David L. Avery Jr., 61
AUSTINTOWN A funeral service will take place on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for David L. Avery Jr., 61, who passed away Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at 12:15 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, after unexpectedly falling ill at home on Saturday.
Dave was born May 19, 1948 in Youngstown and was a 1967 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
Dave was currently a maintenance supervisor for Holtec EASP LLC in Campbell.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Dave served in the Vietnam War in Bien Hoa, Vietnam with the rank of SP4 and was honorably discharged on Jan. 21, 1971.
Dave was a proud fan of the New England Patriots and he loved to cook and make people laugh. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Dave will be sadly missed by his wife of 37 years, the former Linda R. Thomae, whom he married July 22, 1972; his children, John D. Avery of Youngstown, Pamela J. Torres and her husband, Mike of Atlanta, Priscilla L. Commarata and her husband, Brian of Boardman and Jennifer E. Avery of Austintown; his brothers and sisters, Janice (Charles) Rogers of Texas, Janet Altheide of Liberty, Patricia (Russell) Miller of Girard, Carol (Jim) Stowe of Heuvelton, N.Y., Ernie (Sophie) Avery of Girard and George Avery of Berlin Center; four grandchildren, Lauren and Aiden Commarata and Mason and Seth Torres; his father-in-law, John Thomae of Austintown; his mother-in-law, Rose (Zautner) Thomae of Austintown; his beloved dog, Sasha; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Darlene Bell, 38
CANTON Funeral services will be held Friday at noon at the Everlife Worship Center for Darlene Bell, 38, formerly of Youngstown, who departed this life on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 at Campus Health Care Center.
Ms. Bell was born March 29, 1971 in Youngstown, a daughter of Earl Williams and Sadie Mae Bell.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Canton.
She leaves her children, Lamar, Pierre and Laneer McKinney, Donniqua Jones and Marshella Hodge, all of Youngstown; her companion, Mark Hodge of Canton; four sisters, Earlene Williams and Dinah and Charlotte Bell, all of Youngstown, and Sweetie Williams of Springfield; two brothers, Charles and Tony Bell, both of Youngstown; and 12 grandchildren.
Her parents; a brother, John Bell; a sister, Debbie Williams; and a niece, Lexus Williams, preceded her in death.
Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday at the F.D. Mason Funeral Home.

John A. Bezyak, 62
POLAND Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, for John A. Bezyak, 62, who died Monday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center surrounded by his family.
John was born Jan. 22, 1947 in Youngstown to Mike and Helen (Hlubick) Bezyak.
John was a member of the Holy Family Church. He was a graduate of Boardman High School, and attended Youngstown State University.
He was trained as a draftsman and worked at Panelmatic. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Bezyak.
John is survived by his father, Mike of Poland; two sisters, Rose Marie Turnbull and Helen L. Ferrare; and a brother, Michael (Donna) Bezyak of Canfield.
The family will be receiving friends Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at St. Johns Cemetery.

William E. Cookson
JAMUL, CALIF. William E. Cookson born Dec. 29, 1933, passed away Sept. 20, 2009.
William was born in Youngston.
He graduated from Ursaline High in 1952 and then joined the Navy and became a Senior Chief.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Cookson; sons, Philip Cookson, Robert Dezonia, and Ray Denzonia; daughter, Lisa Allsopp; and three grandchildren.
William will be laid to rest with military honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
John R. Davis, 74
CAMPBELL Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. John Orthodox Church for John R. Davis, 74, who passed away Sunday morning at Pembrook Nursing Home.
John was born June 21, 1935 in New Castle, Pa., the son on Earl V. and Gertrude Hamilton Davis.
He was a 1955 graduate of New Castle High School and attended Youngstown State University. John served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean War.
He was a sales representative for the HJ Heinz Food Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1995, and was the vocalist for the Carmen Mico Band for 23 years.
He was a member of the church, the VFW in New Castle and Youngstown and the Musicians Local.
John leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Martha, whom he married on July 14, 1962; a son, John E. (Lisa) Davis of Canton; grandchildren, Aleena, Aleksandr, Nikolai and Stefan; sisters, Frances Davis of New Wilmington and Marge Higgins of Poland; two nieces, Kathy Conway of Poland and Danette Large of Boardman; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Katherine Wellman.
The Davis family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Parastas and Friday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Norman A. DeGidio Sr., 84
NEW CASTLE, PA. Norman A. DeGidio Sr., 84, of E. Edison Avenue, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at his home.
He was born July 29, 1925 in New Castle, a son of the late Alexander and Domenica (Palumbo) DeGidio.
He was married to Alda M. (Ticcone) DeGidio, whom died April 19, 2008. Mr. DeGidio was co-owner and operator of Hennon & DeGidio General Contractors for 30 years. He also worked at Rockwell International as a machine operator for 10 years. He was the Assistant Director of Public Works for the City of New Castle for four years and was Treasurer and a Charter Member of Roscoe Credit Union, now 1st Family Credit Union. Mr. DeGidio was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in World War II. He was the Sgt. of the Guard on the USS Yorktown and part of her original crew. He fought in all the battles the Yorktown engaged in including the Battle of the Midway. Mr. DeGidio will be most remembered as the Republican Party Chairman of Lawrence County over the past 20 plus years and for his involvement in local and state government.
He is survived by two sons, Alexander J. DeGidio of New Castle and Norman A. DeGidio Jr. of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Elizabeth Sylvester of New Castle and Clara DeLuria of Alpharetta, Ga.; and grandchildren. He is also survived by his cousins in Tortoreto, Lido, Italy, Cesare and Linda Palumbi, and a number of other cousins in Italy.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur DeGidio and one sister, Antoinette Denny.
Visitation will be held at the William F. & Roger M. DeCarbo Funeral Home, 926 Cunningham Ave. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
Blessing services will be held Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at the William F. DeCarbo Memorial Chapel. Father John Petrarulo of St. Vitus Church will be officiating.
The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform Military Funeral Rites at the funeral home.

Andrew C. Drew Gruver Jr., 62
BOARDMAN Andrew C. Drew Gruver Jr., 62, died on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009.
He was born to Andrew C. and Jane Mason Gruver on May 23, 1947 in Youngstown, where he made his home.
After high school, he attended Youngstown State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in sociology with minors in philosophy, history and the humanities.
He worked at Infocision, Forest Lawn Cemetery and J.C. Penney Co. He spent many hours as a volunteer at the former Woodside Receiving Hospital, at YSU, and at several other community service organizations.
He loved the outdoors, nature and gardening. He was an avid reader and he took great joy in decorating his home with beautiful objects.
He was a dedicated family person and was the primary and sole caregiver for his parents until their deaths. His dog, Vinnie, his loyal and faithful companion, also preceded him in death.
He leaves an aunt, Jane Mason and an uncle, Kenneth Mason, both of Girard; his cousins, Ken Mason and Dennis (Mary Lee) Mason of Youngstown and Randall (Cindy) Ma son and William (Dianna) Mason of Girard; and a number of second and third cousins.
The family wishes to thank his many friends and neighbors who offered kindness, help, support and friendship.
There will be no services.

David Henry Hammond, 62
YOUNGSTOWN Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at noon at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home for Mr. David Henry Hammond, 62, who departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009.
Mr. Hammond was born March 7, 1947 in Trussville, Ala., a son of Joseph and Estella Lake Hammond.
He was a 1968 graduate of South High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1969 until 1972, and then the U.S. Army Reserves until 1975. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed by Youngstown Sheet and Tube and later Dacas Home Health Care. He enjoyed music and being with family, especially his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his daughter, Bridgett Hammond of Baltimore; four grandchildren, Eric, Keondre, Emani and Khalil; his siblings, Joseph Hammond Jr., Joanne Hammond, Winifred (Anthony) Woodland, Jeffrey Hammond, Barry Hammond, and Sherry King, all of Youngstown, and Beverly (Paul) Shinn of Connecticut; as well as a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Cynthia Sims and Gregory Hammond.

Joseph G. Kanik, 85
MESA, ARIZ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and prayers offered at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Joseph G. Kanik, 85, of Austintown and Mesa, Ariz., who died Sunday morning at his daughters residence surrounded by his family.
Joe was born May 29, 1924 in Youngstown to the late Frank J. and Anna (Sefcik) Kanik.
Joe was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1949 graduate of Youngstown College earning his BBA. He was a veteran serving in the U. S. Navy Air Force during Word War II. He retired in 1986 following 37 years of employment with the American Tobacco Company as a district sales manager.
He was a faithful member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where he served as an usher for many years and former member of the church council. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, and was a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was in his words an avid golfer, and played in numerous leagues throughout the area.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Florence M. Bresko, whom he married July 3, 1950, and she died Feb. 2, 1992; and two brothers, Stephen and Andrew Kanik.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan (Dave) Davis of Apache Junction, Ariz., Joan Aeppli of Mesa and Jane Kanik of Mesa; three sisters, Ann Tokarsky and Helen Zalka of Youngstown and Jean Zeilinski of Austintown; a brother, Frank (Audrey) Kanik of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; three grandchildren, Allison (Carl) Bandura of Phoenix, Britney Davis of Gilbert, Ariz. and Joseph Aeppli of Mesa; and one great-grandchild, Lucy Ryan Bandura.
As a son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Joe always put family first. His loving example will continue to shine through those left behind.

Doris F. Lancy, 73
POLAND Doris F. Lancy, 73, died Sunday afternoon at her residence.
Doris was born April 4, 1936 in Bessemer, Pa., a daughter of Andrew and Jennie Slapnichar Tonya. She was raised in Bessemer and moved to this area in 1958.
She was a 1954 graduate of Bessemer High School and received her Bachelors degree and Masters degree in Education from Youngstown State University.
Doris taught both seventh and eigth grade at Struthers City Schools for over 30 years, retiring in 1996. She then continued to work for Struthers City Schools with the St. Nicholas Title Program for 13 years. During her years at Struthers City Schools, she was involved with the Struthers High School Girls Basketball teams for over 30 years and was the announcer for the Struthers Track Team.
Doris was a member of St. Marys Byzantine Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Marys Rosary Society, the Golden Pillars and St. Marys Assumption Center Cookie Committee. She was a member of the GCU Lodge 164, OEA, NEA, Mahoning County Retired Teachers Assoc., and Kappa Delta Phi.
Doris enjoyed bocce and played for the Mount Carmel Womens Bocce League, Judge Lanzo Team, and for St. Anthonys Bocce League. She was a member of the Bessemer Croatian Club and the Bessemer All Class Reunion Committee.
Doris enjoyed traveling and was a tour guide for Classic Heritage Tours annual New York City Trip.
Besides her husband, Edward D. Lancy Sr., whom she married Oct. 4, 1958, she leaves her son, Dr. Edward D. (Gidget) Lancy Jr. of Struthers; daughters, Sherri (Tom) Jarvie of Chagrin Falls and Janet (Ken) George of Struthers; sisters, Frances Juran of Sun Lakes, Ariz. and Amelia (Frank) Deniakis of Florida; brothers, Joseph (Ann) Tonya of New Middletown, Michael (Margaret) Tonya of Cummings, Ga. and Paul (Joanne) Tonya of Beaver Falls; six grandchildren, Sabrina and Ryan Lancy, Shane and Brooke Jarvie, and Kory and Kyle George; and numerous nieces and nephews, who were very dear to her.
Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Edward Juran.
Services will be held Friday at 9:45 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Marys Byzantine Catholic Church with Fr. Richard Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Parastas will be conducted at 3:15 p.m. with the Rosary following.

YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Lane Funeral Home, Niles Chapel for Adell C. McCrae, 89, who died Monday morning at Omni Manor Health Care Center in Youngstown.
He was born April 16, 1920 in Macon, Ga., a son of Alexander and Willie Bell (Johnson) McCrae, and he came to this area as a child.
He was a 1938 graduate of The Rayen School. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He worked as a welder for General Fireproofing for 30 years before retiring. He was also a Mahoning County Deputy Sheriff for 20 years.
He was a member of St. Columba Cathedral. He was also a member of the Masons, and he enjoyed fishing and swimming.
He married the former Ruby J. Williams July 31, 1955, and she preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2008.
He is survived by two children, Rick McCrae of Youngstown and Alicia Grant of Campbell. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Brittney and Kamorin Grant; a sister, Loudell Kelly of Cleveland; and a sister-in-law, Willa Mae Ramsey of Youngstown.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cindy McCrae; five brothers; and four sisters.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with services immediately following.
Burial will take place at Belmont Park Cemetery.

HENDERSON, NEV. Memorial services were held Sept. 14 in Henderson, Nev. for Irma (Sabo) Mislevy, 92, a native of Youngstown. Irma died Aug. 30, at Delmar Gardens Nursing Center in Henderson, Nev.
She was born Jan. 3, 1917 in Youngstown, a daughter of Louis and Barbara (Bosnyak) Sabo.
Irma moved to California in 1946 and moved to Nevada in 1989.
She retired from Pacific Telephone Company.
Her husband, John J. Mislevy, whom she married in 1941, passed away in 2006.
She is survived by four brothers, Robert of Canton, Arnold (Stefeny) of Austintown, James (Pat) of Canfield and Thomas (Maryann) of Columbiana; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Cristmas of Canfield and Anna Marie Sabo of Youngstown; a special nephew, Kenneth (Ingrid) Sperry of California; special friend, Christine Joachim of Henderson and Christines two dogs, Sweet Pea and Pugsley; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews; also the Mislevy family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Olga Sperry; and four brothers, Louis, Paul, Gilbert and William Sabo; and two sisters-in-law, Helen Sabo and Lillian Bowdich.

Virginia Ginny Louise Natale, 89
WARREN There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at noon on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at the Blessed Sacrament Parish, with the Rev Donald E. King officiating for Virginia Ginny Louise Natale, 89, who died at 4:18 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Forum Health with her family by her side.
She was born Aug. 7, 1920 in Franklin, Pa., the daughter of Francis B. and Theresa (Woods) Gregory.
At the age of 18, she was crowned Miss Oil City and shortly thereafter, moved to Warren with her family where she was employed by The Warner Company.
She enjoyed golfing and was a member of the old Avalon Chip-n-Putt and Candywood Womans Golf League. She also had been very active with Lincoln School PTA.
For all who knew Ginny, she will be remembered for her kind, caring, and thoughtful nature. Baking, especially her famous chocolate chip cookies, Christmas fudge and pizzelles for others always brought her pleasure. But most of all, she cherished her time spent with her family and all their holiday traditions.
Ginny married her husband, Victor Natale on May 15, 1948. Together they had four children, Thomas V. (Becke DDS) Natale, Nancee (Frank) Tempesta, Carol (Jeff) Kurdilla and Susan (Greg) Kokal, all of Warren; 13 grandchildren, Matthew, Lauren, Jennifer and John Natale, Tricia (Greg) Valent, Frankie (Athena) Tempesta, Machelle and Brian Tempesta, Jamie and Elizabeth Kurdilla and Michael, Anthony and Gregory Kokal; and four great-grandchildren, Gregory, Patrick and Thomas Valent and Gia Tempesta.
She is survived by her three daughters and a brother, Francis B. Buddy (Audrey) Gregory of Girard.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor in 1973; a son, Thomas in 1992; and her sister, Mary Jane (Ken) Musgrove.

Frank James Perry Jr., 56

Mr. Perry, lovingly known as Pappy, was born Sept. 1, 1953 in Youngstown, a son of Frank J. and Albertha Williams Perry.
He was a 1972 graduate of Hubbard High School and a U.S. Army veteran. He had been employed with the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. He enjoyed music, social cards, and loved to read. He was an avid Cleveland Browns football fan.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Albertha Perry Brown of Youngstown; his wife of 33 years, the former Marie Floyd; four children, Charlie, Cicely and Julia Floyd, and Jamese Perry, all of Youngstown; four sisters, Veronica (Joseph) Robinson and Cathy A., Teresa and Tangia Perry, all of Youngstown; six brothers, Lynn, Paul, Rommie and Chester, all of Youngstown, Alfonso of Chillicothe and Roosevelt of Mansfield; his grandmother, Rose L. McCall of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Damon West Jr., Cierra Howard and TraVaysha Green; and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Chester and Annie Perry.

Isabel I. Stokan, 76
GIRARD A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Isabel I. Stokan, 76, who passed away Monday evening at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Isabel was born Jan. 29, 1933 in Cherry Valley, the daughter of Gaspar and Isidora (Vela) Francisco.
Isabel was owner/operator of Johny Lawn Equipment Repair Service Center in Girard, retiring in 1997. Her greatest love was for her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her husband, John E. Stokan, whom she married Jan. 10, 1953, passed away Oct. 16, 1980.
Isabel leaves three daughters, Nancy (Ron) Fetters of North Canton, Susan (David) Core of Brookfield and Joyce Fricker (her companion, Dean Mazza) of Girard; her former son-in-law, Harry Fricker; two brothers, Raymond (Jean) Francisco of Liberty Township and Demi Francisco of Struthers; and three grandchildren, Joel and Cassandra Fricker and Allison Fetters.
Isabel was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
