Dale Patrice (James) Adams, 54
COLUMBUS Dale Patrice (James) Adams, 54, born Aug. 21, 1955, in Youngstown, entered eternal rest on Sept. 16, 2009, after a long illness, at her residence in the presence of God and family.
Dale confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized by the Reverend William A. Clark at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Youngstown.
A graduate of East High School in Youngstown, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Kent State University, and a Master of Science degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan State University. Dale retired as an educator from the Columbus Public School System. In addition to her professional career, Dale enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, Sunday school, working with the drama club and travel. She was initiated into her beloved Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1975 and was a member of the local chapter, Alpha Sigma Omega. Dale also was a faithful and passionate member of the Shiloh Baptist Church.
She married Leon Adams on July 21, 1979. This union was blessed with three children, Aisha, Halim and Alicia.
Dale was preceded in death by her father, Curtis A. James Sr.
In addition to her husband and children, she is mourned by her mother, Ms. Katie James of Youngstown; sister, Mrs. Veeda (Eugene, Jr.) Wise of Columbus; a brother, Dr. Curtis A. James, Jr. (Sandra) of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Ms. Andrea Hall of Youngstown; a host of nieces, nephews, friends; and beloved care giver, Ms. Alima Williams, whom Dale considered a daughter.
Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Shiloh Baptist Church, 720 Mt. Vernon Ave. in Columbus, where the family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until the start of service. (AKA Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.)
Interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Ruth W. Courtney, 88
SALEM Ruth W. Courtney, 88, formerly of Girard passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Pleasant View North in Salem. Before that, she had been residing at Gracewoods Senior Living, also in Salem.
Ruth was born Jan. 11, 1921, to the late Herman and Verle Petrie Monsler in Austinburg, Ohio, and moved to Girard as a young child.
She graduated from Girard High School in 1938 and from Youngstown Business College in 1939. She was a lifelong member of the Girard First United Methodist Church.
Ruth worked in the office for Isalys and McDonald Steel before retiring from 35 years of employment at Ohio Bell, where she sang in the Ohio Bell Choir and was a member of the Pioneer Club.
She enjoyed many outdoor concerts with her husband and sister and also attending her great-nephews sporting events.
She is survived by her brother, Robert Monsler of Canfield, and his daughter, Zoe Monsler of Orlando, Fla. She is also survived her niece, Cheryl and husband Robert of Salem; great-nephews Charlie and wife Sarah of Greenville, S.C., Robbie and wife Holly of Upper Arlington, and Allen of Cincinnati; her nephew, Ray Speedy Akins and wife Joanne of Richmond Hill, Ga., and his stepchildren, Vanessa, Kenny and Stacy; many cousins in Jefferson, Ohio; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Courtney, whom she married in March of 1977 and who died in October of 1989; and her sister, Marie Akins.
Services will be Tuesday at noon at The Girard City Cemetery Chapel, where visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4300 Belmont Ave. Unit 3, Youngstown, OH 44505-1084.

David Duncan, 54
CANTON David Duncan, 54, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center.
David was born Jan. 7, 1955, to the late Bruce A. and Lola Stauffer Duncan in Youngstown.
He worked for the WW Fike Co. Carnival Circuit. He enjoyed having a stand at the local flea market.
He is survived by his sister, Linda (Alan) Cracraft of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, James (Linda) Duncan of Sunman, Ind.; a stepsister, Cindy (Bill) Saculla of Jacksonville; a stepbrother, Gary (Becky) Gibson of Vienna; and several nieces.
The family would to thank the nurses and doctors at Mercy Medical Center for their care.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. at Girard City Cemetery.

Kay Edwin Garland
CANFIELD - Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Kay E. Garland, 76, who died late Friday evening at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Kay was born March 24, 1933, in Evansville, the son of the late Paul and Bessie (Johns) Garland.
He had been a self-employed truck driver, retiring in 1987. Kay had served in the U.S. Army in the 1st Army Division and was a member of Local Teamsters No. 377. He enjoyed building and refinishing furniture, restoring old tractors and working in the yard. He loved being a grandfather and spending time with his grandchildren.
Kay is survived by his wife, his high school sweetheart, Janet Heitman, whom he married June 15, 1957. He also leaves three children, Robert (Jeannette) Garland of Youngstown, Bruce Garland and fiancée June of Austintown and Amy (James Sr.) Mamonis of Berlin Center; a twin brother, Ray (Dorothy) Garland of Mineral Ridge; and six grandchildren, Todd, Jessica and Hillary Garland and James, Joseph and Linley Mamonis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Naomi Wilson; and a brother, Ronald Garland.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday.

YOUNGSTOWN George S. Guy, 61, passed away Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Hospice House in Poland.
He was born April 12, 1948, in Youngstown, the son of Eugene Guy and the late Gertrude (Sferra) Guy. He was the husband of Michelle (Creighton) Guy, whom he married Nov. 6, 1987.
His family includes his wife, Michelle Guy of Youngstown; his father, Eugene Guy of Youngstown; son, Jonathan Guy of Youngstown, daughter, Tera Guy of Youngstown, son, George Guy Jr. of Florida; sister, Sandy Armes of Youngstown, sister, Diane Guy of Youngstown, sister, Jane Kelly of Youngstown; three grandchildren; three nephews; four nieces; three great-nephews; and five great nieces.
He was preceded in death by his mother; an infant brother, Bobby Guy; and grandparents, Steve and Ann Sferra and George and Elizabeth Guy.
He was a member of St. Christines Church. He was a mechanic, specializing in Auto Body.

Jerry A. Lawman, 78
BRADENTON, FLA A celebration of life service for Jerry A. Lawman, 78, formerly of Youngstown, will be at St. Columba Cathedral, 144 W. Wood St. in Youngstown, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Jerry passed away at the age of 78, on Aug. 6 in Bradenton, where he and his wife had relocated nine years ago.
Jerry was born and raised on the East side of Youngstown, and as an all-around athlete, was known for his outstanding sports achievements. His quick wit and loving heart endeared him to his family and many friends.
A memorial luncheon will be held immediately following the service at St. Columba Hall.
Rev. Lucille McCrae, 85
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Fellowship Tabernacle Christian Center, 2139 Market St., for Rev. Lucille McCrae, 85, who made her transition from this life to eternal life on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009.
Rev. McCrae was born April 24, 1924, in New York City, N.Y., a daughter of Richard and Romenia Hamilton Bacot.
She was a graduate of the New York Public School System. She was the pastor of the Full Gospel Soul Saving Station in Youngstown, where she ministered in Jail Ministry, Sunday school and Street Ministry.
Her husband, Samuel, whom she married July 1, 1961, passed away in 1988.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a dear friend and caregiver, Janet Martin of Youngstown; the Bishop of her jurisdiction, whom she respected and loved dearly, Bishop Robert I. Winley of New York; and a host of family and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Bacot and Ercella M. Simmons; and four brothers, Carl, Henry, George and Wilbur Bacot.

AUSTINTOWN Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Dorothy V. Morrison, 93, formerly of Austintown, who passed away Thursday morning at Greenbriar Care Center in Boardman.
Dorothy was born March 6, 1916, in Lander, Pa., the daughter of Karl and Lulu (Ethridge) Rowley.
She was a homemaker, a member of the Austintown Community Church and its Mary & Martha Circle Quilters Group. She was also a founding member of the Eagles Auxiliary.
Her husband, Edward Morrison whom she married June 23, 1941, passed away Sept. 5, 2005.
Dorothy leaves one son, Donald (Pam) Morrison of Youngstown; one sister, Marjorie Dexter of Youngsville, Pa.; two grandchildren, Michelle (Darris) Binion and Chris Morrison, both of Austintown; as well as four great-grandchildren, Hunter, Jordan, and Payton Binion and Ian Morrison.

Mary Elizabeth Muempfer, 92
YOUNGSTOWN Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the McCauley Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Church for Mary Elizabeth Muempfer, 92, formerly of Halleck Street, who passed Thursday evening at Park Vista Retirement Community.
Mrs. Muempfer, who was known as Mayme, was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Niles, a daughter of Henry J. and Cora Trimbur Donegan, and was a lifelong member of the community.
Mrs. Muempfer was a 1938 graduate of the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and a graduate of Mineral Ridge High School. She was a private duty nurse and was also employed by St. Elizabeth Health Center. She was a member of the church, a former member of St. Rose Church, a member of American Nurses Association, Ohio Nurses Association District 3, St. Elizabeth School of Nursing Alumni Association, Catholic Council of Nurses, St. Rose Senior Citizens and Girard Senior Citizens.
Her husband, John A., whom she married Sept. 7, 1940, passed away on April 8, 2007.
Mrs. Muempfer leaves to cherish her memory sons, John Michael (Noreen) of Pinehurst, N.C., and William Edward (Marguerite) of Suttons Bay, Mich.; daughters Barbara (Ronald) Hagan of Columbus and Marianne (Ronald) Ameen of Hubbard; 10 grandchildren, Mary Anderson, Michael, Kevin, Matthew and Catherine Muempfer, Colleen Campbell, Kelly Hagan, Jeffrey and Jason and Jonathan Ameen; and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Harry, Paul and Bernard Donegan; and a sister, Estella Donegan.

Gus E. Olson Jr., 62
PEORIA, ARIZ. Gus E. Olson Jr., 62, passed away Sept. 14, 2009, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born on Sept. 23, 1946, in Poland, Ohio, a son of Gus and Amalia (Slabe) Olson.
Gus graduated from Poland High School in 1964, and served four years as a Fireman for the U.S. Air Force. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT II in Berlin Center for 12 years. Gus retired from Commercial Intertech in 2001 and moved to Peoria to be reunited with his wife, Mrs. Linda Olson. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 29 years, Linda Olson, whom he married June 4, 1980. He also leaves behind a brother, Chauncey (Martha) Olson of North Carolina; a sister, Frances (Olson) Newhouse of Youngstown; four nieces; four nephews; five great-nieces; and eight great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, in Peoria.

Marilyn was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of Dr. Joseph and Dorothea Miller Lyden.
She was a 1943 graduate of Ursuline High School and had attended Youngstown College, and worked for Heller-Murray before she got married. Marilyn was a charter member of the church and was a member of Seton Circle, and enjoyed playing bridge.
Her husband Robert Ress Sr., whom she married Oct. 15, 1949, passed away Jan 24, 2007.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Robert (Judith) Ress of Carmel, Ind., and James (Kelley) Ress of Boardman; two daughters, Marilyn (Joseph) Pollifrone of Stuart, Fla., and Laura Ress of Chicago; one sister, Dorothy Hargate of Canfield; one brother, Joseph Lyden of Boardman; and 12 grandchildren, Jennifer (Evan) Thomas, Robert and Diana Ress, Christine, Matthew, Mark and Caroline Pollifrone, David, Michael, Nicholas, Katie and Maggie Ress.

Jerry A. Rockhold Sr., 58
VERO BEACH, FLA. Jerry A. Rockhold Sr., 58, formerly of Poland, passed away early Monday evening, Sept. 7, 2009, at his home in Florida.
Jerry, who was known to many as Rocky, was born Oct. 28, 1950, in Salem, a son of the late Kenneth and Margaret Dillon Rockhold.
He was a 1968 graduate of Salem High School, and lived in Poland before moving to Vero Beach six years ago.
Rocky was a car salesman for 20 years, and worked locally for Klaben Crown Ford in Warren.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Florida. He enjoyed boating, fishing, cooking, and drag racing, and built his own dragsters that he raced at various dragstrips.
Mr. Rockhold leaves his son, Jerry A. Jr. (Christin A.) Rockhold of Boardman; his daughter, Robin S. (Kevin) Jones of Columbus; three stepchildren, Dominic (Vicki) Muto of Struthers, Alycia (Vito) Patierno of Raleigh, N.C., and Sam Muto of Struthers; 10 grandchildren, Morgan, Colton, Dominic, Oliver, Vito, Katie, Marco, Finn, Brock and Cianna; a brother, Kenneth (Vicki) Rockhold of Guilford Lake; a sister, Carol (Buster) Fore of Salem; and his companion, Linda Wawrin.
Rocky will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Belyusar Rockhold, and a sister, Evelyn Teagarden.

Nick Huck Sabula, 86
YOUNGSTOWN Nick Huck Sabula, 86, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at the Hospice House with his family and friends by his side.
Nick was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Elm Grove, Pa., the son of George and Anna (Vrable) Sabula.
He was married to the former Christine Elioff of Youngstown on May 4, 1947.
Nick was a 1941 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. Nick was a Port Gunner with Squadron 104 in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in World War II. His squadron was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations, and he received the Navys Distinguished Flying Cross and one Gold Star in lieu of a second Distinguished Flying Cross. Nick was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart.
He was employed as a meat cutter with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company for 31 years, and Value King for five years, and retired in 1984.
Nick was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church in Campbell for over 80 years, and the GCU Lodge No. 360.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Christine, and their two children, Nick and Bonnie (Barb) Sabula of Katy, Texas, and Jim and Judy (Kurtz) Sabula of Poland; his grandchildren, Wendy and Tommy Papadakis of Austin, Texas, Nicky Sabula of Houston, Jamie and Brett Herand of Chicago and Jennifer Sabula of Poland; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Colby Papadakis of Austin.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Michael Sabula; and five sisters, Marie Pauley, Helen Horvath, Ann Sable, Esther Lesoganich and Kathryn Virus.
Honoring Nicks wishes, his body was donated for the advancement of medical science at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. When research and educational studies have been completed, he will be cremated and the ashes returned.
The family requests that any donations be made on Nicks behalf be presented to the Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
A memorial Mass will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Michaels Byzantine Catholic Church on Robinson Road in Campbell, and will immediately be followed with a memorial luncheon at the church hall.

YOUNGSTOWN Vera Mae Shifflette, 83, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Omni Manor Health Care Center.
Mrs. Shifflette was born May 13, 1926, in Mendota, Ill., a daughter of Edward and Laura Hoelzer Pohl.
She was a graduate of Mendota High School and received her bachelors degree in criminal justice from Rollins College in Orlando, Fla. Mrs. Shifflette worked as an astrologer.
She leaves her four sons, Carl (Donna) Shifflette of Arlington, Texas, Warren (Linda) Shifflette of Vancouver, Wash., John (Robbin) Shifflette of Melbourne, Fla., and Wesley (Leigh) Shifflette of Casa Grande, Ariz.; her daughter, Jacki (Mike) Allen of Georgetown, Texas; sister Shirley (Mark) Baccus of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law Theodora Pohl of Compton, Ill., 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eugene Pohl.
There will be no calling hours or services. According to her wishes, her ashes will be scattered.

Miriam Slayton, 67
POLAND Miriam Slayton, 67, of Youngstown-Poland Road, passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at the Hospice House, with her daughter, Helen, at her side.
Mrs. Slayton was born June 28, 1942, in Charleston, S.C., a daughter of Lawrence and Helen (Waring) Swinton.
Besides being a homemaker, Mrs. Slayton worked as a ward clerk at the USC Medical Center, in Los Angeles for 10 years. She enjoyed watching her daughter as a cheer leader, where she was the cheer mom, and enjoyed watching her son play football. She loved listening to Gospel, R&B and hip music, and cooking, where she was known for her gumbo, catfish, and southern fried chicken. She was always active in her childrens lives, and always supported them in their various extracurricular activities. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew her.
Her husband, Charles E. Slayton Sr., whom she married Jan. 31, 1963, died June 16, 1993.
She is survived by one son, Larry J. Slayton of Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Helen K. (Jason) Davis of Poland; numerous grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Charles E. Slayton Jr.

Mr. Stanford, lovingly known as Keithie, was born Aug. 24, 1970, in Youngstown, a son of Arthur Williams and Nancy Stanford.
He was a 1989 graduate of Wilson High School and attended Akron State University. He enjoyed music and video games.

GIRARD Constance S. Connie Suba, 62, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.
She was born Feb. 22, 1947, in Fairmont, W.Va., the daughter of Richard and Margaret (Klich) Broll.
Connie enjoyed shopping, cooking and collecting Webkinz. Her family and their happiness were very important to her; but more than anything, she enjoyed her grandchildren. She was a member of St Rose church in Girard.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley J. Suba, whom she married Jan. 27, 1968; her mother, Margaret, of Rivesville, W.Va.; a son, Derek J. (Melissa) Suba of Fowler Township; a daughter, Melissa (Joe) Lileas of Lordstown; a brother, David Broll of Fairview, W.Va.; a sister, Tina Naternicola of Fairmont, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Izabella and Zachary.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard.
Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard.
