrice was born May 28, 1955, in Winston Salem, N.C.

She was a 1973 graduate of Youngstown East High School and earned her STNA license from Harding Business College. She was a member of the Phillips Chapel Church of God in Christ.

She leaves to mourn three daughters, Mrs. Alesha L. Rivers, Ms. Tanisha N. Bowman and Ms. Akesha J. Bowman, all of Youngstown; five grandchildren, Maurice L. Rivers Jr., Markell L. Rivers, Aderus G. Bowman, Braquan M. Walker and J’waun M. Walker; three sisters, Mrs. Fresha Stanford of Columbus, Ms. Claudette Brown of Youngstown and Ms. Daphne Morrell of Atlanta; five brothers, Mr. Claude Bowman of Youngstown, Samuel Bowman and Keith Bowman of Winston Salem, Elder Carmon S. Bowman of Warren and Staff Sergeant Brian Bowman currently stationed in Egypt; a son-in-law, Maurice L. Rivers; a brother-in-law, Sam Stanford Jr.; sisters-in-law, Linda Bowman, Minnie Bowman and Maria Bowman; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Mae Bowman; her father, Mr. James Barber; her brothers, Mr. Kevin G. Bowman and Mr. Frederick B. Bowman; her sister, Ms. Sureda M. Curry; and her grandson, Braylen T. Walker.

Friends may call Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Phillips Chapel C.O.G.I.C., where funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.

Charles “Chuck” Thornton Carl, 95

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Charles “Chuck” Thornton Carl, 95, passed away Sept. 7, 2009 at Moses Cone Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Boardman United Methodist Church.

Chuck Carl was born Sept. 29, 1913 in Youngstown.

He was a member of the Boardman United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. He graduated from The Rayen School and worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube as an industrial engineer. Chuck was also a member of the Sulgrave Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Carl is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret Fear Carl of Greensboro; daughter, Lynn Carl Bennett and husband Jim of Greensboro; son, William R. Carl and wife Karen of Sheboygan, Wis.; grandchildren, Jonathan Bennett and wife Jeanette, Jennifer Kimbrough and husband Edwin, Sarah Carl and Sylvia Carl; four great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

Gus Crosswhite, 86

BOARDMAN – Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Davis Funeral Home for Gus Crosswhite, 86, who passed away Friday evening at his home.

Mr. Crosswhite was born March 17, 1923 in Abingdon, Va., a son of William Sam and Mary McVeigh Crosswhite.

He graduated from Youngstown College and was a Corporate Tax Examiner with The State of Ohio.

He was a Disabled American Veteran with the U.S. Army.

His wife, the former Eleanor May Stegman, whom he married Feb. 14, 1952, died Dec. 4, 1982.

Surviving him is a daughter, Patricia M. Miles of Boardman; two sons, David W. Crosswhite of Archbold and Charles R. (Carol L. Crosswhite) Crosswhite of Austintown; a sister, Mary Quinn of Bristol, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, C.J. Crosswhite, Matthew Miles and Craig Crosswhite.

Friends may call one hour prior (10 to 11 a.m.) to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.


Alfred L. Davis III, 61

LOS ANGELES – Alfred L. Davis III, 61, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 at West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Fred was born May 8, 1948, a son of the late Alfred L. Davis Jr. and Elaine Y. (Cramer) Grapes.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles L. Grapes.

After graduating from Poland Seminary High School in 1966, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

He has made his home in Los Angeles since 1980 and worked in construction until retiring on disability in 1995.

His hobbies included free hand drawing, going to car shows, reading and rooting for The Ohio State Buckeyes, New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.

His greatest attribute was his devoted involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous since 1995, as a member, speaker and sponsor. Also, his reputation of speaking directly and honestly is one trait that many people and close friends will remember him for.

Fred is survived by his older brother, Randolph L. (Linda) Davis of Columbiana.

A local memorial service will be held at a later date.


Melissa A. “Missy” Dulin, 39

YOUNGSTOWN – Melissa A. “Missy” Dulin, 39, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2009, at her home.

Missy was born Nov. 2, 1969 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Joseph and Kathleen Louise Kearney Newman, and came to this area in 1980.

She was a 1989 graduate of Wilson High School, worked for Youngstown Security Patrol, held various other jobs and was a member of the Good Hope Lutheran Church.

Missy leaves her husband, John C. Dulin, whom she married March 26, 2003; two sons, Anthony Kearney and Franklyn Dulin; her father, Joseph Newman; a sister, Diana Lynn Newman; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive in Boardman, 330-782-8109, where funeral services will take place at 7 p.m.

Helen Marie Gora, 88

VIENNA – Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St. in Boardman and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown for Helen Marie Gora, 88, formerly of Youngstown, who died Monday at Hospice House following a brief illness.

One of seven children, Helen was born Dec. 27, 1920 in Campbell, a daughter of George and Julia Undullich Vodhanel.

Helen was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked at the McKenzie Muffler Company and in the billing department of the Strouss Department Store.

She married Merle Gora Sr. on Sept. 12, 1953 at St. James Church in Campbell. Merle died on Jan. 4, 2000.

Although she was currently a member of St. Vincent DePaul parish in Vienna, Helen’s funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Dominic Church, where she had been a parishioner for more than 40 years. Helen was also a member of the First Catholic Ladies Slovak Association Branch 501. She enjoyed playing bingo and going on bus trips to casinos.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Merle Gora Jr.; her sister, Elaine; and her three brothers, Baron, George and Michael Vodhanel.

She is survived by her son, Joseph Gora of Boardman; her daughter, Susan (Richard) Lyons, with whom she made her home; her granddaughter, Christina Gora, whom she helped raise; and her sisters, Betty Kozar of Youngstown and Mary Sloan of Boardman.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Interment will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Coitsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Helen’s memory either to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland OH 44514 or to the Oblate Sisters at Villa Maria Teresa, 50 Warner Road, Hubbard OH 44425.

Eleanore S. Gross, 83

AUSTINTOWN – There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday at Girard City Cemetery for Eleanore S. Gross, 83, who passed away Sept. 5, 2009. She was recovering from a broken hip.

She was born Nov. 8, 1925 in Girard, a daughter of the late John and Anna (Hill) Kleimo.

Eleanore graduated from Girard High School in 1944. She worked in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Labor before working for Girard City Schools for 21 years.

She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austintown.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Gross, whom she married Dec. 6, 1953; a daughter, Diane Gross; and a son, James Gross, both of Austintown.

Besides her parents, Eleanore was preceded in death by a son, Robert Gross; six brothers, Wayne, Walter, Fabian, Vernon, Herbert and Carl; and her beloved sister, Martha Nelson.

Lucille M. Guerino, 94

FARRELL, PA. – Lucille M. Guerino, 94, of 349 Patt Drive, passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 4, 2009, at her home with her family by her side, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Guerino was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Farrell, a daughter of the late Ralph and Mary D’Lea Palmer.

She was educated in Michigan and moved back to the Shenango Valley following her graduation from high school.

A homemaker, she was a long-time member of the Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church in Farrell.

Mrs. Guerino enjoyed tending her flower gardens and yard.

Her family was the most important aspect of her life and she loved spending time with and caring for each one of them.

Her husband, Eugene Patsy Guerino, whom she married Nov. 11, 1939, passed away March 15, 1993.

Surviving her are two sons, James S. Guerino and his wife, Lorraine and Eugene P. “Buddy” Guerino Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, all of Farrell; a daughter, Patricia Hoffman and her husband, David of Hermitage, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, Dina Lynn Robinson, whom cared for and who lived with her grandmother, Patricia Watts of Pittsburgh, Tracy Frye of Liberty Township, Trumbull County, Donny Hoffman of Alabama, Kristi Mentzer of Sharpsville, Allyson Knott of Wrightstown, N.J., Katie Thompson of Pittsburgh, Gianna, Jason, Justin, Jordan and Jon-Michael Guerino, all of Farrell and Julia Guerino Scaries of Pittsburgh; 18 great-grandchildren, Tay Anthony Robinson and Trey Eugene Robinson, Cody and Cassidy Frye, Jessica Watts, Alex Martz, Rowan Mentzer, Reagan and Avery Thompson, Jamison Guerino, Mason, Abigail and Chelsea Knott, Kaylee Sides and Harley, Brooke, Avery and Merryn Hoffman. She also leaves behind a brother and sister-in-law, Gus and Tiki Guerino of Farrell and her best friends of more than 50 years, Sophie and Nick Kucik of Farrell

Besides her parents and husband, Lucille was preceded in death by five sisters; three brothers; a daughter, Jeanie Guerino Whitacre; and a grandson, David Lee Hoffman.

Calling hours will be at 10 a.m. to the time of service on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 1090 E. State St. in Sharon, Pa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor of the Our Lady of Fatima Church, officiating.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 1965 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Burial will take place at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Hermitage.

Garnell M. “Dolly” Haskins, 73

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at the Price Memorial AME Zion Church for Mrs. Garnell M. “Dolly” Haskins, 73, who departed this life on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Garnell was born on Aug. 30, 1936 in Reidsville, N.C., a daughter of James and Margaret Carter Jackson, and was reared by her grandparents, Eddie and Eugenia Carter Carson.

She was employed as a Cafeteria Manager with the Youngstown City School System for 33 years.

She was a member of the Price Memorial AME Zion Church, a member of the choir, Director of Youth, Missionary Society, a conference worker, class leader, and church cook.

She is survived by her husband, Samuel Elmo Haskins Sr., whom she married Jan. 28, 1952; her children, Corlis J. (Nathan) Green, with whom she made her home, Darlean Laster of Youngstown, Elaine Bevly of Youngstown, Samuel E. (Sabrina) Haskins Jr. of Columbus and Mark Steven Haskins of Youngstown; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepson, Otis Dancey.

Viewing will be held today from noon to 4 p.m. at the F.D. Mason Memorial Funeral Home.

Calling hours will be Thursday one hour prior to the services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Patricia Faye Hutchcraft, 61

TOLEDO – Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Patricia Faye Hutchcraft, 61, who passed away Monday afternoon at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Patricia was born April 5, 1948 in Monroe, Mich., the daughter of Ernest R. and Eva Mae (Smith) Moore.

Before moving to Toledo, Patricia worked at Sav A Step Food Mart.

Patricia leaves her husband, Willie Noah Hutchcraft of Austintown; two daughters, Lalisha Lynch of Toledo and Kristen Jennings of New York State; a son, Robert (Jackie) Lynch of Michigan; a sister, Wanda (Ahmad ”Mike”) Abou-Osman of Canfield; a brother, Robert Allen (Cindy) Moore of Orange Park, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Patricia was preceded in death by her mother, Eva Mae Moore on March 18, 2009 and her father, Ernest Moore on Aug. 31, 2009.

The family will be receiving friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Ernest R. Moore, 85

CANFIELD – Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Ernest R. Moore, 85, who passed away Aug. 31, 2009 at his home.

Ernest was born Dec. 21, 1923 in Speedwell, Tenn., the son of James and Cora (McCarty) Moore.

Ernest worked for U.S. Silica in Rockwood, Mich., and was purchaser of the company and owned Moore’s Restaurant in Monroe, Mich. Before retiring, Ernest was co-owner of Sav A Step Food Mart for 10 years. He was a member of yhr Highway Tabernacle.

His wife, the former Eva Mae Smith, whom he married Nov. 1, 1946, passed away March 18, 2009.

Ernest leaves a daughter, Wanda (Mike) Ahmad Abou-Osman of Canfield; a son, Robert Allen (Cindy) Moore of Orange Park, Fla.; two sisters, Anna Mae Standifer of Monroe and Shirley Meadors of Carlton, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his daughter, Patricia Faye Hutchcraft on Sept. 7, 2009.

The family will be receiving friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Johanna R. Schilling, 87

STRUTHERS – Johanna R. Schilling, 87, formerly of Manor Avenue, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2009, at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers, where she was a resident for six years.

Johanna was born July 3, 1922 in Lowellville, a daughter of Michael and Anna (Kossick) Churan.

Johanna graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 1940. She was a former member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers and its Altar and Rosary Society, and a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop 101.

She enjoyed baking, especially homemade fruit pies, working in the vegetable garden, and fishing along with her husband. Together they belonged to the Thunderbird Archery Club. She enjoyed traveling throughout the eastern United States and volunteering at area nursing homes to help make cancer pads for terminally ill patients. Johanna was devoted to her family and shared her appreciation of nature with them, especially through her love of the many birds who visited their backyard feeders.

Her husband, William H. Schilling, whom she married in 1941, died Oct. 23, 2007.

She leaves three children, Billie (Ronald) Sicafuse of Poland, Patricia (Daniel) Canter of Hartford and William Richard Schilling of Poland; a son-in-law, Ronald DeSalvo of Boardman; five grandchildren, Mark Sicafuse of Poland, Sharon Sicafuse of Chester, Conn., Christine (Scott) DeSalvo Miller of Cleveland, Michele Canter of Nashville, Tenn. and Darrell Canter of Vienna; and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Dillon, and Gabriel Canter.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra DeSalvo; and five siblings, Michael and Mary Churan, Anna Rester, Dorothy Wilkos and Helen Susany.

A correction to the tribute that ran in yesterday’s paper, the funeral Mass is to be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Columba Cathedral. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville.

Family and friends will be received today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 8:45 a.m. until the time of the prayer service at 9:15 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.

Peter A. Stoner, 44

YOUNGSTOWN – Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. John Keehner at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Fox Funeral Home in Boardman for Peter A. Stoner, 44, who passed away Saturday.

Peter was born Jan. 25, 1965 in Youngstown, a son of Anthony P. and JoAnne Laney Stoner.

He was a 1983 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and was of the Catholic faith.

Peter enjoyed camping and fishing and had a appreciation for nature. He loved helping people.

Peter leaves to cherish his memory a brother, Christopher M. and his fiancee’, Linette Heap of Boardman; a sister, Lisa A. (Donald) LaTessa of Youngstown; and a niece, Kristin N. LaTessa of Youngstown.

George G. Talaganis, 86

POLAND – Services will be held at noon on Thursday at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Consantine for George G. Talaganis, 86, who passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009.

Born in New Castle, Pa. in 1922, he was the son of the late Mary and Gust Talaganis.

George was self employed for many years, being the owner of the Public Market in downtown Youngstown. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II in Europe.

George is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Cataland) of Poland, whom he married on July 4, 1949; his son, Atty. Dean Talaganis and his wife, Shelli of Mentor; six grandchildren, George and Angela Talaganis of Lowellville and Zachary, Kaleigh, Michael and Marissa Talaganis of Mentor; and daughter-in-law, Pamela Talaganis of Lowellville.

He is also survived by five sisters, Elizabeth Platas, Janet Calve, Christine Karidis and Martha Pappas, all of New Castle, Pa. and Katherine Honey of Tucson, Ariz., along with many nephews and nieces and their children.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary and his son, Mark.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home at 4700 Market St. in Boardman.

He will lie in state from 11 a.m. until noon on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at St. John’s Orthodox Church on Glenwood Avenue in Boardman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to St. John’s Orthodox Church, 4955 Glenwood Ave., Boardman, OH 44512, where George was a member with his family.

Seth Adam Tumbri, 35

CANFIELD – Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Seth Adam Tumbri, 35, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009.

Seth was born Aug. 18, 1974 in Youngstown, the son of John W. Tumbri and Mitzi (Schinker) Tumbri.

He was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School class of 1992 and worked for Lear Seating.

He was a Catholic by faith.

Seth’s hobbies included landscaping, cars, his Ford Mustang and being outdoors. He was an avid Steelers and NASCAR fan.

Seth leaves his son, Johnathan Tumbri of Poland; his father, John W. and stepmother, Regina of Ellsworth; his mother, Mitzi Dalesio and stepfather, Peter of Canfield; and two sisters, Lacey Maass and her husband, Jim of Canfield and Amber Dombrowski and her husband, Mike of Austintown. He also leaves two stepsisters, Heather Wells of Louisville and Leanne Kromer of Boardman; six nieces and nephews, Camille, Savannah, Jimmy, Cameron, Adam and Paige; as well as his grandfather, John A. Tumbri and his grandmother, Helen L. Tumbri, both of Youngstown.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
